In this paper I discuss the adoption of artistic research creation methodologies, the creation and exhibition of artistic works closely aligned with scholarly research, as a way to increase public engagement with academic research. I begin by discussing the need for scholars to consider the 'public first' when developing research communication plans, and draw upon the emergence of 'mobile first' interface design as a metaphor. With mobile first development, also known as progressive enhancement, 'You start by establishing a basic level of user experience that all browsers will be able to provide when rendering your web site,' but you also build in more advanced functionality that will automatically be available to devices, such as desktop computers (W3C 2015). I argue that we need to prioritize public first research outputs if we are truly serious about engaging the public in our research. I then move into a discussion of various research creation methodologies and explain how they are similar to, and differ from, critical making, another emergent humanities research practice that is based upon the making of physical objects. Finally I provide examples of successful research creation activities, including some related to my current SSHRC-funded project, The Post-Digital Book Arts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Why should designers of digital reading environments study the history of the book? What can the continuities and discontinuities—the successes and failures—of new developments in the book's long history teach us about its possible futures! Questions such as these often go unasked in commercial e-book design and other domains that emphasize technical innovation as their only criterion for evaluating the past. However, new reading environments challenge us to understand the role of material forms in meaning-making, and to situate e-books and digital reading devices within the changing history of books and reading. This article explores that rationale as embodied by the Architectures of the Book (ArchBook) project, an online, open-access, and peer-reviewed collection of richly illustrated essays about specific design features in the history of the book. The article discusses the development of electronic books, focusing on trends on how people are reading electronic books and how the books are being formatted to best fit on the small screens of smartphones. Other topics include the rise of wireless technology, such as smartphones, in developing countries over wired connections, a history of the printing and design of miniature books including a discussion of religious texts, such as phylactery, and the need for margin spaces for annotations, and how miniature book design can help inform the development of electronic books for smartphones.
