The effects of in ovo injection of L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) on tissue L-AA concentrations, systemic inflammation, plasma mineral concentrations, and tracheal histomorphology of Ross 708 broilers subjected to elevated atmospheric ammonia (NH3) levels after hatch were investigated. The four in ovo treatments included non-injected (control), saline-injected (control), or saline containing 12 or 25 mg of L-AA. The in ovo treatments were applied at 17 days of incubation by injecting a 100 μL volume of each pre-specified treatment into the amnion. At hatch, 12 male chicks were randomly allocated to each of the 12 replicate battery cages belonging to each treatment group. The cages were arranged in a randomized complete block design within a common room. All birds were exposed to 50 ppm of NH3 at 35 days of posthatch age (doa), and the concentration of NH3 in the room was recorded every 20 s. At 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 doa, one bird from each cage was arbitrarily selected and euthanized for determinations of liver and eye L-AA concentrations at 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 doa; plasma nitric oxide concentrations at 0, 14, 21, and 28 doa; and plasma calcium and trace mineral concentrations at 0 and 21 doa. Tracheal histomorphology evaluations were performed at 0, 21, and 28 doa. There were no significant treatment differences for plasma nitric oxide and mineral concentrations, and for liver and eye L-AA concentrations at each sampling timepoint. In ovo injection of either 12 or 25 mg of L-AA decreased tracheal attenuation incidence at 0 doa compared to the non-injected or saline-injected control groups. Furthermore, the percentage of mild tracheal inflammation scores was lower at 28 doa in response to the in ovo injection of 12 mg of L-AA compared to the non-injected or saline-injected control groups. These results indicate that in ovo injection of 12 mg of L-AA reduces tracheal inflammation in broilers subjected to elevated atmospheric NH3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An approximately 12‐year‐old female Vietnamese Pot‐Bellied Pig was presented to the Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine Food Animal Service for anorexia of 2 days duration. On physical examination, the patient appeared depressed and lethargic with significantly pale mucus membranes, open mouth breathing, and nostril flaring. On abdominal palpation, the abdomen was tense and uncomfortable. A complete blood count (CBC) and chemistry profile were performed. The CBC revealed significant anemia and mild leukocytosis characterized by mild neutrophilia with a left shift. Mast cells were rarely observed. Hematocrit = 8.1% (RI 22‐50), RBC = 1.25 × 106/μL (RI 3.6‐7.8), WBC = 19.85 × 103/μL (RI 5.2‐17.9), Neutrophils = 15.08 × 103/μL (RI 0‐11.4), and Bands = 0.993 × 103/μL (RI 0‐0.019). The chemistry profile was unremarkable with a mildly elevated BUN and slightly decreased total protein and albumin (BUN = 39 mg/dL [RI 4.2‐15.1], total protein = 6.2 g/dL [RI 6.6‐8.9], and albumin = 2.5 g/dL [RI 3.6‐5.0]). An abdominal ultrasound revealed numerous hypoechoic nodules diffusely scattered throughout the hepatic parenchyma. An FNA of one of the hepatic nodules was performed. A mild suppurative component and numerous variably granulated mast cells were observed. A presumptive cytologic diagnosis of mast cell tumor was made. A 9‐week‐old puppy with refractory seizures and a dome‐shaped head presented to the Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine Specialty Center for suspected hydrocephalus. Computerized tomography (CT) findings included transtentorial herniation and an intra‐axial mass with dystrophic mineralization. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed an increased nucleated cell count of 1100/μl (RI < 5/μl), erythrocyte count of 2.2 × 106/μl, and markedly increased microprotein of 1939 mg/dl (RI < 30 mg/dl). On cytologic examination of the CSF, numerous erythrophagocytic, and hemosiderin‐laden macrophages were observed, which indicated chronic active hemorrhage. Many neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes that contained numerous intracytoplasmic, pleomorphic, bright yellow crystals were observed. Considering the ongoing hemorrhage, the crystals were presumed to be hematoidin. A biopsy with histopathology was performed on the intra‐axial mass, and the results were consistent with a vascular hamartoma. We speculate that the formation of these crystals was related to the ongoing hemorrhage associated with the vascular hamartoma. Identification of these crystals may be useful to aid in the identification of chronic hemorrhage associated with vascular malformations or lesions within the central nervous system. Salivary gland neoplasia is uncommon in veterinary species and has rarely been reported in cattle. Adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and pleomorphic carcinoma have been described in the parotid gland of dairy cows. Here we describe a case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a bull. The bull had a chronic history of caudal mandibular soft tissue swelling. Postmortem examination revealed a 30 × 30-cm mass with a caseonecrotic center, hemorrhage and necrosis of the ipsilateral cervical musculature, osteolysis of the right paracondylar process of the skull and right horn base, pulmonary nodules, and enlarged tracheobronchial lymph nodes. Histology of the mass, lungs, and lymph nodes revealed an invasive neoplasm composed of epithelial cells arranged in nests and ductular structures supported by a spindle cell stroma, with frequent central necrosis. Immunohistochemistry revealed that epithelial cells were diffusely positive for pancytokeratin and p63 with multifocal vimentin positivity; stromal cells were diffusely positive for vimentin and α-SMA. A salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma was diagnosed based on these findings. Although rare, salivary gland neoplasia should be considered a differential diagnosis for mandibular masses in cattle.
