Thalassinoides Ehrenberg, 1944 are relatively common bioturbational structures in carbonate shallow marine successions from the early Paleozoic. Much rarer is the reference to this ichnogenus in siliciclastic formations from the same age. In the Ordovician Lashkerak Formation cropping out at the Central Alborz mountains, Iran, Thalassinoides is a common trace fossil in wave-dominated shoreface complex and prodelta-mouth bar environments of a fluvial-dominated delta. We compare the Middle-to-Upper Ordovician branching networks of the Unit 2 of the Lashkerak Formation with the ichnospecies Thalassinoides horizontalis Myrow, 1995 emphasizing the almost entire beddingparallel orientation, regular branching and lack of constrictions and swellings. The eodiagenetic halos developed from mucus-lining walls, or by change of the original sediment fabric, typical of this and other ichnospecies of Thalassinoides in carbonate settings are not found in sandstones. The almost polygonal mazes from the Lashkerak Formation are also compared with the recently erected Protopaleodictyon aitkeni Morgan, Henderson & Pratt (2019), considered as a giant graphoglyptid in an early evolutionary stage of these forms in shallow marine environments. The distribution of conventional subichnofacies in deep‐water fan systems (i.e. Ophiomorpha rudis–Paleodictyon–Nereites‐subichnofacies) depends on the presence of fully turbulent non‐cohesive flows such as low‐density turbidites and high‐density turbidites. However, changes in flow state between laminar and turbulent conditions can affect the distribution style of conventional subichnofacies. This study deals with the effects of environmental or ecological stressors as a result of hybrid sediment gravity flows (hybrid event beds) on distribution and composition of trace fossils in the deep‐marine depositional system of the Ordovician Ghelli Formation in the north‐eastern Alborz Range. The spatial distribution and sedimentological character of hybrid sediment gravity flows, in particular their abundance in the down‐dip parts of lobe‐related facies associations, are interpreted as products of longitudinal and lateral transformation from turbidity currents to debris flows promoted by incorporation of significant claystone and mudstone clasts into the flow by seafloor erosion and flow bulking. Seven trace‐fossil assemblages were recognized in the channel and lobe‐related facies associations. The observed spatial distribution of trace‐fossil assemblages in the interpreted frontal and lateral lobe fringes, somewhat contrasts with conventional subichnofacies distribution models. The development of cohesive flows and rapid emplacement of turbidite, banded and debrite beds could be accompanied by fluctuations in physico‐chemical conditions and, hence, the time available for colonization and the lifestyle of producers. This study suggests that, compared to the archetypal models of the subichnofacies in down‐dip parts of lobe‐related facies associations, ichnodiversity and density of bioturbation are drastically reduced, and trace fossils are limited to simple, shallow‐tier feeding strategies. Commonly, the presence of cohesive flows may have forced the producers in the Paleodictyon and Nereites‐subichnofacies to migrate into lateral lobe fringe with more participation of low‐density turbidites. This study shows that, in addition to sedimentological and architectural criteria, ichnological criteria can also be used to distinguish between frontal and lateral lobe‐fringe deposits in unconfined systems. The Deh‐Molla Formation of the Alborz Zone in northern Iran is a key unit to understanding global sea‐level fluctuations, and likely climate changes during the Furongian Epoch. The sedimentological characteristics of the formation indicate that the succession was deposited on a gently sloping epeiric platform on the northern margin of Gondwana. The Paibian Member 1 of the Deh‐Molla Formation was deposited on a carbonate platform with stable environmental conditions, probably during a (semi)arid climate condition, as indicated by microbial–sponge patch reefs, thick‐bedded units formed in broad facies belts, and a thick dolomite unit formed under evaporative conditions. The overlying Member 2, considered to span the Jiangshanian–Age 10, includes thin‐bedded wavy, and rippled strata known as ribbon rocks. This sequence records considerable environmental fluctuations. Thin‐bedded strata with flat‐pebble conglomerates, hummocky cross‐stratification, lenticular, flaser, and wavy bedding, ripple cross‐lamination, and graded bedding signify that deposition of Member 2 took place in a depositional environment repeatedly affected by tidal currents, and storm waves. A comparison of the Deh‐Molla Formation, and particularly its ribbon rocks with coeval strata in Laurentia and North China reveals secular controls on their development. In contrast to the Furongian strata of the Great American Carbonate Bank, deposited under tropical conditions, the ribbon rocks of the Deh‐Molla Formation suggest deposition in a temperate latitude zone with dominant cool‐water conditions. However, the Deh‐Molla platform was seasonally subjected to monsoons that brought warm tropical waters to the region, and led to rapidly changing environments. Ooids, peloids, stromatolites, and other criteria suggestive of a tropical climate are frequent in Laurentian successions, but absent in the Deh‐Molla Member 2. However, both Laurentian and Gondwanan examples share characters that indicate comparable controls on their development. Significant environmental changes during the Furongian are indicated by the SPICE and HERB events, and the latter is taken as showing biotic and physico‐chemical changes in the ocean and atmosphere, possibly concurrent with the formation of ribbon rocks on different continental blocks. The shift of matground ecosystems to bioturbator-free settings was investigated in the Ordovician wave-dominated marine strata of the Shirgesht Formation in Central Iran. Ten ichnofabrics are recognized in shoreface–offshore and barrier-island sedimentary facies, representing a proximal-to-distal depositional trend along the studied profile. In the offshore settings, intensive burrowing on several tiers and bioirrigation, referred to the Thalassinoides (Th), Cruziana–Skolithos–Rosselia (CrSkRo), crowded Trichophycus (CT) and Cruziana–Helminthopsis (CrHe) ichnofabrics, prevented the development of matgrounds. As a result of the Ordovician radiation, progressive ecospace utilization by suspension-, deposit- and detritus-feeders, as represented by the Skolithos (Sk), Rosselia–Skolithos (RoSk), crowded Rosselia (CR) and Conichnus–Skolithos (CoSk) ichnofabrics, is regarded as a key factor for sediment mixing and reworking and thus disruption of the matgrounds in shoreface settings. However, the restriction on microbial growth was reduced in lower-offshore / shelf or tidal-flat and back-barrier settings, where Chondrites–Planolites (ChPl) and Planolites (Pl) ichnofabrics dominate. This restricted microbial growth resulted from physico-chemical stresses on infaunal communities, as shown by the low ichnodiversity, scattered burrowing, absence of complex tiering, and prevalence of simple feeding strategies. This study suggests that following the early Palaeozoic evolutionary radiations, a considerable increase in abundance of detritus-feeders, deposit-feeders, suspension-feeders, predators, vagile bilaterian metazoans and grazers in shallow-water benthic communities caused mat-building microorganisms to migrate into lower-offshore / shelf, tidal-flat and back-barrier settings, where colonization by burrowing organisms was delayed. The Mississippian successions of the Alborz tectonostratigraphic zone have been studied in several sections (Dozdehban, Naserabad, Shahmirzad, and Mighan) extending from north to southeast. The sedimentological data indicate three main facies associations (FA): (FA1) a basin to