One way to study the spread of disease is through mathematical models. The most successful models compartmentalize the host population according to their infectious stage, e.g., susceptible (S), infected (I), exposed (E), and recovered (R). The composition of these compartments leads to the SI, SIS, SIR, and SEIR models. In this Chapter, we present and compare three formulations of SI, SIS, SIR, and SEIR models in the framework of standard (integer operators), fractional (Caputo sense), and fractal derivatives (Hausdorff sense). As an application of the SI model, we study the evolution of AIDS cases in Bangladesh from 2001 to 2021. For this case, our simulations suggest that fractal formulation describes the data well. For the SIS model, we consider syphilis data from Brazil from 2006 to 2017. In this case, the three frameworks describe the data with good accuracy. We used data from Influenza A to adjust the SIR model in previous approaches and observed that the fractional formulation was better. The last application considers the COVID-19 data from India in the range 2020-04-10 to 2020-12-31 to adjust the parameters of the SEIR model. The standard formulation fits the data better than the other approaches. As a common result, all models exhibit steady solutions in the different formulations. The time to reach a steady solution is correlated to the considered approach. The standard and fractal formulations reach the steady state earlier when compared with the fractional formulation.

In this work, effects of constant and time-dependent vaccination rates on the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible (SEIRS) seasonal model are studied. Computing the Lyapunov exponent, we show that typical complex structures, such as shrimps, emerge for given combinations of constant vaccination rate and another model parameter. In some specific cases, the constant vaccination does not act as a chaotic suppressor and chaotic bands can exist for high levels of vaccination (e.g., $> 0.95$). Moreover, we obtain linear and non-linear relationships between one control parameter and constant vaccination to establish a disease-free solution. We also verify that the total infected number does not change whether the dynamics is chaotic or periodic. The introduction of a time-dependent vaccine is made by the inclusion of a periodic function with a defined amplitude and frequency. For this case, we investigate the effects of different amplitudes and frequencies on chaotic attractors, yielding low, medium, and high seasonality degrees of contacts. Depending on the parameters of the time-dependent vaccination function, chaotic structures can be controlled and become periodic structures. For a given set of parameters, these structures are accessed mostly via crisis and in some cases via period-doubling. After that, we investigate how the time-dependent vaccine acts in bi-stable dynamics when chaotic and periodic attractors coexist. We identify that this kind of vaccination acts as a control by destroying almost all the periodic basins. We explain this by the fact that chaotic attractors exhibit more desirable characteristics for epidemics than periodic ones in a bi-stable state.

Dengue is a viral vector-borne infectious disease that affects many countries worldwide, infecting around 390 million people per year. The main outbreaks occur in subtropical and tropical countries. We study here the influence of climate on dengue in Natal (2016-2019), Brazil, Iquitos (2001-2012), Peru, and Barranquilla (2011-2016), Colombia. For the analysis and simulations, we apply Machine Learning (ML) techniques, especially the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. In addition, regarding a feature in the ML technique, we analyze three possibilities: only dengue cases (D); climate and dengue cases (CD); humidity and dengue cases (HD). Depending on the city, our results show that the climate data can improve or not the forecast. For instance, for Natal, D induces a better forecast. For Iquitos, it is better to use CD. Nonetheless, for Barranquilla, the forecast is better, when we include cases and humidity data. For Natal, when we use more than 64\% and less than 80\% of the time series for training, we obtain results with correlation coefficients ($r$) among 0.917 and 0.949 and mean absolute errors (MAE) among 57.783 and 71.768 for the D case in forecasting. The optimal range for Iquitos is obtained when 79\% up to 88\% of the time series is considered for training. For this case, the best case is CD, having a minimum $r$ equal to 0.850 and maximum 0.887, while values of MAE oscillate among 2.780 and 4.156. For Barranquilla, the optimal range occurs between 72\% until 82\% of length training. In this case, the better approach is HD, where the measures exhibit a minimum $r$ equal to 0.942 and a maximum 0.953, while the minimum and maximum MAE vary between 6.085 and 6.669. We show that the forecast of dengue cases is a challenging problem and climate variables do not always help. However, when we include the mentioned climate variables, the most important one is humidity.

