Abstract

The performance of the LAND neutron detector is studied. Using an event-mixing technique based on one-neutron data obtained in the S107 experiment at the GSI laboratory, we test the efficiency of various analytic tools used to determine the multiplicity and kinematic properties of detected neutrons. A new algorithm developed recently for recognizing neutron showers from spectator decays in the ALADIN experiment S254 is described in detail. Its performance is assessed in comparison with other methods. The properties of the observed neutron events are used to estimate the detection efficiency of LAND in this experiment., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Data on inclusive dielectron production are presented for the reaction p+p at 2.2 GeV measured with the High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES). Our results supplement data obtained earlier in this bombarding energy regime by DLS and HADES. The comparison with the 2.09 GeV DLS data is discussed. The reconstructed e+e- distributions are confronted with simulated pair cocktails, revealing an excess yield at invariant masses around 0.5 GeV/c2. Inclusive cross sections of neutral pion and eta production are obtained.

Abstract

We present measurements of exclusive \pi^{+,0} and \eta\ production in pp reactions at 1.25 GeV and 2.2 GeV beam kinetic energy in hadron and dielectron channels. In the case of \pi^+ and \pi^0, high-statistics invariant-mass and angular distributions are obtained within the HADES acceptance as well as acceptance corrected distributions, which are compared to a resonance model. The sensitivity of the data to the yield and production angular distribution of \Delta(1232) and higher lying baryon resonances is shown, and an improved parameterization is proposed. The extracted cross sections are of special interest in the case of pp \to pp \eta, since controversial data exist at 2.0 GeV; we find \sigma =0.142 \pm 0.022 mb. Using the dielectron channels, the \pi^0 and \eta\ Dalitz decay signals are reconstructed with yields fully consistent with the hadronic channels. The electron invariant masses and acceptance corrected helicity angle distributions are found in good agreement with model predictions., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, to be published in EPJA

Abstract

We present transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distribution and multiplicity of Lambda-hyperons measured with the HADES spectrometer in the reaction Ar(1.76A GeV)+KCl. The yield of Xi- is calculated from our previously reported Xi-/(Lambda+Sigma0) ratio and compared to other strange particle multiplicities. Employing a strangeness balance equation the multiplicities of the yet unmeasured charged Sigma hyperons can be estimated. Finally a statistical hadronization model is used to fit the yields of pi-, K+, K0s, K-, phi, Lambda and Xi-. The resulting chemical freeze-out temperature of T=(76+-2) MeV is compared to the measured slope parameters obtained from fits to the transverse mass distributions of the particles.

Abstract

The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen Synchrotron (SIS). Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model for a properly chosen ensemble of excited sources were performed. The parameters of the ensemble, representing the variety of excited spectator nuclei expected in a participant-spectator scenario, are determined empirically by searching for an optimum reproduction of the measured fragment-charge distributions and correlations. An overall very good agreement is obtained. The possible modification of the liquid-drop parameters of the fragment description in the hot freeze-out environment is studied, and a significant reduction of the symmetry-term coefficient is found necessary to reproduce the mean neutron-to-proton ratios /Z and the isoscaling parameters of Z<=10 fragments. The calculations are, furthermore, used to address open questions regarding the modification of the surface-term coefficient at freeze-out, the N/Z dependence of the nuclear caloric curve, and the isotopic evolution of the spectator system between its formation during the initial cascade stage of the reaction and its subsequent breakup., Comment: 23 pages, 29 figures, published in Physical Review C

Abstract

We present the transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions of $\pi^{-}$ and K$^0_S$ in Ar+KCl reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.756 A GeV measured with the spectrometer HADES. The reconstructed K$^0_S$ sample is characterized by good event statistics for a wide range in momentum and rapidity. We compare the experimental $\pi^{-}$ and K$^0_S$ distributions to predictions by the IQMD model. The model calculations show that K$^0_S$ at low tranverse momenta constitute a particularly well suited tool to investigate the kaon in-medium potential. Our K$^0_S$ data suggest a strong repulsive in-medium K$^0$ potential of about 40 MeV strength., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

