1. Topological phase transitions in a constrained two-qubit quantum control landscape

Abstract

In optimal quantum control, control landscape phase transitions (CLPTs) indicate sharp changes occurring in the set of optimal protocols, as a physical model parameter is varied. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a new class of CLPTs, associated with changes in the topological properties of the optimal level set in a two-qubit state-preparation problem. In particular, the distance distribution of control protocols sampled through stochastic homotopic dynamics reveals discontinuous changes in the number of connected components in the optimal level set, as a function of the protocol duration. We demonstrate how topological CLPTs can be detected in modern-day experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

2. Towards a theory of phase transitions in quantum control landscapes

Abstract

Control landscape phase transitions (CLPTs) occur as abrupt changes in the cost function landscape upon varying a control parameter, and can be revealed by non-analytic points in statistical order parameters. A prime example are quantum speed limits (QSL) which mark the onset of controllability as the protocol duration is increased. Here we lay the foundations of an analytical theory for CLPTs by developing Dyson, Magnus, and cumulant expansions for the cost function that capture the behavior of CLPTs with a controlled precision. Using linear and quadratic stability analysis, we reveal that CLPTs can be associated with different types of instabilities of the optimal protocol. This allows us to explicitly relate CLPTs to critical structural rearrangements in the extrema of the control landscape: utilizing path integral methods from statistical field theory, we trace back the critical scaling of the order parameter at the QSL to the topological and geometric properties of the set of optimal protocols, such as the number of connected components and its dimensionality. We verify our predictions by introducing a numerical sampling algorithm designed to explore this optimal set via a homotopic stochastic update rule. We apply this new toolbox explicitly to analyze CLPTs in the single- and two-qubit control problems whose landscapes are analytically tractable, and compare the landscapes for bang-bang and continuous protocols. 3. Non-Noetherian Conformal Cheshire Effect

Abstract

The gravitational Cheshire effect refers to the possibility of turning off the gravitational field while still leaving an imprint of the nonminimal coupling of matter to gravity. This allows nontrivial solutions in flat spacetime for which no backreaction is possible. The effect was originally shown to manifest itself for standard nonminimal couplings, such as those allowing conventional conformally invariant scalar fields. Recently, the most general scalar field action yielding a conformally invariant second-order equation was constructed, and entails a more involved nonminimal coupling explicitly breaking the conformal invariance of the action without spoiling it in the equation. We have succeeded in fully describing the spherically symmetric stealth solutions on flat spacetime supporting the Cheshire effect within this general non-Noetherian conformal theory. The allowed configurations are divided into two branches: The first one essentially corresponds to an extension of the solutions already known for the standard Noetherian conformal theory. The second branch is only possible due to the non-Noetherian conformal contribution of the action. The complete characterization of this branch is expressed by a nonlinear first-order partial differential equation. We have found the general solution of this equation using both seemingly new and well-established mathematical tools.

7. Nonlinearly charging the conformally dressed black holes preserving duality and conformal invariance

Abstract

We start this paper by concisely rederiving ModMax, which is nothing but the unique nonlinear extension of Maxwell's equations preserving conformal and duality invariance. The merit of this new derivation is its transparency and simplicity since it is based on an approach where the elusive duality invariance is manifest. In the second part, we couple the ModMax electrodynamics to Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant together with a standard conformal scalar field, and new stationary spacetimes with dyonic charges are found. These solutions are later used as seed configurations to generate nonlinearly charged (super-)renormalizably dressed spacetimes by means of a known generating method that we extend to include any nonlinear conformal electrodynamics. We end by addressing the issue of how to generalize some of these results to include the recently studied non-Noetherian conformal scalar fields, whose equation of motion still enjoys conformal symmetry even though its action does not. 16. On the Continuity Equation in Space-Time Algebra: Multivector Waves, Poynting, Diffusion, and a Derivation of Maxwell's Equations by Symmetries

Abstract

Historically and to date, the continuity equation has served as a consistency criterion for the development of physical theories. Employing Clifford's geometric algebras, a system of continuity equations for a generalised multivector of the space-time algebra (STA) is constructed. Associated with this continuity system, a system of wave equations is constructed, the Poynting multivector is defined, and decoupling conditions are determined. The diffusion equation is explored from the continuity system, where it is found that for decoupled systems with constant or explicitly-dependent diffusion coefficients the absence of external vector sources implies a loss in the diffusion equation structure being transformed to Helmholtz-like or wave systems. From the symmetry transformations that make the continuity equations system's structure invariant, a system with the structure of Maxwell's field equations is derived. The Maxwellian system allows for the construction of potentials and fields directly linked with the continuity of a generalised multivector in STA. The results found are consistent with the classical electromagnetic theory and hydrodynamics.

