1. On Complexity Bounds and Confluence of Parallel Term Rewriting

Abstract

We revisit parallel-innermost term rewriting as a model of parallel computation on inductive data structures and provide a corresponding notion of runtime complexity parametric in the size of the start term. We propose automatic techniques to derive both upper and lower bounds on parallel complexity of rewriting that enable a direct reuse of existing techniques for sequential complexity. Our approach to find lower bounds requires confluence of the parallel-innermost rewrite relation, thus we also provide effective sufficient criteria for proving confluence. The applicability and the precision of the method are demonstrated by the relatively light effort in extending the program analysis tool AProVE and by experiments on numerous benchmarks from the literature., Comment: Final version formatted by the editorial board. 8. Effects on rumen pH and feed intake of a dietary concentrate challenge in cows fed rations containing pH modulators with different neutralizing capacity

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Forty-five Holstein lactating cows (41 ± 8.8 kg/d of milk yield, 96 ± 35.6 days in milk, and 607 ± 80.4 kg of body weight) were enrolled in this study to assess the effects of diets supplemented with sodium bicarbonate or a magnesium-based product and their corresponding differences in dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on rumen pH, rumen microbial population, and milk performance of dairy cattle exposed to an induced decrease in rumen pH through a dietary challenge. Cows were randomly allocated to 3 total mixed rations (TMR) differing in the type of supplement to modulate rumen pH: (1) control, no supplementation; (2) SB, supplemented with 0.82% of sodium bicarbonate with a neutralizing capacity (NC) of 12 mEq/g; and (3) MG, supplemented with 0.25% of magnesium oxide (pHix-Up, Timab Magnesium) with a NC of 39 mEq/g. Thus, SB and MG rations had, in theory, the same NC. The 3 TMR differed for control, SB, and MG in their DCAD-S (calculated considering Na, K, Cl, and S), which was on average 13.2, 21.2, and 13.7 mEq/100 g, respectively, or DCAD-Mg (calculated accounting for Mg, Ca, and P), which was 31.4, 41.2, and 35.2 mEq/100 g, respectively. The study lasted 63 d, with the first 7 d serving as a baseline, followed by a fortnightly progressive decrease of dietary forage-to-concentrate ratio (FCR) starting at 48:52, then 44:56, then 40:60, and finishing at 36:64. Individual dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded daily. Seven cows per treatment were equipped with electronic rumen boluses to monitor rumen pH. Control and SB cows consumed less dry matter (DM; 23.5 ± 0.31 kg/d) than MG cows (25.1 ± 0.31 kg/d) when fed dietary FCR of 44:56 and 40:60. Energy-corrected milk decreased from 40.8 ± 1.21 to 39.5 ± 1.21 kg/d as dietary FCR decreased, independently of dietary treatments. Rumen pH decreased and the proportion of the day with rumen pH

Abstract

With any (not necessarily proper) edge $k$-colouring $\gamma:E(G)\longrightarrow\{1,\dots,k\}$ of a graph $G$,one can associate a vertex colouring $\sigma\_{\gamma}$ given by $\sigma\_{\gamma}(v)=\sum\_{e\ni v}\gamma(e)$.A neighbour-sum-distinguishing edge $k$-colouring is an edge colouring whose associated vertex colouring is proper.The neighbour-sum-distinguishing index of a graph $G$ is then the smallest $k$ for which $G$ admitsa neighbour-sum-distinguishing edge $k$-colouring.These notions naturally extends to total colourings of graphs that assign colours to both vertices and edges.We study in this paper equitable neighbour-sum-distinguishing edge colourings andtotal colourings, that is colourings $\gamma$ for whichthe number of elements in any two colour classes of $\gamma$ differ by at most one.We determine the equitable neighbour-sum-distinguishing indexof complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs and forests,and the equitable neighbour-sum-distinguishing total chromatic numberof complete graphs and bipartite graphs.

