Abstract

Let $(M,\omega)$ be a Hamiltonian $G$-space with a momentum map $F:M \to {\frak g}^*$. It is well-known that if $\alpha$ is a regular value of $F$ and $G$ acts freely and properly on the level set $F^{-1}(G\cdot \alpha)$, then the reduced space $M_\alpha :=F^{-1}(G\cdot \alpha)/G$ is a symplectic manifold. We show that if the regularity assumptions are dropped the space $M_\alpha $ is a union of symplectic manifolds, and that the symplectic manifolds fit together in a nice way. In other words the reduced space is a {\em symplectic stratified space}. This extends results known for the Hamiltonian action of compact groups., Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX

22. Barriers and enablers of intercropping and enhanced crop diversification in the UK

Abstract

The barriers and enablers of enhanced crop diversification were investigated by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) through workshops and case studies undertaken as part of three separate collaborative projects in 2019–2020. The main enablers identified were the perceived benefits of soil health and crop protection. The main barriers highlighted were the cost and availability of suitable machinery for drilling and harvesting, as well as grain separation for certain markets. Increasing the uptake of intercropping and enhanced crop diversification on a larger scale in the UK requires effective knowledge exchange to highlight opportunities and benefits and help overcome practical barriers.

Abstract

Responding to domestic violence and abuse (DVA) poses significant challenges for the criminal justice system, with recent studies highlighting a number of significant gaps and failings in the nature of the police response in particular. This paper reports on findings from a component of the multi-stage ESRC funded project 'Justice, Inequality and Gender-Based Violence' (ESRC grant ES/M010090/1) that relates to 400 reported incidents of DVA involving intimate partners recorded by two police force areas in England in 2014. Drawing on this large data set concerning a wide range of incidents, this paper employs quantitative methods to analyse the trajectories of reports made to the police, and the factors that may influence their progress through, or attrition from the criminal justice system. In doing so, this paper finds that certain 'inequality' factors such as victim gender, vulnerability (including mental health) and incident type are found to impact the progression of cases through the criminal justice system. This work seeks to build on our understanding of what happens to incidents of DVA that are brought to the attention of the police by victims and survivors, and reflects upon how the outcomes of such incidents impact the broader debate concerning the pursuit of a formal, or criminal 'justice' in cases of DVA. 39. Barriers & Enablers of Intercropping and Enhanced Crop Diversification in the UK

Abstract

Increasingly volatile weather conditions and extreme weather events have increased challenges in pest management in single variety cropping. A need to enhance Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has led to the use of plant species mixtures or ‘plant teams’ to optimise performance, improve yield stability, reduce pest and disease damage and enhance stress resilience in agricultural systems. Combined with supporting Integrated Farm Management (IFM) practices, intercropping, in field crop mixtures and other examples of enhanced crop diversification have gained attention in recent years due to the beneficial effects of soil fertility, nutrient recycling and pest, weed and disease management. However, uptake remains limited in the UK. Barriers to and opportunities presented by enhanced crop diversification are illustrated through a series of case studies from across three projects LEAF collaborated on between 2017 and 2020. Enablers and barriers to adoption of enhanced crop diversification are illustrated, concluding that a range of approaches will be necessary to support upscaling of these practices in the UK.

Abstract

There are no current descriptions of general anaesthesia characteristics for obstetric surgery, despite recent changes to patient baseline characteristics and airway management guidelines. This analysis of data from the direct reporting of awareness in maternity patients' (DREAMY) study of accidental awareness during obstetric anaesthesia aimed to describe practice for obstetric general anaesthesia in England and compare with earlier surveys and best-practice recommendations. Consenting patients who received general anaesthesia for obstetric surgery in 72 hospitals from May 2017 to August 2018 were included. Baseline characteristics, airway management, anaesthetic techniques and major complications were collected. Descriptive analysis, binary logistic regression modelling and comparisons with earlier data were conducted. Data were collected from 3117 procedures, including 2554 (81.9%) caesarean deliveries. Thiopental was the induction drug in 1649 (52.9%) patients, compared with propofol in 1419 (45.5%). Suxamethonium was the neuromuscular blocking drug for tracheal intubation in 2631 (86.1%), compared with rocuronium in 367 (11.8%). Difficult tracheal intubation was reported in 1 in 19 (95%CI 1 in 16-22) and failed intubation in 1 in 312 (95%CI 1 in 169-667). Obese patients were over-represented compared with national baselines and associated with difficult, but not failed intubation. There was more evidence of change in practice for induction drugs (increased use of propofol) than neuromuscular blocking drugs (suxamethonium remains the most popular). There was evidence of improvement in practice, with increased monitoring and reversal of neuromuscular blockade (although this remains suboptimal). Despite a high risk of difficult intubation in this population, videolaryngoscopy was rarely used (1.9%).

Abstract

Background: Asthma is one of the leading chronic illnesses among children in the United States. Asthma prevalence is higher among African Americans (11.2%) compared to European Americans (7.7%). Bronchodilator medications are part of the first-line therapy, and the rescue medication, for acute asthma symptoms. Bronchodilator drug response (BDR) varies substantially among different racial/ethnic groups. Asthma prevalence in African Americans is only 3.5% higher than that of European Americans, however, asthma mortality among African Americans is four times that of European Americans; variation in BDR may play an important role in explaining this health disparity. To improve our understanding of disparate health outcomes in complex phenotypes such as BDR, it is important to consider interactions between environmental and biological variables. Results: We evaluated the impact of pairwise and three-variable interactions between environmental, social, and biological variables on BDR in 233 African American youth with asthma using Visualization of Statistical Epistasis Networks (ViSEN). ViSEN is a non-parametric entropy-based approach able to quantify interaction effects using an information-theory metric known as Information Gain (IG). We performed analyses in the full dataset and in sex-stratified subsets. Our analyses identified several interaction models significantly, and suggestively, associated with BDR. The strongest interaction significantly associated with BDR was a pairwise interaction between pre-natal smoke exposure and socioeconomic status (full dataset IG: 2.78%, Conclusions: Our study identified novel interaction effects significantly, and suggestively, associated with BDR in African American children with asthma. Notably, we found that all of the interactions identified by ViSEN were "pure" interaction effects, in that they were not the result of strong main effects on BDR, highlighting the complexity of the network of biological and environmental factors

Abstract

A major challenge in single-molecule imaging is tracking the dynamics of proteins or complexes for long periods of time in the dense environments found in living cells. Here, we introduce the concept of using FRET to enhance the photophysical properties of photo-modulatable (PM) fluorophores commonly used in such studies. By developing novel single-molecule FRET pairs, consisting of a PM donor fluorophore (either mEos3.2 or PA-JF549) next to a photostable acceptor dye JF646, we demonstrate that FRET competes with normal photobleaching kinetic pathways to increase the photostability of both donor fluorophores. This effect was further enhanced using a triplet-state quencher. Our approach allows us to significantly improve single-molecule tracking of chromatin-binding proteins in live mammalian cells. In addition, it provides a novel way to track the localization and dynamics of protein complexes by labeling one protein with the PM donor and its interaction partner with the acceptor dye., Single molecule tracking of fluorescent proteins in live cells is temporally limited by fluorophore photobleaching. Here the authors show using fluorophore pairs that FRET competes with photobleaching to improve photostability and allow longer-term tracking of both single proteins and complexes.
