Metamorphism in the lower Witwatersrand Supergroup exposed in the Vredefort Dome has previously been proposed to be related to elevated heat flow linked to the 2.06 Ga Bushveld magmatic event; however, there are no unambiguous chronological data to confirm this timing. Microtextural and mineral compositional analysis of a garnet-bearing metapelite in the northwestern collar of the Vredefort Dome suggests at least two metamorphic events with distinctly different P-T conditions preceding the Dome-forming meteorite impact at 2.02 Ga. THERMOCALC mineral equilibrium calculations yield P-T conditions of 500°C, 3.1 kbar for the M1 mineral assemblage garnet1-plagioclase-muscovitebiotite-chlorite-ilmenite. Thin, discontinuous, garnet2 overgrowths on the garnet1 porphyroblasts define a subsequent, M2, event with P-T conditions of 530°C, 5 kbar. Garnet Sm-Nd chronology yields an isochron age of 2 796.0 ± 1.5 Ma, indicating an early Ventersdorp (Klipriviersberg) timing of M1 metamorphism. Although the M2 garnet overgrowths are volumetrically too small to date, the calculated M2 pressure is consistent with the predicted overburden thickness above the lower Witwatersrand Supergroup during emplacement of the Bushveld Complex. While elevated, the M2 apparent geotherm (30°C/km) is significantly lower than the M1 apparent geotherm (46°C/km); however, thermal modelling suggests both events benefitted from local perturbations caused by contemporaneous sill emplacement. Our results thus show that the initial garnet-forming, mid-amphibolite facies metamorphism in the collar of the Vredefort Dome is not related to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, but rather to the early stages of magmatism associated with the Ventersdorp Large Igneous Province (LIP). The Inyoni shear zone represents an important tectonic boundary between (i) the ca. 3.45 Ga high-pressure amphibolite facies, granite-greenstone domain south of the Barberton greenstone belt, termed the Stolzburg terrane, and (ii) the ca. 3.29 to 3.23 Ga rocks of the trondhjemitic Badplaas pluton to the west. The Stolzburg terrane is separated from the greenschist facies rocks of the rest of the Barberton greenstone belt by the Komati fault, which records >10 km uplift of the Stolzburg terrane relative to the lower-grade rocks of the greenstone belt at ca. 3.23 Ga. A number of studies within the Stolzburg terrane have documented high-pressure amphibolite facies metamorphism that occurred concurrently with exhumation, with the lowest apparent geothermal gradients documented in the Inyoni shear zone, where strong constraints on the age of metamorphism are most limited. In addition, different studies on Inyoni metamorphism have produced significantly different temperature estimates. This study utilizes garnet Sm-Nd geochronology in combination with P-T modelling to directly date the metamorphism and re-evaluate the P-T conditions of the Inyoni shear zone. Two petrologically distinct samples produce similar P-T evolutions. A heterogeneous sample with both garnet-bearing and garnet-absent domains gives up-P evolutions reaching conditions of 550 to 675°C and 7 to 10 kbar, whereas a homogenous sample containing garnet and clinopyroxene produces a similar dominantly up-P evolution reaching peak conditions of 650°C and 8 to 10 kbar. Sm-Nd garnet ages of 3 201.6 ± 4.7 Ma (MSWD = 1.02) and 3 200.3 ± 5.3 Ma (MSWD = 0.44) were obtained from two samples of the homogenous garnet and clinopyroxene-bearing amphibolite. The Sm-Nd garnet geochronology provides accurate ages for the metamorphism of the Inyoni shear zone, with age results suggesting activity on the Inyoni shear zone may have continued after the regional metamorphism at ca. 3.23 Ga previously established by zircon U-Pb geochronology. However, 147Sm decay constant uncertainty leaves open the possibility that Inyoni garnet growth could have coincided with the previously recognized 3.23 Ga regional metamorphism. The Fosdick migmatite-granite complex in West Antarctica records evidence for two high-temperature metamorphic events, the first during the Devonian-Carboniferous and the second during the Cretaceous. The conditions of each high-temperature metamorphic event, both of which involved melting and multiple melt-loss events, are investigated using phase equilibria modelling during successive melt-loss events, microstructural observations and mineral chemistry. In situ SHRIMP monazite and TIMS Sm-Nd garnet ages are integrated with these results to constrain the timing of the two events. In areas that preferentially preserve the Devonian-Carboniferous (M1) event, monazite grains in leucosomes and core domains of monazite inclusions in Cretaceous cordierite yield an age of c. 346 Ma, which is interpreted to record the timing of monazite growth during peak M1 metamorphism (∼820-870 °C, 7.5-11.5 kbar) and the formation of garnet-sillimanite-biotite-melt-bearing assemblages. Slightly younger monazite spot ages between c. 331 and 314 Ma are identified from grains located in fractured garnet porphyroblasts, and from inclusions in plagioclase that surround relict garnet and in matrix biotite. These ages record the growth of monazite during garnet breakdown associated with cooling from peak M1 conditions. The Cretaceous (M2) overprint is recorded in compositionally homogeneous monazite grains and rim domains in zoned monazite grains. This monazite yields a protracted range of spot ages with a dominant population between c. 111 and 96 Ma. Rim domains of monazite inclusions in cordierite surrounding garnet and in coarse-grained poikiloblasts of cordierite yield a weighted mean age of c. 102 Ma, interpreted to constrain the age of cordierite growth. TIMS Sm-Nd ages for garnet are similar at 102-99 Ma. Mineral equilibria modelling of the residual protolith composition after Carboniferous melt loss and removal of inert M1 garnet constrains M2 conditions to ∼830-870 °C and ∼6-7.5 kbar. The modelling results suggest that there was growth and resorption of garnet during the M2 event, which would facilitate overprinting of M1 compositions during the M2 prograde metamorphism. Measured garnet compositions and Sm-Nd diffusion modelling of garnet in the migmatitic gneisses suggest resetting of major elements and the Sm-Nd system during the Cretaceous M1 overprint. The c. 102-99 Ma garnet Sm-Nd 'closure' ages correspond to cooling below 700 °C during the rapid exhumation of the Fosdick migmatite-granite complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