distal outer ramp of low‐energy, low‐oxygen environment with low bioturbation and less developed in situ fossils; (FA2) a middle ramp facies accompanied by storm‐induced sediments (tempestites), echinoderm‐dominated mud mounds, and high fragmentation of skeletal components; and (FA3) an inner ramp facies, represented by sand shoal, and lagoonal/back‐barrier, mainly characterized by the dominance of oolitic, bioclast, and intraclast grainstones. The sedimentary features imply the formation of the succession on a broad flat‐topped, high‐to‐moderate‐energy shelfal carbonate ramp which had been open to the N/NE, the downslope direction, as revealed by local palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. Analysis of several proxies indicates a subtropical palaeoclimate evidenced by (a) widespread tempestite facies and occurrence of storm‐depositional processes, (b) diverse and abundant pellet‐forming thalassinoideans and burrowing echinoids trace fossil assemblages, (c) geochemical proxy indicating a palaeotemperature of 23°–25°, and (d) a rich subtropical heterozoan fossil association. The middle‐upper Jurassic successions (Sargelu, Najmah, and Gotnia formations) of the NW sector of the Zagros Mountain belt are studied to generate a sequence stratigraphic model that helps to understand the Jurassic tectono‐depositional processes and palaeogeographic reconstructions of the northeastern passive margin of the Arabian Plate. The major geological structures observed in northwestern Iran indicate the predominance of an extensional deformation during the Toarcian to Aalenian owing to the eastern Mediterranean rifting. This extensional regime reached its maximum from the Early to Middle Jurassic, causing the fragmentation/drowning of the long‐lived Triassic to Early Jurassic carbonate platform and the development of the Hawraman intrashelf basin (HIB). Associated changes in marine current dynamics, trophic conditions, and degree of substrate oxygenation led to the bloom of oligotypical biota (Bositra limestones) creating unfavourable conditions for the development of other benthic communities (Sargelu Formation). Later, from the Callovian to Oxfordian, changes in carbonate production types (switch from the Bositra filament facies to the stromatolitic‐thrombolitic boundstones) remarkably decreased the dip angle of the depositional profile (Najmah Formation). A second‐order tectono‐eustatic cycle (a major long‐term transgressive/regressive [T/R] cycle) including six minor short‐term T/R facies cycles (TR1–TR6) is identified in the study area. The development of the T/R facies cycles during the Middle Jurassic (TR1–TR3; give‐up sequences; Sargelu Formation) as a result of combined global eustatic transgression and linear subsidence resulted in drowning and backstepping of the platform. In contrast, the short‐term cycles that developed in the upper Jurassic (TR4–TR6; keep‐up sequences; Najmah and Gotnia formations), following a sea‐level fall, resulted in progressive shallowing of the carbonate platform. This study suggests that extensional deformation of the area reached its peak in the transition of the Early to Middle Jurassic, leading to the creation of HIB, but either decreased or played a subordinate role to eustatic sea‐level variations during the deposition of the TR1–TR3 facies cycles (Bajocian‐Callovian). Changes in tectonic regime from an extensional deformation (Early Jurassic) to cooling subsidence (Middle Jurassic), accompanied by a long‐term transgressive sea‐level trend during the Middle Jurassic, were important factors in the development of anoxic trough environments with the deposition of organic‐rich intervals, represented by the TR1–TR3 facies cycles. Tectonic instability (tectonic uplift plus considerable differential subsidence due to the reactivation of faults) in the eastern margin of the Arabian platform during the Late Jurassic led to the development of the TR4–TR6 facies cycles. This study documents the distribution of matgrounds in a wide variety of environments recorded in the Ordovician Lashkerak and Ghelli Formations in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran in order to evaluate controls on their distribution along the marine depositional profile. Detailed facies analysis allowed differentiating three groups of facies associations in the Lower to Upper Ordovician deposits of the Lashkerak formation: (i) estuarine system; (ii) wave‐dominated shoreface‐offshore complex; and (iii) mixed river‐ and wave‐influenced deltaic system. The Middle to Upper Ordovician deposits of the Ghelli formation are divided into two groups of facies associations: (i) tide‐influenced deltaic succession and (ii) deep‐water fan system. Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) are present in deposits formed in the central estuarine basin (Lashkerak formation) and in proximal lobes and lobe fringes of deep–water turbidite fans (Ghelli formation). On the contrary, MISS are absent in deposits from the wave‐dominated shoreface‐offshore complex, river‐ and tide‐dominated deltas, and various subenvironments of the incised wave‐dominated estuary (i.e., bayhead delta and estuary mouth) and the deep‐marine turbidite fan system (i.e., turbidite channel, slope, and outer lobe). The lack of evidence of mat‐building microorganisms in the deltaic systems may have resulted from two factors: (1) high physico‐chemical stressors caused by river‐induced processes, and (2) increase in degree of sediment disturbance, biodiffusion, and bioirrigation by burrowing organisms. Formation of microbial mats in the wave‐dominated shoreface‐offshore complex was inhibited by the activity of an abundant and diverse infauna capable of reworking the sediment. Our analysis shows that the spatial distribution of microbial mats was controlled by an interplay of environmental factors and innovations in animal‐substrate interactions, mostly expressed by secular changes in bioturbation. The Tremadocian‐to‐Floian siliciclastic deposits of the Shirgesht Formation in the Kalmard Block of central Iran show abundant occurrences of the mid‐tier Trichophycus venosus, a common ichnotaxon in the archetypical Cruziana ichnofacies. This trace fossil records a considerable increase in exploitation of offshore infaunal ecospace in comparison with older formations. Here, Trichophycus is relatively long and wide, with numerous and deep successively stacked causative burrows, which form dense burrow systems building the Crowded Trichophycus ichnofabric (CTI). Such development of CTI and the increase in depth of bioturbation had a negative effect on preservation of shallow‐tier traces, for example arthropod burrows and trackways. This resulted in decreasing abundance of trilobite‐produced trace fossils towards the top of the succession. The palaeobiological and palaeoecological interpretation of CTI points to stable habitats in muddy substrates above the storm wave base with high content of food and oxygen in pore waters, low‐energy hydrodynamic regimes and a long colonization window. Moreover, the architecture and the morphological features of Trichophycus suggest a combined dwelling‐feeding activity of the resident fair‐weather producer showing the K‐selected/climax strategy. The ethology of the producer, palaeoecological interpretations and taphonomic signatures revealed that it preferred dewatered, compacted muddy substrates (firmgrounds) in offshore settings, which might be related to minor hiatuses or short‐lived discontinuities. Although the appearance of Trichophycus is concomitant to the earliest Cambrian agronomic revolution, it was uncommon until the early Ordovician, when locally it records infaunalization related to the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. Facies stacking patterns and stratigraphic relationships resulting from the interaction of fluvial and wave processes, along with the paleoshoreline orientation and key surfaces, are essential to understand