1. Field output correction factors using a fully characterized plastic scintillation detector

Abstract

As small radiation fields play an ever-increasing role in radiation therapy, accurate dosimetry of these fields becomes critical to ensure high quality dose calculation and treatment optimization. The PRB-0002, a new plastic scintillation detector (PSD) part of the Hyperscint RP-200 dosimetric platform from Medscint, can potentially facilitate small field measurements. In this work our objective is twofold: first we perform a detailed characterization of the field output correction factors of the PRB-0002 over a wide range of field sizes; second we demonstrate how this PSD can be used to determine the field output correction factors for other small field detectors. Uncertainties were carefully considered and a detailed uncertainty budget is provided. EGSnrc Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to determine the impact of detector composition, surrounding materials, dose averaging within the sensitive volume as well as ionization quenching. From these simulations, the field output correction factors of this PSD were determined. Then, by experimental comparisons, field output correction factors for 2 solid state detectors and 3 small volume ion chambers were. With PRB-0002, the material composition was found to be balanced with the ionization quenching making the field output correction factor near unity. For fields between 0.6 $\times$ 0.6 and 30 $\times$ 30~cm$^2$, the field output correction factors of the PRB-0002 were between 1.002 and 0.999 with a total uncertainty of 0.5 %. Analysis of the uncertainty budget showed that an overall uncertainty of 0.59% can be achieved for a 1 $\times$ 1~cm$^2$ using PRB-0002. We conclude that PRB-0002 is a near-ideal detector for small field dosimetry. Furthermore, it can be used to experimentally determine the field output correction factors of other dosimeters with great accuracy.

Abstract

[EN] The genus Leonseius Chant & McMurtry (Phytoseiidae: Typhlodrominae) was proposed to accommodate Typhloseiopsis regularis De Leon, 1965, a species with a troubled taxonomic history that was previously classified in the genera Typhlodromus Scheuten, Diadromus Athias-Henriot and Chanteius Wainstein. Due to its Amblyseius-like appearance (long s4, Z4 and Z5, most other setae minute; atypical for a typhlodromine), the poor descriptions of reproductive structures (spermatheca, spermatodactyl), and probably also because at the time it was a monotypic genus, researchers over the years have based the species-level identification of Leonseius regularis mainly on dorsal and ventral idiosomal chaetotaxy and setal length. In a survey of phytoseiid mites conducted in cacao plantations (Theobroma cacao L.: Malvaceae) of the municipality of Ilheus, Bahia, northeastern Brazil, we identified two distinct morphotypes among specimens initially identified as L. regularis. Herein we provide new morphological data for L. regularis to complement the original description and previous redescriptions, and then describe Leonseius elbanhawyi Carvalho, Ferragut & Oliveira sp. nov., from cacao, distinguishing it from L. regularis by its spermatheca and spermatodactyl. Abstract

Summaries of taxonomic knowledge are provided for all acarine groups in Canada, accompanied by references to relevant publications, changes in classification at the family level since 1979, and notes on biology relevant to estimating their diversity. Nearly 3000 described species from 269 families are recorded in the country, representing a 56% increase from the 1917 species reported by Lindquist et al. (1979). An additional 42 families are known from Canada only from material identified to family- or genus-level. Of the total 311 families known in Canada, 69 are newly recorded since 1979, excluding apparent new records due solely to classification changes. This substantial progress is most evident in Oribatida and Hydrachnidia, for which many regional checklists and family-level revisions have been published. Except for recent taxonomic leaps in a few other groups, particularly of symbiotic mites (Astigmata: feather mites; Mesostigmata: Rhinonyssidae), knowledge remains limited for most other taxa, for which most species records are unpublished and may require verification. Taxonomic revisions are greatly needed for a large majority of families in Canada. Based in part on species recorded in adjacent areas of the USA and on hosts known to be present here, we conservatively estimate that nearly 10,000 species of mites occur in Canada, but the actual number could be 15,000 or more. This means that at least 70% of Canada’s mite fauna is yet unrecorded. Much work also remains to match existing molecular data with species names, as less than 10% of the ~7500 Barcode Index Numbers for Canadian mites in the Barcode of Life Database are associated with named species. Understudied hosts and terrestrial and aquatic habitats require investigation across Canada to uncover new species and to clarify geographic and ecological distributions of known species.

Abstract

A species of laelapid mite, Ololaelapsformidabilis, is redescribed based on male and female adults from soil in Sumatra, Indonesia. This species is distinguished from other Ololaelaps species by its metapodal platelet narrowly fused with the parapodal plate and by its hologastric shield having two inverted-V-like ridges. The genus is redescribed based on a review of the literature and examination of specimens of some species. Valid species of Ololaelaps are listed and accompanied by notes on morphological characters to assist future revision of the genus. Open-Access-Publikationsfonds 2019 peerReviewed

11. Oziella sibirica (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Phytoptidae), a new eriophyoid mite species described using confocal microscopy, COI barcoding and 3D surface reconstruction

Abstract

Oziella sibirica sp. nov., collected from sedges (Cyperaceae: Carex macroura) in Siberia, Russia, is herein described based on the external morphology of all active instars using primarily conventional phase contrast microscopy, and on the female internal genitalia and prodorsal shield design using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) imaging and a 3D modelling technique. A partial mitochondrial COI gene sequence of O. sibirica sp. nov. is also provided, through GenBank, and this represents the first published record of any gene sequence data for the family Phytoptidae. We present remarks on the phylogenetic significance of the position of setae 3a in immature instars of eriophyoids and on the ontogenic variability of the empodium morphology of O. sibirica sp. nov. Using this species as a model, we propose a method for describing the internal genitalia of eriophyoids based on CLSM. We advocate the use of CLSM imaging as a new, relatively simple technique for observing and describing the internal genitalia of eriophyoids, as these largely unexplored genitalic structures may provide phylogenetically meaningful information for improving the classification of this poorly understood group of mites. In addition, CLSM may complement conventional light microscopy techniques in facilitating the interpretation of external structures such as body ornamentation or chaetotaxy.
