3. Diagnostic study of diabatic heating and potential vorticity during a case of cyclogenesis

Abstract

On 16-17 November, 2015, north and middle regions of Saudi Arabia were hit by a case of cyclogenesisassociated with heavy rainfall. This work presents a diagnostic study of this heavy rainfallcase based on the analysis of diabatic heating and potential vorticity. The synoptic analysis investigate that the important dynamical factors that causes this case are the northward extension of Red Sea Trough, anticyclone over the Arabian Peninsula, a travailing midlatitude upper trough, moisture transport pathways and strong upward motion arising from tropospheric instability. The calculation of diabatic heating by the thermodynamic equation illustrate that the contribution of vertical temperature advection and the adiabatic term are opposite to each other during the period of study. The largest contribution of the horizontal cold advection occurs during the first two days while the largest contribution of the horizontal warm advection occurs during the maximum development days. The dynamics of the studied case are also investigated in terms of isobaric Potential Vorticity. It is found that the location of the low-level Potential Vorticity anomaly and the Potential Vorticity generation estimates coincides with the heating region, which implies that condensation supports a large enough source to explain the existence of the low-level Potential Vorticity anomaly.

9. Analysis of Rainfall over Saudi Arabia.

Abstract

In this study, rainfall over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is analyzed using data from available meteorological stations. The analysis of these data shows that the highest amount of rainfall occurs during the spring over the southwest, middle and east of KSA. The second highest amount of rainfall occurs during winter over the east and northeast of KSA. The season of the lowest amount of rainfall over KSA is summer, when, except in the mountainous area in the southwest region, the amount of rainfall is very small. While the horizontal distribution pattern of rainfall during autumn is somewhat similar to that during spring, the amount of rainfall in autumn is smaller than that in spring. The most significant synoptic feature appears in spring when the cold air associated with secondary Mediterranean depressions meets the moist hot southerly air associated with Red Sea trough over KSA. Abstract

An analysis of the kinetic energy budget for a tropical cyclone has been made in this work. Horizontal flux convergence constitutes a major energy source. Generation of kinetic energy via cross-contour flow is a persistent sink throughout the pre-storm and growth periods. Dissipation of kinetic energy from subgrid to grid scales is an important source during the pre-storm and growth periods. It acts as the major sink of energy during the decay period. The major contribution to kinetic energy comes from a persistent upper tropospheric jet stream activity throughout the period of the cyclone development. Unlike midlatitude cyclones a considerable quantity of kinetic energy appears between 850-500 hPa layers especially during the growth period. While the behavior of the values of horizontal divergence by nondivergent wind closely resemble to those of total horizontal divergence term, neglecting the divergent part of the wind would clearly lead to a considerable error in the calculation of total horizontal divergence. The mean error in approximation of total horizontal divergence by the nondivergent part during the life cycle of our cyclone is about 36 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Energy conversions of a desert depression

Abstract

Summary This work is concerned with the energy conversions of a developing atmospheric system in subtropical regions. It deals, specifically, with a North African depression, which is known locally as Khamsin. This storm developed during the period from 1200?UTC 26 April to 1200?UTC 30 April 1982 and caused numerous sand storms in the area. Although its life cycle lasted about 5 days, its rapid development was associated with severe weather conditions over the southern Mediterranean coast. The vertical distribution and temporal variations of various components of the energy budget are presented in a detailed analysis. The energy contents and their changes in different atmospheric levels are discussed in the course of the cyclone’s development. By integrating over the entire volume of the computational area, the complete energy cycle of the cyclone is obtained and discussed within the framework of cyclone energetics.