Results on $\Lambda$p femtoscopy are reported at the lowest energy so far. At a beam energy of 1.76A~GeV, the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $\Lambda$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of $\Lambda$ p correlations at small relative momenta. The experimental correlation function is compared to corresponding model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the $\Lambda$p emission source. The $\Lambda$p source radius is found slightly smaller than the pp correlation radius for a similar collis ion system. The present $\Lambda$p radius is significantly smaller than that found for Au+Au/Pb+Pb collisio ns in the AGS, SPS and RHIC energy domains, but larger than that observed for electroproduction from He. Taking into account all available data, we find the $\Lambda$p source radius to increase almost linearly with the number of participants to the power of one-third., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

A phase transition signature associated with cumulants of the largest fragment size distribution has been identified in statistical multifragmentation models and examined in analysis of the ALADIN S254 data on fragmentation of neutron-poor and neutron-rich projectiles. Characteristics of the transition point indicated by this signature are weakly dependent on the A/Z ratio of the fragmenting spectator source. In particular, chemical freeze-out temperatures are estimated within the range 5.9 to 6.5 MeV. Abstract

We report first results on a deep sub-threshold production of the doubly strange hyperon $\Xi^-$ in a heavy-ion reaction. At a beam energy of 1.76A GeV the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $\Lambda$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of the decay channel $\Xi^- \to \Lambda \pi^-$. The deduced $\Xi^-/(\Lambda+\Sigma^0)$ production ratio of $(5.6 \pm 1.2 ^{+1.8}_{-1.7})\cdot 10^{-3}$ is significantly larger than available model predictions., Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figures

Abstract

Isotopic effects in projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies have been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z ratio of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Abstract

HADES is a versatile magnetic spectrometer aimed at studying dielectron production in pion, proton and heavy-ion induced collisions. Its main features include a ring imaging gas Cherenkov detector for electron-hadron discrimination, a tracking system consisting of a set of 6 superconducting coils producing a toroidal field and drift chambers and a multiplicity and electron trigger array for additional electron-hadron discrimination and event characterization. A two-stage trigger system enhances events containing electrons. The physics program is focused on the investigation of hadron properties in nuclei and in the hot and dense hadronic matter. The detector system is characterized by an 85% azimuthal coverage over a polar angle interval from 18 to 85 degree, a single electron efficiency of 50% and a vector meson mass resolution of 2.5%. Identification of pions, kaons and protons is achieved combining time-of-flight and energy loss measurements over a large momentum range. This paper describes the main features and the performance of the detector system.

Abstract

We present phase space distributions and multiplicities of K+, K- and phi mesons produced in Ar+KCl reactions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.756 AGeV and measured with the HADES spectrometer. The inverse slope parameters and yields of kaons supplement the systematics of previous measurements. The percentage of K- mesons coming fromphi decay is found to be 18+- 7%.

Abstract

The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied in a recent experiment at the GSI laboratory with the ALADiN forward spectrometer coupled to the LAND neutron detector. Besides a primary beam of 124Sn, also secondary beams of 124La and 107Sn delivered by the FRS fragment separator have been used in order to extend the range of isotopic compositions of the produced spectator sources. With the achieved mass resolution of \Delta A/A \approx 1.5%, lighter isotopes with atomic numbers Z \le 10 are individually resolved. The presently ongoing analyses of the measured isotope yields focus on isoscaling and its relation to the properties of hot fragments at freeze-out and on the derivation of chemical freeze-out temperatures which are found to be independent of the isotopic composition of the studied systems. Abstract

