Industrial development within Canada's boreal zone has increased in recent decades. Forest management activities, pulp and paper operations, electric power generation, mining, conventional oil and gas extraction, nonconventional oil sand development, and peat mining occur throughout the boreal zone with varying impacts on water resources. We review impacts of these industries on surface water, groundwater, and wetlands recognizing that heterogeneity in the dominance of different hydrologic processes (i.e., precipitation, evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge, and runoff generation) across the boreal zone influences the degree of impacts on water resources. Through the application of best management practices, forest certification programs, and science-based guidelines, timber, pulp and paper, and peat industries have reduced their impacts on water resources, although uncertainties remain about long-term recovery following disturbance. Hydroelectric power developments have moved toward reducing reservoir size and creating more natural flow regimes, although impacts of aging infrastructure and dam decommissioning is largely unknown. Mineral and metal mining industries have improved regulation and practices, but the legacy of abandoned mines across the boreal zone still presents an ongoing risk to water resources. Oil and gas industries, including non-conventional resources such as oil sands, is one of the largest industrial users of water and, while significant progress has been made in reducing water use, more work is needed to ensure the protection of water resources. All industries contribute to atmospheric deposition of pollutants that may eventually be released to downstream waters. Although most industrial sectors strive to improve their environmental performance with regards to water resources, disruptions to natural flow regimes and risks of degraded water quality exist at local to regional scales in the boreal zone. Addressing the emerging challenge of managing the expanding, intensifying, and cumulative effects of industries in conjunction with other stressors, such as climate change and atmospheric pollution, across the landscape will aid in preserving Canada's rich endowment of water resources. Conservation efforts to sustain water resources and aquatic biodiversity in boreal watersheds will require reliable information on the recent status of various indicator species and an improved understanding of the risks to aquatic biodiversity posed by resource development activities. We reviewed the recent state of knowledge on the responses of aquatic biodiversity to forest management, pulp and paper mill effluents, hydroelectric impoundments, mining of minerals and metals, oil sands extractions, and peat mining and offer a prognosis for aquatic biodiversity under each of these environmental stressors. Despite the prevalence of natural resource development in Canada's largest forest ecosystem, there was a limited amount of published literature on the effects of many of the disturbance types on various indicators of aquatic biodiversity, making it difficult to produce a current and reliable status assessment. Across most of the boreal zone, there is a lack of coordinated, consistent data collection for many of the bioindicators and disturbance types discussed in this review. Forecasting the future state of aquatic biodiversity across the boreal zone is challenged by increasing natural resource development and its interactions with other stressors, especially climate change. The cumulative effects of multiple stressors coupled with resource development activities in boreal watersheds remain largely unknown. More importantly, the ecological thresholds for these cumulative effects (that is, the point at which aquatic ecosystems and their biodiversity cannot recover to a desired state within a reasonable time frame) are also unknown and remain gaps in our knowledge. The recent literature identifies a number of risks to aquatic biodiversity at local (tens of square kilometres) to regional (hundreds of square kilometres) scales associated with natural resource development. There are indications that many of these risks can be minimized by 'greener' technologies for resource development and reclamation, practical conservation planning and regulation, and increased stewardship in watershed management, although the effectiveness of many of these measures cannot yet be assessed from the published literature. The transport and metabolism of gibberellins (GAs) ([³H]-GA1 and [³H]-GA5) of high specific radioactivity were investigated in excised segments from young internodes of Phaseolus coccineus L. Both GA1 and GA5, are native to this species and present in shoot tissue. The segments, 5.1 mm long, were incubated for 6h in the horizontal position with agar donor blocks containing the [³H]-GA on the morphological apical or basal ends and with plain agar receiver blocks on the opposite end. At the end of incubation, the individual agar blocks were analyzed immediately for total radioactivity, or both blocks and intervening tissue were frozen and freeze-dried for later chromatographic analysis. The movement of both [³H]-GA1 and [³H]-GA5 was found to be consistently without polarity. However, approximately 5-fold more [³H]-GA1 than [³H]-GA5 was transported through the Phaseolus segments into receivers when equal amounts were in the donors. The extractable radioactivity from receiver blocks was primarily that of the donor GA. No putative GA conjugates were found in any class of receivers, but more GA metabolites were found in the free acid fraction from acropetal than basipetal receivers. Chromatographic analysis by reversed phase C18 high performance liquid chromatography of the tissue segments showed that [³H]-GA1 was metabolized more than [³H]-GA5. Tissue adjacent to receiver blocks contained not only the precursor GA from the donor, but also polar 'free GA metabolites' and putative GA glucosyl conjugates. These results provide evidence that GA1, which is the known 'effector' GA for elongation in shoot tissue of several species, is more effectively transported than (GA5 (a known precursor of GA1) or than (GA1's more polar metabolites.

