Alternaria brown spot - ABS (Alternaria alternata) causes lesions on fruits, leaves and branches of mandarins. The cost of fungicide application is high and alternative managements for the control need to be studied. We aimed to evaluate calcium (Ca) nutrition to mitigate the effects of ABS. Murcott IAC 221 tangor plants were nourished with calcium nitrate at three different concentrations (30, 150 and 300 mg Ca L-1), and the N content was standardized in the nutrient solution of the treatments (245 mg L-1 of N) with ammonium nitrate. In vitro and in vivo tests were installed, evaluating the severity and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), total proteins, peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), during four times. In all evaluations a negative correlation was observed between leaf Ca content and the severity and AUDPC of ABS. On the other hand, there was a positive correlation between N and the occurrence of the disease. In the treatment with the lowest concentration of calcium there was accumulation of H2O2 and hypersensitivity reaction (HR), with low detoxification of H2O2 by CAT. There is potential for use of calcium supply to plants of Murcott IAC 221 tangor as an alternative management against the fungus A. alternata. Resumo A mancha marrom de alternária – MMA (Alternaria alternata) causa lesões em frutos, folhas e ramos de tangerinas. O custo da aplicação de fungicidas é alto, e manejos alternativos para o controle precisam ser estudados. Objetivou-se avaliar a nutrição com cálcio (Ca), para mitigar os efeitos da MMA. Plantas de tangor Murcott IAC 221 foram nutridas com nitrato de cálcio em três concentrações diferentes (30; 150 e 300 mg Ca L-1), sendo o teor de N padronizado na solução nutritiva dos tratamentos (245 mg L-1 de N) com nitrato de amônia. Testes in vitro e in vivo foram instalados, avaliando-se a severidade e a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AUDPC), proteínas totais, peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superóxido dismutase (SOD) e peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2), durante quatro tempos. Em todas as avaliações, observou-se correlação negativa entre o teor foliar de Ca e a severidade e AUDPC da MMA. Por outro lado, houve correlação positiva entre N e a ocorrência da doença. No tratamento com a menor concentração de cálcio, houve acúmulo de H2O2 e reação de hipersensibilidade (RH), com baixa detoxificação de H2O2 pela CAT. Há potencial para uso do suprimento com cálcio às plantas de tangor Murcott IAC 221 como manejo alternativo contra fungo o A. alternata.

Alternaria brown spot (ABS) disease is caused by the fungus of Alternaria alternata f. sp. citri, which causes injury in leaves, branches and fruits of citrus. The action of the pathogen is directly related to the presence of toxin receptors in susceptible genotypes. The objective of this study was to characterize a population of citrus hybrids obtained from controlled crosses between Pêra de Abril sweet orange and the hybrid of Murcott tangor x Pêra sweet orange (TM x LP 163) for response to ABS through the in vitro inoculation of fungal spores in young detached leaves. The fungus was isolated from the lesions of Murcott tangor fruits that exhibited ABS symptoms. Two hundred thirty-five hybrids were evaluated, and 70 (30%) showed different levels of disease symptoms on detached leaves after 72 hours of inoculation with the fungus, and 165 (70%) were asymptomatic. The frequency of segregation observed (165R:70S) and high level of heritability (h2g = 0.91) suggest that few genes may be involved in controlling the inheritance of ABS resistance in citrus. RESUMO A mancha marrom de alternaria (MMA) é uma doença causada pelo fungo Alternaria alternata f. sp. citri, que causa lesões em frutos, folhas e ramos de citros. A ação do patógeno está diretamente relacionada à presença de receptores de toxina em genótipos suscetíveis. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar uma população de híbridos de citros obtidos a partir de cruzamentos controlados entre a laranja Pêra de Abril e o híbrido de tangor Murcott x laranja Pêra (TM x LP 163) para resposta à MMA através da inoculação in vitro de esporos do fungo em folhas jovens destacadas. Um isolado do fungo foi obtido das lesões de frutos de tangor Murcott que exibiram sintomas de MMA. Duzentos e trinta e cinco híbridos foram avaliados, sendo que 70 (30%) apresentaram níveis diferentes de sintomas de doença em folhas destacadas após 72 horas da inoculação com o fungo e 165 (70%) foram assintomáticos. A frequência de segregação observada (165R:70S) e alta herdabilidade (h2g = 0,91) sugerem que poucos genes podem estar envolvidos no controle da herança da resistência à MMA em citros.