The emission of e+e- pairs from C+C collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon has been investigated. The measured production probabilities, spanning from the pi0-Dalitz to the rho/omega! invariant-mass region, display a strong excess above the cocktail of standard hadronic sources. The bombarding-energy dependence of this excess is found to scale like pion production, rather than like eta production. Isotope temperatures from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, and carbon isotopic yields, and excited-state temperatures from yield ratios of particle-unstable resonances in 4He, 5Li, and 8Be, were determined for spectator fragmentation, following collisions of 197Au with targets ranging from C to Au at incident energies of 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon. Abstract

The discriminant-analysis method has been applied to optimize the exotic-beam charge recognition in a projectile fragmentation experiment. The experiment was carried out at the GSI using the fragment separator (FRS) to produce and select the relativistic secondary beams, and the ALADIN setup to measure their fragmentation products following collisions with Sn target nuclei. The beams of neutron poor isotopes around 124La and 107Sn were selected to study the isospin dependence of the limiting temperature of heavy nuclei by comparing with results for stable 124Sn projectiles. A dedicated detector to measure the projectile charge upstream of the reaction target was not used, and alternative methods had to be developed. The presented method, based on the multivariate discriminant analysis, allowed to increase the efficacy of charge recognition up to about 90%, which was about 20% more than achieved with the simple scalar methods., Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps figures, elsart, submitted to Nucl. Abstract

CHIMERA is the only 4[pi]-multidetector, used in intermediate nuclear physics experiments, able to perform mass identification of the reaction products. To this purpose, it employs time of flight measurements done with traditional time to digital converters. In order to improve the resolution in mass identification, we have applied digital signal processing to time of flight measurements. This paper presents the methodology for data analysis, the adopted algorithms and the results obtained at different sampling frequencies (mass identification up to A = 33 for the reaction products produced by a 20.5 MeV/u [sup.20]Ne beam on [sup.27]Al target). Abstract

We have developed a mixed continuous-pulsed reset technique suitable for multi-channel X-[gamma] ray sensor preamplifiers. The continuous-reset mode is used for typical signal amplitudes within the ADC input range, or 1 V. The pulsed-reset mode works on larger signal amplitudes, either caused by individual events or by bursts of piled-up events. Such operation mode maximizes the live time in the typical energy range and minimizes the dead time caused by ADC saturation on large individual signals or at high count rates. The amplitude of large individual signals can also be estimated from the reset time still achieving a high resolution. Using this technique and a bulky High Purity Germanium detector we got a 'continuous-reset' range of 2 MeV with a resolution of 2.02 keV fwhm at 1.408 MeV, and an extended 'pulsed-reset' range of 27 MeV, with a typical resolution of 0.3% at 27 MeV. Abstract

A fast gateless pulse stretcher has been developed for an easy acquisition of pulse-shape information of Ba[F.sub.2] scintillator signals. Commonly, this information is obtained by the use of two QDCs with different integration windows. This technique becomes complex and rather inconvenient when signals need to be delayed. The developed circuit uses a fast-stretcher technique to generate pulse-shape information, which requires no delay lines or gate signals. The outputs consist of two Gaussian signals whose amplitudes are propotional to the height of the Ba[F.sub.2] fast component and to the total energy deposited into the scintillator. These outputs are easily acquired with a standard peak ADC with no gate-timing problems. An excellent Fast-Slow separation has been obtained even with small input signals of only few millivolts. This technology is general purpose and can be used with any other scintillator whose light emission is characterized by two components with different lifetimes. Abstract

The capability of digital pulse shape technique to acquire data from CHIMERA detection cells (Si-CsI(TI) telescopes) has been evidenced in our previous works. We have now applied this technique to the charge discrimination of the products stopped in the silicon detectors. Large area totally depleted CHIMERA planar silicon detectors (5 cm x 5 cm area, 300/[micro]m thick) in both rear and front side injection have been used. In preliminary tests full charge identification for the reaction products up to Z = 11 have been obtained for products both crossing ([DELTA]E-E technique) and stopping in the silicon detector, using a 21 MeV/u [sup.20]Ne beam at the LNS Superconducting Cyclotron in Catania. The quality of the obtained results clearly indicates that the digital signal processing approach is able to give excellent results in this application, too. Abstract

