Potential strategies in addressing these gaps are proposed, such as complex systems approaches to link processes across time scales, long‐term experiments on physical‐chemical‐biological process interactions, and a focus on connectivity and patterns across spatial scales. Abstract

The article represents some results from an empirical cross-cultural study of work values and/or goals with students from Bulgaria, Hawaii (USA) and New Zealand. An adapted version for Bulgarian conditions of Vunderink and Hofstede questionnaire for students work values and/or goals and Gert Hofstede’s Value Survey Module questionnarie (VSM’94) are presented. According to Gert Hofstede theory for the five dimensions of national and/or organizational culture, the Bulgarian students differ with higher indexes of Power distance and Collectivism. 60 By contrast with them, the students from Hawaii show higher index of Masculinity and the students from New Zealand show higher indexes of Uncertainty avoidance and Long term orientation. The results show that liberal thinking and postmodern values are still in a process of mastering from the young Bulgarians after the official accession of the country in the EU.В этой статье представлены результаты крос-культурного, эмпирического исследо- вания ценностей и/или целей в труде студентов в Болгарии, на Гавайских островах (США) и в Новой Зеландии. Используется адаптированная для болгарских условий версия воп- росника Вундеринка и Гофстеде, который предназначен для измерения ценностей и/или поставленных целей в труде у студентов и вопросника Герта Гофстеде для измерения вариаций пяти базисных измерений национальной културы (VSM’94). Применение тео- рии Герта Гофстеде о пятерых измерений национальной и/или организационной културы показывает, что болгарские студенты отличаются более высоким индексом Властового расстояния и Колективизма. В отличии от них, студенты с Гавайских островах (США) имеют более высокого индекса Мужественности, а студенты Новой Зеландии отлича- ется более высоким индексом Избежания неопределенности и Ориентации на будущее. Результаты демонстрируют, что год после присоединения страны к Европейскому союзу, молодые болгары находятся в процессе усвоения либерального мышления и постмодер- ных ценностей.

International audience; The physically-based, distributed flow and sediment transport modelling system SHETRAN was applied to the Draix basins to test its ability to represent badlands flow and erosion response, to quantify characteristic parameter values and to investigate spatial scale effects in badlands modelling. A unit gully, area 0.133 ha, was simulated using a 5-m grid resolution model and a single cell model, with comparable results. Application of the modes to a badlands basin, area 86 ha, suggests that transfer of parameter sets from the gully scale to a larger scale may be feasible but, given uncertainty in parameter evaluation, a separate calibration still yields improved results. Considering the flashy basin responses, satisfactory flow simulations were achieved using physically realistic parameter values, and sediment yields were well simulated within the bounds of uncertainty. Any scale effects which may distinguish the gully and basin simulations are masked by the uncertainty in parameter evaluation.

Abstract

Nirex is responsible for the development of a deep geological repository for the disposal of solid intermediate-level and some low-level radioactive waste. In 1991 an area near Sellafield, West Cumbria was chosen as the focus for further investigations following preliminary investigation of two sites. The Nirex Science Programme is directed at establishing the suitability, or otherwise, of the site at Sellafield to host the deep repository. This requires, amongst other things, that an assessment be developed of the post-closure performance of a repository located there and that this assessment should be supported by information from a suitably designed research programme. The Nirex Safety Assessment Research Programme (NSARP) is a wide ranging programme providing detailed understanding and data on the physical, chemical and biological processes that may be of relevance to repository post-closure safety together with mathematical models describing the way that these processes operate and interact. The NSARP is principally concerned with improving our knowledge of two important pathways, groundwater and gas, through which radionuclides may return to the human environment and it is supplemented by a more engineering-orientated programme of research into the Nirex Reference Vault Backfill. Current Status Reports are intended to provide an overview of the research programme and so help to document its development. They rely on detailed information contained in Nirex reports and other documents in the public domain. The Nirex reports referred to here are mostly Nirex Safety Series (NSS) reports or the Nirex Science reports that have been introduced recently. All these reports have been produced by contractors partly or fully funded by Nirex and working under Quality Assurance arrangements which are either in strict accordance with BS5750 or, particularly for some of the earlier reports, in keeping with its intent.

