Abstract

This work aims to achieve contactless absolute-temperature measurements of infrared-semi-transparent solids using an infrared thermal and spectroscopic imaging technique. The multispectral thermotransmittance coefficient fields in the 3-5 lm wavelength range for Sapphire, KBr, and Silicon are determined to be 6x10-4 K-1, 4x10-4 K-1, and -3x10-3 K-1, respectively. The most interesting result is the high temperature-dependent transmittance coefficient in the middle wave infrared region. With these coefficients, the absolute temperature fields in a range from room temperature to 140°C are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The thermal resistance at the interface between a Yb:YAG crystal and WCu cooler has been measured at 80 K and 300 K using a hot disk technique. Furthermore, the technique allows retrieving the thermal conductivity for both materials at the two investigated temperature. Those results lead to envisage the implementation of the hot disk technique as an efficient non-destructive and in-situ technique to evaluate the quality of the interface between the crystal and the cooler during the assembling process as well as a during the use of the laser along its lifetime. Abstract

The thermal resistance along the thickness of In3SbTe2 crystalline nanowires was measured using the scanning thermal microscopy in 3? mode. The nanowires were grown by metal organic vapor deposition, exploiting the VLS mechanism induced by Au metal-catalyst nanoparticles and harvested on a SiO2/Si substrate. Two nanowires with different thickness (13 and 23 nm) were investigated. The thermal resistance of the nanowires was determined using two different approaches; the first one exploits the experimental data, whereas the second one is more sophisticated, since it involves a minimization procedure. Both methods led to comparable values of the thermal resistance along the transverse direction (thickness) of the nanowire. The obtained results were explained starting from the mean free path of phonons calculated in the In3SbTe2 bulk.

Abstract

The in-plane and in-depth thermal conductivities of epoxy-carbon fiber composites have been measured at 77K and 300 K. The experimental technique rests on the hot disk method. The two thermal conductivities as well as the thermal contact resistance between the probe and the composite materials are estimated from measurement data and an analytical heat transfer model within the experimental configuration. Abstract

An analytical solution of the 3D heat diffusion problem, in the two-pad and four-pad 3ω experimental technique configurations, is achieved using integral transforms. It leads to rapid calculation of the average temperature on the heated area without any numerical problems whatever the dimensions of the narrow strip. Such an analytical resolution is of great interest in the low-frequency range, which is generally concerned by the method, where the finite thickness of the material plays a crucial role. In particular, we demonstrate that the 3D method is required to correctly calculate the heat diffusion along a narrow strip, when its length is particularly short, as it is the case in the two-pad configuration. Abstract

Importance Secretory phospholipase A 2 (sPLA 2 ) generates bioactive phospholipid products implicated in atherosclerosis. The sPLA 2 inhibitor varespladib has favorable effects on lipid and inflammatory markers; however, its effect on cardiovascular outcomes is unknown. Objective To determine the effects of sPLA 2 inhibition with varespladib on cardiovascular outcomes. Design, Setting, and Participants A double-blind, randomized, multicenter trial at 362 academic and community hospitals in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India, and North America of 5145 patients randomized within 96 hours of presentation of an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) to either varespladib (n = 2572) or placebo (n = 2573) with enrollment between June 1, 2010, and March 7, 2012 (study termination on March 9, 2012). Interventions Participants were randomized to receive varespladib (500 mg) or placebo daily for 16 weeks, in addition to atorvastatin and other established therapies. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary efficacy measure was a composite of cardiovascular mortality, nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI), nonfatal stroke, or unstable angina with evidence of ischemia requiring hospitalization at 16 weeks. Six-month survival status was also evaluated. Results At a prespecified interim analysis, including 212 primary end point events, the independent data and safety monitoring board recommended termination of the trial for futility and possible harm. The primary end point occurred in 136 patients (6.1%) treated with varespladib compared with 109 patients (5.1%) treated with placebo (hazard ratio [HR], 1.25; 95% CI, 0.97-1.61; log-rank P = .08). Varespladib was associated with a greater risk of MI (78 [3.4%] vs 47 [2.2%]; HR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.16-2.39; log-rank P = .005). The composite secondary end point of cardiovascular mortality, MI, and stroke was observed in 107 patients (4.6%) in the varespladib group and 79 patients (3.8%) in the placebo group (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.02-1.82; P = .04). Conclusions and Relevance In patients with recent ACS, varespladib did not reduce the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events and significantly increased the risk of MI. The sPLA 2 inhibition with varespladib may be harmful and is not a useful strategy to reduce adverse cardiovascular outcomes after ACS. Trial Registration clinicaltrials.gov Identifier:NCT01130246

