2. The Question Asking Skills of Preschool Teacher Candidates: Turkey and America Example

Abstract

Question asking is an important skill that teachers should use during class activities. Teachers need to get used to this ability while they are teacher candidates. The aim of this research is to identify the cognitive taxonomy and the structure of the questions asked by the candidate of preschool teachers and to compare the questioning skills of preschool teacher candidates in Michigan, USA and Turkey. The participants were selected from people who are both senior students and have preschool teacher experience. The participant teacher candidates of the present study have stated that they have not taken a questioning skill course, but the topic was taught in some of the courses. In this research, we used document review, a kind of qualitative research technique. Document evaluation was based on question formation forms. The candidate of preschool teachers were asked to write questions on "Question Formation Form". The questions asked by participant teacher candidates were analyzed and the percent frequency tables of the questions are given. As a result, we observed that teacher candidates have mainly asked questions in the first three levels of the taxonomy. Our results also showed that the teacher candidates from Turkey have rarely asked application questions and candidates from the US have usually asked comprehension questions. When examining structure of the questions, the teacher candidates in Turkey asked more than twice as many close-ended questions than the teacher candidates in the US.

Candidates received a one-time invitation by mail, including a questionnaire on possible risk factors and comorbidities. Abdominal aortic outer-to-outer diameter and ankle-brachial index were measured by the screening team. Participants were allocated into three groups: non-, sub- and aneurysmal aorta. Written information on recommended follow-up regime was given to participants with an aortic diameter ≥ 25 mm. Univariate and multivariate analyses of potential risk factors were performed, in addition to descriptive analyses and significance testing.Results: In total, 19,328 were invited, 13,215 men were screened, of which 12,822 accepted inclusion in the study. Aortic diameter was registered for 12,810 participants and 330 men had aortic diameter ≥ 30 mm, giving a prevalence of AAA of 2.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.31– 2.86). We identified 4 independent risk factors for AAA: smoking (OR = 3.64, 95% CI 2.90– 4.58), hypertension (OR = 1.87, 95% CI 1.49– 2.35), BMI > 30 (OR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.00– 1.03), and diabetes mellitus (OR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.35– 0.79), the latter showing an inverse association with AAA growth. A subgroup of 862 men with aortic diameters 25– 29 mm had a significantly higher prevalence of BMI > 25, smoking and family history of AAA, compared to participants with aortic diameter < 25 mm.Conclusion: Among the participants in this study, the prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms was 2.6%. Abstract

Drought stress is the major constraint to rice (Oryza sativa L.) production and yield stability in rainfed ecosystems. Identifying genomic regions contributing to drought resistance will help develop rice cultivars suitable for rainfed regions through molecular marker assisted breeding. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to plant water stress indicators, phenology and production traits under irrigated and drought stress conditions were mapped by means of a doubled-haploid (DH) population of 154 rice lines from the cross CT9993-5-10-1-M/ IR62266-42-6-2. The DH lines were subjected to water stress before anthesis in three field experiments at two locations. The DH lines showed significant variation for plant water stress indicators, phenology, plant biomass, yield and yield components under irrigated control and water stress. A total of 47 QTLs were identified for various plant water stress indicators, phenology, and production traits under control and water stress conditions in the field, which individually explained 5 to 59% of the phenotype variation. A region was identified on chromosome 4 that harbored major QTLs for plant height, grain yield, and number of grains per panicle under drought stress. By comparing the coincidence of QTLs with specific traits, we also genetically dissected the nature of association of root traits and capacity for osmotic adjustment with rice production under drought. Root traits had positive correlations with yield and yield components under drought stress. This study demonstrated that the region RG939-RG476-RG214 on chromosome 4 identified for root-related drought resistance component QTLs also had pleiotropic effects on yield traits under stress. Abstract

