The ecotone zone, located between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes, has been under intensive anthropogenic pressures due to the expansion of commodity agriculture and extensive cattle ranching. This has led to habitat loss, reducing biodiversity, depleting biomass, and increasing CO2 emissions. In this study, we employed an artificial neural network, field data, and remote sensing techniques to develop a model for estimating biomass in the remaining native vegetation within an 18,864 km2 ecotone region between the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. We utilized field data from a plant ecology laboratory and vegetation indices from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and trained artificial neural networks to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) in the study area. The optimal network was chosen based on graphical analysis, mean estimation errors, and correlation coefficients. We validated our chosen network using both a Student’s t-test and the aggregated difference. Our results using an artificial neural network, in combination with vegetation indices such as AFRI (Aerosol Free Vegetation Index), EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index), and GNDVI (Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), which show an accurate estimation of aboveground forest biomass (Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 15.92%), can bolster efforts to assess biomass and carbon stocks. Our study results can support the definition of environmental conservation priorities and help set parameters for payment for ecosystem services in environmentally sensitive tropical regions.

Savannas play a key role in estimating emissions. Climate change has impacted the Cerrado savanna carbon balance. We used the burned area product and long-term field inventories on post-fire vegetation regrowth to estimate the impact of the fire on greenhouse gas emissions and net carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the Cerrado savanna between 1985 and 2020. We estimated the immediate emissions from fires, CO2 emissions by plant mortality, and CO2 removal from vegetation regrowth. The burned area was 29,433 km2; savanna fires emitted approximately 2,227,964 Gg of CO2, 85,057 Gg of CO, 3010 Gg of CH4, 5,103 Gg of NOx, and 275 Gg of N2O. We simulated vegetation regrowth according to three fire regime scenarios: extreme (high fire frequency and short fire interval), intermediate (medium fire frequency and medium fire interval), and moderate (low fire frequency and long fire interval). Under the extreme and intermediate scenarios, the vegetation biomass decreased by 2.0 and 0.4% (ton/ha-year), while the biomass increased by 2.1% under a moderate scenario. We converted this biomass into CO2 and showed that the vegetation regrowth removed 63.5% of the total CO2 emitted (2,355,426 Gg), indicating that the Cerrado savanna has been a source of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Abstract Background Many significant ecosystems, including important non-forest woody ecosystems such as the Cerrado (Brazilian savannah), are under threat from climate change, yet our understanding of how increasing temperatures will impact native vegetation remains limited. Temperature manipulation experiments are important tools for investigating such impacts, but are often constrained by access to power supply and limited to low-stature species, juvenile individuals, or heating of target organs, perhaps not fully revealing how entire or mature individuals and ecosystems will react to higher temperatures. Results We present a novel, modified open top chamber design for in situ passive heating of whole individuals up to 2.5 m tall (but easily expandable) in remote field environments with strong solar irradiance. We built multiple whole-tree heating structures (WTHSs) in an area of Cerrado around native woody species Davilla elliptica and Erythroxylum suberosum to test the design and its effects on air temperature and humidity, while also studying the physiological responses of E. suberosum to short-term heating. The WTHSs raised internal air temperature by approximately 2.5 °C above ambient during the daytime. This increased to 3.4 °C between 09:00 and 17:00 local time when thermal impact was greatest, and during which time mean internal temperatures corresponded closely with maximum ambient temperatures. Heating was consistent over time and across WTHSs of variable size and shape, and they had minimal effect on humidity. E. suberosum showed no detectable response of photosynthesis or respiration to short-term experimental heating, but some indication of acclimation to natural temperature changes. Conclusions Our WTHSs produced a consistent and reproducible level of daytime heating in line with mid-range climate predictions for the Cerrado biome by the end of the century. The whole-tree in situ passive heating design is flexible, low-cost, simple to build using commonly available materials, and minimises negative impacts associated with passive chambers. It could be employed to investigate the high temperature responses of many understudied species in a range of complex non-forest environments with sufficient solar irradiance, providing new and important insights into the possible impacts of our changing climate.

The Amazon forest represents one of the world’s largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs. Here, we evaluated the role of soil texture, climate, vegetation, and distance to savanna on the distribution and stocks of soil pyrogenic carbon (PyC) in intact forests with no history of recent fire spanning the southern Amazonia forest-Cerrado Zone of Transition (ZOT). In 19 one hectare forest plots, including three Amazonian Dark Earth (ADE, terra preta) sites with high soil PyC, we measured all trees and lianas with diameter ≥ 10 cm and analyzed soil physicochemical properties, including texture and PyC stocks. We quantified PyC stocks as a proportion of total organic carbon using hydrogen pyrolysis. We used multiple linear regression and variance partitioning to determine which variables best explain soil PyC variation. For all forests combined, soil PyC stocks ranged between 0.9 and 6.8 Mg/ha to 30 cm depth (mean 2.3 ± 1.5 Mg/ha) and PyC, on average, represented 4.3% of the total soil organic carbon (SOC). The most parsimonious model (based on AICc) included soil clay content and above-ground biomass (AGB) as the main predictors, explaining 71% of soil PyC variation. After removal of the ADE plots, PyC stocks ranged between 0.9 and 3.8 Mg/ha (mean 1.9 ± 0.8 Mg/ha–1) and PyC continued to represent ∼4% of the total SOC. The most parsimonious models without ADE included AGB and sand as the best predictors, with sand and PyC having an inverse relationship, and sand explaining 65% of the soil PyC variation. Partial regression analysis did not identify any of the components (climatic, environmental, and edaphic), pure or shared, as important in explaining soil PyC variation with or without ADE plots. We observed a substantial amount of soil PyC, even excluding ADE forests; however, contrary to expectations, soil PyC stocks were not higher nearer to the fire-dependent Cerrado than more humid regions of Amazonia. Our findings that soil texture and AGB explain the distribution and amount of soil PyC in ZOT forests will help to improve model estimates of SOC change with further climatic warming.

Abstract Comparative studies of tree dynamics can be useful for the conservation of forest fragments in the Cerrado. We tested if the successional dynamics in fragments of semideciduous forest (SF) and cerradão (CE) are influenced by edge effects (EE). Two surveys were carried out with plots allocation in both physiognomies, from the edge towards the interior of the fragments. All trees with diameter at breast height ≥ 5cm were measured, identified and classified (ecological groups). Both physiognomies showed high recruitment and mortality rates when compared with other forests in Cerrado. We found an EE on tree density (SF), and on mortality, total basal area and basal area of dead (CE), although do not so notorious on a short-term scale. Probably because EE did not influence the ecological groups and canopy cover. Our results suggest that the forest fragmentation can act as a disturbance agent, causing changes in the tree dynamics of the Cerrado forests.

Campos de murundus work as recharge zones and are important for the maintenance of water resources in Brazilian Cerrado. However, with the expansion of the agricultural frontier, this ecosystem may disappear or suffer high anthropogenic disturbances. The aim of the study was to evaluate the structure and distribution of woody species, after the implantation of artificial drainage channels in campo de murundus, in plots near and distant of the drains in the soil. We sampled woody individuals with ≥ 3 cm diameter at the base, and established 20 permanent plots of 20×50 m, 10 of which were between 0-20 m of the drains (edge) and 10 between 150-200 m distant from the drains (interior), totaling two hectares of survey. We recorded 47 species with total density of 230.5 ind.ha-1 and total basal area of 1.331 m2 ha-1. The diversity index of species was H’ = 3.18. We recorded higher density and basal area in the edge, and differential distribution and occupation of woody species in the microrelief of the murundus. This provides us strong evidence that the drains have altered the vegetation structure, especially in the edge of the remnant campos de murundus turning the vegetation woodier and denser.

Deconstructing functional trait variation and co-variation across a wide range of environmental conditions is necessary to increase the mechanistic understanding of community assembly processes and improve current parameterization of dynamic vegetation models. Here, we present a study that deconstructs leaf trait variation and co-variation into within-species, taxonomic-, and plot-environment components along three tropical environmental gradients in Peru, Brazil, and Ghana. To do so, we measured photosynthetic, chemical, and structural leaf traits using a standardized sampling protocol for more than 1,000 individuals belonging to 367 species. Variation associated with the taxonomic component (species + genus + family) for most traits was relatively consistent across environmental gradients, but within-species variation and plot-environment variation was strongly dependent on the environmental gradient. Trait-trait co-variation was strongly linked to the environmental gradient where traits were measured, although some traits had consistent co-variation components irrespective of gradient. Our results demonstrate that filtering along these tropical gradients is mostly expressed through trait taxonomic variation, but that trait co-variation is strongly dependent on the local environment, and thus global trait co-variation relationships might not always apply at smaller scales and may quickly change under future climate scenarios.

