Recent advancements in high-resolution spectroscopy analyses within the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) have paved the way for measuring the concentration of chemical species in crystalline materials at the atomic scale. However, several artifacts complicate the direct interpretation of experimental data. For instance, in the case of energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, the linear dependency of local x-ray emission on composition is disrupted by channeling effects and cross-talk during electron beam propagation. To address these challenges, it becomes necessary to adopt an approach that combines experimental data with inelastic scattering simulations. This method aims to account for the effects of electron beam propagation on x-ray emission, essentially determining the quantity and the spatial origin of the collected signal. In this publication, we propose to assess the precision and sensitivity limits of this approach in a practical case study involving a focused ion beam (FIB)-prepared III-N multilayers device. The device features nominally pure ~1.5-nm thick GaN quantum wells surrounded by AlGaN barriers containing a low concentration of aluminum (~5 at. %). By employing atomic-scale EDX acquisitions based on the averaging of more than several thousand frames, calibrated $\zeta$-factors combined with a multi-layer x-ray absorption correction model for quantification, and by comparing the x-ray radiation obtained from the quantum well with a reference 10-nm thick structure, we demonstrate that the quantitative impact of beam propagation on chemical composition can be precisely accounted for, resulting in a composition sensitivity at the atomic scale as low as +-0.25 at.%. Finally, practical aspects to achieve this high precision level are discussed, particularly in terms of inelastic multislice simulation, uncertainty determination, and sample quality.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), an ESA L-class mission, is designed to detect gravitational waves in the millihertz frequency band, with operations expected to begin in the next decade. LISA will enable studies of astrophysical phenomena such as massive black hole mergers, extreme mass ratio inspirals, and compact binary systems. A key challenge in analyzing LISA's data is the significant laser frequency noise, which must be suppressed using time-delay interferometry (TDI). Classical TDI mitigates this noise by algebraically combining phase measurements taken at different times and spacecraft. However, data gaps caused by instrumental issues or operational interruptions complicate the process. These gaps affect multiple TDI samples due to the time delays inherent to the algorithm, rendering surrounding measurements unusable for parameter inference. In this paper, we apply the recently proposed variant of TDI known as TDI-$\infty$ to astrophysical parameter inference, focusing on the challenge posed by data gaps. TDI-$\infty$ frames the LISA likelihood numerically in terms of raw measurements, marginalizing over laser phase noises under the assumption of infinite noise variance. Additionally, TDI-$\infty$ is set up to incorporate and cancel other noise sources beyond laser noise, including optical bench motion, clock noise, and modulation noise, establishing it as an all-in-one TDI solution. The method gracefully handles measurement interruptions, removing the need to explicitly address discontinuities during template matching. We integrate TDI-$\infty$ into a Bayesian framework, demonstrating its superior performance in scenarios involving gaps. This summary of the second Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry (TVLBAI) Workshop provides a comprehensive overview of our meeting held in London in April 2024, building on the initial discussions during the inaugural workshop held at CERN in March 2023. Like the summary of the first workshop, this document records a critical milestone for the international atom interferometry community. It documents our concerted efforts to evaluate progress, address emerging challenges, and refine strategic directions for future large-scale atom interferometry projects. Time-delay interferometry (TDI) suppresses laser frequency noise by forming linear combinations of time-shifted interferometric measurements. The time-shift operation is implemented by interpolating discretely sampled data. To enable in-band laser noise reduction by eight to nine orders of magnitude, interpolation has to be performed with high accuracy. Optimizing the design of those interpolation methods is the focus of this work. Previous research that studied constant time-shifts suggested Lagrange interpolation as the interpolation method for TDI. Its transfer function performs well at low frequency but requires a high number of coefficients. Furthermore, when applied in TDI we observed prominent time-domain features when a time-varying shift scanned over a pure integer sample shift. To limit this effect we identify an additional requirement for the interpolation kernel: when considering time-varying shifts the interpolation kernel must be sufficiently smooth to avoid unwanted time-domain transitions that produce glitch-like features in power spectral density estimates. The Lagrange interpolation kernel exhibits a discontinuous first derivative by construction, which is insufficient for the application to LISA or other space-based GW observatories. As a solution we propose a novel design method for interpolation kernels that respect a predefined requirement on in-band interpolation residuals and that possess continuous derivatives up to a prescribed order. Using this method we show that an interpolation kernel with 22 coefficients is sufficient to respect LISA's picometre-requirement and to allow for a continuous first derivative which suppresses the magnitude of the time-domain transition adequately. The reduction from 42 (Lagrange interpolation) to 22 coefficients enables us to save computational cost and increases robustness against artefacts in the data., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures

We demonstrate an end-to-end technique for observing and characterizing massive black hole binary signals before they merge with the LISA space-based gravitational-wave observatory. Our method uses a zero-latency whitening filter, originally designed for rapidly observing compact binary mergers in ground-based observatories, to be able to observe signals with no additional latency due to filter length. We show that with minimal computational cost, we are able to reliably observe signals as early as 14 days premerger as long as the signal has accrued a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 8 in the LISA data. We also demonstrate that this method can be used to characterize the source properties, providing early estimates of the source's merger time, chirp mass, and sky localization. Early observation and characterization of massive black holes is crucial to enable the possibility of rapid multimessenger observations, and to ensure that LISA can enter a protected operating period when the merger signal arrives., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the first scientific endeavour to detect and study gravitational waves from space. Interspacecraft ranging is crucial for the suppression of laser frequency noise via time-delay interferometry (TDI). So far, the effects of on-board delays and ambiguities on the LISA ranging observables were neglected in LISA modelling and data processing investigations. In reality, on-board delays cause offsets and timestamping delays in the LISA measurements, and pseudo-random noise (PRN) ranging is ambiguous, as it only determines the range up to an integer multiple of the PRN code length. In this article, we identify the four LISA ranging observables: PRN ranging, the sideband beatnotes at the interspacecraft interferometer, TDI ranging, and ground-based observations. We derive their observation equations in the presence of on-board delays, noise, and ambiguities. We then propose a three-stage ranging sensor fusion to combine these observables in order to gain accurate and precise ranging estimates. We propose to calibrate the on-board delays on ground and to compensate the associated offsets and timestamping delays in an initial data treatment (stage 1). We identify the ranging-related routines, which need to run continuously during operation (stage 2), and implement them numerically. Essentially, this involves the reduction of ranging noise, for which we develop a Kalman filter combining the PRN ranging and the sideband beatnotes. We further implement crosschecks for the PRN ranging ambiguities and offsets (stage 3). We show that both ground-based observations and TDI ranging can be used to resolve the PRN ranging ambiguities. Moreover, we apply TDI ranging to estimate the PRN ranging offsets.

Finding a stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) of astrophysical or primordial origin is one of the quests of current and future gravitational-wave observatories. While detector networks such as LIGO-Virgo-Kagra or pulsar timing arrays can use cross-correlations to tell instrumental noise and SGWB apart, LISA is likely to be the only flying detector of its kind in 2035. This particularity poses a challenge for data analysis. To tackle it, we present a strategy based on Bayesian model selection. We use a flexible noise power spectral density~(PSD) model and the knowledge of noise and signal transfer functions to allow SGWBs detection when the noise PSD is unknown. Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is a crucial step in the on-ground data processing pipeline of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), as it reduces otherwise overwhelming laser noise and allows for the detection of gravitational waves. This being said, several laser noise couplings have been identified that limit the performance of TDI. First, on-board processing, which is used to decimate the sampling rate from tens of MHz down to a few Hz, requires careful design of the anti-aliasing filters to mitigate folding of laser noise power into the observation band. Furthermore, the flatness of those filters is important to limit the effect of the flexing-filtering coupling. Secondly, the post-processing delays applied in TDI are subject to ranging and interpolation errors. All of these effects are partially described in the literature. In this paper, we present them in a unified framework and give a more complete description of aliased laser noise and the coupling of interpolation errors. Furthermore, for the first time, we discuss the impact of laser locking on laser noise residuals in the final TDI output. To verify the validity of the analytic PSD models we derive, we run numerical simulations using LISA Instrument and calculate second-generation TDI variables with PyTDI. We consider a setup with six independent lasers and with locked lasers (locking configuration N1-12). We find that laser locking indeed affects the laser noise residual in the TDI combination as it introduces correlations among the six lasers inducing slight modulations of the PSD compared to the case of six independent lasers. This implies further studies on laser noise residuals should consider the various locking configurations to produce accurate results., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

