We present a first-principles analytic treatment of modern multi-vane occulters in circular (coronagraph) and linear (heliospheric imager) geometry, develop a simplified theory that is useful for designing and predicting their performance, explain certain visual artifacts, and explore the performance limits of multi-vane occulters. Multi-vane occulters are challenging to design in part because they violate the conditions for both the Fraunhofer and Fresnel approximations to diffraction theory, and new designs have therefore generally required explicit simulation, empirical measurement, "guesstimation", or all three. Starting from the Kirchoff diffraction integral, we develop a "sequential plane wave" approximate analytic theory that is suitable for predicting performance of multi-vane occulters, and use it to derive closed-form expressions for the performance of new designs. We review the fundamental 2-D system of an occulter edge, discuss how it applies to real 3-D systems by extrusion or revolution, present the reason for observed bright quasi-achromatic fringing around coronagraph occulters, develop the sequential plane wave approximation in 2-D and explore its limits, describe the relevance of the 2-D theory to practical 3-D instruments, and discuss implications for multi-vane occulter design in current and future instruments., Comment: 20 pp., 9 figures, 59 equations. Many recent studies have pointed out significant discrepancies between observations and models of stellar populations in the near-infrared (NIR). With current and future observing facilities being focused in this wavelength range, properly assessing and solving these issues is of utmost importance. Here, we present the first application of the extragalactic globular cluster (GC) near-infrared spectroscopy survey, and present evidence that these GCs reveal an age zero-point problem of stellar population synthesis (SPS) models. This problem has already been identified in the optical range for the GCs of the Milky Way. Such an issue arises when derived GC spectroscopic ages appear older than the Universe itself. We extend this discussion for the first time to the NIR, specifically using the Pa$_{\rm\beta}$ line at 1.28~microns. We focus on the GCs of the nearby Centaurus~A galaxy using their NIR spectra. One way to constrain the evolutionary histories of galaxies is to analyse their stellar populations. In the local Universe, our understanding of the stellar population properties of galaxies has traditionally relied on the study of optical absorption and emission-line features. In order to overcome limitations intrinsic to this wavelength range, such as the age-metallicity degeneracy and the high sensitivity to dust reddening, we must use wavelength ranges beyond the optical. The near-infrared (NIR) offers a possibility to extract information on spectral signatures that are not as obvious in traditional optical bands. Moreover, with the current and forthcoming generation of instrumentation focusing on the NIR, it is mandatory to explore possibilities within this wavelength range for nearby-Universe galaxies. However, although the NIR shows great potential, we are only beginning to understand it. Widely used techniques such as a full spectral fitting and line strength indices need to be tested on systems that are as close to simple stellar populations as possible, and the result from the techniques need to be compared to the yields from a traditional optical analysis. We present a NIR spectral survey of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). The set was composed of 21 GCs from NGC5128 that were obtained with SOAR/TripleSpec4, which covered the ~1.0-2.4$\mu$m range with a spectral resolution R=$\lambda/\Delta\lambda$ of 3500. These spectra cover H$\beta$ equivalent widths between 0.98$\r{A}$ and 4.32$\r{A}$, and [MgFe]' between 0.24$\r{A}$ and 3.76$\r{A}$. This set is ideal for performing absorption band measurements and a full spectral fitting, and it can be used for kinematic studies and age and abundance measurements. With this library, we expect to be able to probe the capabilities of NIR models, as well as to further improve stellar population estimates for the GCs around NGC5128., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Understanding faint dwarf galaxies is fundamental to the development of a robust theory of galaxy formation on small scales. Since the discovery of a population of ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) rich in globular clusters (GCs) in Coma, an increasing number of studies on low surface brightness dwarf galaxies (LSBds) have been published in recent years. The most massive LSBds have been observed predominantly in groups and clusters, with properties displaying dependence on the environment. In this work, we use deep DECam imaging to systematically identify LSBds and their GC populations around the low-density environment of NGC 3115. We carefully analyse the structure and morphology of 24 candidates, 18 of which are reported for the first time. Most candidates exhibit red colours suggesting a connection between their colour and distance to NGC 3115. We followed up with Gemini GMOS imaging 9 LSBds to properly identify their GC populations. We derive lower limits for the number of GCs associated with each galaxy. Our analysis reveals that they occur around of the same loci of Fornax LSB dwarf GC systems. The relationship between the number of GCs and total mass provides a tool in which, by counting the GCs in these galaxies, we estimate an upper limit for the total mass of these LSB dwarfs, obtaining the mean value of $\sim 3.3\times10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. An undirected graph is said to be cordial if there is a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the vertices that induces a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the edges. An undirected graph $G$ is said to be $(2,3)$-orientable if there exists a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the vertices of $G$ such that about one third of the edges are incident to vertices labeled the same. That is, there is some digraph that is an orientation of $G$ that is $(2,3)$-cordial. Examples of the smallest noncordial/non-$(2,3)$-orientable graphs are given and upper bounds on the possible number of edges in a cordial/$(2,3)$-orientable graph are presented. It is also shown that if $T$ is a linear operator on the set of all undirected graphs on $n$ vertices that strongly preserves the set of cordial graphs or the set of $(2,3)$-orientable graphs then $T$ is a vertex permutation.., Comment: 11 pages

