The ideas of this forum germinated at the Organizational Communication Division’s pre-conference at the 106th annual convention of the National Communication Association (NCA) in 2020. A group of scholar-teachers, committed to addressing various critical social issues, came together to challenge dominant ideas, paradigms, and structures within and beyond organizational communication. We engaged with decolonization and social justice as an ongoing project that cultivates scholarship, pedagogy, and public engagement. Our discussions left us with a sense of urgency and inspiration to work substantively toward thinking differently about organizational communication. Our goal in this forum is to present the collective as a sharp provocation to decenter the spaces of theorizing and pedagogical practices in organizational communication and beyond.

AimThe climate variability hypothesis proposes that species subjected to wide variation in climatic conditions will evolve wider niches, resulting in larger distributions. We test this hypothesis in tropical plants across a broad elevational gradient; specifically, we use a species-level approach to evaluate whether elevational range sizes are explained by the levels of thermal variability experienced by species.LocationCentral AndesTime periodPresent dayMajor taxa studiedWoody plantsMethodsCombining data from 479 forest plots, we determined the elevational distributions of nearly 2300 species along an elevational gradient (∼209 – 3800 m). For each species, we calculated the maximum annual variation in temperature experienced across its elevational distribution. We used phylogenetic generalized least square models to evaluate the effect of thermal variability on range size. Our models included additional covariates that might affect range size: body size, local abundance, mean temperature and total precipitation. We also considered interactions between thermal variability and mean temperature or precipitation. To account for geometric constraints, we repeated our analyses with a standardized measure of range size, calculated by comparing observed range sizes with values obtained from a null model.ResultsOur results supported the main prediction of the climate variability hypothesis. Thermal variability had a strong positive effect on the range size, with species exposed to higher thermal variability having broader elevational distributions. Body size and local abundance also had positive, yet weak effects, on elevational range size. Furthermore, there was a strong positive interaction between thermal variability and mean annual temperature.Main conclusionsThermal variability had an overriding importance in driving elevational range sizes of woody plants in the Central Andes. Moreover, the relationship between thermal variability and range size might be even stronger in warmer regions, underlining the potential vulnerability of tropical montane floras to the effects of global warming.

Recent studies have demonstrated that ecological processes that shape community structure and dynamics change along environmental gradients. However, much less is known about how the emergence of the gradients themselves shape the evolution of species that underlie community assembly. In this study, we address how the creation of novel environments leads to community assembly via two nonmutually exclusive processes: immigration and ecological sorting of pre-adapted clades (ISPC), and recent adaptive diversification (RAD). We study these processes in the context of the elevational gradient created by the uplift of the Central Andes. We develop a novel approach and method based on the decomposition of species turnover into within- and among-clade components, where clades correspond to lineages that originated before mountain uplift. Effects of ISPC and RAD can be inferred from how components of turnover change with elevation. We test our approach using data from over 500 Andean forest plots. We found that species turnover between communities at different elevations is dominated by the replacement of clades that originated before the uplift of the Central Andes. Our results suggest that immigration and sorting of clades pre-adapted to montane habitats is the primary mechanism shaping tree communities across elevations.

Background: Enteral nutrition (EN) is the preferred route of nutrition in the critically ill patients. However, EN is not always able to provide optimal nutrient provision and parenteral nutrition (PN) is needed. We examined factors associated with the need of PN after start of EN, together with the use and complications associated with EN.Methods: Adult patients admitted to 38 Spanish intensive care units (ICUs) between April and July 2018, who needed EN therapy were included in a prospective observational study. The characteristics of EN-treated patients and those who required PN after start EN were analyzed.Results: Of a total of 443 patients, 43 (9.7%) received PN. One-third (29.3%) of patients presented EN-related complications, which were more frequent among those needing PN (26% vs. 60%, P=0.001). No differences regarding mean energy and protein delivery were found between patients treated only with EN and those needing supplementary or total PN. Abnormalities in lipid profile, blood proteins, and inflammatory markers, such as C-Reactive Protein, were showed in those patients needing PN. Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) on ICU admission (Hazard ratio [HR]:1.161, 95% confidence interval [CI].1.053-1.281, P=0.003) and modified Nutrition Risk in Critically Ill (mNUTRIC) score (HR:1.311, 95% CI:1.098-1.565, P=0.003) were higher among those who needed PN. In the multivariate analysis, higher SOFA score (HR:1.221, 95% CI:1.057-1.410, P=0.007) and higher triglyceride levels on ICU admission (HR:1.004, 95% CI:1.001-1.007, P=0.003) were associated with an increased risk for the need of PN, whereas higher albumin levels on ICU admission (HR:0.424, 95% CI:0.210-0.687, P=0.016) was associated with lower need of PN.Conclusion: Higher SOFA and nutrition-related laboratory parameters on ICU admission may be associated with the need of PN after starting EN therapy. This may ultimately be related with the occurrence of gastro-intestinal dysfunction, severe inflammatory response, and disease severity. Retrospectively registered on 17 August 2018.

