Abstract

Context. Scalar-tensor gravity (STG) theories are well-motivated alternatives to general relativity (GR). One class of STG theories, the Damour-Esposito-Farese (DEF) gravity, has a massless scalar field with two arbitrary coupling parameters. We are interested in this theory because, despite its simplicity, it predicts a wealth of different phenomena, such as dipolar gravitational wave emission and spontaneous scalarization of neutron stars (NSs). These phenomena of DEF gravity can be tested by timing binary radio pulsars. Aims. We aim to develop a new binary pulsar timing model DDSTG to enable more precise tests of STG theories based on a minimal set of binary parameters. The expressions for post-Keplerian (PK) parameters in DEF gravity are self-consistently incorporated into the model. The new technique takes into account all possible correlations between PK parameters naturally. Methods. Grids of physical parameters of NSs are calculated in the framework of DEF gravity for a set of 11 equations of state. The automatic Differentiation (AutoDiff) technique is employed, which aids in the calculation of gravitational form factors of NSs with higher precision than in previous works. The pulsar timing program TEMPO is selected as a framework for the realization of the DDSTG model. The implemented model is applicable to any type of pulsar companions. Results. We apply the DDSTG model to the most recently published observational data for PSR J2222-0137. The obtained limits on DEF gravity parameters for this system confirm and improve previous results. New limits are also the most reliable because DEF gravity is directly fitted to the data. We argue that future observations of PSR J2222-0137 can significantly improve the limits and that PSR-BH systems have the potential to place the tightest limits in certain areas of the DEF gravity parameter space., Comment: Accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics on 09.02.2023

Abstract

We present the study of the decay $J/\psi \rightarrow \rho\pi$. The results are based on of 5.2~million $J/\psi$ events collected by the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M collider. The branching fractions are measured to be $\B(J/\psi \rightarrow \rho\pi) = \big(2.072\pm 0.017 \pm 0.062 \big)\cdot 10^{-2}$ and $\B(J/\psi \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0) = \big(1.878 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.051 \big)\cdot 10^{-2}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Our results are more precise than the previous relative measurements.

Abstract

We report the results of timing observations of PSR J1952+2630, a 20.7 ms pulsar in orbit with a massive white dwarf companion. With the increased timing baseline, we obtain improved estimates for astrometric, spin, and binary parameters for this system. We get an improvement of an order of magnitude on the proper motion, and, for the first time, we detect three post-Keplerian parameters in this system: the advance of periastron, the orbital decay, and the Shapiro delay. We constrain the pulsar mass to 1.20$^{+0.28}_{-0.29}\rm M_{\odot}$ and the mass of its companion to 0.97$^{+0.16}_{-0.13}\rm M_{\odot}$. The current value of $\dot{P}_{\rm b}$ is consistent with GR expectation for the masses obtained using $\dot{\omega}$ and $h_3$. The excess represents a limit on the emission of dipolar GWs from this system. This results in a limit on the difference in effective scalar couplings for the pulsar and companion (predicted by scalar-tensor theories of gravity; STTs) of $|\alpha_{\rm p}-\alpha_{\rm c}| < 4.8 \times 10^{-3}$, which does not yield a competitive test for STTs. However, our simulations of future campaigns of this system show that by 2032, the precision of $\dot{P}_{\rm b}$ and $\dot{\omega}$ will allow for much more precise masses and much tighter constraints on the orbital decay contribution from dipolar GWs, resulting in $|\alpha_{\rm p}-\alpha_{\rm c}|<1.3 \times 10^{-3}$. We also present the constraints this system will place on the $\{\alpha_0,\beta_0\}$ parameters of DEF gravity by 2032. They are comparable to those of PSR J1738+0333. Unlike PSR J1738+0333, PSR J1952+2630 will not be limited in its mass measurement and has the potential to place even more restrictive limits on DEF gravity in the future. Further improvements to this test will likely be limited by uncertainties in the kinematic contributions to $\dot{P}_{\rm b}$ due to lack of precise distance measurements., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