The incidence of milk leakage (ML) after dry-off (DO) and related risk factors was studied in 1,175 dairy cows from 41 commercial herds in 8 European countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Milk leakage was assessed twice for 30 s each during 3 visits at 20 to 24 h, 30 to 34 h, and 48 to 52 h after DO. Information related to dry-cow management and udder health was collected at herd and cow level, including individual somatic cell count (ISCC) from test-day controls and occurrence of clinical mastitis cases from DO until 30 d in lactation. Mixed-effect logistic regression analyses were used to identify possible risk factors for ML and to study the association between ML and new intramammary infections. Intramammary infections were defined as clinical mastitis cases during the dry period and in the first 30 d in lactation or a rise in ISCC from before to after the dry period (threshold: 200,000 cells/mL) or both. Milk leakage was observed in 24.5% of the cows between 20 and 52 h after DO, where the herd incidence varied between 0.0 and 77.8%. The reduction in number of milkings in the weeks before DO had statistically significant effect on the ML incidence. When the milking frequency was reduced from 3 times/d to 2 or maintained at twice a day, cows had 11 (95% CI = 3.43–35.46) or 9 (95% CI = 1.85–48.22) times higher odds of leaking milk, respectively, compared with cows where the milking frequency was reduced from twice to once a day. Also, the milk production 24 h before DO was associated with ML incidence. Hence, cows with a milk production between 13 and 21 L or above 21 L had 2.3 (95% CI = 1.48–3.53) and 3.1 (95% CI = 1.79–5.3) times higher odds of leaking milk, respectively, compared with cows with a milk production below 13 L. Abstract

Breeding Black-legged Kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla survived at a mean annual rate of 0.926 in four years at a colony in Alaska. Survival rates observed in sexed males (0.930) and females (0.937) did not differ significantly. The rate of return among nonbreeding Kittiwakes (0.839) was lower than that of known breeders, presumably because more nonbreeders moved away from the study plots where they were marked. Individual nonbreeders frequented sites up to 5 km apart on the same island, while a few established breeders moved up to 2.5 km between years. Mate retention in breeding Kittiwakes averaged 69% in three years. Among pairs that split, the cause of changing mates was about equally divided between death (46%) and divorce (54%). Average adult life expectancy was estimated at 13.0 years. Combined with annual productivity averaging 0.17 chick per nest, the observed survival was insufficient for maintaining population size. Rather, an irregular decline observed in the study colony since 1981 is consistent with the model of a closed population with little or no recruitment. Compared to their Atlantic counterparts, Pacific Kittiwakes have low productivity and high survival. The question arises whether differences reflect phenotypic plasticity or genetically determined variation in population parameters.

Abstract

The preparatory work for reading and writing in preschool education is significant in terms of the development of children’s reading and writing skills. The aim of this research is to identify competence perception about preparatory work for reading and writing preschool teachers of the working in primary schools of Ministry of National Education. The universe of the research is consist of the preschool teachers working in preschools in Central districts of Ankara City. Tha sample of the research is consist of 173 preschool teachers working in 65 primary schools in 8 central districts of Ankara City. The data of the research was collected via “ The Scale of Identfying Preschool Teachers’ Competence Perception about Preparatory Works for Reading and Writing” developed by Alisinanoğlu and Bay (2007). According to research results, we conclude that there is no significant difference in their competence perception in terms of their age and the type of the school they graduated from ( p>0.05), on the other hand, there is significant difference according to their vocational seniority. We have made suggestions according to the research results., Okul öncesi eğitimde yer alan okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmaları, çocuklarda okuma ve yazma becerilerinin gelişimi açısından önemlidir. Araştırmanın amacı Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı’na bağlı ilköğretim okullarının anasınıflarında görev yapan öğretmenlerin, okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmalarına ilişkin yeterlilik algılarının belirlenmesidir. Araştırmanın evrenini; Ankara ili merkez ilçelerindeki okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarında görev yapmakta olan öğretmenler oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Ankara’nın merkez sekiz ilçesindeki 65 ilköğretim okulunda görev yapmakta olan 173 anasınıfı öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri Alisinanoğlu ve Bay (2007) tarafından geliştirilen “Ana Sınıfı Öğretmenlerinin Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarına İlişkin Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeği” ile toplanmıştır. Abstract

