It shows how competition between foreign-born workers for jobs in the UK is currently being recast by changes in the jobs available, in forms of precarious labour market attachment and by new patterns of migration into the UK since EU expansion in 2004. The article documents the ways in which migrants with different sets of social characteristics (nationality, gender and skin colour) and different sets of legal entitlements (legal citizenship, EU membership and entitlement to residence) are differentially placed in their competition for some of the poorest jobs in the British economy, drawing on an empirical study of the migrant divisions of labour emerging in two significant sectors in the service industries. It concludes by arguing that new and deeper divisions are emerging between foreign-born workers in the UK. Resume Cet article vise aevaluer les rapports entre l'essor constant de formes de travail precaire et l'impact des migrants economiques en nombre croissant employes sur les marches du travail britanniques. La concurrence entre les travailleurs d'origine etrangere pour des emplois au Royaume-Uni subit actuellement une mutation du fait de l'evolution des postes disponibles, sous des formes d'integration precaire au marche du travail et selon de nouveaux modeles d'immigration depuis l'elargissement de l'UE en 2004. A partir d'une etude empirique sur les divisions du travail qui se dessinent chez les migrants dans deux importants secteurs de l'industrie des services, l'article met en evidence les manieres dont les migrants reunissant differentes caracteristiques sociales (nationalite, genre et couleur de peau) et differentes habilitations legales (citoyennete, ressortissant de l'UE et droit de sejour) se placent differemment dans la competition pour certains des postes les plus mediocres de l'economie britannique. Il apparait en conclusion que des divisions nouvelles et plus profondes apparaissent entre les travailleurs d'origine etrangere au Royaume-Uni. Through an analysis of qualitative data, I demonstrate how gender roles influence obesity risk in the Moroccan context. Current social and economic theories, including the nutrition transition theory, are inadequate in explaining the persistent gender differentials in health status across time and place. I suggest that Moroccan women's higher prevalence of obesity is predominantly the outcome of different risks acquired from their distinct roles. In the Moroccan context, we can gain insight into how men and women divide household labour and how the overall non-egalitarian nature of social roles may deleteriously affect women's health. I hypothesise that marital status, age and socioeconomic status determine Moroccan women's household roles and help to explain why women are more likely to be obese than men. The main findings support this hypothesis and demonstrate the interactive relationship between culture and structure in influencing obesity risk. This article responds to a call from Kerfoot and Korczynski to investigate the gendering of service sector employment. As a characteristic of many post-industrial economies in the global North is the growing significance of migrant workers, this article investigates the impact of migration for work on the gendering of service work. Taking the embodied and emotional labour of workers to be fundamental to service work, it describes how these are refracted and produced through migration. The article draws on 60 interviews with workers in a west London hotel who were born abroad and the human resources staff and managers who are responsible for the recruitment and promotion of the workforce. We argue that migration is an important process in the construction of the contemporary workforce in post-industrial service economies and that migration status should be understood as intersecting with gender in the production of a gendered performance at work. In this article we examine the working lives of young, single, middle-class Indian men employed in the increasingly global hospitality sector in London, UK. Using a case study of a single hotel, we investigate a particular form of Indian middle-class global mobility that differs from both the well-documented ‘low status’, unskilled migrant as well as the highly-skilled, science oriented migrants. We explore how their jobs both reinforce and challenge middle-class Indian notions of masculinity, as well as how the recruitment process is both gendered and economically selective. We suggest that the transnational formation of Indian middle-class identity is drawn from four main categories: a middle-class lifestyle in India, class-based motivations, the gendered and class based recruitment process of the UK hospitality industry, and the performance of class-based gender identities.