27. Earthquake-volcano interaction imaged by coda wave interferometry

Abstract

Large earthquakes are often assumed to influence the eruptive activity of volcanoes. A major challenge to better understand the causal relationship between these phenomena is to detect and image, in detail, all induced changes, including subtle, non-eruptive responses. We show that coda wave interferometry can be used to image such earthquake-induced responses, as recorded at Yasur volcano (Vanuatu) following a magnitude 7.3 earthquake which occurred 80 km from its summit. We use repeating Long-Period events to show that the earthquake caused a sudden seismic velocity drop, followed by a slow partial recovery process. The spatial distribution of the response amplitude indicates an effect centered on the volcano. Our result demonstrates that, even if no major change in eruptive activity is observed, volcanoes will be affected by the propagation of large amplitude seismic waves through their structure, suggesting that Earthquake-volcano interaction is likely a more common phenomenon than previously believed. Abstract

The thermal resistance along the thickness of In3SbTe2 crystalline nanowires was measured using the scanning thermal microscopy in 3 ω mode. The nanowires were grown by metal organic vapor deposition, exploiting the VLS mechanism induced by Au metal-catalyst nanoparticles and harvested on a SiO2/Si substrate. Two nanowires with different thickness (13 and 23 nm) were investigated. The thermal resistance of the nanowires was determined using two different approaches; the first one exploits the experimental data, whereas the second one is more sophisticated, since it involves a minimization procedure. Both methods led to comparable values of the thermal resistance along the transverse direction (thickness) of the nanowire. Abstract

The color in salmonids is the main condition for an appropriate trading. This color is a result of the retained pigment incorporated to their diets. The present study was conducted to evaluate the pigmentation degree, color, costs of diets and the productive performance of rainbow trouts fed 25 and 80 ppm of astaxantin (AXT), respectively. A total of 200 chilean trouts (Cofradex variety), with an initial weight of 180 g, were used. They were randomly assigned to 2 treatments with 100 fishes each. The group fed 80 ppm of AXT, was considered the control one, because this was the more common level of inclusion when the assay was run. The productive performance was evaluated considering the average weight, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency, specific growth rate, mortality, factor of condition, growth percentage and pigment retention percentage. The color intensity was evaluated using the "Colour Chart" and "Colour Salmo-Fan by Roche Lab." The pigmentation, the pigment concentration in the flesh, was evaluated by high resolution liquid chromatography (HPLC). The productive performance results were similar between both treatments (p>0,05), but the pigment retention in the flesh throughout the assay was double in the group fed 25 ppm of AXT as compared with controls (p, Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar el grado de pigmentación, coloración, costo económico y la respuesta productiva de truchas arco iris frente al empleo de dos niveles de astaxantina (AXT) en sus dietas, utilizándose 200 truchas nacionales (variedad Cofradex) con un peso inicial de 180 g. Los peces se asignaron al azar a dos tratamientos con 100 truchas cada uno. Un tratamiento utilizó una dieta que incluía 25 ppm de AXT y a los otros se le suministró una dieta con 80 ppm de AXT, siendo este último el tratamiento testigo. La respuesta productiva se evaluó por medio del peso promedio, consumo de alimento, eficiencia de conversión alimenticia, tasa de crecimiento específico, mortalidad, factor de condición, porcentaje de crecimiento y porcentaje de retención. El grado de coloración se evaluó con la Carta Color Roche® y el Abanico Colorimétrico Salmo-Fan Roche®. La pigmentación, concentración de pigmento en el filete, se midió utilizando cromatografía líquida de alta resolución (HPLC). Las respuestas productivas fueron iguales en ambos tratamientos, salvo el porcentaje de retención que aumentó al doble con 25 ppm de AXT. Se alcanzó una pigmentación de 20 y 15 ppm de AXT con los aportes dietarios de 80 y 25 ppm de AXT, respectivamente, la coloración obtenida con los dos tratamientos, se enmarcó dentro de la coloración comercial mínima exigida para truchas arco iris. La incorporación de 25 ppm de AXT en las dietas permitió disminuir 2,2 veces el costo de la incorporación de pigmentos, lo que es una buena alternativa para los productores frente al desafío de elevar su competitividad en el mercado mundial de salmónidos de cultivo. &nbsp

Abstract

The temperature dependent thermal conductivity of In-Sb-Te thin films has been measured by modulated photothermal radiometry in the 20-550 °C range for samples with different Te content. Significant changes with temperature are observed and ascribed to a sequence of structural transformations on the basis of in-situ Raman spectra. The data suggest that the as-deposited material consisting of a mixture of polycrystalline InSb0.8Te0.2and amorphous Te first undergoes a progressive crystallization of the amorphous part, mostly above 300 °C. Further increase in temperature above 460 °C leads, for higher Te content in the alloy, to the formation of crystalline In3SbTe2, intertwined with a less conductive compound, possibly InTe and/or InSb. Upon cooling to room temperature, the initial polycrystalline InSb0.8Te0.2phase is mostly recovered along with other compounds, with a slightly higher thermal conductivity than that of the as deposited material.