Araştırmanın amacı, Okul Öncesi Eğitimde Okul Aile İşbirliği Ölçeği nin geçerlilik ve güvenirliğini ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu , Gazi Üniversitesi Gazi Eğitim Fakültesi İlköğretim Bölümü Okul Öncesi Öğretmenliğinde ve Gazi Üniversitesi Mesleki Eğitim Fakültesi Çocuk Gelişimi ve Eğitimi Bölümü Okul Önces i Öğretmenliğinde öğrenim gören 3. ve 4. sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır (n229). Ölçeğin geliştirilmesi aşamasında kaynak taraması yapılarak 52 maddelik taslak form oluşturulmuş, kapsam geçerliliği için uzman görüşü alınmıştır. Yapılan kapsam geçerliği sonuçlarına göre ölçeğin 45 maddelik deneme fo rmu oluşturulmuştur. Ö lçeğin yapı geçerlilik ve güvenirlilik analizleri kapsamında açımlayıc ı (explanatory) faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin geçerlik çalışmasında Screee Plot eğrisi 4 faktörlü yapıyı göstermiş ve madde yükü .50 den küçük olan maddeler atılmıştır. Açıklanam toplam varyans %63tür. Ölçeğin boyutlarının ve tamamının güvenilirliklerini ölçmek amacıyla Cronbach Alfa güvenirlik istatistiği yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin genelinin güvenirliği için hesaplanan Cronbach Alpha iç tutarlılık katsayısı .93 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Analiz sonucunda 21 maddeden ve dört faktörden oluşan Okul Öncesi Eğitimde Okul Aile İşbirliği Ölçeği elde edilmiştir. The purpose of this study is to reveal the validity and reliability of the " School Parent Cooperation Scale in Pre -School Education". This study was participated 3rd and 4th grade students of Early Ch ildhood Education and Child Development Departments at Gazi University (n229). During the development of the scale, literature review was performed and a draft form was created. Some experts were consulted for the validity of scope. The 45 -item experiment form was formed according to the scope validity results. The validity and reliability analysis of the scale was performed by explanatory factor analysis. The validity study has shown that Screen Plot curve has 4 -factor structures and the items that have s maller than .50 item load were discarded. The Cronbach's Alpha reliability statistics was done for measuring the reliability of the scale and its dimensions. Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient, the indicator of the scale reliability, was calculated as .93. As a result of these analyses School Parent Cooperation Scale in Pre -School Education was consisted of 21 items and 4 factors.