Citrus leprosis is considered the main viral disease for the Brazilian citrus production, particularly for the State of São Paulo, due to the high costs spent for the chemical control of its vector, the tenuipalpid mite Brevipalpus phoenicis. In addition, its global importance has significantly increased in the last years, with the dissemination of the virus to new countries in South and Central America. In Brazil, despite its economical importance and occurrence for more than seven decades, the most significant advances towards understanding the pathosystem interactions have been obtained only in the last ten years. This review focuses on various aspects of the disease, beginning with a historical view, its main characteristics, alternatives for its control, its increasing economical importance in Brazil and abroad, and the new data on the search for understanding the interactions amongst the mite vector, the virus, and the plant host.

In addition, its global importance has significantly increased in the last years, with the dissemination of the virus to new countries in South and Central America. In Brazil, despite its economical importance and occurrence for more than seven decades, the most significant advances towards understanding the pathosystem interactions have been obtained only in the last ten years. This review focuses on various aspects of the disease, beginning with a historical view, its main characteristics, alternatives for its control, its increasing economical importance in Brazil and abroad, and the new data on the search for understanding the interactions amongst the mite vector, the virus, and the plant host. A leprose dos citros é considerada a principal virose na citricultura brasileira, com maior destaque no Estado de São Paulo, principalmente pelos altos custos demandados para o controle químico do vetor, o ácaro Brevipalpus phoenicis. Além da relevância dessa virose para a citricultura local, sua importância mundial vem sendo ampliada consideravelmente nos últimos anos, principalmente com a disseminação do vírus em novos países da América do Sul e Central. No Brasil, apesar da sua importância econômica e ocorrência por mais de sete décadas, os mais importantes avanços no entendimento das interações do patossistema leprose têm sido obtidos apenas nos últimos dez anos. Essa revisão aborda os diferentes aspectos dessa doença, trazendo um breve histórico da doença, principais características da leprose, alternativas de controle, sua crescente importância econômica na cadeia citrícola nacional, os mais recentes relatos de sua ocorrência em outros países e os novos resultados obtidos pela pesquisa buscando um melhor entendimento das interações entre ácaro, vírus e hospedeiro vegetal.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a diversidade genética, através do marcador molecular RAPD, dos porta-enxertos da Coleção de Citros da Estação Experimental Agronômica da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (EEA/UFRGS) e acessos de porta-enxertos cítricos coletados em viveiristas da Região do Vale do Rio Caí do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Para tanto, coletaram-se folhas de nove porta-enxertos cítricos da EEA/UFRGS e de dez acessos de trifoliata (Poncirus trifoliata) de viveiristas. Com o uso de nove seqüências inicializadoras, foi possível separar os porta-enxertos cítricos em dois grupos principais, um formado pelo limoeiro ‘Cravo’ e outro pelo trifoliata e seus híbridos, apresentando alta dissimilaridade genética entre os grupos. Marcadores moleculares RAPD foram eficientes para caracterizar variedades de porta-enxertos de citros e para separar o porta-enxerto P. trifoliata de seus híbridos podendo serem utilizados para caracterização de plantas matrizes, análise de variabilidade genética entre genitores em programas de melhoramento genético de porta-enxertos e para identificar a origem sexual ou nucelar de mudas de trifoliata em viveiros comerciais. This research intended to characterize the genetic diversity of citrus rootstocks from the Experimental Agronomic Station of the Rio Grande do Sul Federal University (EEA/UFRGS) and rootstocks collected in nurseries of the Cai River Valley - Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. The method used was the Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Leaves of nine citrus rootstocks from EEA/UFRGS and ten accesses of trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) from different nurseries were collected. With the use of nine random primers it was possible to separate the rootstocks in two main groups: one formed by ‘Rangpur’ lime (Citrus limonia) and the other by trifoliate orange and its hybrids of low genetic similarity. RAPD molecular marker was very efficient for the citrus rootstock characterization and for the trifoliate orange separation from its hybrids. The technique might be used to characterize cultivars, analysis of genetic variability among progenitors in improvement breeding programs of rootstock , and identify zygotic seedlings of trifoliate orange in commercial nurseries.