the temporal changes in the rate of change of accommodation space (A) versus sediment supply rate (S). High-frequency sea-level fluctuations in deltaic systems are controlled by changing accommodation and accumulation, which are explained mainly by autocyclic or allocyclic mechanisms. In deltaic systems, changes in the A/S ratio can be showed by significant variations of the internal facies architecture and the external morphology of the delta complex. These criteria have been used to investigate the relationship between autocyclic and allocyclic processes on the architectural evolution of a mixed river- and wave-influenced asymmetrical delta during the Lower-to-Middle Ordovician in the southwest Central Iberian Zone, in Portugal. Relying on the sedimentary and ichnological characteristics, the herein defined Penha Garcia Formation is classified into two main groups of facies associations, which are interpreted as deposited in a mixed asymmetrical delta with a trend of along-strike variations between wave-dominated strandplain (updrift) and river-dominated deltaic settings (downdrift). The vertical stacking arrangements of parasequences led to the identification of five depositional phases (I to V). Detailed analysis of geometry and internal architecture of the depositional phases along depositional strike shows a highly variable number of shallowing-upward cycles and facies thicknesses/heterogeneity on the updrift and downdrift side due to changes in rates of accumulation and hydrodynamic processes. The stratigraphic architectural style of the depositional phases I to V, and the trend of the total regressive ascending shoreline trajectory, are evidences that the deposition of the Penha Garcia Formation likely took place under an increasing rate of accommodation due to long-term relative sea-level rise (allocyclic), and high subsidence rates coupled with an increase in sediment supply, which could have been locally amplified by compaction of the prodelta-related muddy beds (autocyclic). This study suggests that in evaluating the autocyclic mechanisms on deltaic processes in short-time scales, there is a remarkable difference in terms of its impact on the internal variability of the depositional phases, both in the updrift and downdrift regions of mixed-influenced asymmetrical deltas. The most important reasons for the different effects of autocyclic mechanisms can be related to facies-dependent differential compaction or local changes in subsidence pattern, differences in the proximity to the distributary channel system, and differences in the influence of intrinsic processes of storm and wave reworking (wave-sweeping mechanisms). Micro‐organisms producing microbially induced sedimentary structures, particularly epibenthic cyanobacteria, are not facies‐dependent and could flourish in any environment if appropriate ecological conditions were provided. Hence, the changes in environmental parameters are the controlling factors on ecological tolerance of the producers. This study on the lower Cambrian successions of the Lalun Formation in Central Iran shows that paralic environments reacted differently to changes in parameters such as river and tide energy, palaeo‐topography, the rate of sediment supply and fluctuations in sea‐level, even though all were characterized by sandy substrates suitable for the development of microbially induced sedimentary structures. Therefore, the abundance and preservation of microbially induced sedimentary structures varied in the different paralic environments. From a sequence stratigraphic viewpoint, this study demonstrates that erosional discontinuities lacked the conditions required for the substrate stabilization by microbial communities. The distribution, size and type of microbially induced sedimentary structures within high frequency cycles generally follow the trends of changes in vertical facies stacking patterns. Within systems tracts, the pattern, morphological diversity and size of microbially induced sedimentary structures are not dependent on the type of systems tract, but on the type of depositional system developed such as delta, incised valley, coastal plain, estuaries and shoreline to shelf systems. Generally, estuarine and peritidal carbonates record an increase in the development of mat colonization during the transgressive systems tract, owing to decreased sedimentation rate as well as extended shallow water habitats. In contrast, the existence of microbially induced sedimentary structures depends on the pattern of shoreline shift in depositional systems developed during the highstand systems tract, such as open coast tidal flat and delta environments. If a shoreline regression was continuous (depositional trend and stacking pattern are a set of high frequency cycles), a greater increase in the aggradational component than the progradational component would cause intensified destructive processes hindering the development of microbial communities. Cyclic successions are one of the most important types of deposits in the carbonate platform of the Mississippian (Tournaisian-Viséan) in Gondwanan and Laurussian margins. The importance of climatically induced events impact on the amplitudes and frequencies of sea-level fluctuations in Mississippian of Iran is significant because the beginning, extent, duration, and significance of periods of climatically induced events in northern margin of Gondwana are not well recognized. A high-resolution sequence architecture in integration with paleoenvironmental reconstruction and foraminiferal biozonation from the Tournaisian-early Visean carbonate successions of the Mobarak Formation in Alborz basin along depositional strike (E-W- a distance of c. 340 km) suggests a mosaic-like pattern of deposition and compartmentalization of the depositional settings (homocline ramp to distally steepened ramp). According to the recognized facies, the stacking pattern of high-frequency cycles across the platform, and major accommodation events recognized on the correlated Fischer plots, six 3rd-order sequences (DS1–DS6) were identified. Detailed analysis on high-frequency cycles representing a highly variable number of shallowing-upward cycles, types, thicknesses, and facies heterogeneity along depositional strike. A combination of the episodic tectonic events along faults interacting with autocyclic processes, and inherited topographic irregularities are suggested as the driving mechanism for the cycle development. Six stages of Mobarak carbonate platform evolution based on understand the interplay of autocyclic and allocyclic controls are recognized in a hierarchical 3rd-order sequence stratigraphic framework and a chronological order: (1) early Hastarian corresponds to post-glacial transgressive episode with progressive backstepping of facies belts of early TST of DS1 throughout the region; (2) middle to late Hastarian corresponds to a major transgressional phase of DS1 following global temperature rise superimposed on different subsidence/uplift rates with the deformation of the platform along depositional strike; (3) Hastarian–Ivorian boundary corresponds to TST of DS2 with facies heterogeneity along depositional strike related to continuation of different subsidence/uplift rates. The absence of any systematic changes in the amplitude and period of cyclicity or lowstand deposits and subaerial surfaces during this phase shows the lack of influence of mid-Tournaisian glaciation and concurrent eustatic regression in northern margin of Gondwana. (4) early to middle Ivorian coincides with the RST of DS2 and TST of DS3 showing by remarkable topographic irregularities in the basin physiography and change in the position of the depocenter axis from a E–W trend to the center; (5) late Ivorian-early Moliniacian coincides with the RST of DS3 and DS4 showing by the Late Tournaisian thermal period and eustatic rise superimposed on uplift and subaerial exposure of the western part and subsidence in the