The introduction of low–waste and waste–free technologies is an actual development direction for oil and gas enterprises, in particular for oil refineries. Development of methodological approaches to the analysis and synthesis of complex energy systems in order to increase the efficiency and environmental safety of the objects under study through the introduction of low–waste and waste–free technologies, the implementation of technological cycles close to closed. The solution of the task is carried out in accordance with the basic principles of the system analysis of complex objects, in stages: analysis of the structure of the object using the decomposition–aggregation approach; determination of internal and external links between the elements of the system; determination of the regularities of the functioning of the object and the complex of influencing factors. A block–hierarchical structure of an oil refining enterprise has been developed, which establishes quantitative and qualitative links between the elements of the system at all levels of the hierarchy. A system of performance indicators is proposed, in accordance with which an assessment is made of the current state of the object under study. The most energy–intensive production facilities of an oil refining enterprise have been determined, their exergy balances, have been calculated. The analysis made it possible to assess the potential for increasing environmental and energy efficiency, the main directions for the implementation of low–waste and waste–free technologies. Science–based directions for improving environmental safety and energy efficiency of the object of study are determined. Several options for schemes are proposed, an assessment of the energy and technical and economic efficiency of the integration of the proposed solutions into the energy complex of oil refineries is carried out. The results obtained confirm the feasibility of integrating the proposed scheme in an existing enterprise.

15. Surgical treatment of aneurysmal bone cysts of the lumbar spine: case report

Abstract

Introduction Pediatric and adolescent patients with aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine are normally treated by orthopaedic, neuro surgeons and oncologists. There is no consensus on the strategy and volume of preoperative and surgical treatment of the condition. There is a higher risk of pathological fracture and secondary neurological complications, tumor recurrence if open surgery is not performed in time. A second surgical intervention can hardly be avoided in such cases. The objective was to report the result of surgical treatment of a patient with aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine. Material and methods Outcome of a patient with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the L3 vertebra is presented. The technique of using therapeutic punctures as a preoperative preparation to be followed by an open surgical treatment is described. Absence of complaints and tumor recurrence, stability of the metal construct and bone fusion were the evaluation criteria. Results The patient was followed for 17 months after open surgery and CT scans showed no recurrence and demonstrated bone fusion at a long term. Discussion Many aspects of the course of the disease are to be considered in the treatment of children and adolescents with aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine. In our opinion, the step in the treatment of aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine should be considered Puncture for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes is to be performed to reduce pathological process is reduced, and the procedure to be followed by surgical intervention to remove the tumor. The strategy of surgical treatment would rely on impaired supporting columns of the spine, the degree of neural structure compression and a secondary spinal deformity. The need and extent of metal fixation is to be evaluated, potential vertebral growth identified, expediency of bone grafting after tumor removal, radical excision of the pathological focus to be considered. Conclusion The clinical case showed an effective combination of surgical techniques in the treatment of an aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine. Preoperative therapeutic puncture of the cyst allowed for reduction of the pathological process (decreasing pressure inside the cyst, thickening the cortical layer of the cyst and delimiting the tumor from the surrounding tissues), decreased volume of surgical intervention and blood loss due to a decreased activity of the pathological process compared to cases of untimely performed open surgery. Metal fixation in combination with bone auto- and allograft was practical for bone fusion.

Abstract

Single layers of hexagonal two-dimensional nanostructures such as graphene, silicene, and germanene exhibit large carrier Fermi velocities and, consequently, large light-matter coupling strength making these materials promising elements for nano-opto-electronics. Although these materials are centrosymmetric, the spatial dispersion turns out to be quite large allowing the second-order nonlinear response of such materials to be comparable to the non-centrosymmetric 2D ones. The second-order response of massless Dirac fermions has been extensively studied, however a general approach correct over the full Brillouin zone is lacking so far. To complete this gap, in the current paper we develop a general quantum-mechanical theory of the in-plane second-order nonlinear response beyond the Dirac cone approximation and applicable to the full Brillouin zone of the hexagonal tight-binding nanostructures. Abstract

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the course and outcome in chronic kidney disease of congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) associated with rare hereditary syndromes in children and adolescents, and to compare the results with literature data. The results of a follow-up study of the course and outcome in chronic kidney disease with syndromal congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract in rare hereditary syndromes (Pierson, Fraser 1 type, Renal hypodysplasia/ aplasia 3 type, Schuurs– Hoeómakers, CHARGE, Lowe, Renal-Coloboma, VACTERL association) and chromosomal abnormalities (Shereshevsky—Terner monosomia 45) are presented. In 4 out of 9 children and adolescents with congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract with rare hereditary syndromes, the formation of chronic kidney disease was established.

Abstract Using the 1.32 $$\hbox {pb}^{-1}$$ pb - 1 statistics collected at the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ peak with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M $$e^{+}e^{-\, }$$ e + e - collider, we measured the branching fractions of $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ meson decays to the final states 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})\pi ^{0}$$ π + π - ) π 0 , $$K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0}$$ K + K - π + π - π 0 , 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})$$ π + π - ) and $$K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K + K - π + π - . The results obtained for the decays $$J/\psi \rightarrow $$ J / ψ → 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})\pi ^{0}$$ π + π - ) π 0 , $$J/\psi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0}$$ J / ψ → K + K - π + π - π 0 contradict the measurements performed by other groups in the last century, but agree well with recent results of BABAR and BESIII collaborations.

Abstract

The present work continues a series of the KEDR measurements of the $R$ value that started in 2010 at the VEPP-4M $e^+e^-$ collider. By combining new data with our previous results in this energy range we measured the values of $R_{\text{uds}}$ and $R$ at nine center-of-mass energies between 3.08 and 3.72 GeV. The total accuracy is about or better than $2.6\%$ at most of energy points with a systematic uncertainty of about $1.9\%$. Together with the previous precise $R$ measurement at KEDR in the energy range 1.84-3.05 GeV, it constitutes the most detailed high-precision $R$ measurement near the charmonium production threshold., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1610.02827 and substantial text overlap with arXiv:1510.02667

Abstract

The product of the electronic width of the $\psi(2S)$ meson and the branching fraction of its decay to the muon pair was measured in the $e^{+}e^{-} \to \psi(2S) \to \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ process using nine data sets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 6.5 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider: \[ \Gamma_{ee}\times\mathcal{B}_{\mu\mu} = 19.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 ~\text{eV}. \] Adding the previous KEDR results on hadronic and leptonic channels, the values of the $\psi(2S)$ electronic width were obtained under two assumptions: either with the assumption of lepton universality \[ \Gamma_{ee} = 2.279 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.042 ~\text{keV} \] or without it, summing up hadronic and three independent leptonic channels: \[ \Gamma_{ee} = 2.282 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.042 ~\text{keV}. \]

Abstract

The main aim of the article is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the use of ground penetrating radars to assess various objects using the example of assessing the current state of highways. The article uses the software developed by the authors and the corresponding mathematical models. The analysis of the results obtained is based on mathematical models that have proven their effectiveness and is time-tested. It should be emphasised that the main problem in assessing roads with non-rigid pavement is associated with a change in the main parameters of the layers – thickness and dielectric constant. Previously, we proposed a scheme for the layer-by-layer determination of the values of the relative permittivity and then - the subsequent determination of the thickness of each layer, starting from the top layer and ending with the base. The paper presents the results of experiments actually carried out by the authors with various GPRs, which not only have different values of the central frequency, but also have significant design differences. In addition, the results of processing real data using the software developed by the authors are presented. As a result, an improved method of signal calibration has been proposed, which makes it possible to increase the reliability of assessing the thickness of road surfaces, as well as other objects.

Band gap control by an external field is useful in various optical, infrared and THz applications. However, widely tunable band gaps are still not practical due to variety of reasons. Using the orthogonal tight-binding method for $\pi$-electrons, we have investigated the effect of the external electric field on a subclass of monolayer chevron-type graphene nanoribbons that can be referred to as jagged graphene nanoribbons. A classification of such ribbons was proposed and band gaps for applied fields up to the SiO$_2$ breakdown strength ($1$ V/nm) were calculated. According to the tight-binding model, band gap opening (or closing) takes place for some type of jagged graphene nanoribbons in the external electric field that lays in the plane of the structure and perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. Tunability of the band gap up to $0.6$ eV is attainable for narrow ribbons. In the case of jagged ribbons with armchair edges larger jags forming a chevron pattern of the ribbon enhance the controllability of the band gap. For jagged ribbons with zigzag and armchair edges regions of linear and quadratic dependence of the band gap on the external electric field can be found that are useful in devices with controllable modulation of the band gap., Comment: 15 pages, 12 pdf figures

Abstract

Abstract

The results of laboratory experiments that show the capabilities of modern georadars are presented. Analysis of GPR capabilities allowed to propose a new approach to solving the actual problem of detecting subsurface cracks. The proposed method for recording pulse signals and data processing is based on algorithms and software previously developed by the authors. With the help of this method and the experiments carried out, the possibility of agreed solution to the problem of choosing the optimal parameters of the GPR pulsed signals was shown. To confirm the effectiveness of the developed signal processing methods, a series of laboratory experiments were carried out. The new version of the program "GeoVizy-2020" made it possible to increase the efficiency of processing complex impulse signals. To check the adequacy of the results obtained, a method was used, which is based on the procedure for direct measurement of the real layer thickness in laboratory and field conditions and comparison of the data obtained with the results of numerical simulation. As a result, evidence is presented of the advantages of using pulsed signals for assessing layer parameters, searching for subsurface cracks and processing the results of surveys of road surfaces is presented.

Abstract

Abstract

The ratio of the electron and muon widths of the $J/\psi$ meson has been measured using direct $J/\psi$ decays in the KEDR experiment at the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider. The result $\Gamma_{ee}(J/\psi)/\Gamma_{\mu\mu}(J/\psi)=1.0022\pm0.0044\pm0.0048\ (0.65\%)$ is in good agreement with the lepton universality. The experience collected during this analysis will be used for a $J/\psi$ lepton width determination with up to 1% accuracy., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The article deals with the modeling of heat transfer process in a drum reactor of a semi-coking unit of oil shale with a solid coolant between ash and shale particles in the conditions of constant separation of vapor-gas products. The dominant role of the convective component of the process is revealed and the curves of heating of shale particles are obtained taking into account the endothermic effect. It is established that the smallest fraction of fuel warms up within 30-60 seconds and further serves as a source of heat for other fractions. In the interval of 400-600 seconds, the heating of the largest fraction is completed. The further stay of the shale mixture in the reactor is caused by the lagging rate of the thermal decomposition process from heat exchange, and the temperature decrease by 20-250C by the presence of the endothermic effect of the decomposition of organic matter.

45. Digital Triggering Device and Generator of Starting Pulses for Ignition of Spark Gaps of REB Accelerator 'TEMP'

Abstract

To ensure the controllability and high noise immunity while measuring the characteristics of the accelerators of relativistic electron beams (REB) “TEMP”, and parameters of the processes in them, triggering devices with galvanic isolation of input and output circuits, allowing to set up the pulse delays in the range from 1 μs to tens of milliseconds, have been developed. When they are used, the effect of loop currents, which flow in the common ground circuits and affect the operation of the measuring equipment, is eliminated. To synchronize the operation of the REB accelerator “TEMP” a triggering device was developed and assembled. It was assembled from blocks produced on the up-to-date elemental base and is a complete functional product. The triggering device comprises a trigger block and delay units. The trigger block is developed on the basis of an AND - NOT chip and a multivibrator. The delay units are built on single-shot vibrators K155AG1 and differ in the value of adjustable delays, which are determined by the external elements R and C, connected to the multivibrator. Unfortunately, in case the millisecond delays are set up, the pulse drop on the multivibrator is not stable. Therefore, a digital triggering device was developed. The digital triggering device is built on the basis of digital microcircuits and consists of the following blocks: binary-decimal counters, decoders, and one oscillator with quartz frequency stabilization, which is common to all four channels. It contains four identical channels with delay adjustment from one microsecond to one hundred milliseconds. Such a pattern of the circuit allows, if necessary, adding channels for starting other units. Pulse signals of the triggering device are fed to the ignitor unit of the spark-gaps. A pulse generator for igniting the spark-gaps of the REB accelerator “TEMP” has been developed. A generator, designed to control the spark gaps ignition in the High Voltage Pulse Generator (HVPG) and spark gaps ignition in the magnetic systems, which are used in switching systems of the capacitor banks with the energy of 60 ¸ 150 kJ, has been described. The generator provides voltage pulses with the amplitude of up to 20 kV, at the current in the short circuit mode of 5 A, the pulse duration of the first half wave of 12 μs, and the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of not more than 10 Hz.
