Abstract

El empoderamiento representa un desafío a las relaciones de poder existentes y busca obtener mayor control sobre las fuentes de poder. Conduce a lograr autonomía individual, a estimular la resistencia, la organización colectiva y la protesta mediante la movilización. En suma, los procesos de empoderamiento son, para las mujeres, un desafío a la ideología patriarcal con miras a transformar las estructuras que refuerzan la discriminación de género y la desigualdad social. El empoderamiento, por lo tanto, se entiende como un proceso de superación de la desigualdad de género. El empoderamiento no un es proceso lineal con un inicio y un fin definidos de manera igual para las diferentes mujeres o grupos de mujeres. El empoderamiento es diferente para cada individuo o grupo según su vida, contexto e historia y según la localización de la subordinación en lo personal, familiar comunitario, nacional, regional y global. En este libro se privilegia el uso de los términos empoderamiento y empoderar, porque ellos señalan la acción, y porque empoderamiento implica que el sujeto se convierte en agente activo como resultado de un accionar, que varía de acuerdo con cada situación concreta.

Abstract

Chapter 2 of the book "Feminisms in Development: Contradictions, Contestations & Challenges" is presented. It examines certain gender myths that are being used to convert poor women into instruments of both neo-liberal and fundamentalist agendas in India. It analyzes the operation of the myths in the context of a government-initiated rural poverty alleviation program in southern India and the constitutionally-mandated reservation of seats for women in panchayats.

Abstract

The women-energy nexus involves the challenge of engendering energy and the challenge of empowering women through energy. The first challenge arises from the gender disaggregation of energy consumption patterns. A quantitative account of the share of women in these patterns is presented through a description of the rural energy consumption pattern of the village of Pura in South India. The results indicate that women work more hours than men. Women also perform the back-breaking tasks and are displaced by agricultural mechanisation. The energy output-input imbalance is aggravated by the fact that, in developing countries, women traditionally eat last and least in a family – women therefore take in less food energy than men. The gender distribution of labour results in negative health impacts. The scarcity of energy services in rural areas has serious social and gender impacts. Tackling them requires energy interventions to improve the quality of life for women. Examples of such energy interventions are the community biogas plant at the village of Pura and the multi-purpose platforms of the Mali project. Since technological opportunities exist for such energy interventions, attention is turned to the second challenge of empowering women through energy entrepreneur ship. This requires a change of mind-set on the part of energy planners and activists – they must promote the notion of women as managers and entrepreneurs, and not just beneficiaries, of improved energy services. The idea is to push the following sequence: women as deprived in energy consumption patterns → women as beneficiaries of energy interventions → women as managers of enterprises → women as energy entrepreneurs. This is nothing short of a paradigm shift – but once achieved and implemented, the results will speak for themselves. Such an approach will engender energy by converting it into a force for improving the quality of life as well as enhancing productive capacities – a virtuous circle of energy for women and women for energy. 27. Global Integration without Ownership:Designing International NGOs.

Abstract

An enduring challenge facing multinational organizations is how to coordinate among globally dispersed units and member organizations. Despite a substantial body of work on global integration, there has been little research on the mechanisms of integration under conditions of weak ownership--where the center has little formal authority over its units or in meta-organizations where independent firms are linked by system-level goals. We examine this problem in an organizational context where ownership is particularly weak--international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs)--with special attention to the design of organizational and governance structures for achieving integration. We identify a number of distinct organizational structures (federation, confederation, network, and constituency support organization), and we clarify the mechanisms of formal and informal authority for integration available to the center under each structure. We also examine the design of governance structures, that is, the allocation of decision rights in governing bodies in order to build commitment to shared goals. We further argue that, in contexts of weak ownership, these structural mechanisms require active efforts by the center to legitimate them. We assemble our findings into a model of global integration comprised of formal authority, informal authority, and their sources of legitimacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