Abstract

This thesis theorises a disengagement framework to disengage French individuals engaged with the militant salafi-jihadi movement and criticises the French government’s response to this growing phenomenon. To make sense of disengagement, engagement must first be made sense of. Engagement is examined through Social Movement Theory, especially via incentives, frames, networks, and the repertoire of action. Specifically, this thesis makes sense of why and how French individuals engage with the pan-Islamist movement through the Salafi-quietist and Tabligh movements. Then, it makes sense of French individuals engagement with the militant salafi-jihadi movement, namely, via a focus on the Algerian Groupe Islamique Arm´e, al-Qaeda, and Daesh. The pan-Islamist movement is seen as the phenomenon’s inception: a movement proselytising individuals to turn againstWestern society. While the pan-Islamist movement is non-violent, the militant salafi-jihadi movement is a violent sub-movement. The French government has only responded, since the 1980s, by force towards the militant salafi-jihadi movement but has not responded to the pan-Islamist movement. In fact, some politicians have been reticent to prevent, even criticise, the pan-Islamist movement’s spread. With the phenomenon’s evolution, especially the Syrian jihad, the French government’s hard counter-terrorism approach is inadequately adapted. It has created a soft approach in 2014. Yet, it follows the controversial notion of mental manipulation that neither counter-acts the pan-Islamist movement nor the militant salafi-jihadi movement. Via the examination of engagement, this thesis can both critically analyse the French hard and soft approaches and uncover lessons for disengagement in the hopes of establishing a disengagement framework. That is, a soft social approach. This is not a social approach through job creation and improvement of socioeconomics. Rather, this is a framework wherein individuals are given the chance to belong and participate into society. That is, they are engaged into the French Social Contract. If needed, disengagement programmes can be included. Overall, this thesis aims at a policy recommendation for the creation of a nationwide disengagement framework and an adaptation of France’s counter-terrorism strategy.

Abstract

The distance-dependence of the anisotropic atom-wall interaction is studied. The central result is the 1/z^6 quadrupolar anisotropy decay in the retarded Casimir-Polder regime. Analysis of the transition region between non-retarded van der Waals regime (in 1/z^3) and Casimir-Polder regime shows that the anisotropy cross-over occurs at very short distances from the surface, on the order of 0.03 Lambda, where Lambda is the atom characteristic wavelength. Summary: Astrocytes are glial cells that exhibit calcium signaling-mediated activity. Here, we present a protocol to monitor and manipulate astrocyte calcium activity from mouse amygdala slices. In the first part of this protocol, we describe the procedure of astrocyte calcium imaging. In the second part, we detail how to disrupt astrocyte calcium activity by patch-clamp-mediated loading of BAPTA. Evanescent matter-waves produced by an atom wave packet incident onto a repulsive barrier edge can be back-refracted and reconstructed by the application of negative-index "comoving" potential pulses. One shows that those collapses and revivals of evanescent matter waves give rise to surface matter waves and should be observable via atom reflection echoes issued from the barrier interface. Abstract

We consider the extension of optical meta-materials to matter waves. We show that the generic property of pulsed comoving magnetic fields allows us to fashion the wave-number dependence of the atomic phase shift. It can be used to produce a transient negative group velocity of an atomic wave packet, which results into a negative refraction of the matter wave. Application to slow metastable argon atoms Ar*(3P2) shows that the device is able to operate either as an efficient beam splitter or an atomic meta-lens. Abstract

Nuclear spin interference effects generated in a macroscopic sample of 10ml degassed water are detected in a simple NMR experiment. A \pi/2 - \tau - \pi/2 RF double pulse sequence (Ramsey sequence) is applied to the water sample immersed in a static magnetic field B0 " 4.7T. For a homogeneity of B0 of the order of \Delta B0/B0 = 2 . 10^{-8}, the nuclear spin interference term is controlled with a maximum relative deviation of 9.7 %. These results are a first step to manipulation of nuclear spin coherence of water molecules.

Abstract

Mycolactone is a diffusible lipid toxin produced by Mycobacterium ulcerans, the causative agent of Buruli ulcer disease. Altough bacterially derived mycolactone has been shown to traffic from cutaneous foci of infection to the bloodstream, the mechanisms underpinning its access to systemic circulation and import by host cells remain largely unknown. Using biophysical and cell-based approaches, we demonstrate that mycolactone specific association to serum albumin and lipoproteins is necessary for its solubilization and is a major mechanism to regulate its bioavailability. We also demonstrate that Scavenger Receptor (SR)-B1 contributes to the cellular uptake of mycolactone. Overall, we suggest a new mechanism of transport and cell entry, challenging the dogma that the toxin enters host cells via passive diffusion.

