2. Understanding Climate Trends in Central America through Practical Problem-Based Learning

Abstract

In our current period of escalating climate change, we urgently need to better understand the modern climate and climate drivers in understudied regions of the world. This article provides a succinct and current literature review of one such region: the Maya Lowlands. The region has a long history of study on human--climatic interaction but little regarding modern climate research. To spur the study and understanding of climate in this region, we present an applied exercise of climate drivers and data. First, the article will provide an update on the current knowledge of the modern climate drivers in the Maya Lowland regions. To provide breadth in the studies, we base our review on different climate time-scale variabilities. Second, we present results from a pilot exercise on applied climate trends exercised at an institute of higher education. Through practical problem-based learning, students investigate climate trends using climate data for the Maya Lowlands, and gain an insight into data management. The feedback gathered from the exercise helped formulate a revised edition to be used by instructors. Follow-up discussion questions and steps required to conduct the exercise are included. Through interdisciplinary techniques, the exercise aims for students to analyse critically the changing climate.

Abstract

Students will use simple watershed models to measure runoff from natural and urbanized areas. They will graph the data to create and compare the hydrographs of these two different types of watersheds. Students will also map different areas in their neighborhood, calculate the amount of impervious surface in the area, and determine how this affects the volume of stormwater runoff expected from a typical rainstorm. Finally, students will list different types of pollutants that enter the streams from urban areas and learn about possible impacts to the stream. They will also learn about possible methods of reducing these impacts through community or individual actions.

19. An interactive grid generation technique for turbomachinery

Abstract

A combination algebraic/elliptic technique is presented for the generation of 3-D grids about turbomachinery blade rows for both axial and radial flow machinery. The technique is build around use of an advanced engineering workstation to construct several 2-D grids interactively on predetermined blade-to-blade surfaces. A 3-D grid is generated by interpolating these surface grids onto an axisymmetric grid. On each blade to blade surface, a grid is created using algebraic techniques near the blade to control orthogonality within the boundary layer region and elliptic techniques in the mid-passage to achieve smoothness. The interactive definition of bezier curves as internal boundaries is the key to simple construction. The approach is adapted for use with the average passage solution technique, although this is not a limitation for most other uses. A variety of examples are presented.

This work outlines a procedure for simulating the flow field within multistage turbomachinery which includes the effects of unsteadiness, compressibility, and viscosity. The associated modeling equations are the average passage equation system which governs the time-averaged flow field within a typical passage of a blade row embedded within a multistage configuration. The results from a simulation of a low aspect ratio stage and a one-half turbine will be presented and compared with experimental measurements. It will be shown that the secondary flow field generated by the rotor causes the aerodynamic performance of the downstream vane to be significantly different from that of an isolated blade row.

Abstract

A 3-D model was developed for simulating multistage turbomachinery flows using supercomputers. This average passage flow model described the time averaged flow field within a typical passage of a bladed wheel within a multistage configuration. To date, a number of inviscid simulations were executed to assess the resolution capabilities of the model. Recently, the viscous terms associated with the average passage model were incorporated into the inviscid computer code along with an algebraic turbulence model. A simulation of a stage-and-one-half, low speed turbine was executed. The results of this simulation, including a comparison with experimental data, is discussed.

Abstract

This article views that one of the less-appreciated constants of world history has been soil erosion because its effects can be unnoticed before crop productivity wanes. Soil erosion causes damage in two main places: where the removal occurs and where the sediment deposits. Where the erosion occurs, it removes particles, organic matter, and important nutrients since many dissolve into water. Thus the problems of on-site soil erosion are the physical loss of the medium of plant growth, nutrient depletion, and either land abandonment or the cost of conservation and reclamation. Severe erosion has removed as much or more than 50 meters of soil and sediment from surfaces, creating canyons where cornfields existed a few decades before. One can view the history of soil erosion as spanning several periods. It started long before human history as geological or "natural" erosion, which is generally a slow process, but given enough time it carved mile-deep and spectacular canyons. This soil erosion occurred in several temporal modes, but it was generally slow and steady over millions of years, though it could be episodically rapid and discontinuous. A second wave started with human-induced or human-accelerated erosion, when humans became technologically advanced enough to disrupt the surface vegetation through fire and the girdling of trees.