central and eastern parts of the basin; (6) Moliniacian coincides with DS5-DS6 sequences showing by change from fault-related topography to major tilted fault-block topography accompanied by eustatic sea-level fall caused indirectly by the Viséan and Serpukhovian glaciations phases. • Analyze along-strike variations in stratigraphic architectural style of the Tournaisian-Viséan successions. • Synthesis of autocyclic and allocyclic controls on changes in accommodation space along depositional strike. • Access a framework for tectonic and climatically induced event histories in the northeastern margin of Gondwana. • The importance of climatically induced events impact on the amplitudes and frequencies of sea-level fluctuations. • Results are useful for correlation to Tournaisian-Viséan strata in other parts of Gondwana. Abstract An updated lithostratigraphy of the Carboniferous to Early Permian succession, exposed in the southeastern Sanandaj-Sirjan Block is presented. The succession includes the unnamed Mississippian strata, the Asad Abad Formation (new) and the Vazhnan Formation (revised). The unnamed Mississippian strata, are disconformably covered by the Asad Abad Formaition. The Asad Abad Formation (late Serpukhovian-Moscovian), is disconformably overlain by the Vazhnan Formation. The late Gzhelian-Asselian Vazhnan Formation is disconformably covered by the late Early–Middle Permian Surmaq Formation at the type and reference sections. According to facies and stratal patterns, continuity, lithology, sedimentary structures, and skeletal composition, most of the Early Carboniferous sediments were deposited on broad, low-gradient ramps during periods of relative tectonic stability and regional subsidence. In contrast, during much of the Middle Carboniferous to Early Permian, southeast and northwest parts of the Sanandaj-Sirjan Block were dominated by siliciclastic influx, whereas the central part of this basin was dominated by ramp type platforms and sediment gravity flow deposits. The mosaic-like pattern of deposition observed in stages of platform evolution during Middle Carboniferous to Early Permian suggests a compartmentalization of the depositional settings that could be linked to considerable differential subsidence of fault movements. Abstract The lower Cambrian Lalun Formation of the Tabas Block, Central Iran, allows to generate a sequence stratigraphic model which characterises the sedimentary evolution and improves palaeoenvironmental interpretation of sedimentary successions along the northern margin of the Prototethys. This formation provides a key for understanding processes that took place during the late early Cambrian in Iran and is the best representative for the complex mosaic of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate systems which illustrate the development and evolution of fluvial and tide-dominated estuarine systems adjacent to an open coast during this interval in the region. Detailed facies analysis allows to differentiate five vertically-stacked groups of facies associations (fluvial facies associations; estuarine facies association; open coast tidal flat facies association; carbonate ramp facies association; and delta facies association) in the uppermost interval of the Lalun Formation. The conceptual depositional models for the siliciclastic-carbonate successions of the Lalun Formation are summarised in a sequence stratigraphic framework, including three third-order depositional sequences (braided fluvial systems; incised-valley fill; and carbonate ramp and tide-influenced delta systems). The data suggest that the Central Iranian Microcontinent broke up during latest Neoproterozoic–early Cambrian times, resulting in the Proto-/Palaeotethys rifting, with considerable differential subsidence recognizable from the reactivation of faults in the early Cambrian which led to new syn-rift successions. The mosaic pattern of deposition observed among the studied sections suggests a compartmentalization of the depositional setting as a result of the interplay between tectonics, sediment supply, and eustasy. Abrupt lateral changes in facies and thickness within the sequences depositional sequences suggest that deposition was controlled by repeated tectonic downdrop and uplift as a consequence of local syndepositional, extensional fault movements. Tectonic activities in the studied region controlled sedimentation and accommodation as well as the position of depocentres within the basin, and the stratal geometries within the sequences. However, the stratigraphic architectural style of the depositional sequences and the asymmetrical trend of the transgressive and regressive second-order sequences imply that the deposition of the late early Cambrian successions is at least partly a result of eustatic sea level changes and cannot be linked exclusively to differential subsidence due to fault movements. Our study indicates that stratigraphic relationship between carbonate and siliciclastic facies in the depositional sequences was also controlled by subsidence/uplift in the hinterland and the areas of siliciclastic input rather than climatic changes. The late early Cambrian depositional environments evolved from braided rivers and an incised valley system (lowstand) to transgressive incised-valley-fill successions which are capped by transgressive open coast tidal flat and carbonate open marine facies. Depositional history of the formation terminated with a regression that ceased with progradation of tide-influenced delta systems. The stratigraphic evolution described in this study documents an eustatic sea-level fall interposed between the top of the Lalun Formation and the base of transgressive tidal bars of the overlying Fasham Formation reflecting the complex (sub-)globally recognizable regressive–transgressive event at the lower–middle Cambrian boundary interval, which led to the establishment of an extensive middle–late Cambrian carbonate platform in present-day northern and central Iran. The Tournaisian-Visean carbonate successions of the Esfahan-Sirjan Basin (ESB) from Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, Iran, have been used to generate a sequence stratigraphic model that enhances facies characterization and improves paleoenvironmental interpretation of shallow marine successions deposited along the southern margin of the Paleotethys. Detailed facies analysis allowed to differentiate seven facies, which, in order of decreasing abundance, are: (1) shaly and marly, F1; (2) peloidal mudstones/wackestones, F2; (3) peloidal/bioclastic packstones, F3; (4) intraclastic/bioclastic packstones/grainstones, F4; (5) oolitic/bioclastic packstone/grainstone, F5; (6) sandy intraclastic/bioclastic grainstones, F6; (7) sandy oolitic/bioclastic grainstones, F7. The different facies can be grouped into three facies associations that correspond to different environments of a carbonate platform with ramp geometry (homoclinal), from outer ramp (F1 and F2), mid-ramp (F3, F4 and F6) to inner ramp areas (F5 and F7). Meter-scale cycles are the basic building blocks of shallow marine carbonate successions of the Tournaisian-Viséan ramp of the ESB. Small-scale cycles are stacked into medium-scale cycles that in turn are building blocks of large-scale cycles. According to the recognized facies and the stacking pattern of high-frequency cycles across the ramp, five large-scale cycles in the southeastern outcrops (Tournaisian-Viséan) and three large-scale cycles in the northwest outcrops (Viséan) related to eustatic sea-level changes can be recognized. The overall retrogradational nature of the carbonate ramp, illustrated by both vertical facies relationships and the stacking patterns of high-frequency cycles within the third-order cycles, implies that the deposition of the Tournaisian-Viséan successions mainly took place under a long-term transgressive sea-level trend. The stratigraphic architectural style of the sequences, characterized by the lack of lowstand deposits and exposure surfaces, associated with the evidence of progressive increase in the proportion of backstepping of facies belts across bounding surfaces and predominant subtidal characteristics, is in accordance with the long-term transgressive sea-level trend and greenhouse conditions during the Tournaisian-Viséan. The continued transgression on this broad shelfal platform could lead to the shutdown of the shallow water carbonate factory, reduction in sediment supply or sediment transport towards the offshore setting and the development of give-up sequences. This study analyzes in detail the beds bearing Rhizocorallium in the Upper Triassic Nayband Formation (Tabas Block, Central Iran) and shows their potential in interpreting depositional settings, ecological features and sequence stratigraphy. An integrated approach combining ichnological, sedimentological and stratigraphic methods has significantly enhanced our understanding of the changes in the spatial distribution style and morphological differences among the same ichnospecies of Rhizocorallium . The Upper Triassic Rhizocorallium assemblages from the Nayband Formation reveal significant spatial variations in the orientation and dimensions (i.e., length, width, limb diameter), the tiering pattern, and the colonization style throughout systems tracts and at erosional discontinuities or omission surfaces. Based on the wide variety of forms and orientation, numerous morphotypes of Rhizocorallium are grouped into two main types, i.e., those that are mostly facies controlled and those that appear abundantly in a confined stratigraphic interval and are facies independent. In this respect, three paleoichnocoenoses or habitats for the rhizocorallid producers could be differentiated according to the burrow morphology and the nature and consistency of the substrate: (1) stable habitat, represented by soft substrates including horizontal, long, straight or slightly sinuous, spreite-bearing, U-shaped protrusive burrows of Rhizocorallium irregulare (= R. commune var. irregulare ). This habitat resulted from processes operating in settings that are characterized by soft substrates, reduced sedimentation rates, and abundant food supply, typical of low- to moderate-energy, fully marine conditions; (2) unstable, physically-controlled habitat, represented by a suite of shifting substrates with low- to high-energy settings, including short, U-shaped protrusive spreiten-burrows of R. jenense (Type 1) . In this habitat alternating and contrasting energy conditions did exist due to repeated storm events that were the main controlling factor in the distribution and preservation of Rhizocorallium ; (3) substrate-controlled habitat represented by a suite of stiff-to-firm substrates including oblique to vertical protrusive or retrusive spreiten U-shaped burrows of R. jenense (Type 2) . The erosional discontinuities or omission surfaces related to this habitat include parasequence-bounding transgressive surfaces of erosion (TSE) and parasequence-bounding flooding surfaces (FS) and are mainly associated with the Rhizocorallium -dominated Glossifungites ichnofacies. Complementary ichnological information indicates that the shift in the orientation and the morphological features of rhizocorallid burrows point to broad changes of environmental parameters, which are, in turn, controlled by the rate of sea-level changes. This study focuses on reservoir rock typing of the Oligo-Miocene Asmari Formation in order to introduce a field-scaled reservoir zonation for the strata in one petroleum field of SW Iran, where the formation is composed of mixed marginal marine sand/sandstones and shallow marine carbonates, capped by the evaporite-bearing Gachsaran Formation. On the way, sedimentary and diagenetic aspects of the formation are presented to characterize the main geologic factors controlling reservoir attributes of the petroleum field. Then, an integration of three different reservoir rock classification methods is applied to identify speed and/or baffle zones of the reservoir. Based on the results, the main speed zones of the field are comparable to the siliciclastics of the reservoir whose distribution is the product of sea-level-controlled terrigenous supply to the basin. Although the carbonates have high storage capacity owing to noticeable early diagenetic dissolution, they possess low flow capacity due to isolated network of pore spaces; therefore, they make the baffle zones of the field. The siliciclastic Gadvan Formation from Abadan Plain, southwestern Iran, is highly bioturbated and allows relationships between changes in ichnocoenoses within a depositional system to be documented and placed in a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework. Relying on the sedimentary and ichnological characteristics, the siliciclastic succession is divided into two facies associations: a wave-dominated offshore-shoreface complex and a tide-river influenced delta. The first includes facies that have been deposited in shelf-offshore, upper offshore, lower shoreface and upper/middle shoreface environments, the latter includes facies that have been deposited in prodelta and delta front. Integrated ichnologic and sedimentologic studies of the Gadvan Formation, allow distinction between prodelta and delta front and open marine deposits. With the identification of maximum flooding and ravinement surfaces as bounding surfaces of the stratal units, detailed analysis on systematic changes in the stacking pattern (cycle thickness, cycle type, and facies proportion) are made. Eight ichnocoenoses could be differentiated in the studied sections. The positions of the ichnocoenoses within genetically related stratal units (genetically related ichnocoenoses), indicate three large-scale cycles (DS1 to DS3, from oldest to youngest). The cyclical nature of the Gadvan Formation is attributed to low-amplitude eustasy in greenhouse conditions formed under interaction of eustatic high-frequency cycles and longer term tectonically driven sea-level variations during the long-term transgressive sea-level trend of the early Cretaceous. Stratigraphic architectural style of sequences DS1 to DS3 (which includes scarce evidence of lowstand deposits, partial or total truncation of the HST, and predominance of thick transgressive deposits), is remarkably similar to long-term transgressive sea-level trend of the Early Cretaceous across the Arabian Plate. This study suggests a more relatively seaward position of the siliciclastic successions of the Gadvan Formation of Abadan Plain than the Mesopotamian Basin (upper Zubair Formation equivalent in western Iraq and Kuwait), which would be concordant with the prevailing view of an easterly prograding coastline across the Arabian Plate. This study reveals important sedimentological and ichnological features and permits the development of predictive models for the paleoenvironmental and sequence stratigraphical significance of trace fossil assemblages that can be readily compared or translated to analogous depositional systems worldwide. The Lower Ordovician Shirgesht Formation in central Iran is composed of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks deposited in diverse coastal and marine shelfal environments (tidal flat, lagoon, shoreface, offshore-shelf and carbonate ramp). Five facies associations contain diverse ichnofossil assemblages that show distinct proximal to distal trends formed in a wide range of physical-chemical conditions. The ethological groups of trace fossils in the Shirgesht Formation reflect a gradient of depositional stress conditions across a wave-influenced shoreline and shelf. Deposits of wave-influenced environments make up a significant component of the geological record of shallow marine settings, and the ability to determine paleoenvironments in detail in such successions is critical for reconstruction of depositional histories and sequence-stratigraphic