Fire in tropical forests increases tree mortality, degrades forest structure, and reduces carbon stocks. Currently, there are large gaps in understanding how fire affects understory forest structure and composition, interactions with fire recurrence, and long-term impacts. Understanding these changes is critical to evaluate the present and future response of tropical forests to fire. We studied post-fire changes in understory regeneration in forests in Mato Grosso State, southern Amazonia, Brazil, aiming to answer the following questions: (i) does forest structure (basal area) and tree community composition vary with fire frequency and time since the last fire? (ii) does the response differ among strata (e.g., sapling, larger trees)? (iii) are changes in diversity associated with changes in forest structure? We surveyed trees and lianas in previously structurally intact forests that underwent selective logging, followed by different fire histories, including 5 and 16 years after once-burned, 5 years after three times burned, and unburned (control). Overall, species composition (abundance, richness, and number of families) and diversity were highest for the unburned treatment and lowest for the recurrent burned areas. Fire frequency negatively affected plant structure and basal area; basal area of small, medium, and large plants declined significantly by more than 50% in the most frequently burned areas. Richness was positively related to basal area in the three times burned sites and in the 16 years regenerating site for all strata. Our results demonstrate the negative influence of frequent fires on both the composition and structure of small trees in Amazonian forest. These changes to the cohort of small-sized trees may persist and have long-term impacts on forest structure, affecting the capacity, and direction of forest recovery. With wildfire widespread across the region and increasing in frequency, fire may negatively affect tree diversity in remaining selectively logged forests, and affect regional carbon cycling with consequences for the global vegetation carbon sink.

Resumo A necromassa é um importante componente da decomposição e ciclagem de nutrientes nos ecossistemas naturais. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar o estoque e perda de necromassa da comunidade e das espécies em um gradiente fitofisionômico de cerrado típico, cerradão e floresta estacional semidecidual, na transição Amazônia-Cerrado. Calculamos, para cada fitofisionomia, o estoque de necromassa, por meio dos diâmetros dos indivíduos mortos em pé em 2005, 2008, 2011 e 2013. Também calculamos a perda de necromassa da comunidade e das espécies por meio dos diâmetros dos indivíduos que permaneceram mortos em pé entre, pelo menos, dois censos (2002-2005; 2005-2008; 2008-2011 ou 2011-2013). O cerrado típico apresentou estoque e perda de necromassa significativamente inferior ao cerradão e à floresta estacional. Ao nível de espécie, a taxa de decomposição de necromassa não apresentou correlação com a densidade da madeira. Maiores estoque e perda de necromassa na floresta estacional em relação ao cerrado típico podem estar relacionados ao maior porte dos indivíduos, que pode propiciar maior cobertura do dossel e microclima mais favorável à ação de organismos decompositores. Dessa forma, características intrínsecas de cada fitofisionomia podem estar relacionadas diretamente ao estoque e perda de necromassa em formações savânicas e florestais da transição Amazônia-Cerrado.

Previous studies of Pre-Columbian earthworks in the Amazon basin have left a gap in the Upper Tapajós Basin (UTB). Here, the authors detect 104 Pre-Columbian earthworks in the UTB, suggesting continuous occupation across southern Amazonia and higher population densities than previously estimated.

In the middle of a political and fiscal crisis, the Brazilian government is applying successive budget cuts, including in science funding. Recent cuts radically affect research programs on biodiversity that are crucial components for the design and monitoring of public policies for nature conservation and sustainable development. We analyze the consequences of such cuts on the Research Program on Biodiversity (PPBio), the largest biodiversity research network in Brazil (626 researchers, nine networks in all Brazilian biomes). Brazil holds a substantial part of the world's biodiversity and of tropical forests that play a significant role for regional and global climate stability. If underfunding is maintained, the dismantling of the Brazilian PPBio will have consequences that go beyond biodiversity knowledge itself but affect society as a whole. Brazil will likely fail to reach the National Targets for Biodiversity 2011–2020, and it will be difficult to fulfill the restoration target of the Brazilian NDC and to advance with the sustainable development goals.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar um diagnóstico da comunidade do entorno do Parque Municipal do Bacaba, estabelecendo uma relação de proximidade com a população e buscando uma pré-compreensão de sua visão sobre o Parque e a Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso. Foram aplicados questionários em 120 domicílios, representando uma população de 521 pessoas que vivem no entorno do Parque. Foi evidenciada baixa escolaridade, 27% cursaram o ensino fundamental e 39% não responderam. Entre os moradores, somente 42% visitaram o Parque ao menos uma vez. Entretanto, 55% consideram o Parque bem preservado, sendo provável uma consideração restrita à vegetação do entorno do Parque. Os moradores não sabem como contribuir com a preservação, além de não jogar lixo e não desmatar. A maioria (81%) demonstrou afetividade com o Parque e está ciente da importância do Parque para a qualidade de sua vida, mas desconhece a relação do Parque com a preservação e conservação da qualidade e quantidade da água do Córrego Bacaba. De forma geral, os moradores demonstraram envolvimento e pré-disposição positiva para ações de preservação do Parque, que são elementos essenciais para garantir o sucesso de futuras iniciativas ou ações educativas de ampla participação

Resumo O clima e as condições edáficas são importantes preditores dos padrões espaciais e da diversidade alfa de espécies vegetais. A distribuição espacial das populações vegetais fornece informações sobre processos ecológicos que regem as comunidades. Nesse estudo investigamos a riqueza e os padrões espaciais intra e interespecíficos de espécies de samambaias em uma Floresta Estacional Perenifólia na transição Amazônia-Cerrado. Descrevemos os padrões espaciais através da função O’ring univariada e bivariada. Registramos quatro espécies de samambaias (Trichomanes pinnatum, Lindsaea pallida, Adiantum incertum e Campyloneurum phyllitidis). Todas as espécies exibiram o padrão espacial intraespecífico agregado. O padrão interespecífico positivo foi observado entre as espécies T. pinnatum e A. incertum, e L. pallida e A. incertum, porém, não observamos relações espaciais entre T. pinnatum e L. pallida. A forte sazonalidade climática aliada à homogeneidade topográfica pode estar influenciando na baixa riqueza de espécies. A agregação observada para essas espécies é um indicativo de que a limitação de dispersão e a estruturação do habitat estão determinando suas distribuições espaciais. As associações espaciais positivas das espécies podem estar sendo potencializadas pelo estresse ambiental durante o período de seca. A ausência de relações espaciais pode ser um indício de que a neutralidade pode explicar parcialmente a distribuição de samambaias na floresta estudada.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de biochar aplicado com os macronutrientes N e P, para a formação de substratos, no desenvolvimento de mudas de angico (Anadenanthera colubrina) para a restauração florestal. Os experimentos foram realizados em viveiro florestal, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Estudaram-se interações entre concentrações crescentes de biochar e de N, na forma de ureia, e de biochar e P, na forma de superfosfato simples, adicionados a Latossolo Amarelo. Determinaram-se os parâmetros de crescimento, qualidade e nutrição das mudas, e os resultados foram submetidos ao estudo de regressão polinomial (superfície de resposta). A interação entre biochar e N beneficiou a qualidade e a concentração foliar de Mg das mudas de angico, apesar de não influenciar o crescimento das plantas. As mudas de angico submetidas à aplicação de biochar e P mostraram maior qualidade e eficiência de uso dos nutrientes Ca e K. A adição de biochar ao substrato, junto com N e P, apresenta potencial de uso para a produção de mudas de qualidade, o que favorece o sucesso de práticas de restauração florestal em regiões com baixa fertilidade do solo e sujeitas a períodos de estresse hídrico.