Mass and atomic-number identification (ID) of reaction products is a fundamental requirement of any nuclear reaction study. An effective particle-ID method is demonstrated, based on pulse shape analysis/discrimination (PSD) applied to large-area, single-element silicon detectors. This technique uses commercial electronic modules and achieves atomic number resolution rivaling that typically obtained with multi-element ([DELTA]E-E) detector telescopes. The method is applied to the CHIMERA detector system without compromising its time-of-flight (TOF) resolution. In-beam tests of the PSD method have been performed with large-area, 300-[micro]m thick CHIMERA silicon detectors, measuring particles from the [sup.19]F + [sup.12]C reaction at Tandem energies. Performance of a simple PSD set up is discussed, for front and rear particle injection. Index Terms--Charge identification, planar silicon detector, pulse shape.

Abstract

A 100 Msamples/s 14-bit sampling analog-to-digital converter has been used to perform digital pulse-shape acquisition of signals collected from CHIMERA telescopes. Two different kinds of tests have been carried out to check the performances. The signals from a typical CHIMERA detection cell have been collected using both a standard CHIMERA electronic chain up to the amplifier, and a very simple analog front end, basically reduced to the preamplifier. The obtained on-beam and on-line results are presented. Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

Nuclear matter under extreme conditions can be studied in the laboratory with heavy-ion collisions. In this case one can indeed vary the incident energy and explore different impact parameter and rapidity regions to access densities that extend above and below saturation. This opportunity allows one to learn about the nuclear equation of state and its implications in astrophysics phenomena such as supernovae explosions and neutron stars properties. All these phenomena involve time scales that need to be accessed with two- and multi-particle correlation measurements. In this contribution a brief report of the FARCOS array will be presented. In particular, tests with alpha sources and beams and preliminary results from a recent experiment INKIISSY performed using a FARCOS prototype made of four telescopes will be presented.

Abstract

A 32 channel 12 bit Time to Digital Converter (TDC) has been designed to fit in a single unit VME 6U. 32 Time to Amplitude Converter (TAC) sections and a multiplexer circuit are followed by a fast 12 bit ADC. The total handling and conversion time for all the channels is less than 10 [[micro]seconds]. The differential non linearity is kept below 2% of the average channel width. The Common Start/Stop mode, the Full Scale Range, the individual low and high threshold values and the self-test-mode are software selectable. The module has Zero Suppression and Chained Block Transfer protocol capabilities.

Abstract

In the framework of the HADES (High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer) collaboration we are developing the Time Of Flight (TOF) wall subdetector. In order to efficiently select events with [e.sup.+][e.sup.-] pairs produced in the nuclear matter, the TOF wall must be able to resolve electrons from pions up to 0.5 GeV/c and from protons up to 2 GeV/c. Because the short flight path of about 2m requires a 100-150 ps time resolution, we are building a granular system made of scintillator rods readout on both ends by means of photomultipliers, capable of such performance.

Abstract

The results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model simulations favoured a moderately soft symmetry term, but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. These results have been confirmed by an independent analysis based on the Tübingen QMD simulations. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration. Abstract

A data acquisition system based on VME standard modules has been designed for MULTICS, a multi-element detector array [1]. The system is composed of a master crate housing CPU's, Memories, Interface and Pattern boards. Up to 15 VME slave crates can be connected using the VMV vertical bus for ADC and TDC boards. A Macintosh Quadra is used as a console to provide a user friendly environment to send commands to the CPU's. Tools in the system include collecting and storing data, displaying histograms, handling all hardware parameters (high and low thresholds, rise time protection etc..). Diagnostic functions and error messages are also available to detect hardware failures or incorrect settings for the modules.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011., Comment: Talk given by P.