interpretation. The Cruziana ichnofacies of the study shows highly diverse suites that record the establishment of a benthic community under stable conditions and a long-term colonization window. The Skolithos ichnofacies recognized is a low diversity opportunistic ichnocommunity suite that resulted from colonization after tempestite deposition in a stressed environment. The strata record an onshore to offshore replacement of the Cruziana ichnofacies (with abundant feeding traces of deposit-feeders) by the Skolithos ichnofacies (dominated by suspension-feeders and predators). A transitional zone between the two ichnofacies coincides with the offshore-transition/distal lower-surface deposits. The distribution of ichnofacies, the diversity and range of ethological characteristics reflected by the ichnogenera, and the wide range of wave-dominated coastal facies demonstrate the potential to use individual trace fossils and ichnofacies for significantly refined palaeoenvironmental analysis of wave-dominated coastal settings, particularly in Ordovician successions. The Middle-Late Ordovician Ghelli Formation in the Kopet Dagh region northeastern Alborz range of Iran is composed of siliciclastic rocks deposited in a variety of turbidite to marginal marine environments (deep marine clastic fan and related environments and prodelta, distal delta front, proximal delta front and distributary channels). The ichnology of the middle member of the Ghelli Formation is here reported. Combined sedimentological and ichnological analysis allows recognition of a tide-influenced deltaic succession in the middle member of the Ghelli Formation consisting of three main facies associations: lower distributary channels, delta front and prodelta facies. Twenty-two ichnogenera have been identified in this marginal marine succession: Arenicolites, Arthrophycus, Bergaueria, Chondrites, Conichnus, Cruziana, Cylindrichnus, Didymaulichnus, Diplichnites, Diplocraterion, Helminthopsis, Gyrochorte, Lockeia, Macaronichnus, Monomorphichnus, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Rosselia, Rusophcus, Skolithos, Teichichnus and ?Scolicia. Their distribution is clearly linked with lithofacies and depositional palaeoenvironments. The ichnological analysis reveals that the trace fossil suites developed in these environments indicate low diversity and low to moderate abundance of burrows, poor development of tiering and sporadic distribution. Low ichnodiversity and low bioturbation intensities with higher bioturbation clusters consist of facies-crossing ichnogenera, and the impoverishment of suspension-feeding trophic types indicates 'stressed', non-archetypal expression of the Cruziana ichnofacies. The periodic higher intensities of bioturbation due to variations in hydrodynamic regimes of tidal currents reflect the archetypal of the Cruziana ichnofacies (and rare Skolithos ichnofacies). Changes in stacking patterns of facies, stratal architecture and shoreline trajectory along depositional strike are mainly dependent on along-strike differences in factors such as physical processes (rivers, waves, tides), tectonics, eustatic changes, sediment supply, and local physiography. The lower-upper Ordovician successions (Lashkerak Formation) deposited in a Peri-Gondwana shallow continental shelf have been interpreted using the sequence stratigraphic concepts. This approach allowed to highlight main differences along-strike in the co-existing depositional systems (coastal plains, estuaries, deltas, and shoreline to shelf systems) in the Alborz basin along the northern edge of Gondwana. On the basis of sedimentary and ichnological characteristics, the siliciclastic successions are divided into four facies associations: (i) Wave-dominated estuarine, (ii) Wave-dominated shoreface-offshore complex, (iii) Mixed fluvial (F)- and wave (W)-influenced delta (Fw and Wf), and (iv) Tide-dominated, fluvial-influenced delta (Tf). Six third-order depositional sequences (DS1-DS6) were recognized, each of them are bounded by unconformities and pronounced shifts in the facies. Along depositional strike (NE/SW- a distance of c. 150 km), significant intrabasinal changes in sediment supply produced evident lateral changes in the shoreline trajectory and stratal architecture, of the DS1-DS3 (Tremadocian-Floian), may be attributed to differences in physical processes (rivers, waves, tides activity) and topographic irregularities derive probably by different rates of subsidence in the basin. During the deposition of the DS1-DS3, a significant along-strike differences in the composition of ichnological suites and the lifestyle of benthonic organisms, dependent on the relative supremacy of wave, storm, river, and tidal processes. Sedimentary supply and processes are the main controlling factors for the stratigraphic architecture rather than the tectonic activity between Tremadocian and Floian. While during the Darriwilian-Katian interval (DS4-DS6), the tectonic activity predominates with the beginning of extensional phases related to the rifting in the Alborz basin causing the activation of syn-depositional normal faults and the development of block-faulted craton-ward margin. Typically, differential subsidence due to extensional tectonic activity causes the uplift of tectonic blocks west of the Alborz Basin into the emerging areas, on one hand, and simultaneous deepening-upward stacking patterns (i.e., increased subsidence rates) in the hanging-wall depocenters of east of the Alborz Basin, on the other hand. Based on their lithologic characteristics and stratal geometries, the Middle Cambrian Fasham and Deh-Sufiyan Formations of the lower Mila Group in the Central Alborz, northern Iran, exhibit 39 lithofacies representing several supratidal to deep subtidal facies belts. The siliciclastic successions of the Fasham Formation are divided into two facies associations, suggesting deposition in a tide-dominated, open-mouthed estuarine setting. The mixed, predominantly carbonate successions of the Deh-Sufiyan Formation are grouped into ten facies associations. Four depositional zones are recognized on the Deh-Sufiyan ramp: basinal, outer ramp (deep subtidal associations), mid ramp (shallow subtidal to lower intertidal associations), and inner ramp (shoal and upper intertidal to supratidal associations). These facies associations are arranged in small-scale sedimentary cycles, i.e., peritidal, shallow subtidal, and deep subtidal cycles. These cycles reflect spatial differences in the reaction of the depositional system to small-scale relative sea-level changes. Small-scale cycles are stacked into medium-scale cycles that in turn are building blocks of large-scale cycles. Systematic changes in stacking pattern (cycle thickness, cycle type, and facies proportion) allow to reconstruct long-term changes in sea-level. Six large-scale cycles (S1-S6) have been identified and are interpreted as depositional sequences showing retrogradational (transgressive systems tract) and progradational (highstand systems tract) packages of facies associations. Abstract: The paleoenvironmental significance of deep marine trace fossil assemblages in the upper Maastrichtian–Paleocene Amiran Formation has been done for the first time in Lurestan Province (NW Zagros) from the Zagros Fold–Thrust Belt. A semi-quantitative study of trace fossil abundance (bioturbation indices) in the Amiran Formation shows that trace fossil assemblages can be very powerful discriminators of deep-marine clastic fan and related environments. The Amiran Formation is a sand-rich, thick-bedded, and coarse-grained turbidite succession. Deep marine paleoenvironments from basin slope to basin floor settings are preserved. These strata contain a diverse and abundant pre- and post-depositional ichnofauna. Proximal and axial parts of the sandy systems show low-diversity and low-density trace fossil assemblages dominated by post-depositional trace fossils, but distal environments show a general