38. Propagation and early growth of normal faults

This research project used 3D seismic data located in the Levant Basin, eastern Mediterranean and in the Espirito Santo Basin, offshore Brazil, in order to investigate the early propagation of small normal faults and develop criteria to reconstruct fault kinematics. Detailed interpretation of the 3D geometry of faults, extensive mapping of the throw distribution and investigation of the ductile deformation in the volume surrounding the fault planes provided new insights into the propagation and early growth of normal faults. The Levant survey was used to investigate a unique array of small blind normal faults that were then compared to neighbouring small growth faults in order to better understand their early growth history. Criteria for the recognition of blind faults were defined. Unrestricted blind faults were compared to those that underwent a subsequent mechanical interaction with a major lithological boundary or another structure. The results show that such restrictions affect the throw distribution on most of the fault plane and is not only limited to the proximal zone of interaction. An analysis of growth faults that have recently made the transition from a blind stage to a syn-sedimentary stage suggests that most of the fault surface area formed during the blind propagation phase. A large proportion of the displacement was added during the syn-sedimentary phase as a result of interaction with the free surface. This led to a change in the position of the point of maximum displacement, as well as a shift of the entire vertical throw distribution. These results suggest that the dimensions of the faults were established early in the growth history and that displacement on and surrounding fault planes was added for a near constant dimension. Crestal extensional faults that grew by blind propagation before reaching the surface were investigated from the Espirito-Santo survey. These faults were reactivated by blind propagation after a significant period of quiescence. A reconstruction of the 3D geometry of the fault network and detailed analysis of the throw distribution provided new insights into the kinematics of reactivation. Two distinct modes of reactivation are recognised: a typical reactivation by upward propagation and a reactivation by dip linkage. These are selective processes and factors controlling preferential reactivation are discussed. All these results have wide implications for fault growth models and are applicable to many petroleum systems.

Abstract

A graph \(G\) is locally irregular if every two adjacent vertices of \(G\) have different degrees. A locally irregular decomposition of \(G\) is a partition \(E_1,\dots,E_k\) of \(E(G)\) such that each \(G[E_i]\) is locally irregular. Not all graphs admit locally irregular decompositions, but for those who are decomposable, in that sense, it was conjectured by Baudon, Bensmail, Przybyło and Woźniak that they decompose into at most 3 locally irregular graphs. Towards that conjecture, it was recently proved by Bensmail, Merker and Thomassen that every decomposable graph decomposes into at most 328 locally irregular graphs. We here focus on locally irregular decompositions of subcubic graphs, which form an important family of graphs in this context, as all non-decomposable graphs are subcubic. As a main result, we prove that decomposable subcubic graphs decompose into at most 5 locally irregular graphs, and only at most 4 when the maximum average degree is less than \(\frac{12}{5}\). We then consider weaker decompositions, where subgraphs can also include regular connected components, and prove the relaxations of the conjecture above for subcubic graphs.

Abstract

How can one distinguish the adjacent vertices of a graph through an edge-weighting? In the last decades, this question has been attracting increasing attention, which resulted in the active field of distinguishing labellings. One of its most popular problems is the one where neighbours must be distinguishable via their incident sums of weights. An edge-weighting verifying this is said neighbour-sum-distinguishing. The popularity of this notion arises from two reasons. A first one is that designing a neighbour-sum-distinguishing edge-weighting showed up to be equivalent to turning a simple graph into a locally irregular (i.e., without neighbours with the same degree) multigraph by adding parallel edges, which is motivated by the concept of irregularity in graphs. Another source of popularity is probably the influence of the famous 1-2-3 Conjecture, which claims that such weightings with weights in {1,2,3} exist for graphs with no isolated edge. The 1-2-3 Conjecture has recently been investigated from a decompositional angle, via so-called locally irregular decompositions, which are edge-partitions into locally irregular subgraphs. Through several recent studies, it was shown that this concept is quite related to the 1-2-3 Conjecture. However, the full connexion between all those concepts was not clear. In this work, we propose an approach that generalizes all concepts above, involving coloured weights and sums. As a consequence, we get another interpretation of several existing results related to the 1-2-3 Conjecture. We also come up with new related conjectures, to which we give some support.