We present a new altitudinal record for Salta Toad, Rhinella rumbolli (Carrizo, 1992). This species is recorded in northern Argentina and southern Bolivia from 700 to 1800 m a.s.l. Our new record comes from San Lorencito, Méndez Province, Tarija Department, Bolivia, and extends the altitudinal range by 569 m a.s.l.

Y revisamos los casos en los que se realizaron RM en pacientes con este tipo de catéter.En la simulación, la punta del catéter peritoneal autoposicionante provoca un artefacto de susceptibilidad magnética que dificulta la visión de zonas cercanas, pero se comporta como dispositivo seguro para la RM. Se realizaron 14 RM en pacientes con catéteres autoposicionantes, ninguna en la zona abdominal. No hubo complicaciones en los pacientes ni en la técnica tras la realización de RM. Background: The importance of artificial nutritional therapy is underrecognized, typically being considered an adjunctive rather than a primary therapy. We aimed to evaluate the influence of nutritional therapy on mortality in critically ill patients.Methods: This multicenter prospective observational study included adult patients needing artificial nutritional therapy for >48 h if they stayed in one of 38 participating intensive care units for ≥72 h between April and July 2018. Demographic data, comorbidities, diagnoses, nutritional status and therapy (type and details for ≤14 days), and outcomes were registered in a database. Confounders such as disease severity, patient type (e.g., medical, surgical or trauma), and type and duration of nutritional therapy were also included in a multivariate analysis, and hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were reported.Results: We included 639 patients among whom 448(70.1%) and 191(29.9%) received enteral and parenteral nutrition, respectively. Mortality was 25.6%, with non-survivors having the following characteristics: older age; more comorbidities; higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores (6.6±3.3 vs 8.4±3.7; P); greater nutritional risk (Nutrition Risk in the Critically Ill [NUTRIC] score: 3.8±2.1 vs 5.2±1.7; P); more vasopressor requirements (70.4% vs 83.5%; P=0.001); and more renal replacement therapy (12.2% vs 23.2%; P=0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that older age (HR: 1.023; 95% CI: 1.008–1.038; P=0.003), higher SOFA score (HR: 1.096; 95% CI: 1.036–1.160; P=0.001), higher NUTRIC score (HR: 1.136; 95% CI: 1.025–1.259; P=0.015), requiring parenteral nutrition after starting enteral nutrition (HR: 2.368; 95% CI: 1.168–4.798; P=0.017), and a higher mean Kcal/Kg/day intake (HR: 1.057; 95% CI: 1.015–1.101; P=0.008) were associated with mortality. By contrast, a higher mean protein intake protected against mortality (HR: 0.507; 95% CI: 0.263–0.977; P=0.042).Conclusions: Old age, higher organ failure scores, and greater nutritional risk appear to be associated with higher mortality. Patients who need parenteral nutrition after starting enteral nutrition may represent a high-risk subgroup for mortality due to illness severity and problems receiving appropriate nutritional therapy. Mean calorie and protein delivery also appeared to influence outcomes.Trial Registration: ClinicaTrials.gov NCT: 03634943.

We draw upon transnational feminism as a theoretical resource to outline decolonial thinking for feminist organizational communication in this essay. Decolonial perspectives in transnational feminism reinforce antiracist, anticapitalist, and anti-imperial interventions in theory, practice and activism. We argue that the assumptions of neoliberal hegemony and imperial legacy remain largely unchallenged in feminist organizational communication research and call for rigorous examination of global capitalism and its close links with colonization of knowledge to make the project of the empire visible. Our recommendations urge shifting dominant sites of knowledge-making to epistemologies of disenfranchised women and generating insurgent knowledges by carefully forging non-exploitative collaborative relationships with activists and communities of struggle. We hope these agendas offer new imaginings to decolonize imperial legacies, address historical absences and silences, and invigorate social justice orientation in the field.