NRAO and SpaceX have been engaged in coordinated testing efforts since Fall 2021, including conducting experiments on different interference avoidance schemes for the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) inside the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) in West Virginia. The Starlink system is capable of avoiding direct illumination of telescope sites with their adaptive tasking to place downlink beams far away. Nevertheless, even satellites operating in this mode can potentially present strong signals into the telescope's receiver system if they pass close to the telescope's main beam at the boresight. For additional protection, Starlink satellites can either momentarily redirect or completely disable their downlink channels while they pass within some minimum angular separation threshold from the telescope's boresight, methods that are referred to as "telescope boresight avoidance". In two separate experiments conducted since Fall 2023, NRAO and SpaceX arranged to have the GBT observe a fixed RA/Dec position in the sky, chosen to have a large number of close-to-boresight Starlink passages. Preliminary analysis from these two experiments illustrate the feasibility of these avoidance methods to significantly reduce, if not eliminate, the negative impact of close-to-boresight satellite passages. Importantly, these experiments demonstrate the value of continuing cooperative efforts between NRAO and SpaceX, and expanding cooperation between the radio astronomy and satellite communities more generally., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication by Astrophysical Journal Letters (31 Jul 2024)

We present the design of a portable coronagraph, CATEcor, that incorporates a novel "shaded truss" style of external occultation and serves as a proof-of-concept for that family of coronagraphs. The shaded truss design style has the potential for broad application in various scientific settings. We conceived CATEcor itself as a simple instrument to observe the corona during the darker skies available during a partial solar eclipse, or for students or interested amateurs to detect the corona under ideal non-eclipsed conditions. CATEcor is therefore optimized for simplicity and accessibility to the public. It is implemented using an existing dioptric telescope and an adapter rig that mounts in front of the objective lens, restricting the telescope aperture and providing external occultation. The adapter rig, including occulter, is fabricated using fusion deposition modeling (FDM; colloquially "3D printing"), greatly reducing cost. The structure is designed to be integrated with moderate care and may be replicated in a university or amateur setting. While CATEcor is a simple demonstration unit, the design concept, process, and trades are useful for other more sophisticated coronagraphs in the same general family, which might operate under normal daytime skies outside the annular-eclipse conditions used for CATEcor., Comment: 27pp; 12 figures; accepted to Solar Physics

In this paper we apply second-order stochastic dominance (SSD) to the problem of enhanced indexation with asset subset (sector) constraints. The problem we consider is how to construct a portfolio that is designed to outperform a given market index whilst having regard to the proportion of the portfolio invested in distinct market sectors. In our approach, subset SSD, the portfolio associated with each sector is treated in a SSD manner. In other words in subset SSD we actively try to find sector portfolios that SSD dominate their respective sector indices. However the proportion of the overall portfolio invested in each sector is not pre-specified, rather it is decided via optimisation. Our subset SSD approach involves the numeric solution of a multivariate second-order stochastic dominance problem. Computational results are given for our approach as applied to the S&P500 over the period 3rd October 2018 to 29th December 2023. This period, over 5 years, includes the Covid pandemic, which had a significant effect on stock prices. The S&P500 data that we have used is made publicly available for the benefit of future researchers. Our computational results indicate that the scaled version of our subset SSD approach outperforms the S&P500. Our approach also outperforms the standard SSD based approach to the problem. Our results show, that for the S&P500 data considered, including sector constraints improves out-of-sample performance, irrespective of the SSD approach adopted. Results are also given for Fama-French data involving 49 industry portfolios and these confirm the effectiveness of our subset SSD approach.