21. Parametrizing Clifford Algebras' Matrix Generators with Euler Angles

Abstract

A parametrization, given by the Euler angles, of Hermitian matrix generators of even and odd-degenerate Clifford algebras is constructed by means of the Kronecker product of a parametrized version of Pauli matrices and by the identification of all possible anticommutation sets for a given algebra. The internal parametrization of the matrix generators allows a straightforward interpretation in terms of rotations, and in the absence of a similarity transformation can be reduced to the canonical representations by an appropriate choice of parameters. The parametric matrix generators of 2nd and 4th-order are linearly decomposed in terms of Pauli, Dirac, and 4th-order Gell-Mann matrices establishing a direct correspondence between the bases. In addition, and with the expectation for further applications in group theory, a linear decomposition of GL(4) matrices on the basis of the parametric 4th-order matrix generators and in terms of four-vector parameters is explored. By establishing unitary conditions, a parametrization of two sub-groups of SU(4) is achieved.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 binding to ACE2 is potentially associated with severe pneumonia due to COVID-19. The aim of the study was to test whether Mas-receptor activation by 20-hydroxyecdysone (BIO101) could restore the Renin-Angiotensin System equilibrium and limit the frequency of respiratory failure and mortality in adults hospitalized with severe COVID-19. METHODS: Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase 2/3 trial. Randomization: 1:1 oral BIO101 (350 mg BID) or placebo, up to 28 days or until an endpoint was reached. Primary endpoint: mortality or respiratory failure requiring high-flow oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation. Key secondary endpoint: hospital discharge following recovery (ClinicalTrials.gov Number, NCT04472728). FINDINGS: Due to low recruitment the planned sample size of 310 was not reached and 238 patients were randomized between August 26, 2020 and March 8, 2022. In the modified ITT population (233 patients; 126 BIO101 and 107 placebo), respiratory failure or early death by day 28 was 11.4% lower in the BIO101 (13.5%) than in the placebo (24.3%) group, (p = 0.0426). At day 28, proportions of patients discharged following recovery were 80.1%, and 70.9% in the BIO101 and placebo group respectively, (adjusted difference 11.0%, 95% CI [-0.4%, 22.4%], p = 0.0586). Hazard Ratio for time to death over 90 days: 0.554 (95% CI [0.285, 1.077]), a 44.6% mortality reduction in the BIO101 group (not statistically significant). Treatment emergent adverse events of respiratory failure were more frequent in the placebo group. INTERPRETATION: BIO101 significantly reduced the risk of death or respiratory failure supporting its use in adults hospitalized with severe respiratory symptoms due to COVID-19. FUNDING: Biophytis.

24. Uniqueness of the Jackiw non-Noetherian conformal scalar field

Abstract

Jackiw was undoubtedly the first to exhibit an example of a scalar field action which is not conformally invariant whereas its equation of motion is. This feature has recently been dubbed as a non-Noetherian conformal scalar field. The paradigmatic example of Jackiw was the generalization to curved spacetime of the two-dimensional Liouville action. Here, we prove that, up to second order, this is the unique example of a non-Noetherian conformal scalar field in two dimensions. Abstract

Recently, an extension of the standard four-dimensional scalar conformal action, yielding a second-order field equation that remains conformally invariant, was proposed. In spite of this, the corresponding action is not invariant under conformal transformations and this motivates us to define the notion of non-Noetherian conformal scalar field. In this article, we go further by determining the most general action in four dimensions that gives rise to a non-Noetherian conformal scalar field satisfying a second-order equation. This task is achieved by using the solution to the inverse problem of the calculus of variations. Surprisingly enough, the standard equation is shown to be extended by a non-Noetherian conformal piece involving a nonminimal coupling with a very particular combination of squared curvature terms, which is none other than the one defining the so-called Critical Gravity. We also prove that the most general second-order Euler-Lagrange equation for a conformal scalar field involves additional Noetherian conformal nonminimal couplings defined by an arbitrary function of the Weyl tensor. Abstract

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Abstract

During the later years of technological innovation, e-learning systems have demonstrated to be an effective way to improve perceived educational quality and overcome time and place constraints. Virtual communication, instruction and evaluation have become an important part of higher education. However, although e-learning has been implemented extensively, its operation and success might differ between organisations due to institutional capacity and resources. With this in mind, the objective of this research is to distinguish between public and private universities, in the sense of the e-learning system quality and the perceived institutional support, as means to achieve users' intention to continue using e-learning. Analysing the information from 270 Spanish teachers and students in e-learning systems at public and private universities, we concluded that information, service, and perceived educational quality determine continuous e-learning use at public universities, while perceived institutional support acts as a mediator between the information and perceived educational quality and the continued use, in the case of the private universities. Valuable recommendations for higher-education institutions' management suggest that innovative tools for interaction and organisation, cooperation of public and private universities, and investment in technology and human resources are vital for continuity of e-learning systems.

34. Unveiling the electrodynamics of the first nonlinearly charged rotating black hole

Abstract

After many years of efforts, the first nonlinearly charged rotating black hole has been finally reported by Garcia-Diaz in two recent works. This is an important result that was pending in General Relativity, since nonlinear generalizations of the Kerr-Newman solution were not yet known. Unfortunately, the Lagrangian supporting this configuration cannot be expressible in terms of the standard invariants using elementary functions. In the present work we circumvent this problem by using the formulations of nonlinear electrodynamics in terms of mixed electromagnetic eigenvalues, introduced by Salazar, Garcia-Diaz and Plebanski almost four decades ago. In doing so, we prove that the underlying theory becomes fully determined, and hence the new found nonlinearly charged stationary axisymmetric spacetimes correspond to exact solutions of a well-defined self-gravitating nonlinear electrodynamics whose fundamental structural functions are provided here., Comment: 4 pages

Abstract

We construct the first analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions with higher Baryon charge in four dimensions for the $SU(3)$-Skyrme-Einstein-$\Lambda$ theory by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the approach developed by Balachandran et al. to describe the first (numerical) example of a non-embedded solution. These are genuine $SU(3)$ analytic solutions instead of trivial embeddings of $SU(2)$ into $SU(3)$ and its geometry is that of a Bianchi IX Universe. The Skyrme ansatz is chosen in such a way that the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied in the sector with Baryon charge 4. The field equations reduce to a dynamical system for the three Bianchi IX scale factors. Particular solutions are explicitly analyzed. Traversable wormholes with NUT-AdS asymptotics supported by a topologically non-trivial $SU(3)$-sigma soliton are also constructed. The self-gravitating solutions admit also a suitable flat limit giving rise to Skyrmions of charge 4 confined in a box of finite volume maintaining the integrability of the $SU(3)$ Skyrme field equations. This formalism discloses a novel transition at finite Baryon density arising from the competition between embedded and non-embedded solutions in which the non-embedded solutions prevail at high density while are suppressed at low densities., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

In arbitrary dimension, we consider a theory described by the most general quadratic curvature corrections of Einstein gravity together with a self-interacting nonminimally coupled scalar field. This theory is shown to admit five different families of Lifshitz black holes dressed with a nontrivial scalar field. The entropy of these configurations is microscopically computed by means of a higher-dimensional anisotropic Cardy-like formula where the role of the ground state is played by the soliton obtained through a double analytic continuation. This involves to calculate the correct expressions for the masses of the higher-dimensional Lifshitz black hole as well as their corresponding soliton. The robustness of this Cardy-like formula is checked by showing that the microscopic entropy is in perfect agreement with the gravitational Wald entropy. Consequently, the calculated global charges are compatible with the first law of thermodynamics. 48. Beliefs and Actions of Superintendents Related to the Development of Cultural Responsiveness in Principals to Support the Needs of English Language Learners

Abstract

As the population of ELLs continues to increase, so do the mandates to address the achievement gap of this diverse population. While there is a consensus on the importance of improving the academic achievement of ELLs (Elfers & Stritikus, 2014; Russell, 2018; Sua´rez-Orozco et al., 2008) and there is growing research reinforcing the needs for supporting teachers of ELLs (Elfers & Stritikus, 2014; Hopkins et al., 2019; Russell, 2018), there is limited research available regarding the leadership actions of superintendents that support building principals in meeting the diverse, cultural, and linguistic instructional needs of ELLs. This qualitative, comparative case study explored the beliefs and actions of superintendents in supporting principals in their development of cultural responsiveness to support the needs of ELLs. The participants in the study were the superintendent, building and district leaders from the three public school districts with an ELL population equal to or greater than the 9% state average (NYSED, 2021a) in the Hudson Valley Region of New York State. This research was explored through the lens of the four principles of the "Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE) Framework" (NYSED, 2018). The findings that resulted from this study suggested the districts in this study had evidence of implementing some culturally responsive leadership practices related to ELLs as it applied to each of the four principles of the "CR-SE Framework" (NYSED, 2018). However, there were pockets of the recommendations provided in the "CR-SE Framework" with inconsistent application of the four principles in the three sites. The need to provide professional learning, human, and fiscal support to building leaders in order to cultivate responsive leadership practices to meet the needs of ELLs in their schools is clear. Finally, there is a need for a systemic approach that includes creating and monitoring subgroup-specific achievement target goals.