Abstract

A model-based method is proposed for improving upon existing threshold relationships which define the rainfall conditions for triggering shallow landslides but do not allow the magnitude of landsliding (i.e. the number of landslides) to be determined. The SHETRAN catchment-scale shallow landslide model is used to quantify the magnitude of landsliding as a function of rainfall return period, for focus sites of 180 and 45 km2 in the Italian Southern Alps and the central Spanish Pyrenees. Rainfall events with intensities of different return period are generated for a range of durations (1-day to 5-day) and applied to the model to give the number of landslides triggered and the resulting sediment yield for each event. For a given event duration, simulated numbers of landslides become progressively less sensitive to return period as return period increases. Similarly, for an event of given return period, landslide magnitude becomes less sensitive to event duration as duration increases. The temporal distribution of rainfall within an event is shown to have a significant impact on the number of landslides and the timing of their occurrence. The contribution of shallow landsliding to catchment sediment yield is similarly quantified as a function of the rainfall characteristics. Rainfall intensity-duration curves are presented which define different levels of landsliding magnitude and which advance our predictive capability beyond, but are generally consistent with, published threshold curves. Abstract

Calibration of the rainfall and overland flow erodibility coefficients of a physically based erosion and sediment yield component for the Système Hydrologique Européen SHE modeling system is demonstrated using data from 32.54‐m2field rainfallsimulator plots with tilled, tilledtwice, clipped, grazed, and ungrazed land treatments. Good sensitivity to the major classes of treatment is exhibited, but the fine detail of variation for a given land cover is less well represented. This is a result of a lack of quantitative understanding of relevant processes that can be remedied only through detailed process studies. Good simulations of overland flow response were achieved for successive rain applications on wetted soil. Difficulties experienced in simulating overland flow response for dry soil probably resulted from poor definition of the soil hydraulic properties for dry conditions. Tests using other soil erosion data show that laboratory calibration of the erodibility coefficients is unreliable, while sensitivity of the simulated sediment yield to the input flow data indicates the need for accurate flow calibrations.

Abstract

Multi-day rainfall events appear to be an important cause of recent flooding in the UK. Hydrological data from an extensive, nested hydrometric network in the unregulated, predominantly rural Upper Eden catchment in northern England are presented for one such flood event. These highlight antecedent catchment conditions and the propagation of the multi-day flood event during February 2004. An assessment of flood response is provided over varying scales and land use between the upland Gais Gill catchment (1.1 km2) and the larger Upper Eden catchment (616 km2). Large spatial variations in rainfall totals are identified from a dense raingauge network during the flood event and are principally related to catchment elevation. High cumulative rainfall totals for the 6-day event, particularly at upland sites appear to be the exceptional feature of the flood event with return periods in the order of 100 years at some upland gauges. Resultant patterns of flood attenuation and translation are quantified in different areas of the catchment, highlighting the flashy response of the headwater catchments and the attenuated downstream response in the lowland environment. 46. Stabilising the sediment bed in laboratory flumes

Abstract

Recent laboratory investigations of alluvial channels with loose bed and banks of coarse sand required a method for immobilising or 'freezing' the loose boundary to permit time consuming hydraulic measurements without changes in the boundary geometry. A technique involving spraying separate solutions of sodium silicate and sodium bicarbonate on to a drained channel has been rediscovered, and is reported here. After freezing the changes in geometry and hydraulic roughness are negligible and some results are presented to illustrate this. The equipment and materials costs are low. Furthermore, for freezing a large area the method described has advantages, from a health and safety point of view, over using adhesives or dry cement powder as alternatives.
