Introduction: Limited or shared sanitation services are considered improved sanitation facilities, but they are shared between two or more households. Globally, 600 million people use shared toilet facilities. Although shared facilities are not classified as improved sanitation due to potential infection risks, inaccessibility, and safety concerns, this is a significant issue in developing countries like Ethiopia. Evidence on the distribution of shared sanitation services and their determinants in Ethiopia is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the extent of shared toilet facilities and their determinants among households in Ethiopia. Methods: The 2019 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) served as the basis for the cross-sectional secondary data analysis. The analysis included a total of 7,770 households from the weighted sample. STATA 14 software was used to clean, weigh, and analyze the data. To explore the distribution and determine the factors associated with shared toilet facilities in Ethiopia, both spatial and mixed-effect analyses were utilized. A p-value of less than 0.05 was used to display the relationships between the dependent and independent variables, employing adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results: The magnitude of improved shared sanitation facilities among households in Ethiopia, according to the EDHS 2019, was 10.5% (95% CI: 9.88, 11.24). The prevalence was highest in Addis Ababa at 70.2% and lowest in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region at 2.4%. Individual-level variables significantly associated with the use of improved shared toilet facilities included being a household head aged 55 years or older [AOR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.33, 0.71], having secondary education or higher [AOR = 2.43; 95% CI: 1.80, 3.28], and belonging to middle or rich wealth status [middle: AOR = 2.32; 95% CI: 1.35, 3.96; rich: AOR = 6.23; 95% CI: 3.84, 10.11]. Community-level characteristics such as residing in urban areas [AOR = 7.60; 95% CI: 3.47, 16.67], the metropolitan region [AOR = 25.83; 95% CI: 10.1, 66.3], and periphery regions [AOR = 5.01; 95% CI: 2.40, 10.48] were also associated with the use of shared toilet facilities. Conclusion: The usage of improved shared toilet facilities among households in Ethiopia is relatively low. Significant factors related to the use of shared toilet facilities were being 55 years of age or older, possessing secondary or higher education, having a middle or rich wealth status, living in urban areas, and residing in metropolitan or peripheral regions. To improve access to and utilization of shared sanitation facilities, Ethiopian policy should emphasize user education and awareness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distinctive Image Captioning (DIC)—generating distinctive captions that describe the unique details of a target image—has received considerable attention over the last few years. A recent DIC method proposes to generate distinctive captions by comparing the target image with a set of semantic-similar reference images, i.e., reference-Based DIC (Ref-DIC). It aims to force the generated captions to distinguish between the target image and the reference image. Unfortunately, reference images used by existing Ref-DIC works are easy to distinguish: these reference images only resemble the target image at scene-level and have few common objects, such that a Ref-DIC model can trivially generate distinctive captions even without considering the reference images. For example, if the target image contains objects "towel" and "toilet" while all reference images are without them, then a simple caption "A bathroom with a towel and a toilet" is distinctive enough to tell apart target and reference images. To ensure Ref-DIC models really perceive the unique objects (or attributes) in target images, we first propose two new Ref-DIC benchmarks. Specifically, we design a two-stage matching mechanism, which strictly controls the similarity between the target and reference images at the object-/attribute-level (vs. scene-level). Second, to generate distinctive captions, we develop a Transformer-based Ref-DIC baseline TransDIC. It not only extracts visual features from the target image but also encodes the differences between objects in the target and reference images. Taking one step further, we propose a stronger TransDIC \({++}\) , which consists of an extra contrastive learning module to make full use of the reference images. This new module is model-agnostic, which can be easily incorporated into various Ref-DIC architectures. Finally, for more trustworthy benchmarking, we propose a new evaluation metric named DisCIDEr for Ref-DIC, which evaluates both the accuracy and distinctiveness of the generated captions. Experimental results demonstrate that our TransDIC \({++}\) can generate distinctive captions. Besides, it outperforms several state-of-the-art models on the two new benchmarks over different metrics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While corporate social responsibility by firms aims at improving welfare for different social groups, whether it achieves this is often difficult to measure. After Apr. 2018 protests, Starbucks enacted policies that anybody could sit in their stores and use the bathroom without making a purchase. Using anonymized cellphone location data, we estimate this led to a 7.0% decline in attendance relative to other nearby coffee shops. The effect is 84% larger near homeless shelters and larger for Starbucks' wealthier customers. The average time spent per visit declined by 4.1%. Public urination citations decreased near Starbucks locations, but other minor crimes were unchanged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Aerosols generated during toilet flushing are a potential source for transmission of viral and bacterial pathogens in bathrooms. However, manual decontamination of bathrooms after each use is not feasible. Methods: We tested the efficacy of a wall-mounted far ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light technology that only delivers far UV-C when people are not present for decontamination of surfaces and aerosolized viral particles in an unoccupied hospital bathroom. A quantitative disk carrier test method was used to test efficacy against organisms on steel disk carriers placed in 9 sites in the bathroom with an exposure time of 45 min and 2 h; Clostridioides difficile spores were also exposed for 24 h. Efficacy against aerosolized bacteriophage MS2 was tested with a 45-minute exposure. Results: The far UV-C technology reduced methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), Candida auris, and bacteriophage MS2 on steel disk carriers by ≥ 1.2 log10 (range, 1.2 to 4.2 log10) at all test sites after 2 h of exposure. The