Abstract

In "Feminist Practices: Writing Around the Kitchen Table," Helene Frichot, Katja Grillner, and Julieanna Preston describe the kinds of architectural and intellectual practice that can emerge in the informal space of talking at the kitchen table–many voices sharing in formal and informal registers in mutual recognition and allyship. It is a mode of collaborative practice that the Aarhus School of Architecture's Diversity Collaborative has pursued as we formed an activist voice in architectural academia and set about different activities from advocacy within our institution to an year-long series of panel discussions with an international slate of guests. We believe that our collaborative is one model of a polymorphous, multi-faceted practice based on mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to imagining a radically inclusive architectural practice. We set out to find new intersections and forms of ally-ship between a diverse group of collaborators, and as we invite students, architects, academics, and activists into dialogue within our community. In this text, we will again stage a conversation with one another in order to talk about the ways our collaboration has been successful, and also the ways we want to become better going forward. We ask, is our collaboration one model for the architect of the future? And, how do we imagine an architect that builds for inclusion, and fights against discrimination of any kind?

Abstract

This article examines the idea of Radical Inclusivity in the context of architecture through the perspective of maintenance and care. It traces the origins of Radical Inclusivity to the religious philosophy of Origen and the architectural experiments of Paolo Soleri inspired by the idea of the Omega Point by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The rejection of waste and growth through density and complexity of interactions facilitated by architecture combined with the understanding of buildings as dynamic and ever-changing entities is the core of Radical Inclusivity foregrounding time and contextuality as crucial layers of understanding of architecture. In this temporal perspective, maintenance and care are not separated from architecture, but are integral to its production from its conception in architectural practice, through the building process, then the maintenance of the finished building, and finally to its end-of-life care, disposal, and reuse of its remains. Using the lens of time, the article positions the maintenance and care in the context of Hannah Arendt’s division between work and labor revealing hidden biases in the role of the architect and discusses its implications on the production of architecture from a feminist perspective. Using examples of maintenance in the art of Mierle Laderman Ukeles and architecture, this paper argues for a radically inclusive architecture, where the inclusivity principle is applied in the whole process of the production of architecture, including architectural education, design, and construction, and is extended to maintenance as well as working conditions of all actors involved.

Abstract

Research has confirmed that natural environments can offer many health benefits. However, a large group in society, people with mobility disabilities, are often hindered from gaining these benefits. Enhancing physical accessibility to natural environments is important, but in our opinion, not enough. This position paper addresses the importance of incorporating social inclusiveness in accessibility solutions in natural environments. We present a framework based on theories on affordances and behaviour settings that can guide the design process of inclusive, accessible, natural, and health-promoting environments for people with mobility disabilities. The development of the framework is based on quantitative and qualitative results achieved from a several-year-long research project concerning the design and use of a forest trail for people with mobility disabilities. The framework allows for the integration of two key opposing factors: naturalness and accessibility. The framework also integrates the important and often overlooked factor of social inclusion when designing health-promoting natural environments. Landscape architects must understand their project sites as not only physical spaces, but also as social and emotional spaces. Implementing this framework can support our endeavours to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the Leave No One Behind agenda.

"This bilingual book was published following Vincent Meessen’s solo exhibitions Sire, je suis de l'ôtre pays at WIELS, Brussels (2016) and Omar en mai at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2018). The fourth volume in the artist’s publication series Prospectus, it is structured around four major installations that made up these shows (One.Two.Three, SIISIS, Wild Architect, and Cinéma Omarx), which are placed in parallel with newly commissioned essays by scholars Pedro Monaville, Stefano Collicelli Cagol and Ruth Baumeister, and an in-depth conversation between Tom McDonough and Vincent Meessen. At the heart of these contributions are the untold histories and unexpected topicality of the Situationist International, modernity’s last international avant-garde, which reconsidered so radically the relationships between art, politics and everyday life. Previously unpublished texts and reprints by Guy Debord, Lungela Diangani and Omar Blondin Diop explore in particular the Situationist International’s influence in black African countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal. Installation views of the exhibitions show furthermore how Meessen uses original documents in order to re-evaluate their political potential in the present.