The gallery forests are being fragmented, leading to loss of its high diversity, becoming indispensable studies assessing the environmental performance of their tree species. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the production of seedlings Copaifera langsdorffii is influenced by ambient light, higher quality and initial development at intermediate light levels. Plants were tested in full sun, 30%, 50%, 70% and 90% shading in order to evaluate the number of leaves, height and diameter at 60, 90, 120 and 191 days after emergence (DAE) and dry root and shoot biomass and Dickson quality index (DQI) at the end of he experiment (191 DAE). The effect of shading levels was analyzed by means of regression analysis. The plants showed good growth plasticity at different levels of lightness, but with better development and quality (IQD) at 50% shade, corroborating the hypothesis tested. The excessive lightness or shading should be avoided to ensure the production of more vigorous seedlings of Copaifera langsdorffii . Thus, production of seedlings of this species under 50% shade is recommended to promote their quality and possibly ensure better survival in the field.

ABSTRACTFire can change the species composition, diversity, and structure of savanna vegetation, thus altering growth and mortality rates. Such changes in the woody vegetation of burned savanna forest were evaluated over four years in comparison to unburned savanna forest. All woody plants with a diameter at breast height > 10 cm were measured in 100 permanent plots. Six months later, 38 of these plots were burned. Three and a half years later, all surviving individuals were re-sampled. Species richness, diversity, and the number of individuals did not change in the burned plots, although they had significantly higher (p < 0.05) increases in basal area and mortality rates (5.1% year-1) than the unburned plots (3.0% year-1).Tachigali vulgarishad the greatest post-fire increase in basal area (53%). The results indicate that fire alters the dynamics and structure of the savanna forest, excluding the less fire-tolerant species and smaller individuals (? 15cm). Tachigali vulgaris is a key species for the recovery of savanna forest biomass due to its considerable post-fire gains in basal area, at least over the short term due to its short life cycle. It follows that frequent burning of savanna forest would result in a marked change in the species composition and structure of its woody vegetation.

Campos de murundus (grasslands dotted with knolls that are covered with savanna-like woody vegetation) are a common landscape in central Brazil. In this study, we assessed for the first time the dynamics of the vegetation in a floodplain campo de murundus, describing changes in composition and structure of the woody vegetation. In 2005, we established 16 permanent 25 × 25 m plots, where we identified and mapped individuals with a trunk diameter at the base ≥ 2.86 cm, as well as measuring the height of those individuals. In 2008 (after two fire events), we resampled the plots. In 2005, we had registered 4.54 m² ha-1 of basal area, 430 individuals, 42 species, 36 genera and 24 families. In 2008, we found an increase in basal area (to 4.65 m² ha-1) and a decrease in numbers of individuals (to 399), species (to 41), genera (to 35) and families (to 23). Species diversity did not differ between the two surveys. Mortality exceeded recruitment (2.68% year-1 vs. 1.29% year-1). Nevertheless, the community showed a gain in basal area owing to the growth of surviving individuals and, particularly, to the rise in the number of basal sprouts. We argue that the small floristic turnover may be related to the great resilience of the woody vegetation, whereas the structural changes might reflect the effects of the burnings in the area.

This study investigated the possibility of temporal variation in functional characteristics of arboreal species in three Cerrado vegetation physiognomies. We analyzed 195 species in total, including 88 in typical cerrado, 89 in cerradão and 105 in gallery forest, with 87 species common in at least two physiognomies. The study was based on lists provided by floristic and phytosociological surveys conducted over 12 years. We observed temporal variation in functional diversity values for typical cerrado and cerradão, while the gallery forest remained constant. The arboreal communities in all three physiognomies showed temporal variation in species richness and abundance, which is likely attributed to drought and ire events that occurred during the study. The lack of temporal change in functional diversity, species richness, and abundance in the gallery forest suggests higher functional stability during periods of environmental change. The causes of the functional changes observed in the typical cerrado and cerradão remain uncertain, but may be related to greater seasonality of soil water availability compared to the galleryforest, where trees have increased access to soil water throughout the year.

ABSTRACT Riparian and gallery forests located at the “arc of deforestation” have been undergoing fast degradation. With the implementation of the new Brazilian Forest Code (Law 12,651 of 2012), these can be reduced further. Thus, new studies on seedling production for ecological restoration should be carried out using native species from the Amazon and Cerrado. The objective of the present study was to assess under which shading levels the seedlings of Calophyllum brasiliense, a tree species typical of humid environments, show the highest values of growth and nutrient use efficiency, aiming at using these seedlings for restoration. The study was carried out in a plant nursery of the State University of Mato Grosso in Nova Xavantina, Brazil. We assessed seedling growth in diameter, height, number of leaves, production of shoot and root dry mass, Dickson quality index (DQI), and efficiency in the internal use of nutrients (EIUN) in greenhouses at 0 (full sunlight), 30, 50, 70, and 90% shading. The treatments at 50 and 70% shading showed the best results. Ecologically, the species responds well under both gap conditions (50% shading) and canopy or closing gap conditions (70% shading). Our results showed that the ideal conditions to produce seedlings of this species with high EIUN are obtained in greenhouses with 70% shading.

O estudo objetivou investigar possíveis variações temporais das características funcionais de espécies arbóreas de três fisionomias de Cerrado. Foram analisadas 195 espécies, sendo 88 em cerrado típico, 89 em cerradão e 105 em mata de galeria, com 87 espécies comuns em pelo menos duas fisionomias. O estudo se baseou em listas de levantamentos florísticos e fitossociológicos ao longo de 12 anos. Foi registrada variação na diversidade funcional para o cerrado típico e o cerradão ao longo do tempo, enquanto a mata de galeria permaneceu constante. As três comunidades apresentaram variações na riqueza de espécies e número de indivíduos ao longo dos inventários, provavelmente atribuídas a eventos de seca e fogo que ocorreram no período de estudo. Estes resultados revelam grande estabilidade funcional da mata de galeria frente às variações ambientais, florísticas e fitossociológicas ocorridas no período. As causas das mudanças verificadas no cerrado típico e no cerradão são ainda incertas, mas podem estar relacionadas à maior instabilidade hídrica destas comunidades em relação à mata de galeria, onde as árvores têm melhor acesso à água no solo ao longo do ano.

As populações de plantas se distribuem naturalmente nas formas agregada, aleatória ou uniforme. Estes padrões podem variar conforme as condições ambientais e ao longo do tempo. O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliara distribuição espaço-temporal das cinco principais espécies de um cerradão no leste Mato-grossense para verificar se a incidência de fogo e eventos de seca resultam em mudanças e até que ponto tais mudanças são detectáveis nos padrões espaciais destas populações. Os levantamentos foram conduzidos em uma área de cerradão no Parque Municipal do Bacaba, Nova Xavantina-MT, em fevereiro de 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010 e 2012, em 50 parcelas permanentes de 10 x 10 m. Hirtella glandulosa demonstrou resiliência aos distúrbios em relação às demais espécies durante a década de estudo. Tachigali vulgaris e Xylopia aromatica, apesar de apresentarem mudanças na densidade entre os anos, mantiveram o mesmo padrão de distribuição espacial ao longo do tempo. As alterações na estrutura populacional e espacial de Roupala montana e Myrcia splendens podem indicar sensibilidade dessas populações aos distúrbios. Vegetation fragmentation causes edge effect, changing the microclimate, the species composition, and their biotic and abiotic interactions. The litter layer is crucial for nutrient cycling in forests. This study aimed to check the influence of vegetation edge on attributes of the litter layer in a cerradão area, testing the hypothesis that distance from the edge is directly related to biomass and leaf proportion in the litter layer. Samples were collected from the litter layer in 95m transects in 5 cerradão areas of eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil. We estimated a total of 6,724.44 kg/ ha-1 of litter, out of which 72.2% are leaves, 27.8% are branches, 0.07% is fruits, and 0.004% is flowers. Distance from the edge presented a positive and significant relation to thickness, dry weight, volume, and leaf fraction mass of the litter. This information contributes to the understanding of a poorly studied component in cerradão areas, showing that the fragmentation of these areas changes the structure of litter layer, and this may cause losses to ecosystem functions and services, with possible future reflexes on the species diversity.

