Abstract

We study numerically and experimentally the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from rectangular metagratings of V-shaped gold nanoantennas. We show that by carefully engineering the array pitch to steer the diffraction orders toward the single antenna emission, the extracted signal is maximized. This enhancement is attributed to the angular overlap between the radiation pattern and array factor and is comparable to the improvement yielded by the coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with local modes. Moreover, we demonstrate a simple technique to experimentally reconstruct the emission diagram of an antenna from measurements of the collective grating response as a function of the excitation angle. Excellent agreement is obtained with simulations when the sample is immersed either in air or in water, which is crucial in view of future sensing application. Thanks to the high signal-to-noise ratio and low dependence on the statistical particle dispersity, this method constitutes an effective alternative to back-focal plane imaging when very weak signals such as SHG are involved.

Abstract

Multi-resonant plasmonic simple geometries like nanocylinders and nanorods are highly interesting for two-photon photoluminescence and second harmonic generation applications, due to their easy fabrication and reproducibility in comparison with complex multi-resonant systems like dimers or nanoclusters. We demonstrate experimentally that by using a simple gold nanocylinder we can achieve a double resonantly enhanced two-photon photoluminescence of quantum dots, by matching the excitation wavelength of the quantum dots with a dipolar plasmon mode, while the emission is coupled with a radiative quadrupolar mode. We establish a method to separate experimentally the enhancement factor at the excitation and at the emission wavelengths for this double resonant system. The sensitivity of the spectral positions of the dipolar and quadrupolar plasmon resonances to the ellipticity of the nanocylinders and its impact on the two-photon photoluminescence enhancement are discussed.

Abstract

The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral position and specific spatial near-field distribution. However, we show that the implementation of such plasmonic nanoparticles in a sensing system can result in a change of the modes nature, its hybridization or dehybridization. These changes are not clearly pronounced in the far-field spectra and then may result in unexpected modifications of the sensor behavior. We show that the hybridization between the dipolar and quadrupolar modes of the plasmonic nanoparticle on the substrate results from quadrupolar mode excitation due to the superposition of the reflected and incoming light and, then, depends on the reflection of the substrate. The existence of the hybridized modes strongly depends on the surrounding environment of nanoparticles, and after the deposition of the nanometric polymer layer on top of the nanoparticle the hybridized modes vanish and are replaced by uncoupled multipolar resonances., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles in a non-symmetrical environment can feature the far-field and/or near-field interactions depending on the distance between the objects. In this work, we study the hybridization of three intrinsic plasmonic modes (dipolar, quadrupolar and hexapolar modes) sustained by one elliptical aluminium nanocylinder, as well as behavior of the hybridized modes when the nanoparticles are organized in array or when the refractive index of the surrounding medium is changed. The position and the intensity of these hybridized modes were shown to be affected by the near-field and far-field interactions between the nanoparticles. In this work, two hybridized modes were tuned in the UV spectral range to spectrally coincide with the intrinsic interband excitation and emission bands of ZnO nanocrystals. The refractive index of the ZnO nanocrystals layer influences the positions of the plasmonic modes and increases the role of the superstrate medium, which in turn results in the appearance of two separate modes in the small spectral region. Abstract

It has been recently suggested that the nonlinear optical processes in plasmonic nanoantennas allow for a substantial boost in the sensitivity of plasmonic sensing platforms. Here we present a sensing device based on an array of non-centrosymmetric plasmonic nanoantennas featuring enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) integrated in a microfluidic chip. We evaluate its sensitivity both in the linear and nonlinear regime using a figure of merit (FOM = $(\Delta I/I)/\Delta n$) that accounts for the relative change in the measured intensity, \textit{I}, against the variation of the environmental refractive index \textit{n}. While the signal-to-noise ratio achieved in both regimes allows the detection of a minimum refractive index variation $\Delta n_{min} \approx 10^{-3}$, the platform operation in the nonlinear regime features a sensitivity (i.e. the FOM) that is at least 3 times higher than the linear one. Abstract

Avalanche multiphoton photoluminescence (AMPL) is observed from coupled Au–Al nanoantennas under intense laser pumping, which shows more than one order of magnitude emission intensity enhancement and distinct spectral features compared with ordinary metallic photoluminescence. The experiments are conducted by altering the incident laser intensity and polarization using a home-built scanning confocal optical microscope. The results show that AMPL originates from the recombination of avalanche hot carriers that are seeded by multiphoton ionization. Notably, at the excitation stage, multiphoton ionization is shown to be assisted by the local electromagnetic field enhancement produced by coupled plasmonic modes. At the emission step, the giant AMPL intensity can be evaluated as a function of the local field environment and the thermal factor for hot carriers, in accordance with a linear relationship between the power law exponent coefficient and the emitted photon energy. The dramatic change in the spectral profile is explained by spectral linewidth broadening mechanisms. This study offers nanospectroscopic evidence of both the potential optical damages for plasmonic nanostructures and the underlying physical nature of light–matter interactions under a strong laser field; it illustrates the significance of the emerging topics of plasmonic-enhanced spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Abstract

International audience; The active control of the quantum dots (QD) photoluminescence (PL) is a challenge for many applications, including the development of new commercial LEDs or new single photon sources in the emerging field of quantum nanooptics. A way to modulate the QD’s luminescence is to combine them with chromophores. Indeed, by a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, a donor fluorophore can transfer its energy to an acceptor chromophore, without the involvement of photons. Interesting dyes are those, which exhibit photochromism properties. Indeed, due to their ability to optically switch between two molecular states with different absorption properties, the photochromic molecules (PM) have been used to actively control the QD’s PL1. As this modulation is based on an energy transfer from the QD, the PL can never reach a higher intensity than the one emitted by the QD alone. However, it has been proven that the PL intensity can be enhanced by coupling the QDs to plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs), like metallic nanoparticles 2. In this talk, we report on the optical control of the de-excitation pathways of a coupled system between CdSe/ZnS QDs and silver nanocylinders of varying diameters using the conformational change of photochromic spiropyran molecules 3. We use Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) to record quantum dots (QDs) photoluminescence lifetime and intensity before and after the photochromic transition.