Spiral waves are spatial-temporal patterns that can emerge in different systems as heart tissues, chemical oscillators, ecological networks and the brain. These waves have been identified in the neocortex of turtles, rats, and humans, particularly during sleep-like states. Although their functions in cognitive activities remain until now poorly understood, these patterns are related to cortical activity modulation and contribute to cortical processing. In this work, we construct a neuronal network layer based on the spatial distribution of pyramidal neurons. Our main goal is to investigate how local connectivity and coupling strength are associated with the emergence of spiral waves. Therefore, we propose a trustworthy method capable of detecting different wave patterns, based on local and global phase order parameters. As a result, we find that the range of connection radius (R) plays a crucial role in the appearance of spiral waves. For R < 20 {\mu}m, only asynchronous activity is observed due to small number of connections. The coupling strength (gsyn ) greatly influences the pattern transitions for higher R, where spikes and bursts firing patterns can be observed in spiral and non-spiral waves. Finally, we show that for some values of R and gsyn bistable states of wave patterns are obtained.

We study three different strategies of vaccination in a SEIRS (Susceptible--Exposed--Infected--Recovered--Susceptible) seasonal forced model, which are: ($i$) continuous vaccination; ($ii$) periodic short time localized vaccination and ($iii$) periodic pulsed width campaign. Considering the first strategy, we obtain an expression for the basic reproduction number and infer a minimum vaccination rate necessary to ensure the stability of the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) solution. In the second strategy, the short duration pulses are added to a constant baseline vaccination rate. The pulse is applied according to the seasonal forcing phases. The best outcome is obtained by locating the intensive immunization at inflection of the transmissivity curve. There, a vaccination rate of $44.4\%$ of susceptible individuals is enough to ensure DFE. For the third vaccination proposal, additionally to the amplitude, the pulses have a prolonged time width. We obtain a non-linear relationship between vaccination rates and the duration of the campaign. Our simulations show that the baseline rates, as well as the pulse duration, can substantially improve the vaccination campaign effectiveness. These findings are in agreement with our analytical expression. We show a relationship between the vaccination parameters and the accumulated number of infected individuals, over the years and show the relevance of the immunisation campaign annual reaching for controlling the infection spreading. Regarding the dynamical behaviour of the model, our simulations shows that chaotic and periodic solutions, as well as bi-stable regions, depend on the vaccination parameters range.

The description of neuronal activity has been of great importance in neuroscience. In this field, mathematical models are useful to describe the electrophysical behaviour of neurons. One successful model used for this purpose is the Adaptive Exponential Integrate-and-Fire (Adex), which is composed of two ordinary differential equations. Usually, this model is considered in his standard formulation, i.e., with integer order derivatives. In this work, we propose and study the fractal extension of Adex model, which in simple terms corresponds to replacing the integer derivative by non-integer. As non-integer operators, we choose the fractal derivatives. We explore the effects of equal and different orders of fractal derivatives in the firing patterns and mean frequency of the neuron described by the Adex model. Previous results suggest that fractal derivatives can provide a more realistic representation due to the fact that the standard operators are generalized. Our findings show that the fractal order influences the inter-spike intervals and changes the mean firing frequency. In addition, the firing patterns depend not only on the neuronal parameters but also on the order of respective fractal operators. As our main conclusion, the fractal order below the unit value increases the influence of the adaptation mechanism in the spike firing patterns.

This work studies the SIS model extended by fractional and fractal derivatives. We obtain explicit solutions for the standard and fractal formulations; for the fractional case, we study numerical solutions. As a real data example, we consider the Brazilian syphilis data from 2011 to 2021. We fit the data by considering the three variations of the model. Our fit suggests a recovery period of 11.6 days and a reproduction ratio ($R_0$) equal to 6.5. By calculating the correlation coefficient ($r$) between the real data and the theoretical points, our results suggest that the fractal model presents a higher $r$ compared to the standard or fractional case. The fractal formulation is improved when two different fractal orders with distinguishing weights are considered. This modification in the model provides a better description of the data and improves the correlation coefficient.

In this work, we analyze the effects of fractional derivatives in the chaotic dynamics of a cancer model. We begin by studying the dynamics of a standard model, {\it i.e.}, with integer derivatives. We study the dynamical behavior by means of the bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponents, and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), such as the recurrence rate (RR), the determinism (DET), and the recurrence time entropy (RTE). We find a high correlation coefficient between the Lyapunov exponents and RTE. Our simulations suggest that the tumor growth parameter ($\rho_1$) is associated with a chaotic regime. Our results suggest a high correlation between the largest Lyapunov exponents and RTE. After understanding the dynamics of the model in the standard formulation, we extend our results by considering fractional operators. We fix the parameters in the chaotic regime and investigate the effects of the fractional order. We demonstrate how fractional dynamics can be properly characterized using RQA measures, which offer the advantage of not requiring knowledge of the fractional Jacobian matrix. We find that the chaotic motion is suppressed as $\alpha$ decreases, and the system becomes periodic for $\alpha \lessapprox 0.9966$. We observe limit cycles for $\alpha \in (0.9966,0.899)$ and fixed points for $\alpha<0.899$. The fixed point is determined analytically for the considered parameters. Finally, we discover that these dynamics are separated by an exponential relationship between $\alpha$ and $\rho_1$. Also, the transition depends on a supper transient which obeys the same relationship.

In this work, we study the unpredictability of seasonal infectious diseases considering a SEIRS model with seasonal forcing. To investigate the dynamical behaviour, we compute bifurcation diagrams type hysteresis and their respective Lyapunov exponents. Our results from bifurcations and the largest Lyapunov exponent show bistable dynamics for all the parameters of the model. Choosing the inverse of latent period as control parameter, over 70% of the interval comprises the coexistence of periodic and chaotic attractors, bistable dynamics. Despite the competition between these attractors, the chaotic ones are preferred. The bistability occurs in two wide regions. One of these regions is limited by periodic attractors, while periodic and chaotic attractors bound the other. As the boundary of the second bistable region is composed of periodic and chaotic attractors, it is possible to interpret these critical points as tipping points. In other words, depending on the latent period, a periodic attractor (predictability) can evolve to a chaotic attractor (unpredictability). Therefore, we show that unpredictability is associated with bistable dynamics preferably chaotic, and, furthermore, there is a tipping point associated with unpredictable dynamics.

The study of chimera states or, more generally, coherence-incoherence patterns has led to the development of several tools for their identification and characterization. In this work, we extend the eigenvalue decomposition method to distinguish between single-well and double-well patterns. By applying our method, we are able to identify the following four types of dynamical patterns in a ring of nonlocally coupled Chua circuits and nonlocally coupled cubic maps: single-well cluster, single-well coherence-incoherence pattern, double-well cluster, and double-well coherence-incoherence. In a ring-star network of Chua circuits, we investigate the influence of adding a central node on the spatio-temporal patterns. Our results show that increasing the coupling with the central node favors the occurrence of single-well coherence-incoherence states. We observe that the boundaries of the attraction basins resemble fractal and riddled structures

In this work, to support decision making of immunisation strategies, we propose the inclusion of two vaccination doses in the SEIR model considering a stochastic cellular automaton. We analyse three different scenarios of vaccination: $i) unlimited doses, (ii) limited doses into susceptible individuals, and (iii) limited doses randomly distributed overall individuals. Our results suggest that the number of vaccinations and time to start the vaccination is more relevant than the vaccine efficacy, delay between the first and second doses, and delay between vaccinated groups. The scenario (i) shows that the solution can converge early to a disease-free equilibrium for a fraction of individuals vaccinated with the first dose. In the scenario (ii), few two vaccination doses divided into a small number of applications reduce the number of infected people more than into many applications. In addition, there is a low waste of doses for the first application and an increase of the waste in the second dose. The scenario (iii) presents an increase in the waste of doses from the first to second applications more than the scenario $(ii)$. In the scenario (iii), the total of wasted doses increases linearly with the number of applications. Furthermore, the number of effective doses in the application of consecutive groups decays exponentially overtime.

We study the time delay in the synaptic conductance for suppression of spike synchronisation in a random network of Hodgkin Huxley neurons coupled by means of chemical synapses. In the first part, we examine in detail how the time delay acts over the network during the synchronised and desynchronised neuronal activities. We observe a relation between the neuronal dynamics and the syaptic conductance distributions. We find parameter values in which the time delay has high effectiveness in promoting the suppression of spike synchronisation. In the second part, we analyse how the delayed neuronal networks react when pulsed inputs with different profiles (periodic, random, and mixed) are applied on the neurons. We show the main parameters responsible for inducing or not synchronous neuronal oscillations in delayed networks.

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms and can spread through different ways. Mathematical models and computational simulation have been used extensively to investigate the transmission and spread of infectious diseases. In other words, mathematical model simulation can be used to analyse the dynamics of infectious diseases, aiming to understand the effects and how to control the spread. In general, these models are based on compartments, where each compartment contains individuals with the same characteristics, such as susceptible, exposed, infected, and recovered. In this paper, we cast further light on some classical epidemic models, reporting possible outcomes from numerical simulation. Furthermore, we provide routines in a repository for simulations.

Brain tumours are masses of abnormal cells that can grow in an uncontrolled way in the brain. There are different types of malignant brain tumours. Gliomas are malignant brain tumours that grow from glial cells and are identified as astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and ependymoma. We study a mathematical model that describes glia-neuron interaction, glioma, and chemotherapeutic agent. In this work, we consider drug sensitive and resistant glioma cells. We show that continuous and pulsed chemotherapy can kill glioma cells with a minimal loss of neurons.

Cancer is a term used to refer to a large set of diseases. The cancerous cells grow and divide and, as a result, they form tumours that grow in size. The immune system recognise the cancerous cells and attack them, though, it can be weakened by the cancer. One type of cancer treatment is chemotherapy, which uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Clinical, experimental, and theoretical research has been developed to understand the dynamics of cancerous cells with chemotherapy treatment, as well as the interaction between tumour growth and immune system. We study a mathematical model that describes the cancer growth, immune system response, and chemotherapeutic agents. The immune system is composed of resting cells that are converted to hunting cells to combat the cancer. In this work, we consider drug sensitive and resistant cancer cells. We show that the tumour growth can be controlled not only by means of different chemotherapy protocols, but also by the immune system that attacks both sensitive and resistant cancer cells. Furthermore, for all considered protocols, we demonstrate that the time delay from resting to hunting cells plays a crucial role in the combat against cancer cells.

We study a quantization via fractional derivative of a nonminimal derivative coupling cosmological theory, namely, the Fab Four John theory. Its Hamiltonian version presents the issue of fractional powers in the momenta. That problem is solved here by the application of the so-called conformable fractional derivative. This leads to a Wheeler-DeWitt equation of second order, showing that a Bohm-de Broglie interpretation can be constructed. That combination of fractional quantization and Bohmian interpretation provides us a new quantization method, in which the quantum potential is the criterion to say if a quantum solution is acceptable or not to be further studied. We show that a wide range of solutions for the scale factor is possible. Among all of those, a bouncing solution analogous to the perfect fluid cosmology seems to deserve special attention.

The brain has the phenomenal ability to reorganize itself by forming new connections among neurons and by pruning others. The so-called neural or brain plasticity facilitates the modification of brain structure and function over different time scales. Plasticity might occur due to external stimuli received from the environment, during recovery from brain injury, or due to modifications within the body and brain itself. In this paper, we study the combined effect of short-term (STP) and spike-timing-dependent plasticities (STDP) on the synaptic strength of excitatory coupled Hodgkin-Huxley neurons and show that plasticity can facilitate the formation of modular neural networks with complex topologies that resemble those of networks with preferential attachment properties. In particular, we use an STDP rule that alters the synaptic coupling intensity based on time intervals between spikes of postsynaptic and presynaptic neurons. Previous works have shown that STDP may induce the appearance of directed connections from high to low-frequency spiking neurons. On the other hand, STP is attributed to the release of neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft of neurons that alter its synaptic efficiency. Our results suggest that the combined effect of STP and STDP with high recovery time facilitates the formation of connections among neurons with similar spike frequencies only, a kind of preferential attachment. We then pursue this further and show that, when starting with all-to-all neural configurations, depending on the STP recovery time and distribution of neural frequencies, modular neural networks can emerge as a direct result of the combined effect of STP and STDP., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Small-world structures are often used to describe structural connections in the brain. In this work, we compare the structural connection of cortical areas of a healthy brain and a brain affected by Alzheimer's disease with artificial small-world networks. Based on statistics analysis, we demonstrate that similar small-world networks can be constructed using Newman-Watts procedure. The network quantifiers of both structural matrices are identified inside the probabilistic valley. Despite of similarities between structural connection matrices and sampled small-world networks, increased assortativity can be found in the Alzheimer brain. Our results indicate that network quantifiers can be helpful to identify abnormalities in real structural connection matrices.

Extreme events are characterised by low probabilities and high impact on the systems. As a consequence, it is possible to find many studies about the predictability and suppression of extreme events. In this work, we show the existence of dragon-kings extreme events in nonlinear three-wave interactions. Dragon-king extreme events, identified by phase transitions, tipping points, and catastrophes, affects fluctuating systems. We show that these events can be avoided by adding a perturbing small amplitude wave to the system.

Chimera states are spatiotemporal patterns in which coherence and incoherence coexist. We observe the coexistence of synchronous (coherent) and desynchronous (incoherent) domains in a neuronal network. The network is composed of coupled adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire neurons that are connected by means of chemical synapses. In our neuronal network, the chimera states exhibit spatial structures both with spikes and bursts activities. Furthermore, those desynchronised domains not only have either spike or burst activity, but we show that the structures switch between spikes and bursts as the time evolves. Moreover, we verify the existence of multicluster chimera states.

A multicompartment mathematical model is presented with the goal of studying the role of dose-dense protocols in the context of combination cancer chemotherapy. Dose-dense protocols aim at reducing the period between courses of chemotherapy from three to two weeks or less, in order to avoid the regrowth of the tumor during the meantime and achieve maximum cell kill at the end of the treatment. Inspired by clinical trials, we carry out a randomized computational study to systematically compare a variety of protocols using two drugs of different specificity. Our results suggest that cycle specific drugs can be administered at low doses between courses of treatment to arrest the relapse of the tumor. This might be a better strategy than reducing the period between cycles.

A fundamental model of tumor growth in the presence of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents is formulated. The model allows to study the role of the Norton-Simon hypothesis in the context of dose-dense chemotherapy. Dose-dense protocols aim at reducing the period between courses of chemotherapy from three weeks to two weeks, in order to avoid tumor regrowth between cycles. We address the conditions under which these protocols might be more or less beneficial in comparison to less dense settings, depending on the sensitivity of the tumor cells to the cytotoxic drugs. The effects of varying other parameters of the protocol, as for example the duration of each continuous drug infusion, are also inspected. We believe that the present model might serve as a foundation for the development of more sophisticated models for cancer chemotherapy.

We present a brief discussion about some well known cryptography methods and how our model fails against the traditional attacks. We do not want to discourage anybody, we just want to show that, despite of the importance of developing better cryptography models, it is a very hard task.

Self-sustained activity in the brain is observed in the absence of external stimuli and contributes to signal propagation, neural coding, and dynamic stability. It also plays an important role in cognitive processes. In this work, by means of studying intracellular recordings from CA1 neurons in rats and results from numerical simulations, we demonstrate that self-sustained activity presents high variability of patterns, such as low neural firing rates and activity in the form of small-bursts in distinct neurons. In our numerical simulations, we consider random networks composed of coupled, adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire neurons. The neural dynamics in the random networks simulate regular spiking (excitatory) and fast-spiking (inhibitory) neurons. We show that both the connection probability and network size are fundamental properties that give rise to self-sustained activity in qualitative agreement with our experimental results. Finally, we provide a more detailed description of the self-sustained activity in terms of lifetime distributions, synaptic conductances, and synaptic currents.

We investigate the basin of attraction properties and its boundaries for chimera states in a circulant network of H\'enon maps. Chimera states, for which coherent and incoherent domains coexist, emerge as a consequence of the coexistence of basin of attractions for each state. It is known that the coexisting basins of attraction lead to a hysteretic behaviour in the diagrams for the density of incoherent and coherent states as a function of a varying parameter. Consequently, the distribution of chimera states can remain invariant by a parameter change, as well as it can suffer subtle changes when one of the basin ceases to exist. A similar phenomenon is observed when perturbations are applied in the initial conditions. By means of the uncertainty exponent, we characterise the basin boundaries between the coherent and chimera states, and between the incoherent and chimera states, and uncover fractal and riddled boundaries, respectively. This way, we show that the density of chimera states can be not only moderately sensitive but also highly sensitive to initial conditions. Nowadays, divertors are used in the main tokamaks to control the magnetic field and to improve the plasma confinement. In this article, we present analytical symplectic maps describing Poincar\'e maps of the magnetic field lines in confined plasmas with a single null poloidal divertor. Initially, we present a divertor map and the tokamap for a diverted configuration. We also introduce the Ullmann map for a diverted plasma, whose control parameters are determined from tokamak experiments. Finally, an explicit, area-preserving and integrable magnetic field line map for a single-null divertor tokamak is obtained using a trajectory integration method to represent toroidal equilibrium magnetic surfaces. In this method, we also give examples of onset of chaotic field lines at the plasma edge due to resonant perturbations.

The Hamiltonian of any quantum cosmological model must obey some conditions in order to be self-adjoint, or to admit self-adjoint extensions. We will consider in this paper the self-adjoint character of the Hamiltonian resulting from the Brans-Dicke theory, both in Einstein and Jordan frames. In both cases we find the wave-function solutions in order to obtain concrete predictions for the evolution of the Universe. We show that the specific cosmological scenarios obtained depend very weakly on the conditions of having a self-adjoint operator. The problem of equivalence between Einstein and Jordan frames is considered, and it is shown that this equivalence implies a specific ordering parameter, as well as a particular choice of the physical variables.

Brain plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity, is a fundamental mechanism of neuronal adaptation in response to changes in the environment or due to brain injury. In this review, we show our results about the effects of synaptic plasticity on neuronal networks composed by Hodgkin-Huxley neurons. We show that the final topology of the evolved network depends crucially on the ratio between the strengths of the inhibitory and excitatory synapses. Excitation of the same order of inhibition revels an evolved network that presents the rich-club phenomenon, well known to exist in the brain. For initial networks with considerably larger inhibitory strengths, we observe the emergence of a complex evolved topology, where neurons sparsely connected to other neurons, also a typical topology of the brain. The presence of noise enhances the strength of both types of synapses, but if the initial network has synapses of both natures with similar strengths. Finally, we show how the synchronous behaviour of the evolved network will reflect its evolved topology.

The cardiovascular system is composed of the heart, blood and blood vessels. Regarding the heart, cardiac conditions are determined by the electrocardiogram, that is a noninvasive medical procedure. In this work, we propose autoregressive process in a mathematical model based on coupled differential equations in order to model electrocardiogram signals. Our results are compared with experimental tachogram by means of Poincar\'e plot and dentrended fluctuation analysis. We verify that the results from the model with autoregressive process show good agreement with experimental measures from tachogram generated by electrical activity of the heartbeat. With the tachogram we build the electrocardiogram by means of coupled differential equations.

Chemotherapy is a class of cancer treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells. A typical chemotherapeutic protocol consists of several drugs delivered in cycles of three weeks. We present mathematical analyses demonstrating the existence of a maximum time between cycles of chemotherapy for a protocol to be effective. A mathematical equation is derived, which relates such a maximum time with the variables that govern the kinetics of the tumor and those characterizing the chemotherapeutic treatment. Our results suggest that there are compelling arguments supporting the use of dose-dense protocols. Finally, we discuss the limitations of these protocols and suggest an alternative.

We have studied neuronal synchronisation in a random network of adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire neurons. We study how spiking or bursting synchronous behaviour appears as a function of the coupling strength and the probability of connections, by constructing parameter spaces that identify these synchronous behaviours from measurements of the inter-spike interval and the calculation of the order parameter. Moreover, we verify the robustness of synchronisaton by applying an external perturbation to each neuron. The simulations show that bursting synchronisation is more robust than spike synchronisation.
