Abstract

Slow cook-off is, among other aggressions, one type of stimulus that is highly studied to ensure ammunition safety. Indeed, under this type of aggression, a high explosive tends to produce a reaction much more violent than under a fast cook-off. To study and improve knowledge of these phenomena, an experimental-numerical methodology has been developed by the CEA-Gramat. Firstly, the chemical kinetics of the energetic material is determined with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Then, these parameters are validated by comparing experimental data obtained with controlled thermal aggression tests and numerical results. To perform accurate simulations, a new numerical approach based on the quadrupoles method has been investigated. This paper presents the prospective work carried-out around this solving method and a numerical – experimental comparison with encouraging first results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Psychotic patients with a lifetime history of cannabis use generally show better cognitive functioning than other psychotic patients. Some authors suggest that cannabis-using patients may have been less cognitively impaired and less socially withdrawn in their premorbid life. Using a dataset comprising 948 patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and 1313 population controls across 6 countries, we examined the extent to which IQ and both early academic (Academic Factor [AF]) and social adjustment (Social Factor [SF]) are related to the lifetime frequency of cannabis use in both patients and controls. We expected a higher IQ and a better premorbid social adjustment in psychotic patients who had ever used cannabis compared to patients without any history of use. We did not expect such differences in controls. In both patients and controls, IQ was 3 points higher among occasional-users than in never-users (mean difference [Mdiff] = 2.9, 95% CI = [1.2, 4.7]). Both cases and control daily-users had lower AF compared to occasional (Mdiff = −0.3, 95% CI = [−0.5; −0.2]) and never-users (Mdiff = −0.4, 95% CI = [−0.6; −0.2]). Finally, patient occasional (Mdiff = 0.3, 95% CI = [0.1; 0.5]) and daily-users (Mdiff = 0.4, 95% CI = [0.2; 0.6]) had better SF than their never-using counterparts. This difference was not present in controls (Fgroup*frequency(2, 2205) = 4.995, P = .007). Our findings suggest that the better premorbid social functioning of FEP with a history of cannabis use may have contributed to their likelihood to begin using cannabis, exposing them to its reported risk-increasing effects for Psychotic Disorders.

Abstract

The influence of psychosocial stressors on psychosis risk has usually been studied in isolation and after the onset of the disorder, potentially ignoring important confounding relationships or the fact that some stressors that may be the consequence of the disorder rather than preexisting. The study of subclinical psychosis could help to address some of these issues. In this study, we investigated whether there was (i) an association between dimensions of subclinical psychosis and several psychosocial stressors including: childhood trauma, self-reported discrimination experiences, low social capital, and stressful life experiences, and (ii) any evidence of environment-environment (ExE) interactions between these factors. Data were drawn from the EUGEI study, in which healthy controls (N = 1497) and siblings of subjects with a psychotic disorder (N = 265) were included in six countries. The association between psychosocial stressors and subclinical psychosis dimensions (positive, negative and depressive dimension as measured by the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE) scale) and possible ExE interactions were assessed using linear regression models. After adjusting for sex, age, ethnicity, country, and control/sibling status, childhood trauma (beta for positive dimension: 0.13, negative: 0.49, depressive: 0.26) and stressful life events (positive: 0.08, negative: 0.16, depressive: 0.17) were associated with the three dimensions. Lower social capital was associated with the negative and depression dimensions (negative: 0.26, depressive: 0.13), and self-reported discrimination experiences with the positive dimension (0.06). Our findings are in favor of independent, cumulative and non-specific influences of social adversities in subclinical psychosis in non-clinical populations, without arguments for E x E interactions.

Abstract

The JWL EOS is widely used in different forms (two, three terms) according to the level of accuracy in the pressure-volume domain that applications need. The foundations of the relationship chosen to represent the reference curve, Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) isentrope, can be found assuming that the DP expansion isentrope issued from the CJ point is very nearly coincident with the Crussard curve in the pressure-material velocity plane. Its mathematical expression, using an appropriate relationship between shock velocity and material velocity leads to the exponential terms of the JWL EOS. It well validates the pressure-volume relationship chosen to represent the reference curves for DP. Nevertheless, the assumption of constant Gruneisen coefficient and heat capacity in the EOS thermal part remains the more restrictive assumption. A new derivation of JWL EOS is proposed, using a less restrictive assumption for the Gruneisen coefficient suggested by W.C. Davis to represent both large expansions and near-CJ states.

Abstract

Recent years have seen considerable progress in epidemiological and molecular genetic research into environmental and genetic factors in schizophrenia, but methodological uncertainties remain with regard to validating environmental exposures, and the population risk conferred by individual molecular genetic variants is small. There are now also a limited number of studies that have investigated molecular genetic candidate gene-environment interactions (G × E), however, so far, thorough replication of findings is rare and G × E research still faces several conceptual and methodological challenges. In this article, we aim to review these recent developments and illustrate how integrated, large-scale investigations may overcome contemporary challenges in G × E research, drawing on the example of a large, international, multi-center study into the identification and translational application of G × E in schizophrenia. While such investigations are now well underway, new challenges emerge for G × E research from late-breaking evidence that genetic variation and environmental exposures are, to a significant degree, shared across a range of psychiatric disorders, with potential overlap in phenotype. © 2014 The Author.

Abstract

Cette monographie étudie le développement économique et l'emploi au cours des vingt dernières années dans un département où l'emploi non agricole a augmenté à un rythme plus soutenu que la moyenne française. Pendant longtemps essentiellement agricole, l'économie a été orientée vers le tourisme dans les régions de montagne pendant les "Trente glorieuses". Plus récemment, les ressources locales ont été mobilisées avec l'essor du tourisme vert. L'industrie est restée cantonnée dans une position marginale tandis que l'agriculture continue à perdre beaucoup d'emplois. La structure de l'économie est maintenant largement dominée par les services. Cette spécialisation, qui fait l'objet d'un consensus local et qui s'est fondée sur les loisirs et le tourisme, à été renforcée par les politiques publiques, nationale et européenne, en particulier celles destinées à aider les régions défavorisées. Le solde migratoire positif, largement expliqué par l'héliotropisme, est un facteur favorable à l'emploi.