technology reduced C. difficile spores by < 1 log10 after 2 h exposure, but 4 of 9 test locations had ≥ 2 log10 reductions after 24 h exposure. Aerosolized bacteriophage MS2 was reduced by 4 log10 plaque-forming units in 45 min. Conclusions: The far UV-C light technology could potentially be useful for automated decontamination of air and surfaces in bathrooms in healthcare and community settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their independent structure, piping, and access, townhouses offer great flexibility in floor plan changes and high spatial autonomy, making them the mainstream housing type in Taiwan. This study focuses on row houses and examines 2022 completion cases in Kaohsiung City. It collects floor plans from 14 newly constructed buildings, totaling 227 units, and analyzes spatial dimensions including the facade width, depth, habitable room, staircases, bathrooms, and total floor area for each case. The objective of this study is to examine the spatial layout of row houses in Kaohsiung City, with the aim of providing a reference for the future planning and design of such structures. The study results showed that 81.8% of the row houses analyzed have a total floor area per unit ranging from 136 to 192 m
2 , a facade width between 4.1 and 6.38 m, and a building depth from 7.67 to 12.68 m. In addition, they showed a low negative correlation between the facade width and total floor area, a high positive correlation between the building depth and total floor area, and a moderate negative correlation between the facade width and building depth. The spatial distribution within these houses includes 78% allocated to habitable room, 13.1% to staircases, and 8.7% to bathrooms. The total area of habitable rooms and bathrooms increases with the total floor area of the building. However, the total area of staircases remains almost constant as the area of habitable rooms increases. Furthermore, the most common location for staircase planning is the rear-right (RB) position, while the least common is the rear-left (LB) position. Among various staircase types, the C-shaped staircase has the largest average area per floor and the highest average proportion. Conversely, the I-shaped staircase has the smallest average area and the lowest average proportion. The U-shaped staircase is the most frequently planned, whereas the C-shaped staircase is the least frequently used. This means that planning of staircase location and type significantly affects the size and layout of habitable rooms and bathrooms in townhouses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The share of the aged population over and above 65 years increased from 6% in 1990 to 9% in 2019. The percentage of the aged population might increase further to 16% by 2050. Due to socio-demographic changes and nuclear family setups, elder people live alone and encounter many issues at home, especially falls, while doing their daily activities. The probability of a fall inside the bathroom is higher than a fall inside the living place due to specific hazards. Various research works have been proposed to monitor people from falls (fall detection systems -FADE) inside the home environment. However, those systems do not concentrate much on fall detection inside the bathrooms (FADEB). Alternatively, we witness certain smart gadgets for the safety of the elders inside the bathroom, which prevents them from a fall by assisting. However, these gadgets are not designed in a way to report the fall. To overview the FADEB systems, electronic databases such as PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, Google Scholar, and DBLP were used to fetch the research works published from 2007 to 2023. The FADEB papers are filtered out and critically reviewed in terms of implementation details concerning data collection, feature extraction, and classification. The specific challenges related to FADEB are quoted that need to be addressed in the near future to monitor the falls inside the bathroom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Producing prefabricated bathroom units (PBUs) involves a dry installation method that heavily relies on human labor. Therefore, strategically accomplishing efficient and agile workforce planning emphasizes the critical significance. However, previous studies that address workforce planning often overlook the long-term stochastic effects and assume a homogeneous workforce for the sake of computational simplicity. To overcome these limitations, this study adopts the Markovian approach to establish an explicit relationship between workforce cost and cycle time, considering a heterogeneous workforce and uncertain human-caused events. The proposed model has a hierarchical structure that addresses the behavioral tendencies that drive task allocation at the individual level and the aggregate effect of manpower allocation at the operation level. By integrating Little's law in queuing theory and metaheuristics optimization, the cycle time can be calculated while searching for the optimal workforce arrangement configuration. The study cross-validated the computational results with empirical data from a precast factory in Singapore and conducted a sensitivity analysis to verify the reliability. The results show that cross-training workers to multiple skills can lead to significant time savings, with a maximum of roughly 23 h saved in PBU cycle time. Ultimately, this research contributes to the body of knowledge by proposing a strategic workforce planning model that accounts for a heterogeneous workforce and uncertain human-caused events. It utilizes a partial cross-training configuration strategy to maximize productivity and flexibility for PBU production. Practical Applications: The fit-out process of prefabricated bathroom units (PBUs) relies heavily on manual labor, becoming a bottleneck in the supply chain. Efficient and agile workforce planning is critical to overcome this challenge. However, planning for a large, heterogeneous workforce for tasks in an uncertain environment is difficult. Therefore, this research aims to establish a clear relationship between workforce cost and cycle time to assist with quick decision making during the planning stage. The proposed model has a two-level hierarchical structure that addresses individual-level behavioral tendencies and the operational-level aggregate effect of manpower allocation. This approach ensures optimal workforce size, composition, cost, and flexibility for the project's needs. The model was tested using a real-world industrial case study, and the results showed that cross-training workers in multiple skills can significantly reduce PBU cycle time. The increased workforce flexibility is the main factor responsible for the time savings, with a maximum of roughly 23 h saved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