Demand for woody biomass fuels is increasing amidst concerns about global energy security and climate change, but there may be negative implications of increased harvesting for forest ecosystem functions and their benefits to society (ecosystem services). Using new methods for assessing ecosystem services based on long-term experimental research, post-harvest changes in ten potential benefits were assessed for ten first-order northern hardwood forest watersheds at three long-term experimental research sites in northeastern North America. As expected, we observed near-term tradeoffs between biomass provision and greenhouse gas regulation, as well as tradeoffs between intensive harvest and the capacity of the forest to remediate nutrient pollution. In both cases, service provision began to recover along with the regeneration of forest vegetation; in the case of pollution remediation, the service recovered to pre-harvest levels within 10 years. By contrast to these two services, biomass harvesting had relatively nominal and transient impacts on other ecosystem services. Our results are sensitive to empirical definitions of societal demand, including methods for scaling societal demand to ecosystem units, which are often poorly resolved. Reducing uncertainty around these parameters can improve confidence in our results and increase their relevance for decision-making. Topographic positional regulation of nitrogen (N) dynamics in soil within Canadian Shield headwaters, located in calibrated catchments containing mature, tolerant hardwood forest, was examined to determine how N pools, mineralization, nitrification, and leaching in soil relate to N export in drainage waters. A uniformly high net N mineralization and nitrification potential for surficial soil layers rich in organic N was demonstrated for ridge, upper-middle slope, and lower slope – footslope topographic positions. Results from plot-scale studies revealed that NO3– concentrations in soil water from well-drained soils were very highly variable throughout the catchments, ranging from 25 to 175 µmol·L–1, with a median of 80 µmol·L–1. The isotopic effects of denitrification were not detected in soil water collected from lower slope – footslopes, and in situ rates of N2O production from soils on lower slope – footslopes and valley bottoms were very low and highly variable. Higher N exports from soils than from streams were not explained by differences in soil water N with topographic position or denitrification in lower landscape topographic positions. Using an average soil water N value, based on the replicated plots within catchments, did not reduce the calculated substantial differences in N export between soils and streams. Using Avena sativa L. cv. Victory oat seedlings and excised p‐1 stem segments (including the p‐1 and p‐2 internodes) the effect of exogenously supplied ethylene and the removal of ethylene on internodal extension and gravitropic bending was assessed. Similarly, the ability of the excised system to respond to gravistimulation was assessed in the presence of inhibitors of ethylene action (AgNO3) and ethylene synthesis (3,5‐diiodo‐4‐hydroxybenzoic acid and benzyl isothiocyanate; BITC). The production of ethylene from both intact and excised systems was also measured from 0 to 48 h after gravistimulation, relative to vertical controls. Although gravitropic curvature is initiated, and indeed enters the most rapid phase of upward bending during the first 6 h, there is no difference in ethylene production between vertical and geostimulated plants during this period. The ethylene production of gravistimulated plants rises sharply to a maximum at 24 h, then decreases steeply to almost the control level by 48 h, at which time the rate of upward curvature is diminishing. Neither the addition nor removal of ethylene, nor the addition of inhibitors affecting ethylene‐action (AgNO3) or synthesis (DIHB) influence gravitropic bending or internodal extension in excised segments. Although the ethylene synthesis inhibitor BITC showed down the rate of upward bending, this effect could not be reversed by addition of ethylene. We conclude that the burst in ethylene production that develops in leaf‐sheath bases (pulvini) after they have started to curve upwards is not primary to the induction of curvature. We further suggest that ethylene has no major effect or role in the induction of upward bending after gravistimulation. The metabolism of high specific activity gibberellin A1 ([3H]‐GA1) in the excised system was assessed during 1, 2 and 4 h of gravistimulation. Changes in endogenous GAs and GA metabolism have been shown previously to be correlated (at the later stages) with gravistimulated bending in intact Avena shoots. The excised segments ‘leaked’ free [3H]‐GAs and [3H]‐GA glucosyl conjugate‐like substances into the bathing medium, and this was a confounding factor. Nevertheless, gravistimulated stem segments, and especially the bottom half of the segment, were significantly less leaky then vertical segments. Thus, just 1 h after gravistimulation, bottom segment halves retained 22% more precursor [3H]‐GA1, 36% more free [3H]‐GA‐like metabolites, and 48% more [3H]‐GA glucosyl conjugate‐like metabolites than vertical segments. In contrast, the 1 h gravistimulated top halves retained slightly less (1–4%) precursor [3H]‐GA and free [3H]‐GA metabolites, but 21% more [3H]‐GA glucosyl conjugate‐like radioactivity than vertical segments.