The goal of this work is to scrutinise the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) calculation methodology. We analysed the SBF derivation procedure, measured the accuracy of the fitted SBF under controlled conditions, retrieved the uncertainty associated with the variability of a system that is inherently stochastic, and studied the SBF reliability under a wide range of conditions. Additionally, we address the possibility of an SBF gradient detection. We also examine the problems related with biased measurements of the SBF and low luminosity sources. All of this information allows us to put forward guidelines to ensure a valid SBF retrieval. To perform all these experiments, we carried out Monte Carlo simulations of mock galaxies as an ideal laboratory. Knowing its underlying properties, we attempted to retrieve SBFs under different conditions. We show how the SBF uncertainty can be obtained and we present a collection of qualitative recommendations for a safe SBF retrieval: it is important to model the instrumental noise, rather than fitting it; the target galaxies must be observed under appropriate observational conditions; in a traditional SBF derivation, one should avoid pixels with fluxes lower than ten times the SBF estimate to prevent biased results. We offer our computational implementation in the form of a simple code designed to estimate the uncertainty of the SBF measurement. The chemical composition of globular clusters (GCs) across the Local Group provides information on chemical abundance trends. The host galaxy, Sextans A, is a low-surface-brightness dwarf irregular galaxy located on the edge of the Local Group.We derive the dynamical mass of the GC together with the mass-to-light ratio and the abundances of the ${\alpha}$ (Mg, Ca, Ti, Si), Fe-peak (Fe, Cr, Mn, Sc, Ni), and heavy elements (Ba, Cu, Zn, Eu). Abundance ratios were determined from the analysis of an optical integrated-light spectrum of Sextans A GC-1, obtained with UVES on the VLT. We apply non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) corrections to Mg, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni. The GC appears to be younger and more metal-poor than the majority of the GCs of the Milky Way, with an age of 8.6$\pm$2.7 Gyr and $\text{[Fe/H]}=-2.14\pm0.04$ dex. The calculated dynamical mass is $(5.18 \pm1.62) \times 10^5 M_{\odot}$, which results in an atypically high value of the mass-to-light ratio, 4.35$\pm$1.40 M$_{\odot}$/L$_{V \odot}$. Sextans A GC-1 has varying $\alpha$ elements - the Mg abundance is extremely low ($\text{[Mg/Fe]}=-0.79\pm0.29$), Ca and Ti are solar-scaled or mildly enhanced, and Si is enhanced. This makes the mean $\alpha$ abundance (excluding Mg) to be enhanced. The Fe-peak elements are consistent with scaled-solar or slightly enhanced abundances. Ba and Cu have sub-solar abundance ratios, while Zn and Eu are consistent with their upper limits being solar-scaled and enhanced. The composition of Sextans A GC-1 resembles the overall pattern and behaviour of GCs in the Local Group. The anomalous values are the mass-to-light ratio and the depleted abundance of Mg. There is no definite explanation for such an extreme abundance value. Variations in the initial mass function or the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole might explain the high mass-to-light ratio value., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

The kinematics and chemical composition of stellar populations of different ages provide crucial information about the evolution of a galaxy. We aim to provide such information for IC 1613, an isolated, gas-rich, star-forming dwarf galaxy in the Local Group. We present here the results of a new spectroscopic study performed with MUSE, an integral-field spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. We extracted from the data cubes more than 2000 sources from which we separated stellar objects for further spectroscopic analysis. The quality of the data set allowed us to obtain accurate classifications and line-of-sight velocities for about 800 stars. Our sample includes not only Red Giant Branch (RGB) and Main Sequence (MS) stars, but also a number of probable Be and C stars. We also obtained reliable metallicities for about 300 RGB stars. The kinematic analysis revealed for the first time the presence of stellar rotation with high significance. We found general agreement with the rotation velocity of the neutral gas component. Examining the kinematics of stars as a function of broad age ranges, we find that the velocity dispersion increases as a function of age, with the behaviour being very clear in the outermost pointings, while the rotation-to-velocity dispersion support decreases. On timescales shorter than a Gyr, the stellar kinematics still follow very closely that of the neutral gas, while the two components decouple on longer timescales. The chemical analysis of the RGB stars revealed average properties comparable to other Local Group dwarf galaxies. We also provide a new estimation of the inclination angle using only independent stellar tracers. Our work provides the largest spectroscopic sample of an isolated LG dwarf galaxy. The results obtained seem to support the scenario in which the stars of a dwarf galaxy are born from a less turbulent gas over time., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Accurate distances are key to obtaining intrinsic properties of astronomical objects such as luminosity or size. Globular clusters (GCs) follow a well-defined relation between their absolute magnitudes and internal stellar velocity dispersions ($\sigma$), offering an independent way to measure distances to their host galaxies via high-resolution spectroscopy. This is reminiscent of the "Faber-Jackson" for elliptical galaxies. However, unlike galaxies, GCs have a very narrow range of mass-to-light ratios and simple star formation histories. Here we show that the GC $M_V - \text{log}_{10}(\sigma)$ relation is linear, whose slope is identical for the Milky Way and M31 GC systems. Based on this, we use 94 Milky Way GCs which have distances from Gaia parallaxes, or proper-motion dispersion profiles to derive a "GC velocity dispersion" distance (GCVD) to M31, obtaining $(m-M)_0=24.51\pm0.08$ ($d=798\pm28$ kpc), in excellent agreement with independent measurements. Combining data for these two galaxies to create a fiducial relation using 296 GCs with high-quality measurements, we obtain a zeropoint uncertainty ($\pm 0.06$ mag) corresponding to a distance uncertainty of $\sim3\%$. We then use GCVD to obtain a distance to the giant elliptical galaxy NGC\,5128 (Centaurus A), finding $(m-M)_0= 27.95\pm0.09$ ($d=3.89\pm0.16$ Mpc). This is in excellent agreement with, and in some cases more precise than, literature estimates from the tip of the red giant branch or surface brightness fluctuations. We apply GCVD to Local Group galaxies with appropriate data and find good agreement with literature values even in cases with only one GC velocity dispersion measurement., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS
