Abstract

© 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab. The GLUEX experiment is located in experimental Hall D at Jefferson Lab (JLab) and provides a unique capability to search for hybrid mesons in high-energy photoproduction, utilizing a ∼9 GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The initial, low-intensity phase of GLUEX was recently completed and a high-intensity phase has begun in 2020 which includes an upgraded kaon identification system, known as the DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light), utilizing components from the decommissioned BaBar DIRC. The identification of kaon final states will significantly enhance the GLUEX physics program, to aid in inferring the quark flavor content of conventional (and potentially hybrid) mesons. In these proceedings, we describe the installation of the GLUEX DIRC and the analysis of initial commissioning data.

Abstract

A proposed new high-luminosity electron–ion collider requires a polarized electron source of extremely high intensity. The MIT-Bates Laboratory, in collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), has developed a new polarized electron gun that can be operated at currents in the mA range. Abstract

type:Journal Article, Cross sections were measured for the near-threshold electrodisintegration of 3He at momentum transfer values of q=2.4, 4.4, and 4.7 fm-1. From these and prior measurements the transverse and longitudinal response functions RT and RL were deduced. Comparisons are made against previously published and new nonrelativistic A=3 calculations using the best available nucleon-nucleon NN potentials. In general, for q<2 fm-1 these calculations accurately predict the threshold electrodisintegration of 3He. Agreement at increasing q demands consideration of two-body terms, but discrepancies still appear at the highest momentum transfers probed, perhaps due to the neglect of relativistic dynamics, or to the underestimation of high-momentum wave-function components., source:http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRC/v67/e064004, source:http://www.aps.org

Abstract

An internal hydrogen target system was developed for the OLYMPUS experiment at DESY, in Hamburg, Germany. The target consisted of a long, thin-walled, tubular cell within an aluminum scattering chamber. Hydrogen entered at the center of the cell and exited through the ends, where it was removed from the beamline by a multistage pumping system. A cryogenic coldhead cooled the target cell to counteract heating from the beam and increase the density of hydrogen in the target. A fixed collimator protected the cell from synchrotron radiation and the beam halo. A series of wakefield suppressors reduced heating from beam wakefields. The target system was installed within the DORIS storage ring and was successfully operated during the course of the OLYMPUS experiment in 2012. Abstract

A design for a compact x-ray light source (CXLS) with flux and brilliance orders of magnitude beyond existing laboratory scale sources is presented. The source is based on inverse Compton scattering of a high brightness electron bunch on a picosecond laser pulse. The accelerator is a novel high-efficiency standing-wave linac and rf photoinjector powered by a single ultrastable rf transmitter at X-band rf frequency. The high efficiency permits operation at repetition rates up to 1 kHz, which is further boosted to 100 kHz by operating with trains of 100 bunches of 100 pC charge, each separated by 5 ns. The entire accelerator is approximately 1 meter long and produces hard x rays tunable over a wide range of photon energies. The colliding laser is a Yb∶YAG solid-state amplifier producing 1030 nm, 100 mJ pulses at the same 1 kHz repetition rate as the accelerator. The laser pulse is frequency-doubled and stored for many passes in a ringdown cavity to match the linac pulse structure. At a photon energy of 12.4 keV, the predicted x-ray flux is 5×10[superscript 11] photons/second in a 5% bandwidth and the brilliance is 2 × 10[superscript 12] photons/(sec mm[superscript 2] mrad[superscript 2] 0.1%) in pulses with rms pulse length of 490 fs. The nominal electron beam parameters are 18 MeV kinetic energy, 10 microamp average current, 0.5 microsecond macropulse length, resulting in average electron beam power of 180 W. Optimization of the x-ray output is presented along with design of the accelerator, laser, and x-ray optic components that are specific to the particular characteristics of the Compton scattered x-ray pulses., United States. Abstract

We report a precision measurement of the deuteron tensor analyzing powers T[subscript 20] and T[subscript 21] at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. Data were collected simultaneously over a momentum transfer range Q=2.15–4.50 fm[superscript -1] with the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid using a highly polarized deuterium internal gas target. The data are in excellent agreement with calculations in a framework of effective field theory. The deuteron charge monopole and quadrupole form factors G[subscript C] and G[subscript Q] were separated with improved precision, and the location of the first node of G[subscript C] was confirmed at Q=4.19±0.05 fm[superscript -1]. The new data provide a strong constraint on theoretical models in a momentum transfer range covering the minimum of T[subscript 20] and the first node of G[subscript C]., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract

Experimental details of a virtual Compton scattering (VCS) experiment performed on the proton at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility are presented. The VCS response functions P[scubscript LL]−P[scubscript TT]/P[scubscript TT]ɛɛ and P[scubscript LT] have been measured at Q[superscript 2]=0.057 GeV[superscript 2]/c[superscript 2]. The generalized electric and magnetic polarizabilities, α(Q[superscript 2]) and β(Q[superscript 2]), and the mean-square electric polarizability radius(r[subscript α][superscript 2]) are obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data. The results are in good agreement with O(p[superscript 3]) heavy baryon chiral perturbation and indicate the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities., United States. Abstract