The present study examined the hypothesis that remnant forests in small protected areas may be resilient to intermediate disturbances. We analyzed the diameter and height distributions of the tree community in a typical cerradão (14°42’02.3”S and 52°21’02.6”W) and determined which species were most abundant, sampling at two- to three-year intervals over eight years. In 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2010, we measured all live trees with a diameter ≥ 5 cm at 0.3 m above ground in 50 plots of 10 x 10 m. Although significant variation was observed in the density of the trees and the distributions of their diameters and heights, the community maintained the “reverse-J” and unimodal patterns for these distributions, respectively. These results indicate continuous recruitment and little change in the structure of the community over the study period, supporting our hypothesis. Three different patterns of diametric distribution were observed among the analyzed species, likely reflecting different forest occupation strategies. Hirtella glandulosa was the speciesmost able to exploit its environment, as it possessed the greatest overall abundance and was represented by individuals in all diameter classes.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi testar a hipótese de que remanescentes de florestas, mesmo em pequenas unidades de conservação e sujeitos a perturbações intermediárias, são resilientes. Para isso, as distribuições de diâmetros e alturas da comunidade e das espécies mais abundantes de um cerradão (14°42’02,3”S e 52°21’02,6”W) foram analisadas e comparadas em intervalos de dois a três anos em um período de oito anos. Em 2002, 2005, 2008 e 2010 foram medidas todas as árvores vivas com diâmetro ≥ 5 cm a 0,3 m do solo em 50 parcelas de 10 x 10 m. Mesmo com variações significativas na densidade, a distribuição de diâmetros e alturas da comunidade manteve o padrão de “J-reverso” e unimodal, respectivamente, indicando recrutamento contínuo e poucas mudanças na estrutura ao longo dos anos inventariados, corroborando a hipótese do presente estudo. Entre as espécies analisadas foram observados três padrões de distribuição diamétricas que provavelmente refletem diferentes estratégias de ocupação da floresta. Hirtella glandulosa foi a espécie mais apta a explorar os recursos do ambiente, apresentando as maiores abundâncias e indivíduos distribuídos em todas as classes de diâmetros.

Objetivou-se com esse trabalho avaliar o efeito do Biochar (fino de carvão) adicionado a substratos na formação de mudas de alface. O experimento foi conduzido no viveiro de mudas da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso, campus de Nova Xavantina – MT. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado com seis tratamentos e quatro repetições. Utilizou-se a cultivar Americana – GreatLakes 659 e seis substratos, sendo dois comerciais (Plantmax® e Germinar®) e quatro formados a partir de um substrato comercial (Germinar®) + Biochar. Foram avaliados a massa fresca e seca da parte aérea, massa fresca e seca das raízes, número de folhas verdadeiras e altura das plantas. Juntamente com Plantmax®, o substrato Germinar® acrescido de 7,5% de Biochar proporcionaram o melhor desempenho produtivo das mudas de alface para as variáveis, altura da planta, número de folhas verdadeiras, massa fresca e massa seca das raízes. O Biochar se mostrou um bom condicionador de substrato quando associado ao substrato comercial Germinar®, proporcionando bom desempenho produtivo das mudas de alface.

The aim of this study was to describe the temporal fluctuations in diameter and height distributions in a semideciduous seasonal forest (14º49’32”S and 52º06’20”W), in the Cerrado-Amazon Forest transition, Nova Xavantina – MT, Brazil, between 2003 and 2008. Sixty permanent plots of 10 x 10m were established, where the diameters and heights of all individuals with diameter at breast height ≥ 5cm were measured. The class intervals for diameter and height distribution were calculated and histograms were constructed. The diameter distributions of the community and the main species did not differ within the period, as well as the community height distribution, characterizing a temporal maintenanceof the distributions. Even with the absence of temporal changes, the community under study is not static, since between 2003 and 2008 it was found a decrease in the number of individuals (6%) and a discrepancy in the “q” quotient values among the successive diameter classes. The diameter distributions of the main species suggest that Cheiloclinium cognatum, Tetragastris altissima and Brosimum rubescens will keep or perhaps increase their population densities, whereas Amaioua guianensis and Chaetocarpus echinocarpus possibly shall have a decrease in their populations in the future.

O estudo foi realizado na floresta de galeria do Córrego Bacaba, no Parque Municipal do Bacaba (14º43'12,2S e 52º21'36,7"W), em Nova Xavantina, MT. A dispersão de sementes foi analisada e comparada entre três porções da floresta (alto, meio e baixo), distantes cerca de 200 m entre si, em um gradiente topográfico. Foram distribuídos, aleatoriamente, 20 coletores circulares de 0,3 m² em cada porção de floresta, sendo as coletas de sementes realizadas quinzenalmente, entre junho de 2007 e maio de 2008. O material foi submetido à secagem em estufa até peso constante e as sementes, separadas em duas categorias, baseando-se na presença de estruturas de voo (V) e na ausência dessas estruturas (NV). O número de morfoespécies e de sementes e a biomassa foram comparados entre as porções de floresta e entre os períodos seco e chuvoso. Coletaram-se 20.965 sementes em 24 quinzenas, sendo 777 do tipo V e 20.188 do tipo NV. Na porção do alto ocorreram 52 morfoespécies de sementes, no meio 55 e no baixo 49. A diversidade de morfoespécies de sementes foi inferior à diversidade de espécies de plantas lenhosas na mesma área. Considerando o padrão sazonal de dispersão de sementes, tanto para as V (número, morfoespécies e biomassa) quanto para as NV (biomassa), recomenda-se um controle no fluxo de visitantes no Parque do Bacaba, especialmente nos meses de pico de dispersão de sementes, no final do período seco e início do chuvoso (setembro-dezembro). Medidas de excursionismo de mínimo impacto poderão trazer benefícios para o estabelecimento de sementes e plântulas e garantir a sustentabilidade da floresta.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar e comparar a riqueza e a composição de espécies de angiospermas entre campos de murundus (CM) do Parque Estadual do Araguaia (PEA), em uma das maiores planícies de inundação do Brasil. O PEA localiza-se em Novo Santo Antônio, Mato Grosso, sendo delimitado a leste pelo Rio Araguaia e a oeste pelo Rio das Mortes. Foram realizadas coletas intensivas da flora em 11 hectares, e áreas adjacentes, de CM distribuídos ao longo do PEA. Estudos do meio físico foram realizados através de descrições in situ. Os solos são do tipo Plintossolo, hidromórficos minerais, profundos, imperfeitamente a mal drenados, com baixa permeabilidade. No total foram coletadas 318 espécies, 193 gêneros e 66 famílias. Nos CM os valores variaram de 51 a 135 espécies, 42 a 107 gêneros e 27 a 52 famílias. Erythroxylum suberosum foi considerada uma espécie típica de CM brasileiros, Curatella americana típica de CM de Mato Grosso e Byrsonima cydoniifolia típica do PEA. O padrão físico e de distribuição espacial dos murundus pode ser um reflexo do pulso de inundação sazonal, visto que a composição florística dos campos de murundus variou entre as áreas de influência dos rios que delimitam o parque. Este foi o maior levantamento florístico já realizado em CM, permitindo relevante ampliação do conhecimento e registro de espécies típicas do Bioma Cerrado e que ocorrem nessa fitofisionomia.This study aimed to compare angiosperm species richness and composition between floodplain 'murundus' (FM) of Araguaia State Park (ASP) in one of Brazil´s largest floodplains. ASP is located in Novo Santo Antônio, Mato Grosso state, and is bordered on the east by the Araguaia River, and on the west by Das Mortes River. Intensive floristic inventories were made on 11 hectares, and adjacent areas, of FM distributed over ASP. Environmental studies were performed by in situ descriptions. The soils are deep, mineral hydromorphic plinthosols, imperfectly to poorly drained, with low permeability. A total of 318 species, 193 genera and 66 families were collected, and FM values ranged from 51 to 135 species, 42 to 107 genera and 27 to 52 families. Erythroxylum suberosum is a typical species of Brazilian FM, Curatella americana typical of Mato Grosso FM and Byrsonima cydoniifolia typical of the ASP. The physical and spatial distribution pattern of the "murundus" (earthmounds) may reflect the seasonal flood pulse, since the floristic composition of the FM varied between the areas under the influence of the rivers that border the park. This was the largest floristic inventory ever undertaken in FM, with a significant increase in our knowledge and recording of typical species of the Cerrado Biome which occur in this phytophysiognomy.

Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar a eficiência de carvão vegetal pirogênico como condicionante de substrato para o desenvolvimento de mudas florestais de alto vigor, testando-se o carvoeiro (Tachigali vulgaris) como espécie representativa do Bioma Cerrado. Foram tomados como modelo de produtividade os solos de elevada capacidade de troca catiônica com Horizonte A antrópico da Amazônia (Terras Pretas de Índio), ricos em carbono pirogênico derivado de carvão vegetal. O experimento foi realizado no viveiro da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso, no município de Nova Xavantina-MT. Foram utilizadas quatro concentrações de carvão de eucalipto (Eucalyptus sp.) com 5; 12,5; 25 e 50% do volume total do substrato base e 0% como testemunha. Foi avaliada a porcentagem de emergência no início do experimento. Durante oito meses, a cada 30 dias, foi contado o número de folhas e medida a altura total das mudas. No oitavo mês foi medido o diâmetro do coleto e determinada à massa seca da raiz e da parte aérea. Os tratamentos e a testemunha apresentaram emergência superior a 80%, não havendo influência do carvão. Entretanto, o carvão vegetal incrementou significativamente a altura das mudas, o número de folhas, o diâmetro do coleto e a massa seca radicular e da parte aérea, o que ficou evidenciado pela forte correlação positiva com as concentrações de carvão. Portanto, o carvão vegetal pirogênico é uma alternativa viável como condicionante de origem biológica do substrato para a produção de mudas potencialmente mais resistentes, requerimento importante para plantios em campo sob condições mais severas, como na recuperação de áreas degradadas no Bioma Cerrado.

Comparou-se a riqueza, a composição florística e a estrutura da vegetação lenhosa entre um hectare de cerrado rupestre (CR) e um de cerrado típico (CT) no leste Mato-grossense. A riqueza registrada (CT = 79 e CR = 71) e estimada pelo método de bootstrap (CT = 86,7 ± 2,3 e CR = 75,8 ± 1,8) foi maior no CT, mas o índice de diversidade foi igual entre as duas fisionomias (3,58 no CT e 3,56 no CR; teste t de Hutcheson = t2;0,05 = 0,43, p > 0,05). Apesar da elevada similaridade florística (Sørensen = 0,75 e Morisita = 0,73), a análise de ordenação (DCA) separou as parcelas do CT e do CR, indicando a seleção de espécies nas duas fisionomias. Foram registradas altas porcentagens de indivíduos mortos no CT (28,1%) e no CR (17,3%), devido à ocorrência de uma queimada quatro meses antes da amostragem da vegetação. A área basal por parcela foi maior no CR, enquanto as densidades por parcela, as alturas e os diâmetros medianos dos indivíduos, não diferiram entre as duas fisionomias, sugerindo que o solo raso e o afloramento rochoso no CR não limitaram o estabelecimento e o desenvolvimento da flora lenhosa.In this work, the vegetation richness, floristic composition and the structure of woody plants of 1 hectare of rocky cerrado ("cerrado rupestre") (CR) and 1 hectare of typical cerrado (CT), in eastern Mato Grosso, were compared. The observed (CT = 79 and CR = 71) and the estimated richness (CT = 86.7 ± 2.3 and CR = 75.8 ± 1.8), using bootstrap analysis, were higher in the CT, but the diversity index was the same for both physiognomies (3.58 in CT and 3.56 in CR; Hutcheson t test = t2;0.05 = 0.43, p > 0.05). Despite high floristic similarity (Sørensen = 0.75 and Morisita = 0.73), the ordination analysis (DCA) separated the CT and CR plots, which indicated species selection in both physiognomies. A percentage of dead individuals in CT (28.1%) and CR (17.3%), due to fires four months before sampling took place, was also found. The CR basal area per plot was higher, and densities per plot, heights and mean diameters of individuals did not differ between both physiognomies, which suggests that the shallow soil and rocky outcrop of CR have not limited the establishment and development of the woody flora.

O entendimento de processos ecológicos, especialmente das modificações estruturais e florísticas em ecossistemas naturais, é fundamental para embasar ações visando à sua conservação e/ou restauração. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar mudanças ocorridas na estrutura da comunidade lenhosa na transição Cerrado-Floresta Amazônica, no período de 2003 a 2008. Foram estabelecidas 60 parcelas permanentes de 10 x 10 m onde foram amostrados todos os indivíduos com diâmetro à altura do peito > 5 cm. Em 2003 foram registrados 1.140 ind. ha-1 e área basal de 24,35 m² ha-1, enquanto em 2008 foram 1.071 ind. ha-1 e área basal de 22,04 m² ha-1. O recrutamento (2,76% ano-1) não compensou a mortalidade (3,95% ano-1) e o ganho em área basal (0,54% ano-1) não superou a perda (3,77% ano-1). Em função dessa diferença, a meia vida (17,3 anos) foi menor que o tempo de duplicação (29,9 anos), resultando em baixa estabilidade (12,6 anos) e reposição (23,6 anos) em relação a outras florestas estacionais. Os parâmetros de dinâmica da comunidade e das principais espécies sugerem que a floresta está passando por mudanças caracterizadas principalmente pela retração da densidade e biomassa dos indivíduos arbóreos, que podem estar relacionadas ao aumento das lianas, a uma fase de início de reconstrução do ciclo silvigenético da floresta ou ainda à forte seca que ocorreu na região no ano de 2005.Understanding ecological processes, especially the structural and floristic changes in natural ecosystems, is essential before conserving and/or restoring these areas. The aim of this study was to assess the changes that occurred in the woody plant community from 2003 to 2008. Sixty permanent plots of 10 x 10 m were established, in which all individuals with diameter at breast height > 5 cm were sampled. A total of 1,140 ind. ha-1 were recorded in 2003 (basal area 24.35 m² ha-1) and 1,071 ind. ha-1 in 2008 (basal area of 22.04 m² ha-1). The recruitment (2.76% year-1) did not compensate mortality (3.95% year-1) and the basal area gain (0.54% year-1) did not exceed the loss (3.77% year-1). Because of this unbalance, the half-life (17.3 years) was lower than the doubling time (29.9 years), resulting in low stability (12.6 yrs) and replacement (23.6 yrs) in relation to other seasonal forests. The parameters of community and species dynamics suggest that the forest is undergoing changes characterized mainly by the density and biomass reduction of trees, which may be related to an increase in lianas, an early rebuilding phase of the forest silvigenetic cycle or even the severe drought that occurred in the region in 2005.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever as flutuações temporais nas distribuições de diâmetros e alturas de uma Floresta Estacional Semidecídua (14º49'32" S e 52º06'20" W), na transição Cerrado-Floresta Amazônica, Nova Xavantina-MT, entre os anos de 2003 e 2008. Foram estabelecidas 60 parcelas permanentes de 10 x 10 m onde foram medidos os diâmetros e as alturas de todos os indivíduos com diâmetro a altura do peito ≥ 5 cm. Os intervalos de classe para as distribuições de diâmetro e altura foram calculados e elaborados histogramas. As distribuições de diâmetro da comunidade e das principais espécies não diferiram no período, bem como a distribuição de alturas da comunidade, caracterizando uma situação de manutenção temporal das distribuições. Apesar da ausência de alterações temporais, a comunidade estudada não é estática, pois entre 2003 e 2008 constatou-se redução do número de indivíduos (6%) e uma discrepância dos valores do quociente “q” entre as sucessivas classes diamétricas. As distribuições diamétricas das principais espécies sugerem que Cheiloclinium cognatum, Tetragastris altissima e Brosimum rubescens manterão ou eventualmente aumentarão suas densidades populacionais, enquanto Amaioua guianensis e Chaetocarpus echinocarpus possivelmente terão suas populações reduzidas no futuro.

As impucas são fragmentos florestais que sofrem inundação sazonal e se localizam em área de transição entre os biomas Cerrado e Floresta Amazônica. Este estudo objetivou avaliar e comparar a estrutura da vegetação de duas impucas com diferentes estados de conservação no Parque Estadual do Araguaia (PEA), em Mato Grosso, uma não degradada (ND) (12º19'11,2"S e 50º44'15,6"W) e outra degradada (DE) (12º09'04,2"S e 50º49'37"W). Foram demarcados cinco transectos subdivididos em 50 parcelas permanentes de 10x20m. Todos os indivíduos lenhosos com diâmetro à altura do peito > 5 cm foram amostrados. A impuca ND apresentou 28 famílias, 42 gêneros e 45 espécies, e a DE apresentou 22, 31 e 33, respectivamente. Na impuca ND, a densidade total foi de 2.177 ind.ha-1, a área basal de 35,23 m².ha-1, e a diversidade de espécies de Shannon-Wiener de 2,87 nats.ind-1, e na DE foi 1.501 ind.ha-1, 25,16 m².ha-1 e 2,64 nats.ind-1, respectivamente. As espécies que mais se destacaram foram Licania apetala, Calophyllum brasiliense, Ochthocosmus multiflorus, Mabea paniculata, Tachigali froesii e Xylopia sp. A impuca DE apresentou menores riqueza, diversidade de espécies, densidade e dominância relativas do que a impuca ND, provavelmente devido ao histórico de perturbações e à inundação anual. A similaridade florística (Sørensen) entre ambas foi alta. Contudo, ao compará-las com impucas de Tocantins e outras florestas brasileiras, a similaridade foi baixa, sugerindo que as impucas de Mato Grosso e Tocantins apresentam identidade florística própria. Este estudo contribui para o conhecimento dos ecótonos brasileiros, para a elaboração do plano de manejo do PEA e para iniciativas de recuperação de impucas degradadas.

Este estudo, realizado na Mata de Galeria do córrego Bacaba (14º41'S e 52º20'W), em Nova Xavantina, MT, avaliou as mudanças na estrutura da vegetação no período de 1999 a 2006. Em 1999, foram demarcadas 141 parcelas permanentes em três porções da mata (alto, meio e baixo), em um gradiente topográfico, e medidos os indivíduos com CAP ≥ 15 cm. No inventário de 2006, os indivíduos foram remedidos e os recrutas, computados. Em 2006, amostraram-se 135 espécies, 113 gêneros e 49 famílias. A posição hierárquica das espécies apresentou mudanças expressivas em relação a 1999. Na porção do alto, as espécies com maior valor de importância (VI) foram: Astrocaryum vulgare, Diospyros guianensis e Calophyllum brasiliense. Essa porção pode ter sido a mais afetada pelo fogo que atingiu a área em 2001, visto que uma espécie típica de ambientes antropizados passou a ocupar a primeira posição de VI. No meio, as espécies mais importantes em 2006 foram: Aspidosperma subincanum, Tetragastris altissima e Hymenaea courbaril. No baixo, apenas Mauritia flexuosa manteve a mesma posição do inventário anterior, e a maior alteração hierárquica foi apresentada pelas espécies pioneiras, sugerindo um fechamento da vegetação. Entre as 10 espécies de maior VI em 2006, nenhuma foi comum às três porções da mata. Características estruturais distintas da vegetação entre áreas geograficamente tão próximas podem estar relacionadas à heterogeneidade do ambiente. As mudanças no VI registradas nas espécies das três porções de mata reforçam a ideia de que esta apresenta elevada dinâmica.

Natural regeneration and structure and their relationship to environmental variables were studied in three sections of a gallery forest, in Eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil (14º43′S and 52º21′W). The assumption was that natural regeneration is constrained by environmental determinants at all stages of development of the tree community. The objective was to analyse the forest structure and to verify the relationship between species distribution and abundance at different stages of regeneration and environmental variables. In each section, 47 contiguous (10x10m) permanent plots were established to sample trees (gbh≥15cm), following a systematic design. Seedlings (0.01 to 1m height), saplings (1.01 to 2m) and poles (from 2.01m height to gbhFoi estudada a regeneração natural e a estrutura de três seções de uma floresta de galeria no leste de Mato Grosso, Brasil (14º43′S e 52º21′W). O objetivo foi analisar a estrutura da floresta e verificar a relação entre a distribuição e abundância das espécies nos diferentes estágios de regeneração e entre as variáveis ambientais. Em cada seção de floresta foram estabelecidas, sistematicamente, 47 parcelas (10x10m) contíguas e permanentes para amostrar as árvores (CAP≥15cm). As plântulas jovens (0,01 a 1m de altura), as plântulas maiores (1,01 a 2m) e as arvoretas (de 2,01m de altura a CAP≥15cm) foram amostradas em sub-parcelas de 1x1m, 2x2m e 5x5m, respectivamente. Para cada parcela foram determinadas as propriedades do solo, projeção das clareiras, cobertura de bambus, rochosidade, declividade e profundidade do lençol freático. A relação das variáveis ambientais com as árvores e comunidades de plântulas e arvoretas foi determinada a partir de uma análise de correspondência canônica. Apesar das seções de floresta serem próximas entre si, apresentaram diferenças importantes em relação à composição florística, estrutura e variáveis ambientais. Os solos apresentaram reduzida capacidade de troca catiônica e elevados níveis de saturação de alumínio. A ocorrência de bambus e clareiras e a profundidade do lençol freático limitam a ocorrência de arvoretas e árvores. A elevada heterogeneidade estrutural em cada categoria de regeneração esteve relacionada principalmente a um gradiente de umidade, mas a fertilidade do solo (Ca+Mg) também foi determinante nas diferentes comunidades de plântulas.

Este estudo analisou os efeitos do agrupamento de uma espécie de bambu nativa do Cerrado (Actinocladum verticillatum) sobre a composição florística, diversidade e estrutura da vegetação lenhosa de um cerradão e de um cerrado típico adjacentes no Parque Municipal do Bacaba, Nova Xavantina-MT. Foram instaladas 60 parcelas de 10x10 m, sendo 30 no cerradão e 30 no cerrado típico. Em cada fitofisionomia, foram instaladas 15 parcelas em um sítio sem bambu (SB) e 15 em um sítio com cobertura estimada de folhagem de bambu superior a 90% (CB). Foram amostrados todos os indivíduos arbustivo-arbóreos com diâmetro a 30 centímetros do solo (DAS) ≥ 3 cm. Foi avaliada a riqueza, a diversidade de espécies, a similaridade florística, a distribuição de diâmetros e alturas e o índice de valor de importância das espécies (VI). De forma geral, os sítios CB das duas fitofisionomias apresentaram menores valores quanto ao número de indivíduos, espécies, gêneros, famílias, densidades e áreas basais em relação aos sítios SB, com redução mais acentuada nestes parâmetros no cerrado típico em relação ao cerradão. Os resultados sugerem que a ocupação do espaço e a redução da incidência luminosa causada pelas touceiras do bambu dificultam a germinação das sementes e o estabelecimento das plântulas de espécies arbustivo-arbóreas, selecionando as espécies mais tolerantes ao sombreamento modificando a composição florística e a estrutura da vegetação.This study evaluated the effects of a Cerrado native bamboo species (Actinocladum verticillatum) clumps on the floristic composition, diversity and structure of the woody vegetation in two adjacent areas of “cerradão” and typical “cerrado” in the Bacaba Municipal Park, Nova Xavantina, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Sixty plots of 10 x 10 m were established, 30 in each forest physiognomy. In each physiognomy, 15 plots were placed in a bamboo-free site (SB) and 15 in a site with an estimated bamboo leaf cover of over 90% (CB). All individuals (shrubs and trees) with a diameter at soil height (DSH = 30 cm aboveground) ≥ 3 cm were sampled. Species richness and diversity, floristic similarity, diameter and height distribution, and the species importance value index (IVI) were evaluated. In general, CB sites of both physiognomies had lower values of number of individuals, species, genera, families, density and basal area compared to SB sites, with marked decrease in these parameters in the cerrado in relation to cerradão. Results suggest that the space occupation and reduction of light incidence caused by bamboo clumping affect seed germination and seedling establishment of Cerrado shrubs and trees, selecting more shade-tolerant species and changing the floristic composition and vegetation structure.

Florestas monodominantes de Brosimum rubescens Taub. (Moraceae) ocorrem na zona de transição Cerrado/Amazônia e encontram-se ameaçadas pela extração da madeira. Dentre as possíveis causas de monodominância destaca-se a disponibilidade de luz, de modo que o objetivo deste trabalho foi testar os efeitos no crescimento e na assimilação de CO2 de diferentes níveis de sombreamento em condições naturais e em viveiro. Em viveiro, os tratamentos foram 0, 30, 50, 70 e 90% de sombreamento e na floresta foram avaliadas plantas jovens crescendo sob o dossel e em clareira. A taxa de assimilação de CO2 em resposta a variações na intensidade luminosa foi medida em plantas jovens sob três condições de sombreamento. As plantas que cresceram sob o dossel fechado apresentaram taxas de crescimento relativo menores do que aquelas que cresceram na clareira. Aos 21 meses, o maior valor de massa seca total (9,46 g) foi encontrado sob 50% de sombreamento, representando um acúmulo de biomassa 144% superior ao tratamento sob 90%. Em todos os tratamentos e amostragens, a partição foi massa seca da raiz > folhas > caule. A menor taxa fotossint��tica máxima (Amáx= 3,46 µmol m-2 s¹) foi observada para 90% de sombreamento e a maior (Amáx= 7,89 µmol m-2 s-1) foi registrada sob 30% de sombreamento. Clareiras provavelmente desempenham um papel importante na manutenção da monodominância, uma vez que B. rubescens apresentou plasticidade para diferentes condições de luminosidade e maior crescimento nos níveis intermediários de sombreamento.Monodominant forests of Brosimum rubescens Taub. (Moraceae) occur at the Cerrado/Amazonia boundary and are threatened by logging. Light is considered an important determinant for monodominance in forests, so the aim of this study was to analyze initial growth at shading levels of 0, 30, 50, 70 and 90% in the nursery, in a forest gap, and also at a closed canopy site. Photosynthesis was measured in seedlings at three shading levels. Seedlings under a closed canopy showed lower relative growth rates in comparison to seedlings growing in a nearby gap. At 21 months of age, the highest total dry mass of 9.46 g was measured at 50% shading. This represents a biomass accumulation of 144% over that found at 90% shading. For all treatments in every assessment the partitioning was dry matter of roots > leaves > stems. The lowest maximum photosynthesis rate (Amax= 3.46 µmol m-2 s-1) was recorded at 90% shading and the highest (Amax= 7.89 µmol m-2 s-1) was recorded at 30% shading. Gaps seem to play an important role in maintaining monodominance since B. rubescens showed some plasticity regarding light conditions and grew better at intermediate shading levels.

The dynamics of the natural process of recuperation of the structure and diversity of native vegetation following anthropogenic disturbance has been the subject of a great deal of controversy in restoration ecology research. The present study evaluates the natural regeneration of savanna forest (cerradão) 32 and 36 years after the clear-cutting of the vegetation. We compared species diversity, and the structure and dynamics of the vegetation in two communities, one representing preserved cerradão (PC), and the other, the regenerating cerradão (RC), which was clear-cut in 1976. Surveys were conducted in 2008 and 2012, 32 and 36 years after clear-cutting, respectively. In 2008, we demarcated 81 permanent 10 m x 10 m plots, 50 in the RC and 31 in the PC, and measured all live plants with a diameter at soil level > 5 cm. In 2012, the plots were resampled, including the original plants and all the recruits. The species were classified as specialists in savanna (SA) or forest habitat (FO), or as generalists (SA/FO). The RC presented the highest species richness and diversity, density, annual increment, and mortality rates. However, no significant differences were found between communities in the distribution of specialist or generalist species, or between years (2008 and 2012) in basal area or recruitment rates. While the species composition of the two communities is highly similar, the RC was characterized by a higher frequency of SA species, and was more similar to nearby savanna communities (cerrado sensu stricto). Trees in the RC were smaller and suffered higher rates of mortality than those in the PC, but also higher annual increments. While the RC demonstrated a high degree of resilience following clear-cutting, it was still found to be at an intermediate stage of succession, even after almost four decades, indicating that regeneration is a slow process.

Manchas de Floresta monodominante de Brosimum rubescens ocorrem no ecótono entre o Cerrado e a Floresta Amazônica e encontram-se ameaçadas. Efetuou-se um estudo da chuva de sementes em duas porções de uma floresta monodominante de B. rubescens e uma floresta mista adjacente em Nova Xavantina, MT (14º50'47''S e 52º08'37''W). Partiu-se da premissa de que a floresta monodominante apresenta um padrão de chuva de sementes diferente da floresta mista, devido à maciça frutificação de B. rubescens. Em cada porção de floresta foram distribuídas aleatoriamente onze armadilhas (0,5×0,5 m), totalizando 33. Duas porções (22 armadilhas) estiveram na floresta monodominante e uma (11 armadilhas) na floresta mista e foram monitoradas entre agosto/2003 e julho/2004. As sementes foram separadas em duas categorias: dispersas pelo vento e dispersas por outro mecanismo, que não o vento, e as florestas foram comparadas em relação ao número de espécies, número de sementes e biomassa. Espécies com sementes pequenas apresentaram dispersão distribuída ao longo, enquanto sementes grandes, dispersão concentrada. A chuva de sementes foi influenciada pelo tipo de floresta e pelas estações do ano. Na floresta monodominante o pico da dispersão das sementes não dispersas pelo vento ocorreu no auge da estação seca e a maior parte da biomassa das sementes pertenceu a B. rubescens. A dispersão destas sementes no período seco pode conferir vantagens à espécie, diminuindo a competição inter-específica por agentes dispersores e/ou garantindo um recrutamento precoce. A produção de sementes grandes e em quantidade durante o período seco e a posterior formação de um extenso banco de plântulas podem ser algumas das estratégias (de ocupação de habitat) decisivas na monodominância desta espécie.Patches of monodominant Brosimum rubescens forest occur at the transition zones between the Cerrado and the Amazonian Biomes. Seed rain was studied at two sites at the monodominant forest and another site at a nearby mixed forest in Nova Xavantina, MT (14º50'47''S e 52º08'37''W). The hypothesis was that the pattern of seed rain differs at the monodominant forest from the mixed forest due to the massive fruiting of Brosimum rubescens. Eleven seed-traps (0,5×0,5 m) were set up at three portions of the forests, totalling 33 traps. Two portions (22 traps) were at the monodominant forest and one (11 traps) at a mixed forest. They were monitored from August 2003 to July 2004. The seed were classified as wind dispersed or dispersed by other mechanisms but not wind and the forests were compared regarding number and biomass of seeds and species richness. Number of seeds and biomass were compared at the three forest portions through the seasons. Wind dispersed, small seeded species were more evenly dispersed over the year that those big seed ones. Seed rain was affected by forest type and seasonality. At the monodominant forest the dispersion peak of non-wind dispersed seeds occurred at the dry season with most of the seed biomass belonging to B. rubescens. Abundant seed production, dispersion at the dry season and the development of a seedling bank, seems to be an advantage to the monodominant species. At the dry season the competition for dispersers is low, and the germination at the beginning of the rains allow the seedlings a full growth season.

O objetivo foi testar a hipótese de que a variação espacial na cobertura do dossel está relacionada com a composição florí­stica e estrutura do estrato herbáceo-arbustivo de uma floresta estacional semidecidual na transição Cerrado-Amazônia. Foram mostradas 120 parcelas de 2 x 2 m, contabilizados os indiví­duos e estimada a cobertura do dossel, em cada parcela. Foram encontradas 40 espécies, 24 gêneros e 18 famí­lias. Olyra ciliatifolia destacou-se pela elevada densidade relativa (DR= 50,3%). A cobertura do dossel apresentou-se homogênea. Foi encontrada baixa diversidade de espécies (H'= 1,92 e Ds = 0,26) e equabilidade (J'= 0,52), confirmando o que se espera para áreas com dossel homogêneo e baixa luminosidade. Não foi confirmada a hipótese de que a variação espacial na cobertura de dossel está relacionada com a composição florí­stica e a estrutura do estrato herbáceo. Entretanto, a homogeneidade do dossel pode estar favorecendo a densidade de algumas espécies tolerantes ao sombreamento.

