9. CEP control of multiphoton ionization using shaper-generated variable frequency ratio bichromatic fields

Abstract

We demonstrate CEP control of the directional photoemission from multiphoton ionization (MPI) of xenon atoms using (7ω:8ω) bichromatic fields whose frequency ratio is tailored to the order of the MPI process. The bichromatic fields are generated by white light supercontinuum polarization pulse shaping. In the experiment, we observe a CEP-sensitive lateral asymmetry of up to 70%. The CEP sensitivity arises from interference of opposite parity continuum states coupled to the ground state by a different number of photons.

Polarization-shaped two-color pump-probe sequences are generated by spectral amplitude and phase modulation of a femtosecond input pulse and used to excite SOWPs in the potassium $4p$ fine-structure doublet. By selecting different spectral bands for pump and probe pulse, we achieve interference-free detection of the spatiotemporal SOWP dynamics. Using tomographic techniques, we reconstruct the three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distribution (3D-ED) created by the probe pulse. Time-resolved measurement of the 3D-ED reveals the orbital realignment dynamics induced by spin–orbit interaction in the neutral atom.

Abstract

Bichromatic polarization-shaped femtosecond laser pulses are used to control three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions (3D-EDs) from resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization of potassium atoms. The light fields consisting of two spectral bands with different ellipticity are produced using an ultrafast polarization pulse shaper equipped with a custom polarizer in the Fourier plane. The tomographically reconstructed 3D-EDs from ionization with counterrotating circularly or orthogonal linearly polarized bichromatic laser pulses show different angular momentum superposition states at four distinct photoelectron energies. The analysis of the measured 3D-EDs reveals that the underlying physical mechanism is based on the interplay of ionization pathway selection via quantum mechanical selection rules for optical transitions and intrapulse frequency mixing of the spectral bands with different ellipticity.

18. Chapter 3: Bichromatic Control of Free Electron Wave Packets.

Abstract

We report on recent developments in coherent control of ultrafast photoionization dynamics with ultrashort polarization-shaped bichromatic pulse sequences. In the experiments, a novel pulse shaping scheme for the generation of Bichromatic Carrier-Envelope phase-stable Polarization-tailored Supercontinuum (BiCEPS) fields is combined with high-resolution photoelectron tomography to create, manipulate and reconstruct three-dimensional free electron wave packets from atomic multiphoton ionization. Examples for coherent control with bichromatic polarization-shaped pulse sequences are presented, including the generation of unusual angular momentum superposition states, carrier-envelope phase control of directional photoemission, the creation and manipulation of photoelectron vortices and electron wave packets with odd-numbered rotational symmetry as well as studies on ultrafast Rydberg and spin-orbit wave packet dynamics. 21. Ultrashort polarization-tailored bichromatic fields from a CEP-stable white light supercontinuum

Abstract

We apply ultrafast polarization shaping to an ultrabroadband carrier envelope phase (CEP) stable white light supercontinuum to generate polarization-tailored bichromatic laser fields of low-order frequency ratio. The generation of orthogonal linearly and counter-rotating circularly polarized bichromatic fields is achieved by introducing a composite polarizer in the Fourier plane of a 4 f polarization shaper. The resulting Lissajous- and propeller-type polarization profiles are characterized experimentally by cross-correlation trajectories. The scheme provides full control over all bichromatic parameters and allows for individual spectral phase modulation of both colors. Shaper-based CEP control and the generation of tailored bichromatic fields is demonstrated. These bichromatic CEP-stable polarization-shaped ultrashort laser pulses provide a versatile class of waveforms for coherent control experiments.

Abstract

Die Kontrolle molekularer Prozesse auf ihren natürlichen ultrakurzen Zeitskalen ist ein zentrales Ziel von Chemikern und Physikern gleichermaßen. Heute eröffnen hochentwickelte ultraschnelle Lasertechnologien ungeahnte Möglichkeiten steuernd in den Verlauf chemischer Reaktionen einzugreifen. Die effiziente Kontrolle photochemischer Ereignisse gelingt durch Manipulation der Valenzelektronen in Molekülen mittels intensiver Femtosekunden-Laserpulse. Ausgereifte Techniken zur Formung dieser Pulse mit zuvor unerreichter Präzision ermöglichen die effektive Anpassung des Laserfeldes an die schnelle Elektronendynamik. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den physikalischen Mechanismen hinter der Starkfeld-Kontrolle kohärenter elektronischer Prozesse. In einem intuitiven Bild des induzierten elektrischen Dipols im treibenden Laserfeld werden Szenarien zur gezielten Steuerung der Starkfeld-Wechselwirkung abgeleitet. Dabei werden etablierte Mechanismen aus der NMR ins optische Regime übertragen sowie neuartige Kontrollschemata entwickelt und vorgestellt. Durch Anwendung auf die Kontrolle gekoppelter Elektronen- und Kerndynamik eines neutralen Moleküls gelingt es, die elektronische Anregung selektiv, effizient und ultraschnell zwischen unterschiedlichen gebundenen Zielzuständen zu schalten.

Abstract

We present a novel concept for the generation of ultrashort polarization-shaped bichromatic laser fields. The scheme utilizes a 4f polarization pulse shaper based on a liquid crystal spatial light modulator for independent amplitude and phase modulation of femtosecond laser pulses. By choice of either a conventional (p) or a composite (p-s) polarizer in the Fourier plane, the shaper setup enables the generation of parallel linearly and orthogonal linearly polarized bichromatic fields. Additional use of a γ/4 wave plate behind the setup yields co-rotating and counter-rotating circularly polarized bichromatic fields. The scheme allows to independently control the spectral amplitude, phase and polarization profile of the output fields, offering an enormous versatility of bichromatic waveforms.
