Abstract

There is currently intensive research into creating a large-scale quantum computer with trapped ions. It is well known that for a linear ion crystal in a harmonic potential, the ions near the center are more closely spaced compared to the ions near the ends. This is problematic as the number of ions increases. Here, we consider a linear ion crystal in an anharmonic potential that is purely quartic in position. We find that the ions are more evenly spaced compared to the harmonic case. We develop a variational approach to calculate the properties of the ground state. Abstract

Tropical sea surface temperature (SST) biases can cause atmospheric biases on global scales, hence SST needs to be represented well in climate models. A major source of uncertainties is the representation of turbulent mixing in the oceanic boundary layer, or mixed layer (ML). In the present study we focus on near-inertial wave (NIW) induced mixing. The performance of two mixing schemes, Turbulent Kinetic Energy and K-profile parameterization (KPP), is assessed at two sites (11.5°N, 23°W and 15°N, 38°W) in the tropical Atlantic. At 11.5°N, turbulence observations (eddy diffusivities, shear and stratification) are available for comparison. We find that the schemes differ in their representation of NIWs, but both under-represent the observed enhanced diffusivities below the observed ML. However, we find that the models do mix below the ML at 15°N when a storm passes nearby. The near-inertial oscillations remain below the ML for the following 10 days. Near-inertial kinetic energy (NIKE) biases in the models are not directly correlated with the wind speed, the MLD biases, or the stratification at the ML base. Instead, NIKE biases are sensitive to the vertical mixing scheme parameterization. NIKE biases are lowest when the KPP scheme is used. Key Points: - Observations of inertial oscillations are used to evaluate the performance of two vertical mixing schemes in two high-resolution models - Both the K-profile parameterization and the Turbulent Kinetic Energy closure underestimate the NIW-induced mixing - Near-inertial kinetic energy biases are sensitive to the vertical mixing parameterization

Abstract

International audience; In this study we use regional modeling to detect the onset of the West African Monsoon (WAM). We use the Weather, Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in order to simulate two contrasting years: 2005 and 2006 for which the difference of the timing of the WAM onset (abrupt displacement of the ITCZ from 5°N to 10°N approximately) is significant (larger than the climatological variance) and is associated with a delay of the presence of the cold tongue in the Gulf of Guinea. 2006 is used as the reference year since the Special Observing Period (SOP) of the AMMA experiment is helpful to evaluate the model's ability to simulate the WAM dynamics. To evaluate the relative importance of the processes implicated in the WAM dynamics, we perform three simulations in which we shift one of the SST, large scale or solar forcings at a time by fifteen days. We then compare the timing of the onset, the location and intensity of the precipitations. The diagnostic we use for the onset detection is based on the seasonal and latitudinal variability of the precipitation as the WAM onset is signaled by a considerable decrease of convection which lasts a few days and thereafter by a northerly displacement of the ITCZ. Our domain of interest extends from 40 °W to 40 °E and from 20 °S to 50 °N with an horizontal resolution of 40km. The first results show a great sensitivity of the model to the large scale forcing which also seems to mainly control the timing of the onset. Moreover, the temperature gradient between the sea and the land seems to have limited impact on the timing of the WAM onset, but it mainly controls the inland humidity advection and in consequence the intensity and localization of rainfall. To confirm these results, we will apply the SST forcing of 2005 on simulation of 2006 and vice-versa to determine the connection between the SST of the Guinean Gulf and the WAM onset.