O presente estudo realizou-se no Pantanal dos Rios Mortes-Araguaia, extensa planície inundável localizada no municípo de Cocalinho, nordeste de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Efetuou-se uma caracterização fitofisionômica e um levantamento florístico preliminar da região. Foram selecionados três Sítios, com fitofisionomias representativas: proximidades do Rio das Mortes (12° 37'S; 50° 55'W), foz do Rio das Mortes com o Araguaia (11° 54'S; 50° 48'W) e porção mediana do Rio Cristalino (12° 52'S; 50° 49'W). O método de amostragem adotado foi o de levantamentos rápidos. Foram identificadas oito fitofisionomias: Mata Inundável, Caapão, Babaçual, Cerradão, Cerrado stricto sensu, Campo de Murunduns, Campo de Byrsonima orbignyana e Campo Cerrado de Vochysia rufa. Foram levantadas 248 espécies de árvores, arbustos, sub-arbustos e lianas, distribuídas em 158 gêneros e 62 famílias. As fitofisionomias apresentaram um padrão heterogêneo, sendo que nenhuma das espécies ocorreu em todas elas. Porém, Alibertia edulis (L. Rich.) A. Rich., Andira cuyabensis Benth., Maprounea guianensis (Aubl.) M. Arg., entre outras, ocorreram em seis das oito fitofisionomias. As famílias com maior riqueza foram: Caesalpiniaceae, Annonaceae e Myrtaceae. Ocorreram algumas semelhanças florísticas com o Pantanal do Rio Paraguai, porém, são necessários estudos mais aprofundados para confirmar. Os padrões de heterogeneidade fitofisionômica indicam que a área estudada necessita de medidas conservacionistas.This study was carried out in the Pantanal of the Mortes and Araguaia rivers, a flooded plain located in Cocalinho, northeastern Mato Grosso, Brazil. The objectives of this study were to conduct a preliminary survey of the flora and to characterize the vegetation types. Three representative sites were selected: one near Rio das Mortes (12° 37'S; 50° 55'W), one at the mouth of Araguaia and Mortes rivers (11° 54'S; 50° 48'W) and one in the middle portion of the Cristalino river (12° 52'S; 50° 49'W). Sampling was by the Rapid Survey method. Eight vegetation types were identified: Mata Inundável (swamp forest), Caapão (also swamp forest), Babaçual (Attalea speciosa forest), Cerradão, Cerrado stricto sensu (savanna types, closed canopy woodland and savanna grassland, respectively), Campo de Murunduns (grassland with scattered mounds bearing termites), Campo de Byrsonima orbignyana (grassland dominated by B. orbignyana) and Campo Cerrado de Vochysia rufa (grassland with scattered trees of V. rufa). A total of 248 species of trees, shrubs and lianas were recorded, distributed in 158 genera and 62 families. The vegetation types were heterogeneous; none of the species occurred at all sites, but Alibertia edulis (L. Rich.) A. Rich., Andira cuyabensis Benth., Maprounea guianensis (Aubl.) M. Arg., and others, were found at six sites. The families richest in species were Caesalpiniaceae, Annonaceae and Myrtaceae. The flora apparently was similar to that of the Pantanal of Paraguai river, however, further studies are needed to confirm. This Heterogeneous vegetation patterns in the study area indicate the need to protect the Pantanal of the Mortes and Araguaia rivers.

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that pyrogenic carbon (biochar) has properties that enable it to replace fresh organic matter (cattle manure) in seedling substrates. These properties include specific electrophysiological interactions in soil-plant media, stability and longevity. The experiment was conducted in the nursery at the State University of Mato Grosso, located in the municipality of Nova Xavantina, between April and June 2011. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with ten treatments and four replicates, including a commercial substrate. Linear regression analysis showed a strong positive relationship between manure treatments and number of leaves, fresh and dry biomass, diameter, height and Dickson Quality Index at 30 and 40 days after sowing (DAS), with the exception of height at 30 DAS. There was no significant relationship for biochar dosage in any assessment for these parameters. The use of substrates with different dosages of cattle manure resulted in an increase of seedling quality compared to biochar and commercial substrates. The hypothesis that biochar can be substituted for fresh organic matter and is more stable in the substrate was not supported.

Neste estudo foram avaliadas as mudanças na composição florística e na estrutura da vegetação lenhosa logo após incêndio acidental ocorrido em sítios de cerrado típico sem (SB, controle) e com (CB) agrupamentos do bambu Actinocladum verticillatum em Nova Xavantina/MT. Foram amostrados todos os indivíduos com diâmetro de base (Db30) ≥ 3 cm antes e após o fogo em ambos os sítios. A amostragem foi realizada em 30 parcelas de 10 × 10 m, sendo 15 parcelas em cada sítio. A ocorrência de fogo ocasionou mudanças na composição florística e reduções na riqueza e diversidade de espécies lenhosas mais evidentes no sítio CB (perda de 61% das espécies) em relação ao SB (perda de 20% das espécies). Entretanto, o incêndio ocasionou perda relativa de indivíduos (67,4% e 73,5%) e de área basal (75,6% e 55,2%) semelhante entre os sítios SB e CB, respectivamente, com exceção dos indivíduos de pequeno porte, os quais foram mais acentuadamente reduzidos no sítio CB. Queimadas em áreas de cerrado com agrupamentos de A. verticillatum podem criar condições de retroalimentação positiva e resultar na redução da densidade de indivíduos e na exclusão local de espécies menos tolerantes ao fogo.

Abstract Differences in substrates can provoke distinct responses in the dynamics of a plant community. We compared changes the floristic, structural and dynamic parameters of the woody vegetation between burned sites dominated by cerrado típico (CT) and cerrado rupestre (CR), which is characterized by the presence of rocky outcrops, over time. We set up 10 plots (20 m × 50 m) at each site. All individuals (diameter of ≥ 3 cm at 30 cm height above the ground) were identified in the two censuses (2009 and 2012) and measured (stem diameter), after an accidental fire in 2008. Changes in floristic parameters between the CT and CR were not significant. However, we found significant differences (p < 0.05) in structural and dynamic parameters, such as density (CT = 1,523; CR = 2,171 ind.ha-1), basal area (CT = 8.70; CR = 13.00 m2.ha-1), recruitment rates (CT = 24.35; CR = 15.14% year-1; p = 0.01), gain (CT = 8.58; CR= 3.58% year-1), and the loss rates of basal area (CT = 3.88; CR= 2.45% year-1). These differences emphasize the need for a differential evaluation of these sites for the development of effective conservation strategies.

Abstract Vegetation changes in transition zones are still poorly studied. Changes in the vegetation structure of a savanna forest (cerradão) were assessed in the Amazon-Cerrado transition (14º42'2.3"S; 52º21'2.6"W), eastern Mato Grosso, within a period of six years (2002, 2005 and 2008). In 2002, fifty plots of 10 × 10 m were set up, where all trees with DSH30 ≥ 5 cm were measured; in 2005 and 2008 the plots were re-inventoried. In 2008, 84 species from 70 genera and 37 families were sampled; absolute density was 1,998 individuals/ha and basal area was 25.95 m2.ha-1. On the one hand, the absolute density of live individuals decreased from 2005 to 2008 (2,066 individuals/ha); on the other hand, the basal area increased in 2008 compared to 2005 (23.56 m2.ha-1) and 2002 (1,884 individuals/ha and 21.38 m2.ha-1). The species with the highest importance value in the period were Hirtella glandulosa, Tachigali vulgaris and Xylopia aromatica. Except for these three species, all other species underwent hierarchic changes in the importance value, indicating that most species frequently alternate. Community structure exhibited changes throughout the period; hence, we suggest investigations on the role of T. vulgaris in these changes, since environmental conditions caused by gap opening from the fall of senile individuals of this pioneer species with a short life cycle may contribute to community dynamics.

Testamos a hipótese de que a baixa diversidade de espécies lenhosas em uma floresta monodominante e possíveis fatores ambientais associados influenciam a ocorrência de samambaias na transição Cerrado-Floresta Amazônica. O objetivo foi analisar e comparar a riqueza florística, cobertura de dossel e aspectos ecológicos das samambaias em florestas de transição. As samambaias foram amostradas em uma floresta monodominante de Brosimum rubescens Taub. (MO) e uma floresta estacional mista (MI) em Nova Xavantina-MT. O substrato terrícola, a forma de vida hemicriptófita e o hábito herbáceo foram predominantes. A diversidade de espécies lenhosas foi superior à de samambaias, que apresentaram um total de 304 indivíduos, sete espécies, quatro gêneros e duas famílias. A família de maior riqueza foi Pteridaceae, representada por cinco espécies (71%). A floresta MI apresentou seis espécies, destacando-se Adiantum tetraphyllum Willd. com 209 indivíduos. Na MO foram encontradas apenas duas espécies, corroborando a hipótese de que a baixa diversidade de lenhosas influencia na diversidade de samambaias. Provavelmente, a cobertura do dossel, a qualidade da serapilheira e/ou fatores edáficos podem estar relacionados com a baixa diversidade de samambaias na MO, uma vez que tais condições podem atuar como filtro de espécies no ambiente monodominante, favorecendo somente as mais competitivas e adaptadas.