Abstract

Araştırmanın amacı ebeveynlerin, okul öncesi dönemindeki çocukların dil ve okuryazarlık gelişimindeki rolünü ve çocuklarına kitap okuma süreci ile amacına ilişkin inançlarını belirlemek için D. DeBaryshe ve Binder (1994) tarafından geliştirilmiş, orijinal adı "Parent Reading Belief Inventory" olan "Ebeveyn Okuma İnanç Ölçeği"nin Türkçeye uyarlamasını yapmaktır. Bu amaca ulaşabilmek için öncelikle ölçeğin dil uzmanları tarafından çeviri işlemleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sonrasında ölçeğin kültürel, dilsel, anlamsal uygunluğu ile ilgili dil ve alan uzmanlarının görüşleri alınmıştır. Türkçe formu oluşturulduktan sonra ölçeğin faktör yapısının Türk kültürüne uyumlu olup olmadığına bakmak amacıyla 420 anneye uygulanmış, elde edilen verilerle Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA) yapılmıştır. Orijinal ölçek yedi faktörden (Öğretimin Etkililiği, Olumlu Etki, Sözel Katılım, Okuma Yönergesi, Bilgi Kaynağı, Kaynaklar, Çevresel Etki) ve toplam 42 maddeden oluşmaktadır. Ancak öğretimin etkililiği ve okuma yönergesi boyutlarında yer alan iki maddenin ölçekteki t değerlerleri düşük çıkmıştır. Bu maddeler uzman görüşü alınarak faktör yapıları değiştirilmeden çıkarılmış ve istatistiki işlem tekrar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan ikinci DFA 40 madde ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan işlem sonrasında bütün maddelerin yedi alt boyutta anlamlı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Hesaplanan uyum indeksleri 2/sd=5,72 CFI=0.90, NNFI=0, 90, NFI=0,90 IFI=0,90 olarak bulunmuştur. Ölçeğin faktörleri arasındaki ilişkiyi gösteren tüm katsayıların yeterli düzeyde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ölçeğin alt boyutlarına ilişkin güvenirlik katsayılarının .45 -.87 arasında değiştiği, ölçeğin toplamına ilişkin güvenirlik katsayısının .79 olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda elde edilen bulgular Ebeveyn Okuma İnanç Ölçeği'nin Türkiye'de geçerli ve güvenilir olarak kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir The purpose of the study is to adapt the Parent Reading Belief Inventory, which was developed by D. DeBaryshe and Binder (1994) to define the beliefs of parents of pre-school children language and literacy development, related to their children’s book reading processes and aims, to Turkish. In order to reach this aim, initially the inventory was translated by language experts. Later, the views of language and the related fields’ experts regarding the inventory’s cultural, linguistic and semantic appropriateness were gathered. After forming the Turkish version of the inventory, to find out whether it is appropriate for Turkish culture or not, it was applied to 420 mothers, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied with the collected data. The original inventory consists of seven factors (Teaching Effectiveness, Positive Effect, Verbal Participation, Reading Instruction, Source of Information, Resources, and Environmental Effect) and 42 items. However, t-score of two items in teaching effectiveness and reading instruction were low. By consulting the experts’ opinions, those items were taken out of the inventory without changing its factor structures and the statistical analysis was done again. The second CFA was done with 40 items. It was indicated that all the items in seven sub-dimensions were significant. The calculated fit index was found as 2/sd=5,72 CFI=0.90, NNFI=0, 90, NFI=0,90 IFI=0,90. The reliability co-efficient of the relation between the factors was found as acceptable. The reliability co-efficient of the sub-dimensions of the inventory was found between .45 - .87 and the total reliability co-efficient was .79. The results of the study indicate that the Parent Reading Belief Inventory can be used as a valid and reliable inventory in Turkey