The data produced by the future space-based millihertz gravitational-wave detector LISA will require nontrivial pre-processing, which might affect the science results. It is crucial to demonstrate the feasibility of such processing algorithms and assess their performance and impact on the science. We are building an end-to-end pipeline that includes state-of-the-art simulations and noise reduction algorithms. The simulations must include a detailed model of the full measurement chain, capturing the main features that affect the instrument performance and processing algorithms. In particular, we include in these simulations, for the first time, proper relativistic treatment of reference frames with realistic numerically-optimized orbits; a model for onboard clocks and clock synchronization measurements; proper modeling of total laser frequencies, including laser locking, frequency planning and Doppler shifts; and a better treatment of onboard processing. Using these simulated data, we show that our pipeline is able to reduce the most critical noises and form synchronized observables. By injecting signals from a verification binary, we demonstrate that good parameter estimation can be obtained on this more realistic setup, extending existing results from previous LISA Data Challenges., Comment: Moriond Gravitation 2023 Proceedings, 7 pages, 5 figures

Within its Voyage 2050 planning cycle, the European Space Agency (ESA) is considering long-term large class science mission themes. Gravitational-wave astronomy is among the topics under study. Building on previous work by other authors, this paper studies a gravitational-wave interferometer concept, dubbed "LISAmax", consisting of three spacecraft, each located close to one of the Sun-Earth libration points L3, L4 and L5, forming a triangular constellation with an arm length of 259 million kilometers (to be compared to LISA's 2.5 million kilometer arms). We argue that this is the largest triangular formation that can be reached from Earth without a major leap in mission complexity and cost (hence the name). The sensitivity curve of such a detector is at least two orders of magnitude lower in amplitude than that of LISA, at frequencies below 1 mHz. This makes the observatory sensitive to gravitational waves in the {\mu}Hz range and opens a new window for gravitational-wave astronomy, not covered by any other planned detector concept. We analyze in detail the constellation stability for a 10-year mission in the full numerical model including insertion, dispersion, and self-gravity-induced accelerations. We compute the orbit transfers using a European launcher and chemical propulsion. Different orbit options, such as precessing, inclined orbits, the use of flybys for the transfer, and the launch strategy, are discussed. The payload design parameters are assessed, and the expected sensitivity curve is compared with a number of potential gravitational-wave sources. Detecting stochastic background radiation of cosmological origin is an exciting possibility for current and future gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. However, distinguishing it from other stochastic processes, such as instrumental noise and astrophysical backgrounds, is challenging. It is even more delicate for the space-based GW observatory LISA since it cannot correlate its observations with other detectors, unlike today's terrestrial network. Nonetheless, with multiple measurements across the constellation and high accuracy in the noise level, detection is still possible. In the context of GW background detection, previous studies have assumed that instrumental noise has a known, possibly parameterized, spectral shape. To make our analysis robust against imperfect knowledge of the instrumental noise, we challenge this crucial assumption and assume that the single-link interferometric noises have an arbitrary and unknown spectrum. We investigate possible ways of separating instrumental and GW contributions by using realistic LISA data simulations with time-varying arms and second-generation time-delay interferometry. By fitting a generic spline model to the interferometer noise and a power-law template to the signal, we can detect GW stochastic backgrounds up to energy density levels comparable with fixed-shape models. Motivated by multi-center biomedical studies that cannot share individual data due to privacy and ownership concerns, we develop communication-efficient iterative distributed algorithms for estimation and inference in the high-dimensional sparse Cox proportional hazards model. We demonstrate that our estimator, even with a relatively small number of iterations, achieves the same convergence rate as the ideal full-sample estimator under very mild conditions. To construct confidence intervals for linear combinations of high-dimensional hazard regression coefficients, we introduce a novel debiased method, establish central limit theorems, and provide consistent variance estimators that yield asymptotically valid distributed confidence intervals. In addition, we provide valid and powerful distributed hypothesis tests for any coordinate element based on a decorrelated score test. We allow time-dependent covariates as well as censored survival times. Extensive numerical experiments on both simulated and real data lend further support to our theory and demonstrate that our communication-efficient distributed estimators, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests improve upon alternative methods.