We present the measurement of nonphotonic electron production at high transverse momentum (pT>2.5 GeV/c) [(p subscript T > 2.5 GeV/c)] in p+p collisions at √s=200 [square root of s=200] GeV using data recorded during 2005 and 2008 by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured cross sections from the two runs are consistent with each other despite a large difference in photonic background levels due to different detector configurations. We compare the measured nonphotonic electron cross sections with previously published RHIC data and perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using the relative contributions of B and D mesons to nonphotonic electrons, we determine the integrated cross sections of electrons (e++e-/2) [e superscript + plus e superscript - /2)] at 3 GeV/c

Abstract

We report the first measurements of the kurtosis (κ [kappa]), skewness (S), and variance (σ [sigma] [superscript 2]) of net-proton multiplicity (N [subscript p]-N [subscript p̅] ) distributions at midrapidity for Au+Au collisions at √sNN=19.6, 62.4, and 200 GeV corresponding to baryon chemical potentials (μ [mu] B) between 200 and 20 MeV. Our measurements of the products κ [kappa]σ [sigma][superscript 2] and Sσ [sigma], which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long-range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the √sNN dependence of κ [kappa] σ [sigma] [superscript 2]. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for μ [mu] [subscript B] below 200 MeV., United States. Dept. of Energy. Abstract

We report on a measurement of the Υ(1S+2S+3S)→e+e- cross section at midrapidity in p+p collisions at √s=200 GeV. We find the cross section to be 114±38(stat+fit)-24+23(syst) pb. Perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the color evaporation model are in agreement with our measurement, while calculations in the color singlet model underestimate it by 2σ [sigma]. Our result is consistent with the trend seen in world data as a function of the center-of-mass energy of the collision and extends the availability of Υ data to RHIC energies. The dielectron continuum in the invariant-mass range near the Υ is also studied to obtain a combined yield of e+e- pairs from the sum of the Drell-Yan process and b-b̅ production., United States. Abstract

We report first results from an analysis based on a new multi-hadron correlation technique, exploring jet-medium interactions and di-jet surface emission bias at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Pairs of back-to-back high-transverse-momentum hadrons are used for triggers to study associated hadron distributions. In contrast with two- and three-particle correlations with a single trigger with similar kinematic selections, the associated hadron distribution of both trigger sides reveals no modification in either relative pseudorapidity Δη [delta eta] or relative azimuthal angle Δϕ [delta phi] from d+Au to central Au+Au collisions. We determine associated hadron yields and spectra as well as production rates for such correlated back-to-back triggers to gain additional insights on medium properties., United States. Abstract

The STAR Collaboration at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured two-pion correlation functions from p+p collisions at √s=200 [square root of s = 200] GeV. Spatial scales are extracted via a femtoscopic analysis of the correlations, though this analysis is complicated by the presence of strong nonfemtoscopic effects. Our results are put into the context of the world data set of femtoscopy in hadron-hadron collisions. Abstract

The contribution of B meson decays to nonphotonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons, in p+p collisions at √s=200 [square root of s=200] GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between nonphotonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted B decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT≥5 [rho subscript tau ≥5] GeV/c. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from B and D meson decays. The result indicates that B meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pT [rho subscript tau]., United States. Dept. of Energy. Office of Nuclear Physics, United States. Abstract

The roles played by mesons in the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon are explored using as a basis a model containing vector mesons with coupling to the continuum together with the asymptotic Q2 [Q superscript 2] behavior of perturbative QCD. Specifically, the vector dominance model (GKex) developed by E. L. Lomon is employed, as it is known to be very successful in representing the existing high-quality data published to date. An analysis is made of the experimental uncertainties present when the differences between the GKex model and the data are expanded in orthonormal basis functions. A main motivation for the present study is to provide insight into how the various ingredients in this model yield the measured behavior, including discussions of when dipole form factors are to be expected or not, of which mesons are the major contributors, for instance, at low Q2 [Q superscript 2] or large distances, and of what effects are predicted from coupling to the continuum. Such insights are first discussed in momentum space, followed by an analysis of how different and potentially useful information emerges when both the experimental and theoretical electric form factors are Fourier transformed to coordinate space. While these Fourier transforms should not be interpreted as “charge distributions,” nevertheless the roles played by the various mesons, especially those which are dominant at large or small distance scales, can be explored via such experiment–theory comparisons., United States. Abstract

We report the first three-particle coincidence measurement in pseudorapidity (delta eta) between a high transverse momentum (p⊥) trigger particle and two lower p⊥ associated particles within azimuth |deltaphi|<0.7 in [sqrt]sNN=200 GeV d+Au and Au+Au collisions. Charge ordering properties are exploited to separate the jetlike component and the ridge (long range delta eta correlation). The results indicate that the correlation of ridge particles are uniform not only with respect to the trigger particle but also between themselves event by event in our measured delta eta. In addition, the production of the ridge appears to be uncorrelated to the presence of the narrow jetlike component., United States. Dept. of Energy. Office of Science, United States. Abstract

Parity-odd domains, corresponding to nontrivial topological solutions of the QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the system’s orbital momentum axis. We investigate a three-particle azimuthal correlator which is a P even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect. We report measurements of charged hadrons near center-of-mass rapidity with this observable in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at [sqrt s[subscript NN]]=200 GeV using the STAR detector. A signal consistent with several expectations from the theory is detected. Abstract

An internal hydrogen target system was developed for the OLYMPUS experiment at DESY, in Hamburg, Germany. The target consisted of a long, thin-walled, tubular cell within an aluminum scattering chamber. Hydrogen entered at the center of the cell and exited through the ends, where it was removed from the beamline by a multistage pumping system. A cryogenic coldhead cooled the target cell to counteract heating from the beam and increase the density of hydrogen in the target. A fixed collimator protected the cell from synchrotron radiation and the beam halo. A series of wakefield suppressors reduced heating from beam wakefields. Abstract

We report on the highest precision yet achieved in the measurement of the polarization of a low-energy, O(1 GeV), continuous-wave (CW) electron beam, accomplished using a new polarimeter based on electron-photon scattering, in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. A number of technical innovations were necessary, including a novel method for precise control of the laser polarization in a cavity and a novel diamond microstrip detector that was able to capture most of the spectrum of scattered electrons. The data analysis technique exploited track finding, the high granularity of the detector, and its large acceptance. Abstract

A design for a compact x-ray light source (CXLS) with flux and brilliance orders of magnitude beyond existing laboratory scale sources is presented. The source is based on inverse Compton scattering of a high brightness electron bunch on a picosecond laser pulse. The accelerator is a novel high-efficiency standing-wave linac and rf photoinjector powered by a single ultrastable rf transmitter at X-band rf frequency. The high efficiency permits operation at repetition rates up to 1 kHz, which is further boosted to 100 kHz by operating with trains of 100 bunches of 100 pC charge, each separated by 5 ns. The entire accelerator is approximately 1 meter long and produces hard x rays tunable over a wide range of photon energies. The colliding laser is a Yb∶YAG solid-state amplifier producing 1030 nm, 100 mJ pulses at the same 1 kHz repetition rate as the accelerator. The laser pulse is frequency-doubled and stored for many passes in a ringdown cavity to match the linac pulse structure. At a photon energy of 12.4 keV, the predicted x-ray flux is 5×10[superscript 11] photons/second in a 5% bandwidth and the brilliance is 2 × 10[superscript 12] photons/(sec mm[superscript 2] mrad[superscript 2] 0.1%) in pulses with rms pulse length of 490 fs. The nominal electron beam parameters are 18 MeV kinetic energy, 10 microamp average current, 0.5 microsecond macropulse length, resulting in average electron beam power of 180 W. Optimization of the x-ray output is presented along with design of the accelerator, laser, and x-ray optic components that are specific to the particular characteristics of the Compton scattered x-ray pulses., United States. Abstract

We report a precision measurement of the deuteron tensor analyzing powers T(20) and T(21) at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. Data were collected simultaneously over a momentum transfer range Q=2.15-4.50 fm(-1) with the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid using a highly polarized deuterium internal gas target. The data are in excellent agreement with calculations in a framework of effective field theory. The deuteron charge monopole and quadrupole form factors G(C) and G(Q) were separated with improved precision, and the location of the first node of G(C) was confirmed at Q=4.19±0.05 fm(-1). The new data provide a strong constraint on theoretical models in a momentum transfer range covering the minimum of T(20) and the first node of G(C)., (© 2011 American Physical Society)

Abstract

We report the first precision measurement of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio from spin-dependent elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized hydrogen internal gas target. The measurement was performed at the MIT-Bates South Hall Ring over a range of four-momentum transfer squared Q2 from 0.15 to 0.65 (GeV/c)(2). Significantly improved results on the proton electric and magnetic form factors are obtained in combination with existing cross-section data on elastic electron-proton scattering in the same Q2 region.

49. Coherent THz synchrotron radiation from a storage ring with high-frequency RF system.

Abstract

The generation of brilliant, stable, and broadband coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in electron storage rings depends strongly on ring rf system properties such as frequency and gap voltage. We have observed intense coherent radiation at frequencies approaching the THz regime produced by the MIT-Bates South Hall Ring, which employs a high-frequency S-band rf system. The measured CSR spectral intensity enhancement with 2 mA stored current was up to 10,000 times above background for wave numbers near 3 cm(-1). The measurements also uncovered strong beam instabilities that must be suppressed if such a very high rf frequency electron storage ring is to become a viable coherent THz source.