40. Soru Sorma Becerisi Öğretiminin Okul Öncesi Öğretmenlerinin Sorularının Yapısı Üzerine Etkisi

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify types of pre-school teachers’ questions, and to investigate the effect of teaching questioning skills on types of pre-school teachers’ questions. In this before-and-after case study, 2 teachers teaching 5-year-olds were involved based on criterion sampling. After pre-observation, “Teaching Questioning Skills Program” was implemented. Then, post-observation was done. We found out that while 6.9% of the questions asked by Teacher A were open-ended beforehand, 34.5% of those were open-ended after program implementation while 30.4% of the questions asked by Teacher B were open ended beforehand, 60.8% of those were open-ended after program implementation. All in all, pre-school teachers asked a great number of closed-ended questions. However, after program implementation, the number of open-ended questions increased, Araştırmanın amacı, okul öncesi öğretmenlerinin sorularının yapısının ortaya konulması ve soru sorma becerisi öğretiminin öğretmenlerin sorularının yapısı üzerine etkisinin incelenmesidir. Araştırma, nitel araştırma çeşidi olan “Öncesi-Sonrası Örnek Olay Çalışması”na göre tasarlanmıştır. Araştırmada, amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden biri olan kolay ulaşılabilir durum örneklemeye göre anaokulu, ölçüt örneklemeye göre de 5 yaş grubu 2 öğretmen katılımcı olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada öğretmenlerin ön gözlemleri yapıldıktan sonra bir hafta ve 12 saatten oluşan “Soru Sorma Becerisi Öğretim Programı” uygulanmış ve daha sonra öğretmenlerin son gözlemleri yapılmıştır. Öncesi ve sonrası ile örnek olayın bütünüyle ortaya konulabilmesi için betimsel analiz yapılmıştır. Öğretmen A’nın soru sorma becerisi öğretimi öncesinde sorularının %6.9’u açık uçlu, öğretim sonrasında ise bunun %34.5 olduğu, Öğretmen B’nin öğretim öncesinde sorularının %30.4’ü açık uçlu iken öğretim sonrasında ise bunun %60.8 olduğu görülmüştür. Araştırmanın sonucunda, öncesinde öğretmenlerin ağırlıklı olarak kapalı uçlu soru sordukları, öğretim sonrasında ise açık uçlu sorularının oranlarında artış sağladıkları görülmüştür.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop “The Scale for Determining Preschool Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Perception About Preparation for Reading and Writing Activities” in order to determine teachers’ self-efficacy perception about preparation for reading and writing activities. The sample of the study consisted of 400 teachers working at the preschool educational institutions in the 8 central districts of Ankara. Firstly, explanatory factor analyses and item analyses and then confirmatory factor analyses have been carried out for validity and reliability analyses of the scale. Total variance of the scale was 65.7%. The internal consistency of Cronbach coefficient Alpha used for the validity of the scale was calculated as .89. At the end of the analyses, “The Scale for Determining Preschool Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Perception About Preparation for Reading and Writing Activities” that consists of 33 items was acquired., Araştırmanın amacı, öğretmenlerin, okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmalarına ilişkin yeterlilik algılarının belirlenmesi için “Okul Öncesi Öğretmenlerinin Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarına İlişkin Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeği”ni geliştirmektir. Araştırmanın örneklemini, Ankara ili merkez 8 ilçesine bağlı okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarında görev yapan 400 öğretmen oluşturmuştur. Ölçeğin geçerlilik ve güvenirlilik analizleri kapsamında öncelikle açıklayıcı (explanatory) faktör analizi ve madde analizi çalışmalarına yer verilmiş; son olarak doğrulayıcı (confirmatory) faktör analizi çalışmaları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada, Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı'na bağlı ilköğretim okullarının anasınıflarında görev yapan öğretmenlerin, okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmalarına ilişkin yeterlilik algılarının belirlenmesi, genel amaç olarak belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmalarına ilişkin yeterlilik algılarının öğretmenlerin yaş, mezun olduğu okul ve mesleki kıdem durumlarına göre farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığı incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın evrenini Ankara ili merkez ilçelerinde ilköğretim okullarının bünyesindeki anasınıflarında görev yapmakta olan ana sınıfı öğretmenleri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada öğretmenlerin Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarında Öğretmen Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeğinin geçerlilik güvenirlilik çalışması için örneklem Ankara ili merkez ilçelerden Yenimahalle, Çankaya, Etimesgut, Sincan, Altındağ, Keçiören, Mamak ilçelerine bağlı okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarından rondom tekniğiyle 468 öğretmen olarak belirlenmiştir. Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarında Öğretmen Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeğini oluşturmak için literatür taraması yapılarak 82 madde oluşturulmuştur. Ölçek bu haliyle 6 alan uzmanının görüşüne sunulmuştur. Uzman görüşleri alındıktan sonra likert tipi derecelendirme ölçeğine göre uzmanların her bir maddeye verdikleri puanlar toplanmış ve çıkan değer uzman sayısına bölünmüştür. Madde puanı dördün altında olan 11 madde ölçekten çıkarılmıştır. 71 maddeden oluşan ölçeğin geçerlilik güvenirlilik çalışması yapılmıştır. Belirlenen örneklem grubuna Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarında Öğretmen Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Ancak 400 öğretmen ölçeği doldurmuştur. Diğer öğretmenler veri kaybıdır. Ölçeğin SPSS 13.0 paket programında faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin geçerlik çalışmasında Screee Plot eğrisi 8 faktörlü yapıyı göstermiş ve madde yükü .50 den küçük olan maddeler atılmıştır. Açıklanam toplam varyans %65.7'dir. Ölçeğin genelinin güvenirliği için hesaplanan Cronbach Alpha iç tutarlılık katsayısı .89 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Analiz sonucunda 33 maddeden oluşan Ana Sınıfı Öğretmenlerinin Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarına İlişkin Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeği elde edilmiştir. Ankara İl Millî Eğitim Müdürlüğü tarafından sekiz merkez ilçeden 65 ilköğretim okulunda uygulama izni verdiğinden dolayı; Ankara ilinde Yenimahalle, Çankaya, Keçiören, Etimesgut, Altındağ, Sincan, Gölbaşı, Mamak' merkez ilçelerindeki ilköğretim okullarının bünyelerinde çalışan 196 ana sınıfı öğretmeni, okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmalarına ilişkin yeterlilik algılarını belirlemek için, örneklem grubunu oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Kişisel bilgi formu ve araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen Ana Sınıfı Öğretmenlerinin Okuma Yazmaya Hazırlık Çalışmalarına İlişkin Yeterlilik Algılarını Belirleme Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada 173 ana sınıfı öğretmeni ölçeği doldurmuştur. Diğer öğretmenler veri kaybıdır. Araştırma bulgularının yorumlanmasında 0.05 anlamlılık düzeyi esas alınmıştır. Araştırmada anasınıflarında görev yapan öğretmenlerin okuma yazmaya hazırlık çalışmalarına ilişkin yeterlilik algılarında öğretmenin yaşının, mesleki kıdeminin ve mezun olduğu okul türünün anlamlı bir farklılık yaratmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır (P>0.05). Bulgular ışığında öğretmenlere, ilgili kurum ve kuruluşlara gerekli önerilerde bulunulmuştur. In the resaarch, that the determination of the ministry of National Education Kindergarden Teachers sufficiency concerning preparation studies for reading and writing has been determined the general aim. Also, weather there are differencies according to the teachers concerning preparation studies for reading and writing. The kindergarden teachers who work in the primary schools of central towns of Ankara constitute the universe of the research. The samples were determined as 468 teachers by rondom technique from pre-schools of Yenimahalle, Çankaya, Keçiören, Etimesgut, Altındağ, Sincan and Mamak central towns of Ankara city fort he validity safety study of teachers sufficiency determining scale in preparation study for reading and writing ın the research. By literature scanning, 82 items were determined in order to constitue Teachers Sufficiency Determining Scale in Preparation Study For Reading And Writings. Six experts opinions were taken fort the scale. After taken experts opinions, the marks which the experts gave to each item were addet according to likert style degrecing scale and the result was divided by the number experts. Eleven items of which item value is below four were omitted. The validitiy safety study of scale which consists of 71 items was done, teachers sufficiency determining scale in preparation study for reading and writing was applied to the determined sample group. Other teachers are missed data. The compenent analyzing of the scale was done in SPSS 13.0 package programme scree plot bent shows the 8 factorial structure in validity study of scale and the items values were smaller than .50 were amitted. Abstract