LISA is an upcoming ESA mission that will detect gravitational waves in space by interferometrically measuring the separation between free-falling test masses at picometer precision. To reach the desired performance, LISA will employ the noise reduction technique time-delay interferometry (TDI), in which multiple raw interferometric readouts are time shifted and combined into the final scientific observables. Evaluating the performance in terms of these TDI variables requires careful tracking of how different noise sources propagate through TDI, as noise correlations might affect the performance in unexpected ways. One example of such potentially correlated noise is the relative intensity noise (RIN) of the six lasers aboard the three LISA satellites, which will couple into the interferometric phase measurements. In this article, we calculate the expected RIN levels based on the current mission architecture and the envisaged mitigation strategies. We find that strict requirements on the technical design reduce the effect from approximately 8.7 pm/rtHz per inter-spacecraft interferometer to that of a much lower sub-1 pm/rtHz noise, with typical characteristics of an uncorrelated readout noise after TDI. LISA is a space-based mHz gravitational-wave observatory, with a planned launch in 2034. It is expected to be the first detector of its kind, and will present unique challenges in instrumentation and data analysis. An accurate preflight simulation of LISA data is a vital part of the development of both the instrument and the analysis methods. The simulation must include a detailed model of the full measurement and analysis chain, capturing the main features that affect the instrument performance and processing algorithms. Here, we propose a new model that includes, for the first time, proper relativistic treatment of reference frames with realistic orbits; a model for onboard clocks and clock synchronization measurements; proper modeling of total laser frequencies, including laser locking, frequency planning and Doppler shifts; better treatment of onboard processing and updated noise models. We then introduce two implementations of this model, LISANode and LISA Instrument. We demonstrate that TDI processing successfully recovers gravitational-wave signals from the significantly more realistic and complex simulated data. The LISA mission is the future space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory of the European Space Agency. It is formed by 3 spacecraft exchanging laser beams in order to form multiple real and virtual interferometers. The data streams to be used in order to extract the large number and variety of GW sources are Time-Delay Interferometry (TDI) data. One important processing to produce these data is the TDI on-ground processing which recombines multiple interferometric on-board measurements to remove certain noise sources from the data such as laser frequency noise or spacecraft jitter. The LISA noise budget is therefore expressed at the TDI level in order to account for the different TDI transfer functions applied for each noise source and thus estimate their real weight on mission performance. In order to derive a usable form of these transfer functions, a model of the beams, the measurements, and TDI have been developed, and several approximation have been made. A methodology for such a derivation has been established, as well as verification procedures. It results in a set of transfer functions, which are now used by the LISA project, in particular in its performance model. A prevalent feature of high-dimensional data is the dependence among covariates, and model selection is known to be challenging when covariates are highly correlated. To perform model selection for the high-dimensional Cox proportional hazards model in presence of correlated covariates with factor structure, we propose a new model, Factor-Augmented Regularized Model for Hazard Regression (FarmHazard), which builds upon latent factors that drive covariate dependence and extends Cox's model. This new model generates procedures that operate in two steps by learning factors and idiosyncratic components from high-dimensional covariate vectors and then using them as new predictors. Cox's model is a widely used semi-parametric model for survival analysis, where censored data and time-dependent covariates bring additional technical challenges. We prove model selection consistency and estimation consistency under mild conditions. We also develop a factor-augmented variable screening procedure to deal with strong correlations in ultra-high dimensional problems. Extensive simulations and real data experiments demonstrate that our procedures enjoy good performance and achieve better results on model selection, out-of-sample C-index and screening than alternative methods.

The analysis of gravitational wave (GW) datasets is based on the comparison of measured time series with theoretical templates of the detector's response to a variety of source parameters. For LISA, the main scientific observables will be the so-called time-delay interferometry (TDI) combinations, which suppress the otherwise overwhelming laser noise. Computing the TDI response to GW involves projecting the GW polarizations onto the LISA constellation arms, and then combining projections delayed by a multiple of the light propagation time along the arms. Both computations are difficult to perform efficiently for generic LISA orbits and GW signals. Various approximations are currently used in practice, e.g., assuming constant and equal armlengths, which yields analytical TDI expressions. In this article, we present 'fastlisaresponse', a new efficient GPU-accelerated code that implements the generic TDI response to GWs in the time domain. We use it to characterize the parameter-estimation bias incurred by analyzing loud Galactic-binary signals using the equal-armlength approximation. We conclude that equal-armlength parameter-estimation codes should be upgraded to the generic response if they are to achieve optimal accuracy for high (but reasonable) SNR sources within the actual LISA data., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is a data processing technique for LISA designed to suppress the otherwise overwhelming laser noise by several orders of