Abstract

International audience; Metallic nanoparticles (MNP) may sustain Localized Surface Plasmon (LSP) resonances and the coupling between MNP and quantum dots (QD) is known to lead either to the enhancement or to the quenching of the QD photoluminescence [1]. The distance between QD and MNP is one of the switch parameters between both regimes. The goal of this study is to control the coupling distance (different from the physical distance) between QD and MNP by changing the refractive index of the surrounding medium using photochromic molecules (PM). These molecules are optical switches, which move from a transparent state to a colored one by absorbing UV light. The main drawback concerns the spectral overlap and the lifetime of each optical phenomenon, since the photochromic molecules can couple to LSP to induce strong coupling [2] or couple to QDs to quench the photoluminescence [3]. In this study, we measured photoluminescence spectra, images and lifetimes of QDs deposited on a glass substrate, with or without the presence of MNPs and PM.

Abstract

International audience; The optical characterization of a single metallic nanostructure has a strong interest in the scientific community owing to its localized surface plasmon resonances. For a single nano-object, the simplest and the accepted optical characterization technique is dark-field spectroscopy, even if there are many drawbacks and a certain complexity to operate it. We propose here using extinction spectroscopy of nanoparticles ensembles to characterize optically a single nanostructure. The scattering spectrum of a single gold nanocylinder and the extinction spectrum of a well-chosen array show similar results. We perform an experimental and numerical comparative study to draw parallels between both techniques.

Abstract

International audience; Metallic nanoparticles (MNP) may sustain Localized Surface Plasmon (LSP) resonances and the coupling between MNP and quantum dots (QD) is known to lead either to the enhancement or to the quenching of the QD photoluminescence. The distance between QD and MNP is one of the switch parameters between both regimes. The goal of this study is to control the coupling distance (different from the physical distance) between QD and MNP by changing the refractive index of the surrounding medium using photochromic molecules (PM). These molecules are optical switches, which move from a transparent state to a colored one by absorbing UV light. The main drawback concerns the spectral overlap and the lifetime of each optical phenomenon, since the photochromic molecules can couple to LSP to induce strong coupling or couple to QDs to quench the photoluminescence. In this study, we measured photoluminescence spectra, images and lifetimes of QDs deposited on a glass substrate, with or without the presence of MNPs and PM.

Abstract

International audience; Surface plasmon resonances can couple with molecular resonances (excitons) leading to weak or strong coupling regimes. The latter is always observed when the plasmon or the molecular exciton presents a large oscillator strength (high-Q plasmonic cavities or J-aggregates). We report here the observation of a strong coupling regime between the surface plasmon resonance of a nanoparticle array and the molecular excited state of photochromic molecules, both of them presenting weak oscillator strength.

Abstract

International audience; A localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) generated by an interaction of light and a metallic nanoparticle (NP) opens a wide horizon of studies in the different fields such as biosensing, health-care, tumor treatment, etc.. Nevertheless, the LSPR is very sensitive to interaction conditions: material, environment, geometry, polarization or angle of incidence.This investigation aims to fulfill a numerical and an experimental comparative study of the various size nanonparticles' LSPR evolution using different light sources and illumination types. The simulations are done with help of a commercial software from Lumerical Solutions Inc. based on the FDTD method. We verify the LSPR shifts caused by the well-known variations (size, geometry, environment changes). As a point source is used a vertical dipole placed in the vicinity of Ag NP. One may observe that there is LSPR shift for different distances between the source and NP. Moreover, the LSPR for dipole source varies from planewave illumination LSPR. We further find that there is LSPR shift for an horizontal dipole as well. The LSPR shift is quite intuitive for a dipole source depending on the distance between itself and NP, as we have coupled system. We demonstrate the electric field maps comparison of differently oriented dipoles and plane wave, which also can show the nature of the LSPR shift. At the current stage, our work shows promising results. For future we will do comparative studies via experiments and make the agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract

International audience; Metal nanoparticles have attracted great scientific and technological interest in many application fields, mainly due to their ability to sustain Localized Surface Plasmon Polaritons (LSPP). Linear optical properties and LSPP resonances of metallic nanoparticles or nano-antennas have been well described, since decades, in the literature by extinction and/or scattering spectroscopies and by radiation patterns in direct or in Fourier space. However, much less is known on their non-linear optical properties, and on the role of LSPP resonances in the enhancement of these effects. Two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL) and second harmonic generation (SHG) are both prominent examples of nonlinear effects observed on metallic nanoparticles. Compared to the TPPL process, a third-order process which intrinsically relies on a high local optical field, SHG additionally requires materials with a high second order susceptibility and an inversion symmetry breaking. Such selection rules have to be considered in addition to the ‘plasmonic molecular hybridization’ model, in order to understand the SHG and the TPPL efficiencies in metallic dimers. In this study, we focused on the linear and nonlinear optical characterization of Au-Al heterodimers (Fig1). These metallic dimers have been fabricated by a two-step electron-beam lithography process where the diameters of the Au and Al nanoparticles have been independently varied, as well as the gap distance. The linear optical properties (single dimer scattering spectra) and the non-linear optical properties (SHG and TPPL spectra) have been compared to understand the main physical phenomena involved.