This study was conducted to identify and map the quantitative trait locus (QTL) controlling Al tolerance in rice using molecular markers. A population of 171 F(6) recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross of Oryza sativa (IR64), the Al susceptible parent, and Oryza rufipogon, the Al tolerant parent, was evaluated for Al tolerance using a nutrient solution with and without 40 ppm of active Al(+3). A genetic map, consisting of 151 molecular markers covering 1,755 cM with an average distance of 11.6 cM between loci, was constructed. Nine QTLs were dentified including one for root length under non-stress conditions (CRL), three for root length under Al stress (SRL) and five for relative root length (RRL). O. rufipogon contributed favorable alleles for each of the five QTLs for RRL, which is a primary parameter for Al tolerance, and individually they explained 9.0-24.9% of the phenotypic variation. Epistatic analysis revealed that CRL was conditioned by an epistatic effect, whereas SRL and RRL were controlled by additive effects. Comparative genetic analysis showed that QTLs for RRL, which mapped on chromosomes 1 and 9, appear to be consistent among different rice populations. Interestingly, a major QTL for RRL, which explained 24.9% of the phenotypic variation, was found on chromosome 3 of rice, which is conserved across cereal species. These results indicate the possibilities to use marker-assisted selection and pyramiding QTLs for enhancing Al tolerance in rice. Positional cloning of such QTLs introgressed from O. rufipogon will provide a better understanding of the Al tolerance mechanism in rice and the evolutionary genetics of plant adaptation to acid-soil conditions across cereal species.

Research efforts have often targeted specific EW applications and operational environments to facilitate the transition of the technology, rather than develop cross-domain functionality.
