Abstract

Objective: Following the COVID-19 outbreak, authorities recommended preventive measures to reduce infection rates. However, adherence to calls varied between individuals and across cultures. To determine the characteristics of effective health communication, we investigated three key features: message source, content, and audience. Methods: Using a pre-test and two experiments, we tested how message content (emphasizing personal or social benefit), audience (individual differences), message source (scientists or state officials), and their interaction influence adherence to preventive measures. Using fliers advocating preventive measures, Experiment 1 investigated the effects of message content and examined the moderator role of individual differences. Experiment 2 presented the messages using news articles and manipulated sources. Results: Study 1 found decreasing adherence over time, with no significant impact from message content or individual differences. Study 2 found messages emphasizing 'protect yourself' and 'protect your country' to increase intentions for adherence to preventive measures. It also revealed an interaction between message source and content whereby messages emphasizing personal benefit were more effective when they came from healthcare professionals than from state officials. However, message source and content did not affect vaccination intentions or donations for vaccine research. In the current preregistered research, we recruited 1088 Turkish participants and investigated (a) individual differences associated with COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs; (b) whether such conspiracy beliefs are related to the level of preventive measures; and (c) other individual differences that might be related to the preventive measures. Higher faith in intuition, uncertainty avoidance, impulsivity, generic conspiracy beliefs, religiosity, and right-wing ideology, and a lower level of cognitive reflection were associated with a higher level of belief in COVID-19 conspiracy theories. There was no association between COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and preventive measures while perceived risk was positively and impulsivity negatively correlated with preventive measures. We discuss the implications and directions for future research.

Abstract

In this study, the effects of two reflection manipulations will be studied on both generic and COVID-19-specific conspiracy beliefs. In four conditions, participants will be randomly assigned to debiasing training (Isler, Yılmaz & Doğruyol, 2020) or scrambled sentence task (Gervais & Norenzayan, 2012) compared to two control conditions. Debiasing training is expected to be more effective in reducing conspiracy beliefs than scrambled sentence task. Also, the effect of epistemic rationality will be tested as a potential moderator.

Abstract

Human behavior has been shaped by threats coming from the environment. Various theories have aimed to explain the effect of threat on human behavior with different predictions (e.g., Terror Management Theory; Greenberg et al., 1986, Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition Model; Jost et al., 2003, and Reactive Liberal Hypothesis; Nail et al., 2009). Previous tests of these predictions produced conflicting findings, and it is not clear which theoretical proposition provides the strongest empirical support. Eadeh and Chang’s (2020) Issue Ownership Model has the potential to reconcile the conflicting findings in the literature as it argues that environmental threats do not produce uniform human reactions, but instead elicit different responses depending on the type of threat. In the first part of this study, we will experimentally study the effect of an understudied type of threat, earthquake threat, on risk perceptions and prosocial behavior (generosity and cooperation) in a natural field context (i.e., the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquakes). In the second phase, for exploratory purposes, we will use moral messages to test whether they influence cooperative behavior. We will recontact and invite participants who participated in a pre-survey before the earthquake, and they will be randomly assigned to the threat saliency or the control conditions.

Abstract

We will study whether and how religious believers are consistently more prosocial than non-believers across incentivized economic games designed to measure various aspects of social and moral behavior. Previously, we collected the psychological profiles of a sample of US residents (e.g., self-reported conformism). In the current study, we will recruit the same participants and observe the following aspects of their behavior: charitable giving (using the donation task), norm-enforcement and moral courage (third-party punishment games), cooperation (prisoner’s dilemma game), trust and trustworthiness (trust game), and honesty (deception game). We will additionally measure participants’ conformism behavior (conformity task) to test rule-conformism and peer-conformism as the potential underlying mechanisms of differences in prosocial behavior between believers and non-believers.

Abstract

In this experiment, we will mainly test the interactive effects of the message content ("protect yourself", "protect your family", "protect your country," and "control”) and the source of the message (“politician” and “scientist”) on preventive measures (as measured by compliance with preventive measures scale and attitudes towards preventive behaviors) and vaccination behavior (as measured by an incentivized donation task to a charity working full-time on COVID-19 prevention, and behavioral intention to getting vaccinated against COVID-19 scale). We will also explore whether several factors such as risk perception, SES, ideology, religiosity, belief in COVID-19 conspiracy theories, and trust in message source moderate the effects of the content and the source of the message on preventive measures and vaccination behavior.

Abstract

Terror Management Theory (TMT; Pyszczynski, Greenberg, Solomon, Arndt, & Schimel, 2004) claims that threat leads people to defend their own worldview. Accordingly, a threat manipulation should make liberals more liberal and conservatives more conservative, resulting in increased ideological polarization. An alternative account (Motivated Social Cognition; MSC, Jost et al., 2003) argues that different ideologies can serve different purposes. For example, MSC argues that conservatism promotes perception of reality as stable and secure. Accordingly, threat manipulation should lead to an overall conservative shift for both liberals and conservatives. A similar but different account (Reactive Liberal Hypothesis, RLH, Nail et al., 2009) suggests that conservatives, because they chronically perceive threat, are more resistant to threat manipulations. Hence, RLH predicts that the conservative shift will be stronger in liberals than conservatives. We aim to test these three conflicting accounts. We will employ a 2 (group membership: liberal vs. conservative) by 2 (prime manipulation: COVID-19 vs. control) between-subjects design on conservatism.

Abstract

Research on moral reasoning is centered around moral dilemmas in which deontological perspectives (emphasizing individual rights) are in conflict with consequentialist reasoning (also referred to as utilitarian; following the greater good). A central finding of this field is that people in certain situations are more likely do go with deontological considerations, while in other cases they are more likely to decide based on consequentialist reasons. In their seminal article, Greene et al. (2009) tried to investigate the effect of situational and psychological factors (e.g., intent of the agent, or physical contact between the agent and victim) on people’s moral decisions, but their work could not explore the effect of a potentially important component: culture. Therefore, the goal of the present research proposal is to empirically test the universality of utilitarian and deontological responding by directly replicating Greene et al.’s experiments on non-WEIRD samples as well as to explore the influence of culture and economic status on moral reasoning.

In the current experiment, we will investigate whether Identity Leadership dimensions (Steffens et al., 2014) protect leadership in case of leader violates morality on care foundation or fairness foundation by targeting the ingroup or outgroup. We will introduce participants to their group leader who meets one of four Identity Leadership dimensions (prototypicality, advancement, entrepreneurship, and impresarioship) that make their leader successful and violate morality on care or fairness by targeting ingroup or outgroup. We will ask participants to reduce the leadership score of their leader, considering both meeting identity leadership dimension and violating moral foundation.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effect of different emphases in the content of messages calling for compliance with preventive measures against COVID-19. For this purpose, we will present five different types of messages to the participants and examine possible differences in their self-reported compliance with preventive measures. The message types will vary in terms of emphasis as follows: protect yourself, your family, your country, your family and country, and control condition. Prior to this study, we conducted a pilot study, where we determined the individual differences such as personality, demographic, and intentions to comply with preventive measures. In the current study, we will recruit the same participants from this pilot study. In addition, we will analyze the possible moderator effects of various individual difference variables, which were measured in the pilot study (e.g., belief in COVID-19 related and general conspiracy theories, uncertainty avoidance, perceived risk, intuitive thinking, impulsivity, and demographics). Aims of the study: 1) We will test which type of messages (individual, family, country, both family and country) are more effective in compliance with preventive measures than the control condition. 2) Are there any individual difference variables moderating the effect of the messages on the intention to comply with preventive measures?