Cancer of unknown primary is defined as a heterogeneous group of tumours that present with metastasis, and in which attempts to identify the original site have failed. They differ from other primary tumours in their biological features and how they spread, which means they can be considered a separate entity. There are several hypotheses regarding their origin, but the most plausible explanation for their aggressiveness and chemoresistance seems to involve chromosomal instability. Depending on the type of study done, cancer of unknown primary can account for 2-9% of all cancer patients, mostly 60-75 years old. This article reviews the main clinical, pathological and molecular studies conducted to analyse and determine the origin of cancer of unknown primary. The main strategies for patient management and treatment, by both clinicians and pathologists, are also addressed.

Although snakebite incidence is underestimated in Bolivia, the Amazon region presents the highest incidence of these accidents. The local effects of bites by some non-front-fanged colubroid (NFFC) snakes are usually confused with that of viperids, resulting in the improper use of antivenoms and medications. Since there is scarce information on clinical treatment and management of NFFC bites from Bolivian Amazon, we conducted a prospective study of NFFC snakebites by reviewing the records of patients admitted with a snakebite diagnosis at Hospital Central Ivirgarzama, Bolivia. Snakebites were recorded for 12 months (December 2019–November 2020), including information about the sex and age of the patient, snakebite date, and treatment. Eight (5.7 %) of 152 patients were bitten by NFFC Helicops angulatus, Hydrops triangularis, and Erythrolamprus sp. Our results showed that 5/7 patients had prolonged clotting time and INR, as well as local edema and mild pain, suggesting systemic envenoming. Previously non-documented mild coagulopathy was observed for H. angulatus and H. triangularis bites. In some cases, incorrect first-aid measures, and inappropriate use of bothropic/lachesic antivenom were administrated. All the patients received supportive therapy and antihistamine drugs. Unsupported use of non-evidence-based treatments for snakebites such as corticoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and prophylactic antibiotic prescription were recorded. In conclusion, we describe the first formally documented snakebite cases produced by NFFC from Bolivia, highlighting the urgent need for training of the medical team in the snake identification, clinical management of snakebite, and the existence of a human-snake conflict involving NFFC species.

Background & methods: Capecitabine and temozolomide chemotherapy was used in 65 patients with grade 1/2 neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). 46 patients (70.8%) had pancreatic NETs (pNETs). Results: Response rate was 47.7%, with two complete responses (3.1%), 29 partial responses (44.6%) and 27 patients (41.5%) achieved stable disease. Median progression-free survival was 16.1 months (95% CI: 10.7–21.6) and overall survival was 38.3 months (95% CI: 24.6–51.9). Differences in progression-free survival and overall survival between pNETs and non-pNETs were not found. Nine (13.8%) patients experienced grade 3/4 toxicities, mainly thrombocytopenia (10.8%) and neutropenia (7.7%). Conclusion: This is the largest reported series of NETs treated with capecitabine and temozolomide in daily practice and shows that this combination is a promising treatment option for both grade 1/2 pNETs and non-pNETs.

Aim To evaluate the association between mode of birth and the resumption of sexual intercourse, self-reported decline in sexual intercourse and dyspareunia in women at the 6th week and 6th month postpartum. Background Interest in the relationship between mode of birth and postpartum sexual functioning is increasing. However, previous findings are contradictory. Design Prospective, longitudinal, observational study. Method The participants comprised 552 healthy primiparous women aged 18–45 years who gave birth at a hospital between February 2013 - April 2014. Interviews were performed at the hospital and via telephone at the 6th week and 6th month postpartum. We constructed multivariate logistic regression models to examine the relationship between mode of birth and resumption of intercourse, self-reported decline in sexual intercourse and dyspareunia at the 6th week and 6th month postpartum. Results At the 6th week postpartum, forceps-assisted birth, combination of episiotomy plus perineal tear and belonging to a higher socio-economic status were related to a higher risk of non-resumption of sexual intercourse, while breastfeeding was related to a higher probability of dyspareunia. At the 6th month postpartum, the likelihood of self-reported decline in sexual intercourse was higher among women who screened positive for postpartum depression and a higher number of breastfeeding women reported a decline in sexual intercourse and dyspareunia. Furthermore, at the 6th month postpartum, women who reported the use of emergency services for a health problem had a higher risk of not having resumed intercourse and of experiencing dyspareunia.

