This qualitative study examined educational and career-related issues of 8 young adult survivors of childhood cancer. Participants described factors that detracted from academic performance and reported continued vigilance in regard to their health and level of stress. In regard to careers, the cancer experience led some to exclude certain professions from consideration but also gave rise to opportunities, areas of focus, or an interest in helping others. Implications for professionals in student affairs are considered.

Using consensual qualitative research methodology and being mindful of both challenges and successes, the authors explored diverse students' experiences with higher education. The authors used semistructured interviews with 7 students with racial/ethnic minority backgrounds to investigate the circumstances under which these students decided to attend college and experienced success. Multiple factors that were reported to contribute to students' college attendance and success emerged, including individual factors, psychological factors, social factors, and cultural/environmental factors.

This article discusses the use of oral histories as a teaching tool to increase knowledge and awareness about oppression and diversity. The authors describe how oral histories can provide a deeper understanding of historical events and psychological phenomena, as well as fill in gaps in traditional narratives. They provide examples of oral history collections and discuss strategies for providing context and making connections between the oral histories and course content. School counselors increasingly will encounter childhood cancer survivors. This article explains why the cure for cancer consists of more than the eradication of the disease and includes the amelioration of academic, career, personal, and social concerns. Drawing on the research literature, the article discusses different stages of cancer survivorship and possible ways that school counselors may advance a cure for cancer as they meet the needs and encourage the development of every student survivor.

In response to a mail survey, 53 nontraditional undergraduates provided information about their reasons for reentering college, the likelihood of using services for nontraditional students, and sources of social support. Participants reported career, self-improvement, and family issues as primary reasons for reentry. They reported they would be likely or very likely to use campus services, especially career counseling. More than 60% reported strong social support from family and friends.

The authors of an earlier article, which argued that the social skills deficits typically found in children with learning disabilities (LD) are largely due to the comorbidity of LD with psychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depressive disorder, respond to a critique that did not find this relationship for LD and depression.