increase in trace fossil diversity, abundance and number of pre-depositional trace fossils. The post-depositional association essentially consists of dwelling, feeding, and grazing traces. The pre-depositional assemblage is rich in graphoglyptids and grazing trails, and feeding structures also occur. The ichnodiversity, composition, ethology, and morphologic complexity of the pre-depositional association of the heterolithic successions of thin to thick-bedded turbidite sandstone and inter-turbidite mudstone are characteristic of three ichnosubfacies of the Nereites ichnofacies. These ichnosubfacies are identified in Amiran Formation deposits, the typical succession of ichnosubfacies can express a bathymetric trend from shallower to deeper parts and from higher-to-lower hydrodynamic conditions. They are: (1) the Ophiomorpha rudis ichnosubfacies (the proximal and axial parts with thick bedded channel and lobe related environments), (2) the Paleodictyon ichnosubfacies (channel-lobe transition in the distal lobe facies), and (3) the Nereites ichnosubfacies (distal part of off-axis lobe or fan fringe–basin floor transition and overbank settings). There is also mixed O. rudis to Paleodictyon ichnosubfacies (channel–margin, lobe–fringe in the proximal lobe facies). The dominance of Zoophycos and Chondrites in poor-oxygen basin floor facies may represent Zoophycos ichnofacies. The number of graphoglyptids increases from distal (basin floor) to proximal (fan fringe–basin floor transition, fan fringe, lobe complex fringe/lobe complex off-axis) settings. They are absent in the most proximal/axial lobe environments due to increased volume, frequency, erosive power of turbidity current events and sedimentation rate, grain size, decreased preservation potential of shallow tier, and pre-turbidite trace fossils. The ichnosubfacies method used here, as utilized by other authors, has the potential to improve paleoenvironmental analysis of other deep marine depositional settings, and in outcrop investigation of turbidite systems. This study integrates ichnological and sedimentological data to interpret depositional environments in the carbonate sediments of the Mobarak Fm. (Lower Carboniferous) in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran. Seven ichnofabrics including Thalassinoides (Th), Zoophycos‒Phycosiphon (Zo-Ph), Skolithos‒Thalassinoides (Sk-Th), Zoophycos‒Diplocraterion (Zo-Di), Thalassinoides‒Rhizocorallium (Th-Rh), Zoophycos‒Arenicolites (Zo-Ar) and Chondrites‒Phycosiphon (Ch-Ph) have been identified in the studied succession. Th ichnofabric is characterised by the dominance of the deposit-feeding trace fossils, revealing low sedimentation rate and activity of the organisms in a loose substrate. Vertical succession of the Zo-Ph, Sk-Th and Zo-Di ichnofabrics indicates change in the firmness of the substrate. Th-Rh and Zo-Ar ichnofabrics reveal two different energy phases including a lower energy condition with the activity of deposit-feeders and a higher energy phase identified by the activity of suspension-feeders. Ch-Ph ichnofabric is characterised by low diversity and low abundance of trace fossils that were identified in black, limy shale, displaying a long lasting outer ramp setting with low energy, low sedimentation rate, and dysoxic-anoxic conditions of the substrate. Ichnological features of the Mobarak Fm. are controlled by subsidence-inducing changes in the accommodation space of the depositional system dictating variations in paleoenvironmental conditions such as oxygen levels and hydrodynamic energy. The stratigraphic architecture, changes of depositional systems in lateral and vertical extent, and 3D-stacking pattern of second- and third-order sequences of the Cambrian successions on the northern Gondwanan margin indicates a distinct sea-level fall in the Alborz Zone and Central Iran corresponding with global sea-level fluctuations. The peak of the sea-level fluctuations is located at the boundary between the Lalun Formation and the base of the overlying Mila Group. A vertical trend from gradual sea-level rise during the Cambrian Series 2 (recorded as thick transgressive deposits of the Lalun Formation) to transgressive valley-fill system at the base of the Fasham Formation and overlying highstand subtidal carbonates (carbonate platform of the Deh-Sufiyan Formation) can be observed. This trend is paralleled by a change from mixgrounds with metazoan body fossils to microbial matgrounds and microbial boundstones (thrombolites and stromatolites). The general increase in vagile bilaterian metazoans led to a distinct proliferation in ichnofossils in the Lalun Formation indicating a considerable increase in progressive ecospace utilization and tiering complexity. These are associated with biodiffusion, sediment reworking and bioirrigation so that matgrounds were disrupted and mixed layer substrates developed. A proliferation of microbes took place at the base of the Mila Group, which is regarded as a reaction to unfavourable environmental conditions and considerable challenges for metazoans. Consequently, a dramatic degradation of marine bottom communities followed the major eustatic sea-level fall at the Cambrian Series 2–Miaolingian boundary interval and led to the decrease in ichnodiversity, bioturbation intensity, depth of bioturbation and burrow size at the base of the Mila Group. The carbonate‐dominated successions of the Tirgan Formation (Latest Barremian‐Early Aptian) in the Kopet‐Dagh Basin (Iran) were studied to decipher the tectonic and eustatic sea‐level effects, as well as the autogenic influence on lateral and vertical facies changes, depositional environment, and sequence stratigraphy of the tide‐wave‐dominated sediments at the northern margin of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean. Fourteen facies were identified in the studied sequences, here grouped into five facies associations according to the depositional setting: tidal flat (A), lagoon (B), shoal (C), shallow open‐marine (D), and deep‐open marine (E). A third‐order depositional sequence, including a transgressive system tract (TST) and a highstand system tract (HST) was also identified, along with several medium‐ and small‐scale, thickening‐ and shallowing‐upward cycles (parasequences). The development of the depositional sequence and parasequences of the studied successions of the Tirgan Formation were controlled by interactions between allogenic (tectonic and eustasy) and autogenic factors (wave and tidal hydrodynamic regimes). The allogenic factors mainly affected the stacking pattern and parasequence development of the TST deposits in the lower part of the Tirgan Formation, characterized mainly by the deep‐open marine association. Autogenic factors display a main influence on the stacking pattern and formation of the HST deposits and related parasequences, characterized by shallow open‐marine‐lagoon–shoal associations developed in the upper part of the Tirgan Formation. The tectono‐sedimentary model for the evolution of the tide‐wave‐dominated carbonate platform represented by the Tirgan Formation may be useful for further studies on sedimentary basin evolution or palaeogeographic reconstructions of the Neo‐Tethys margin. Zoophycos in the Mississippian Mobarak Formation (Central Alborz, Iran) shows its potential in interpreting depositional settings, ecological features and sequence stratigraphy. Zoophycos A (ZoA), Zoophycos B (ZoB), Zoophycos / Phycosiphon (Zo / Phy) and Phycosiphon (Phy) ichnocoenoses are identified in the middle and outer ramp facies of the Mobarak Formation on the basis of shape, ichnodensity, ichnocomplexity degree and size of Zoophycos and other trace fossils. Zoophycos portrays a proximal-to-distal trend in the storm-dominated ramp sequence. In deeper parts of the ramp with long-term stable conditions and organic enrichment, Zoophycos producers selected equilibrium strategies (K-selected), whereas into the shallower parts they opted for