magnitude. It is widely believed that TDI can only be applied once all phase or frequency measurements from each spacecraft have been synchronized to a common time frame. We demonstrate analytically, using as an example the commonly-used Michelson combination X, that TDI can be computed using the raw, unsynchronized data, thereby avoiding the need for an initial synchronization processing step and significantly simplifying the initial noise reduction pipeline. Furthermore, the raw data is free of any potential artifacts introduced by clock synchronization and reference frame transformation algorithms, which allows to operate directly on the MHz beatnotes. As a consequence, in-band clock noise is directly suppressed as part of TDI, in contrast to the approach previously proposed in the literature (in which large trends in the beatnotes are removed before the main laser-noise reduction step, and clock noise is suppressed in an extra processing step). We validate our algorithm with full-scale numerical simulations that use LISA Instrument and PyTDI and show that we reach the same performance levels as the previously proposed methods, ultimately limited by the clock sideband stability., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission succeeded outstandingly in demonstrating key technological aspects of future space-borne gravitational-wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Specifically, LPF demonstrated with unprecedented sensitivity the measurement of the relative acceleration of two free-falling cubic test masses. Although most disruptive non-gravitational forces have been identified and their effects mitigated through a series of calibration processes, some faint transient signals of yet unexplained origin remain in the measurements. If they appear in the LISA data, these perturbations (also called glitches) could skew the characterization of gravitational-wave sources or even be confused with gravitational-wave bursts. For the first time, we provide a comprehensive census of LPF transient events. Our analysis is based on a phenomenological shapelet model allowing us to derive simple statistics about the physical features of the glitch population. We then implement a generator of synthetic glitches designed to be used for subsequent LISA studies, and perform a preliminary evaluation of the effect of the glitches on future LISA data analyses., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, to be submitted to PRD

This work develops central limit theorems for cross-validation and consistent estimators of its asymptotic variance under weak stability conditions on the learning algorithm. Together, these results provide practical, asymptotically-exact confidence intervals for $k$-fold test error and valid, powerful hypothesis tests of whether one learning algorithm has smaller $k$-fold test error than another. These results are also the first of their kind for the popular choice of leave-one-out cross-validation. Gravitational wave science is a dynamical, fast-expanding research field founded on results, tools and methodologies drawn from different research areas and communities. Early career scientists entering this field must learn and combine knowledge and techniques from a range of disciplines. The Workshop on Gravitational-Wave Astrophysics for Early Career Scientists (GWAECS), held virtually in May 2021, planted the seeds of an interdisciplinary, well-connected and all-inclusive community of early career scientists working on gravitational waves, able to exchange relevant information and ideas, build a healthy professional and international environment, share and learn valuable skills, and ensure that ongoing research efforts are perpetuated and expanded in order to attain the main scientific goals envisioned by the whole community. GWAECS was the first event unifying early career scientists belonging to different communities, historically associated with different large-scale gravitational wave experiments. It provided a broad perspective on the future of gravitational waves, offered training on soft and transferable skills and allowed ample time for informal discussions between early career scientists and well-known research experts. Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is a processing step essential for the scientific exploitation of LISA, as it reduces the otherwise overwhelming laser noise in the interferometric measurements. The fundamental idea is to define new laser-noise-free observables by combining appropriately time-shifted measurements. First- and second-generation TDI combinations cancel laser noise under the assumption that the LISA armlengths are constant or evolve linearly with time, respectively. We recently extended TDI by solving for the laser-noise-free combinations implicitly, writing the likelihood of the data directly in terms of the basic measurements, and using a discretized representation of the delays that can accommodate any time dependence of the armlengths. We named the resulting formalism "TDI-infinity'' [PRD 103, 082001 (2021)]. According to Tinto, Dhurandhar, and Joshi [arXiv/2105.02054], our matrix-based approach is invalidated by the simplified start-up conditions assumed for the design matrix that connects the time series of laser-noise fluctuations to the time series of interferometric measurements along the LISA arms. Here we respond that, if those boundary conditions are indeed unrealistic, they do not invalidate the algorithm, since one can simply truncate the design matrix to exclude "incomplete'' measurements, or set them to zero. Our formalism then proceeds unmodified, except that the length of the laser-noise canceling time series is reduced by the number of excluded measurements. Tinto and colleagues further claim that the matrix formulation is merely a finite representation of the polynomial ring of delay operators introduced by Dhurandar, Nayak, and Vinet to formalize TDI. Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is a post-processing technique used to reduce laser noise in heterodyne interferometric measurements with unequal armlengths, a situation characteristic of space gravitational detectors such as Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). This technique consists in properly time-shifting and linearly combining the interferometric measurements in order to reduce the laser noise by several orders of magnitude and to detect gravitational waves. In this communication, we show that the Doppler shift due to the time evolution of the armlengths leads to an unacceptably large residual noise when using interferometric measurements expressed in units of frequency and standard expressions of the TDI variables. We also present a technique to mitigate this effect by including a scaling of the interferometric measurements in addition to the usual time-shifting operation when constructing the TDI variables. The space-based gravitational-wave observatory LISA relies on a form of synthetic interferometry (time-delay interferometry, or TDI) where the otherwise overwhelming laser phase noise is canceled by linear combinations of appropriately delayed phase measurements. These observables grow in length and complexity as the realistic features of the LISA orbits are taken into account. In this paper we outline an implicit formulation of TDI where we write the LISA likelihood directly in terms of the basic phase measurements, and we marginalize over the laser phase noises in the limit of infinite laser-noise variance. Equivalently, we rely on TDI observables that are defined numerically (rather than algebraically) from a discrete-filter representation of the laser propagation delays. Data collection through censuses is conducted every 10 years on average in Latin America, making it difficult to monitor the growth and support needed by communities living in these settlements. Conducting a field survey requires logistical resources to be able to do it exhaustively. The increasing availability of open data, high-resolution satellite images, and free software to process them allow us to be able to do so in a scalable way based on the analysis of these sources of information. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a European Space Agency mission that aims to measure gravitational waves in the millihertz range. The three-spacecraft constellation forms a nearly-equilateral triangle, which experiences flexing along its orbit around the Sun. These time-varying and unequal armlengths require to process measurements with time-delay interferometry (TDI) to synthesize virtual equal-arm interferometers, and reduce the otherwise overwhelming laser frequency noise. Algorithms compatible with such TDI combinations have recently been proposed in order to suppress the phase fluctuations of the onboard ultra-stable oscillators (USO) used as reference clocks. In this paper, we propose a new method to cancel USO noise in TDI combinations. This method has comparable performance to existing algorithms, but is more general as it can be applied to most TDI combinations found in the literature. We compute analytical expressions for the residual clock noise before and after correction, accounting for the effect of time-varying beatnote frequencies, previously neglected. We present results of numerical simulations that are in agreement with our models, and show that clock noise can be suppressed below required levels. The suppression algorithm introduces a new modulation noise, for which we propose a partial mitigation. This modulation noise remains the limiting effect for clock-noise suppression, setting strict timing requirements on the sideband generation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Recent progress in the on-surface synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) has given access to atomically precise narrow GNRs with tunable electronic band gaps that makes them excellent candidates for room-temperature switching devices such as field-effect transistors (FET). However, in spite of their exceptional properties, significant challenges remain for GNR processing and characterization. This contribution addresses some of the most important challenges, including GNR fabrication scalability, substrate transfer, long-term stability under ambient conditions and ex situ characterization. We focus on 7- and 9-atom wide armchair graphene nanoribbons (i.e, 7-AGNR; and 9-AGNR) grown on 200 nm Au(111)/mica substrates using a high throughput system. Transfer of both, 7- and 9-AGNRs from their Au growth sub-strate onto various target substrates for additional characterization is accomplished utilizing a polymer-free method that avoids residual contamination. This results in a homogeneous GNR film morphology with very few tears and wrinkles, as examined by atomic force microscopy. Raman spectroscopy indicates no significant degradation of GNR quality upon substrate transfer, and reveals that GNRs have remarkable stability under ambient conditions over a 24-month period. The transferred GNRs are analyzed using multi-wavelength Raman spectroscopy, which provides detailed insight into the wavelength dependence of the width-specific vibrational modes. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a European Space Agency mission that aims to measure gravitational waves in the millihertz range. Laser frequency noise enters the interferometric measurements and dominates the expected gravitational signals by many orders of magnitude. Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is a technique that reduces this laser noise by synthesizing virtual equal-arm interferometric measurements. Laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have confirmed that this reduction is sufficient to meet the scientific goals of the mission in proof-of-concept setups. In this paper, we show that the on-board antialiasing filters play an important role in TDI's performance when the flexing of the constellation is accounted for. This coupling was neglected in previous studies. To reach an optimal reduction level, filters with vanishing group delays must be used on board or synthesized off-line. We propose a theoretical model of the residual laser noise including this flexing-filtering coupling. We also use two independent simulators to produce realistic measurement signals and compute the corresponding TDI Michelson variables. We show that our theoretical model agrees with the simulated data with exquisite precision. Using these two complementary approaches, we confirm TDI's ability to reduce laser frequency noise in a more realistic mission setup.