Aquatic ecotoxicity assays used to assess ecological risk assume that organisms living in a contaminated habitat are forcedly exposed to the contamination. This assumption neglects the ability of organisms to detect and avoid contamination by moving towards less disturbed habitats, as long as connectivity exists. In fluvial systems, many environmental parameters vary spatially and thus condition organisms' habitat selection. We assessed the preference of zebra fish (Danio rerio) when exposed to water samples from two western Ecuadorian rivers with apparently distinct disturbance levels: Pescadillo River (highly disturbed) and Oro River (moderately disturbed). Using a non-forced exposure system in which water samples from each river were arranged according to their spatial sequence in the field and connected to allow individuals to move freely among samples, we assayed habitat selection by D. rerio to assess environmental disturbance in the two rivers. Fish exposed to Pescadillo River samples preferred downstream samples near the confluence zone with the Oro River. Fish exposed to Oro River samples preferred upstream waters. When exposed to samples from both rivers simultaneously, fish exhibited the same pattern of habitat selection by preferring the Oro River samples. Given that the rivers are connected, preference for the Oro River enabled us to predict a depression in fish populations in the Pescadillo River. Although these findings indicate higher disturbance levels in the Pescadillo River, none of the physical-chemical variables measured was significantly correlated with the preference pattern towards the Oro River. Non-linear spatial patterns of habitat preference suggest that other environmental parameters like urban or agricultural contaminants play an important role in the model organism's habitat selection in these rivers. The non-forced exposure system represents a habitat selection-based approach that can serve as a valuable tool to unravel the factors that dictate organisms' spatial distribution in connected ecosystems.

Many studies analyzing the relative contribution of soil properties versus distance-related processes on plant species composition have focused on lowland tropical forests. Very few have investigated two forest types simultaneously, to contrast ecological processes that assemble the communities. This study analyses—at the landscape scale—the relative contribution of soil and distance on lowland and submontane tropical forests, which co-occur in two reserves of the Azuero peninsula (Panama). Floristic inventories and soil sampling were conducted in 81 0.1-ha plots clustered in 27 sites, and data were analyzed using Mantel tests, variance partitioning and non-metric multidimensional scaling. The largest differences in floristic composition occurred between reserves in both forest types. Soil variation and geographic distance were important determinants of floristic composition, but their effects were highly correlated; together they explained 7–25 percent and 46–50 percent of the variation in lowland and submontane forests, respectively. Soil variables that had the best correlations with floristic composition were iron, zinc, and silt content in lowland, and calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and sand content in submontane forests. The studied forests showed a high beta diversity that seems to be related primarily with soils and, secondarily, with dispersal limitation and stochastic events. The results reveal a response of tree assemblages to environmental gradients, which are particularly conspicuous in Panama. The effects of limited dispersal seem to be more important in submontane than in lowland forests, probably as a result of higher isolation.

Results Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at the 6 months MRI was higher after IV metoprolol (48.7 � 9.9% vs. 45.0 � 11.7% in control subjects; adjusted treatment effect 3.49%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.44% to 6.55%; p ¼ 0.025). The occurrence of severely depressed LVEF (� 35%) at 6 months was significantly lower in patients treated with IV metoprolol (11% vs. 27%, p ¼ 0.006). The proportion of patients fulfilling Class I indications for an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) was significantly lower in the IV metoprolol group (7% vs. 20%, p ¼ 0.012). At a median follow-up of 2 years, occurrence of the pre-specified composite of death, heart failure admission, reinfarction, and malignant arrhythmias was 10.8% in the IV metoprolol group versus 18.3% in the control group, adjusted hazard ratio (HR): 0.55; 95% CI: 0.26 to 1.04; p ¼ 0.065. Heart failure admission was significantly lower in the IV metoprolol group (HR: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.015 to 0.95; p ¼ 0.046).

Hydrogen, within the so called Hydrogen Economy, has the potential to become the energy carrier of the future which could change entirely the energy industry. It could help to change to a more reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly energy sector. Hydrogen Economy is based on different technologies which are related to the scientific and industrial sectors. Thus, all equipment included within hydrogen technologies are in an experimental stage or in a too early market, safety being one of the research lines followed in the design and use of these equipment and devices. This paper includes the design and implementation of different building works to have a place to operate in a safe way electrolyzers and fuel cell systems that belong to a research project in which Centro Nacional del Hidrogeno (CNH2) is taking part in its current facilities. Because of working with hydrogen, the whole design was considered from the point of view of the potential to generate explosive atmospheres.