opportunistic behavior (r-selected) due to short-term stable conditions with low food flux. The feeding behavior proposed in this study is based on general morphology as well as mode of sediment exploiting, and includes deposit feeding and the caching model. Moreover, this study confirms that the distribution pattern of the Paleozoic Zoophycos producers within a sequence stratigraphic framework that was totally different from that of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. During the late transgressive systems tract (TST) and early highstand systems tract (HST), the excess of benthic food and the environmental stability, together with the prevalence of dysaerobic conditions, caused intense burrowing by the Zoophycos producer in proximal outer ramp to distal middle ramp. Its ethology, paleoecologic strategies and taphonomic signatures suggest that erosionally-exhumed, dewatered muddy beds (firmground) were not able to provide appropriate conditions for deposit-feeding Zoophycos producers as a consequence of their lower environmental stability. The Lower Carboniferous Mobarak Formation in the east of Central and Eastern Alborz Mountains, northern Iran, is deposited on a distally steepened carbonate ramp. Detailed facies analysis allowed to differentiate seven facies associations, includes deep marine basinal (FA1), toe-of-slope/outer ramp (FA2), ramp/slope (FA3), shallow open marine (FA4), bioclastic bars or shoal (FA5), lagoon (FA6) and intertidal flat (FA7). The trace-fossil suites of the studied successions are shown for the first time. Twenty eight ichnogenera were identified, i.e. Arenicolites, Asterosoma, Bergaueria, Chondrites, Cochlichnus, Diplocraterion, Halopoa, Helminthopsis, Helminthorhaphe ? , Helminthoidichnites, Gordia, Gyrochorte, Lockeia, Mammilichnis, Megagrapton, Nereites ? , Palaeophycus, Phycodes, Phycosiphon, Planolites, Protovirgularia, Rhizocorallium, Rosselia, Sinusichnus, Skolithos, Taenidium, Thalassinoides, and Zoophycos. The seven facies associations deposited in a wide range of physico-chemical conditions, show distinct proximal to distal trends. As a result of oxygen-depleted depositional conditions, only the tracemakers of Zoophycos survived in deep marine slopes, which were close to turbiditic sedimentation zones. The development of a benthic community under the stable condition and a long-term colonization window were documented by highly diverse suites of the Cruziana ichnofacies. Under a stressed environment (after tempestite deposition), the Skolithos ichnofacies displayed a low diversity of opportunistic ichnocommunity suite. The mixed Skolithos – Cruziana ichnofacies occur in the middle to distal lower inner ramp. The identification of the archetypal ichnofacies may document broad changes of environmental parameters such as variability in sedimentation rates, energy level, salinity, substrate properties/consistency, nature of nutrient supply and dissolved oxygen content. This study integrates ichnological and sedimentological data to interpret depositional environments of the carbonate sediments of the Tirgan Formation (Lower Cretaceous) in the eastern Kopet-Dagh Basin, north-east Iran. Lithofacies analysis shows that these sediments were deposited in inner ramp, middle ramp and offshore (outer ramp) environments. Five ichnoassemblages are identified in the sediments that consist of Thalassinoides, Thalassinoides–Rhizocorallium, Planolites–Rhizocorallium, Arenicolites–Diplocraterion, and Arenicolites. Th, Th-Rh and Pl-Rh with low diversity and abundance of the trace fossils formed during waning phase of storms in a predominantly medium to high-energy hydrodynamic regime. High sedimentation rate and mobile substrate condition featuring a shallow-marine setting. Ar–Di ichnoassemblage, consisting of horizontal and vertical traces of deposit and suspension feeders, respectively, portray two different phases. A predominantly high energy phase with instable substrate is displayed by the vertical traces, while a minor omission phase, associated with a decrease in sedimentation rate or non-deposition, is indicated by the horizontal structures. Arenicolites ichnoassemblage with low bioturbation index and low ichnodiversity is related to a semi-sheltered area of lagoon environments with periodically marine water circulation. The study of the ichnological attributes in the studied successions indicates the presence of a shallowing up-ward trend in the storm‒tide-dominated ramp sequence. Ichnoassemblage development is largely controlled by depositional and ecological conditions, e.g., the stability of substrate, hydrodynamic regime (wave and tide), and food abundance, which altogether control the substrate colonization. Based on an integrated ichnological and sedimentological approach, we characterize the depositional environment, deciphering allogenic and autogenic environmental controls on the trace fossil distribution on a passive margin depositional setting. Despite belonging to an important time slice in the geological history, the Eocene shallow-marine beds of the Alborz region in Iran have received little attention from researchers. We selected two stratigraphic sections (Mojen and Kalateh) ascribed to the Ziarat Formation as suitable representatives for the current analysis, emphasising on their constituent microfacies and paleoenvironmental implications. The biotic communities are characterised by larger benthic foraminifera (LBF), coralline algae, corals, and bivalves as the major carbonate facies components. The microfacies gradients and paleoenvironmental analysis suggest deposition in a shallow-marine oligotrophic ramp environment within two platform stages. Both these stages indicate an increase in water depth from the inner to the middle ramp settings with spatial distribution of the LBF and other benthic components. Our data support the previous view that the early Eocene witnessed an increase in LBF taxa with near obliteration of the coral reefs in the sedimentary platforms across the Tethys. The Albian–Turonian Sarvak Formation is the second most important reservoir of Iran. In this study, an integrated field-scale reservoir zonation is applied to the Sarvak reservoir in one oil field of the Dezful Embayment, SW Iran to understand the distribution of speed, barrier, and baffle zones. The geologic controls of depositional and post-depositional factors on the suggested reservoir zonation are also discussed here. Based on the results, the studied reservoir is composed of seven zones with different reservoir qualities. The best reservoir zones show considerable amount of dissolution pores, and are developed beneath regional-scale paleo-exposure surfaces that are also recognizable in coeval strata on the Arabian Plate. These surfaces represent recurring subaerial exposure episodes during the development of the Sarvak Formation through which meteoric diagenesis highly affected the rock record leading to the development of paleo-karst profiles with noticeable dissolution pores in the strata beneath the paleo-exposure surfaces. However, the long-lasting emergence time of the mid-Turonian exposure (mT-ES; the interface between the Sarvak Formation and overlying Ilam Formation) caused the over-maturation of the related paleo-karst profile and the deterioration of the created reservoir quality. The results of this study reveal the effects of regional-scale geologic controls on the reservoir characteristics of the Sarvak Formation and may be also applicable to the reservoir characterization of other time-equivalent strata in the Arabian Plate. • Diagenesis acted as the superior control on reservoir quality of the Sarvak Fm. • Seven reservoir zones are recognized in the Sarvak Formation. • Best reservoir zones are beneath some regional unconformity surfaces. • Subaerial exposures led to the development of secondary dissolution pores. • Emergence duration determines the reservoir quality of subaerially exposed strata.
