Abstract

Esta obra está formada por los trabajos científicos pertenecientes al Proyecto de innovación “Inter-disciplinary Lectures. A Possitive Rebound for English Teaching”, La internacionalización en el mundo académico es un modo de transferir conocimiento enriqueciendo así las capacidades cognitivas y las competencias transversales de los alumnos. Esta fuente de conocimiento permite a los docentes compartir experiencias, aumentar los acuerdos de trabajo entre facultades y participar de otras visiones y modelos de aprendizaje. Este libro resume varias experiencias académicas internacionales entre facultades, empresas e instituciones de 6 países (Alemania, Francia, Japón, Portugal, España y EE. UU.) y 15 organizaciones. En total, 21 participantes (académicos, estudiantes y expertos) de diversas disciplinas. La obra presenta diversas narrativas sobre experiencias internacionales de profesores y estudiantes que a lo largo de los años han ido colaborando con la Universidad de Burgos en diferentes acciones y compromisos. Todo esto descubre la internacionalización como un modo de evaluación tácita y mejora continua de los modelos educativos universitarios., Proyecto de innovación“Inter-disciplinary Lectures. 29. Improving the Prediction of Project Success in the Telecom Sector by Means of Advanced Data Balancing.

Abstract

As governments access capital, technology, and managerial expertise from private investors, there is an increasing trend of privatizations in infrastructure projects worldwide. Given the large size of these investments, notably in the sector of telecommunications, investors typically create a consortium with other interested firms, an investment vehicle known as private participation project (PPP). Given the critical repercussions on the rest of the economy, and its large financial losses in case of failure, the prediction of the success of PPPs in telecommunications is of utmost importance. The success of PPPs can be predicted by Machine Learning and it is probed in this article. Hence, widely acknowledged classifiers (k-nearest neighbors [k-NNs], support vector machines [SVMs], and random forest [RF]) are applied to PPPs publicly available data from the World Bank. The results on this highly imbalanced dataset are greatly improved by the application of data balancing techniques. It includes some standard ones (random oversampling, random undersampling, and synthetic minority oversampling technique [SMOTE]), together with some other advanced ones (density-based SMOTE and borderline SMOTE). The satisfactory results validate the proposed application of classifiers on the dataset improved by data-balancing techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Transnational education is one of the many facets of inclusive education, with its relevance of English as the natural Lingua Franca in a vast range of contexts. The University of Catania, Italy, is an interesting case-study of a highly international University, which welcomes students from all over the world, and where transnational education has become an ordinary practice. In the light of my experience of English language teaching, I would like to report both on the cognitive value of an intercultural, learner-centered approach and on the various factors that concur to make mixed classes a motivating practice. Based on the hypothesis that people who speak different languages have different worldviews, my teaching proposal aims at fulfilling two objectives: understanding the perspectives of other cultures, and comparing the language and culture of others with students’ own.

Abstract

One primary mechanism through which leaders influence others in the context of organizational change is their rhetoric. While planning change communication, it is important for a change agent to craft the appropriate message content to foster employees' commitment to change. Furthermore, the literal meaning of a message can be strengthened by the way it is delivered. This study investigates the content of a change message and how it is articulated by the leader using a vignette-based experimental study. Based on a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, 200 participants are assigned to one of the eight hypothetical change scenarios that vary by change message content, message delivery, and change context. The results show the impact of rational versus emotional content and message content versus delivery on commitment differ based on secure or insecure contexts. This study provides cues for practitioners to design change messages to obtain commitment to change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
