Chlorite minerals, mainly in the form of clay coats, play a critical role in determining the reservoir quality of siliciclastic rocks. They can positively influence reservoir quality by preserving porosity during deep burial, but they can also play a negative role by reducing permeability through pore filling. The main aim of this research is to determine the optimal conditions for chlorite growth in sedimentary basins. This study investigates the Lower Cretaceous turbidite sandstone of the Agat Formation in the North Sea. We used a source‐to‐sink approach to investigate the impact of sediment source composition, chemical weathering and depositional environment on chlorite formation. Understanding the interplay between these processes can help refine exploration and exploitation strategies, optimise hydrocarbon recovery, and reduce exploration risks. Representative samples from two hydrocarbon fields (the Duva and Agat fields) were investigated using petrography, geochemistry, heavy mineral identification and quantification, and U–Pb geochronology of detrital zircons. Our results show a strong heterogeneity in the sediment provenance between the two turbidite systems. In the Duva field, the sandstone is derived from a mixture of mafic and felsic sources, producing Fe‐rich sediments. Intense chemical weathering generates fine fraction materials rich in kaolinite, vermiculite, and hydroxy‐interlayered clays, which are transported into shallow marine settings. Subsequent interaction with seawater results in the formation of glauconitic materials, Fe‐illite, and phosphatic concretions. These Fe‐rich materials are remobilised into deep marine settings, providing precursors for the development of authigenic Fe‐clays such as berthierine and chlorite. Conversely, in the Agat field, the sandstone is predominantly sourced from felsic rocks that underwent low chemical weathering, producing sediment rich in quartz and feldspar with a low amount of clays. With few Fe‐rich materials transported into the basin, the development of chlorite in the Agat field was less pervasive. Basin configuration and depositional environment exerted additional control on chlorite distribution. In the confined turbidite system (e.g. Duva field), chlorite is typically found as coating, whereas in less confined turbidite systems (e.g. Agat field) chlorite shows complex distribution related to depositional environment and dewatering processes. Our findings demonstrate the importance of considering the entire sediment routing system, from source to sink, when predicting chlorite occurrence and its impact on reservoir quality in deep marine settings. Organic matter degradation is the engine behind the biogeochemical evolution of sediments during burial. Previous research has shown that eogenesis is the seat of a complex interplay between organic matter, microbes and the most reactive part of inorganic compounds, such as clay minerals. To explore the variability and stability of bromine and clay minerals as geochemical and mineral tracers, we selected an eastern Mediterranean core that has a high degree of stability in the quality and quantity of organic matter through time at a one-million-year scale and great variability in organic matter content at a 10 ky scale. According to the very low maximal burial depth reached by these sediments (the core length is only 36.5 m), physical parameters, such as temperature and pressure, did not significantly influence the evolution of the studied parameters during the burial history. The bulk clay mineralogy of organic-rich and organic-poor sediments is similar all along the investigated core material; smectite predominates over kaolinite. The only identified authigenic minerals are biogenetic framboidal pyrite and manganese oxides. The X-ray data and the chemical compositions of the smectite are characteristic of a montmorillonite which is representative of a detrital Nile source. At a one-million-year scale, the organic matter content has no significant influence on clay eogenesis, and detrital smectite and kaolinite remain unchanged. Bromine is present in marine organic matter as organobromine compounds. During eogenesis, bromine is released from organic matter as bromide ion, resulting in an increase in the bromide concentration in the pore water with depth. Dissolved bromide can be used as a conservative tracer of the debromination of sedimentary organic matter. For the first time, we established that solid-phase BrOrg is a reliable tracer of debromination rates in marine sediments. The rate of debromination depends on the organic matter content. The rate increases from less than 2.3 × 10−4 μmolBrOrg mol.C−1.y−1 to 6.3 × 10−4 μmolBrOrg mol.C−1.y−1 when TOC varies from 0.17 to 3%. This increase is related to the development of the bacterial population and provides the basis for further investigation of other oceanic basins. For TOC values >4%, the rate of debromination decreases. We propose that the bioavailability of organic matter is another factor of variability in the debromination rate.

Fluid circulation in sedimentary basins is responsible for the transformation and cementation of mineral grains during diagenesis. Concretions and pipe chimneys are obvious features resulting from such circulation but some transformations in the matrix of rocks, if less spectacular, may lead to pervasive transformations of the sediments. Inherited slide surfaces in the Eocene Ainsa Basin (Spanish Pyrenees) have been chosen to test this hypothesis. In the Sobrarbe delta, the steady mineralogy of marls indicates homogeneity of the sedimentary source. Enrichment of montmorillonite is only observed close to scar surfaces and in the infilling of the scars. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation reveals that smectites are formed by in situ replacement of detrital mafic minerals resulting by transformation of detrital minerals under the action of cold sedimentary fluids, lower than 75 °C. The indications of low temperature conditions and local fluid circulation both support a meteoric origin of the fluids postdating the burial history, probably during an exhumation of the basin associated with the tectonic uplift. The higher smectite contents in the infilling of scars and along the unconformities of slide surfaces reveals enhanced circulation of fluids in under-consolidated sediments and the effective fluid circulation pathways along inherited slide surfaces.

Visualizing and quantifying the spatial heterogeneity of rock textures (i.e., mineral and porosity distributions) is of great interest in petrology or for understanding petrophysical properties. Spatial heterogeneities are not accurately revealed by usual techniques based on microscopy or bulk physical measurements. Detailed mineral mapping is already available from processing of chemical element maps acquired using an electron probe microanalyzer (Part I). The present paper is devoted to developing a new, coupled method for obtaining porosity maps from the same initial data. According to the difference between measured and theoretical sums of oxide weight percentages, a mean porosity is semi-quantitatively estimated for each pixel of the map (i.e., not fully absolute or accurate). All pores, including nanometer-size ones, are taken into account, whereas a sample area of several square millimeters is analyzed (spatial resolution of a few micrometers). The textural heterogeneities are thus visualized from the complementary maps of solids and voids. By superimposing these two maps, both the mean porosity and a porosity histogram associated with each rock-forming mineral are obtained. Such porosity measurements integrate the pore amounts within mono-crystals larger than the X-ray emission volume or between nanometer-size crystals of a matrix. When porosity changes are associated with a given mineral (various crystal arrangements, dissolution, etc.), pluri-modal distributions appear on porosity histograms. Thresholding each histogram mode then allows these processes to be localized. We used the MX80 bentonite to test this methodology, which represents a useful tool to study the local deformations and alteration of each rock-forming mineral, as well as to model transport properties. Most natural rocks or engineered materials display a multi-scale heterogeneity ranging from the nanometer to the centimeter. Their spatial textural heterogeneity can be approached from chemical element maps acquired using various techniques (SEM, EPMA, SXAM, synchrotron [mu]-XRF, TEM), depending on the chosen magnification. Chemical map processing that yields quantitative petrographic information is improved here according to newly developed mineral thresholding methods that accommodate mixtures and solid solutions. The complex case of an MX80 compacted bentonite is used as a test case. The 14 major chemical elements of this sample were mapped using an electron probe microanalyzer, and chemical map processing yielded a quantitative map of the 18 mineral species of bentonite with a spatial resolution of a few micrometers. The textural heterogeneity of the solid part of the sample is thus visualized and quantified on an area ranging between 0.1-1 [cm.sup.2]. The method also provides a complete modal analysis of the sample. The methodology is expected to have broad applications in Earth and materials sciences.