Background Health-related quality of life of women in the postpartum period may depend on the mode of birth. However, previous findings are contradictory. Aim To explore health-related quality of life of women at the sixth week and sixth month postpartum by mode of birth. Methods We performed a longitudinal prospective study in Spain that included 546 healthy primiparae aged 18 to 45 years who gave birth to a healthy newborn. At the sixth week and sixth month postpartum, we analysed sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and compared health-related quality of life (measured using the SF-36) by mode of birth (normal vaginal, forceps, vacuum-extraction, elective caesarean section, emergency caesarean section). In addition, we analysed the change in health-related quality of life between the two time points for each mode of birth. Findings We did not find differences in health-related quality of life by mode of birth at the sixth week or sixth month postpartum. At the sixth week postpartum, regardless of the mode of birth, women with postpartum urinary incontinence reported lower health-related quality of life. Between the sixth week and sixth month postpartum, health-related quality of life improved for all modes of birth. Conclusion While mode of birth is not directly associated with health-related quality of life, it does have an indirect relationship in the short term. Women who reported the lowest health-related quality of life were those with postpartum urinary incontinence. Most women with postpartum urinary incontinence were in the forceps group.

Pollen limitation may have important consequences for the reproduction and abundance of plant species. It may be especially harmful to endangered and endemic plants with small populations. In this study, we quantify the effect of pollen limitation on seed production and seedling emergence in an endangered narrow endemic crucifer, Erysimum popovii. We conducted a pollen addition experiment across the entire geographic distribution of the species, and explored the effect of pollinator assemblage, plant population size and density, and other habitat variables on pollen limitation intensity in 13 populations. We supplemented flowers in 20 plants per population with allogamous pollen. To account for potential resource reallocation, we used two types of control untreated flowers: internal control flowers from the same individual as the supplemented flowers, and external control flowers from other individuals. Our results indicate that E. popovii is pollen-limited in most of the populations studied, but only through seed production, since pollen supplementation did not enhance seedling emergence. Beefly abundance was associated with among-population differences in pollen limitation intensity. Populations in which beeflies were more abundant were less pollen-limited. In contrast, the abundance of other flower visitors, such as large bees or butterflies, was not associated with pollen limitation. Annual rainfall and bare soil cover were associated with the intensity of pollen limitation across populations.

Introduction there is little scientific evidence on the relationship between maternal quality of life and type of infant feeding. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in mother's quality of life by type of infant feeding. Material and methods longitudinal prospective study with 364 women who gave birth at a public hospital at Madrid, Spain, between February and October 2013. To be included, the participants had to be a healthy primigravida aged 18–45 years who gave birth to a healthy newborn with a gestational age between 36 and 42 completed weeks, regardless of birth type. The hospital interviews were performed between 36 and 48 hours post partum in women who had case of vaginal/instrumental births and 60–72 hours post partum for women who had a caesarean birth. Telephone interviews were conducted at the sixth week and sixth month post partum, and included the SF-36 to measure quality of life. SF-36 scores were compared between breast feeding and artificial milk feeding. We also analysed the longitudinal change in SF-36 scores in both groups. Results at the sixth week post partum, regardless of the infant feeding modality, an increased mental health score was recorded for mothers who reported that their children ate and slept well and for those who did not go to the emergency hospital service because of concern over their baby's health. No significant differences in quality of life were found between the two groups at six months post partum. Between the sixth week and sixth month post partum, quality of life improved significantly in both groups. Discussion at the sixth week post partum, the proportion of children who ate and slept well and did not have to attend in an emergency hospital service was higher in the breast feeding group. This observation was associated with greater maternal quality of life. This positive indirect relationship between breast feeding and quality of life should be considered an additional maternal health benefit in the short term.

In the present paper it is analyzed the solar radiation measured in San Luis city during seven years (2000–2006). Values of clarity index and clear days fraction are obtained, verifying the Suerhcke relationship, comparing average values measured against the obtained values also by the models of Angstrom‐Prescott, of Reitvel, and of Glover and McCulloch. It is analyzed the diffuse fraction of the global solar radiation, finding the correlation between Kd and Kt proposed by Page, and the percentage of cloudy, partially cloudy and clear sky days are also found, seeking to find a relationship with the ENSO phenomena.
