1. $^{171}$Yb$^+$ optical clock with $2.2\times 10^{-18}$ systematic uncertainty and absolute frequency measurements

Abstract

A full evaluation of the uncertainty budget for the ytterbium ion optical clock at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) was performed on the electric octupole (E3) $^2\mathrm{S}_{1/2}\,\rightarrow\, ^2\mathrm{F}_{7/2}$ transition. The total systematic frequency shift was measured with a fractional standard systematic uncertainty of $2.2\times 10^{-18}$. Furthermore, the absolute frequency of the E3 transition of the $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion was measured between 2019 and 2023 via a link to International Atomic Time (TAI) and against the local caesium fountain NPL-CsF2. The absolute frequencies were measured with fractional standard uncertainties between $3.7 \times 10^{-16}$ and $1.1 \times 10^{-15}$, and all were in agreement with the 2021 BIPM recommended frequency., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Metrologia

Abstract

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. Abstract

We present a new framework to study the time variation of fundamental constants in a model-independent way. Model independence implies more free parameters than assumed in previous studies. Using data from atomic clocks based on $^{87}$Sr, $^{171}$Yb$^+$ and $^{133}$Cs, we set bounds on parameters controlling the variation of the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$, and the electron-to-proton mass ratio, $\mu$. We consider variations on timescales ranging from a minute to almost a day. In addition, we use our results to derive some of the tightest limits to date on the parameter space of models of ultralight dark matter and axion-like particles.

Abstract

We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. 5. A strontium optical lattice clock with $1 \times 10^{-17}$ uncertainty and measurement of its absolute frequency

Abstract

We present a measurement of the absolute frequency of the 5s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$ to 5s5p $^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{87}$Sr, which is a secondary representation of the SI second. We describe the optical lattice clock apparatus used for the measurement, and we focus in detail on how its systematic frequency shifts are evaluated with a total fractional uncertainty of $1 \times 10^{-17}$. Traceability to the International System of Units is provided via comparison to International Atomic Time (TAI). Gathering data over 5- and 15-day periods, with the lattice clock operating on average 74$\%$ of the time, we measure the frequency of the transition to be 429228004229873.1(5) Hz, which corresponds to a fractional uncertainty of $1 \times 10^{-15}$. We describe in detail how this uncertainty arises from the intermediate steps linking the optical frequency standard, through our local time scale UTC(NPL), to an ensemble of primary and secondary frequency standards which steer TAI. The calculated absolute frequency of the transition is in good agreement with recent measurements carried out in other laboratories around the world.

7. Frequency metrology at the 10⁻¹⁸ level with an ytterbium ion optical clock

Abstract

Atomic clocks, the most accurate instruments in existence, are reaching new levels of precision. These devices now find novel uses-from the exploration of relativity [1] to the detection of dark matter [2, 3]-all from same principle: measurement of the frequency of the light that excites a reference atomic transition. The 2S1/2 (F 0) → 2F7/2 (F 3) electric octupole (E3) transition in 171Yb+, with its Δν ≈ 1 nHz [4] linewidth and low sensitivity to external electromagnetic fields, lends itself to this usage [5]. We probe this transition in a single 171Yb+ ion held in a newly-designed endcap RF trap [6]. This design achieves a low temperature rise of 0.14(14)K. Excess micromotion in the trap is automatically compensated, resulting in a fractional frequency uncertainty of the combined RF-Stark and 2nd order Doppler shifts of 3.6 × 10−19. Anomalous phonon heating rates in the radial plane were measured as (−4.9 ± 5.2) s−1 and (−1.3 ± 3.6) s−1 for secular frequencies of 446 kHz and 470 kHz. The ion's differential polarisability at λ = 7 μm has been measured, suggesting a reduction in the BBR-related systematic error of the electric quadrupole (E2) transition by a factor of 5 and confirming the results of a previous measurement for the E3, performed using a different method [7]. However, a limitation prevented full confidence in our uncertainty levels. To pre-stabilize the frequency of our laser a 28 cm long, ultra-stable Fabry-Pérot cavity was constructed and used to drive the E3 atomic resonance with a linewidth of 1.64(2) Hz. Its finesse was measured as 458 000 and, in an atomic lock, a clock stability of 1.9 × 10−15 (τ/1 s)−1/2 was observed. The laser's frequency was measured and its stability transferred to other wavelengths via a femtosecond optical frequency comb. An international clock comparison campaign was carried out via satellite-mediated microwave links: the first of its scale, involving 4 National Measurement Institutes (NMIs) and 5 optical atomic clocks. A new technique was developed to analyse the resulting data and to characterize its uncertainty. The lowest fractional uncertainty in the comparison between any pair of clocks was 2.8 × 10−16. Finally, an absolute measurement of the E3 transition has been carried out through a link to International Atomic Time (TAI), without a local primary standard. The transition frequency was measured to be 642 121 496 772 645.17(22) Hz: the best measurement of this transition to date [8, 9].

Abstract

The highly forbidden $^2$S$_{1/2} \rightarrow ^2$F$_{7/2}$ electric octupole transition in $^{171}$Yb$^+$ is a potential candidate for a redefinition of the SI second. We present a measurement of the absolute frequency of this optical transition, performed using a frequency link to International Atomic Time to provide traceability to the SI second. The $^{171}$Yb$^+$ optical frequency standard was operated for 76% of a 25-day period, with the absolute frequency measured to be 642 121 496 772 645.14(26) Hz. The fractional uncertainty of $4.0 \times 10 ^{-16}$ is comparable to that of the best previously reported measurement, which was made by a direct comparison to local caesium primary frequency standards., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more kilometer--scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. The key sections of this report present the physics case and technical challenges, together with a comprehensive overview of the discussions at the workshop together with the main conclusions.

Abstract

We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies., We thank the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative for their support of the workshop that laid the basis for this paper.

Abstract

The highly forbidden electric octupole transition in is a potential candidate for a redefinition of the SI second. We present a measurement of the absolute frequency of this optical transition, performed using a frequency link to International Atomic Time to provide traceability to the SI second. The optical frequency standard was operated for 76% of a 25-day period, with the absolute frequency measured to be 642 121 496 772 645.14(26) Hz. The fractional uncertainty of is comparable to that of the best previously reported measurement, which was made by a direct comparison to local caesium primary frequency standards.
