Search

Some giant radio galaxies selected at X-rays with an AGN show signs of a restarted nuclear activity. One object in this peculiar class is Mrk1498, a giant low-frequency double radio source that shows extended emission in [OIII]. This emission is likely related to the history of the nuclear activity of the galaxy. We investigate whether this bubble-like emission might trace an outflow from either present or past AGN activity. Using MEGARA/GTC, medium-resolution spectroscopy (R 10000) data, we obtained the kinematics and fluxes of the ionised gas from modelling the [OIII] and Hbeta features.with three kinematic components. All the components show an overall blue to red velocity pattern, with similar peak-to-peak velocities but a different velocity dispersion. At a galactocentric distance of 2.3 kpc, we found a blob with a velocity up to 100km/s, and a high velocity dispersion (170km/s) that is spatially coincident with the direction of the radio jet. The observed [OIII]/Hbeta line ratio indicates possible ionisation from AGN or shocks nearly everywhere. The clumpy structure visibile in HST images at kpc scales show the lowest values of log[OIII]/Hbeta , which is likely not related to the photoionisation by the AGN. Taking optical and radio activity into account, we propose a scenario of two different ionised gas features over the radio AGN lifecycle of Mrk 1498. The radio emission suggests at least two main radio activity episodes: an old episode at Mpc scales (formed during a time span of 100Myr), and a new episode from the core (>2000yr ago). At optical wavelengths, we observe clumps and a blob that are likely associated with fossil outflow. The latter is likely powered by past episodes of the flickering AGN activity that may have occurred between the two main radio phases., Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures

PBC J2333.9-2343 is a giant radio galaxy at z = 0.047 with a bright central core associated to a blazar nucleus. If the nuclear blazar jet is a new phase of the jet activity, then the small orientation angle suggest a dramatic change of the jet direction. We present observations obtained between September 2018 and January 2019 (cadence larger than three days) with Effeslberg, SMARTS-1.3m, ZTF, ATLAS, Swift, and Fermi-LAT, and between April-July 2019 (daily cadence) with SMARTS-1.3m and ATLAS. Large (>2x) flux increases are observed on timescales shorter than a month, which are interpreted as flaring events. The cross correlation between the SMARTS-1.3m monitoring in the NIR and optical shows that these data do not show significant time lag within the measured errors. A comparison of the optical variability properties between non-blazars and blazars AGN shows that PBC J2333.9-2343 has properties more comparable to the latter. The SED of the nucleus shows two peaks, that were fitted with a one zone leptonic model. Our data and modelling shows that the high energy peak is dominated by External Compton from the dusty torus with mild contribution from Inverse Compton from the jet. The derived jet angle of 3 degrees is also typical of a blazar. Therefore, we confirm the presence of a blazar-like core in the center of this giant radio galaxy, likely a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar with peculiar properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 15 pages, 6 figures, 2 appendix including tables and figures

In this work we have updated the list of AGN detected by INTEGRAL taking into account the new objects listed in the last published INTEGRAL/IBIS survey. We have collected 83 new AGN increasing the number of INTEGRAL detected active galaxies (436) by 19%. Half of these new additions are located behind the Galactic plane; for most of them we have full X-ray coverage obtained through archival data from Swift/XRT, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. This allowed us to associate each high-energy emitter with a single or multiple X-ray counterpart/s and characterise the spectral shape of these new AGN by estimating the photon index, the intrinsic absorption and the 2-10 keV flux. A few cases where two soft X-ray counterparts fall within the INTEGRAL error circle and at least one is classified as an AGN have been found and discussed in detail. Thirty-four sources originally listed as AGN candidates or unidentified objects have been recognised as AGN by employing three diagnostic tests: WISE colours, radio emission and morphology. For 12 sources, among the 34 AGN candidates, we reduced optical spectra and confirmed their AGN nature, providing also their optical class and redshift. The advent of new all-sky radio surveys such as the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS) and the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS), performed with the latest generation radio telescopes, is opening new possibilities on the classification and study of extragalactic $\gamma$-ray sources, specially the underrepresented ones like radio galaxies. In particular, the enhanced sensitivity (sub-mJy level) and resolution (a few arcsec) provides a better morphological and spectral classification. In this work, we present the reclassification of a Fermi-LAT source as a new FRII radio galaxy from the INTEGRAL sample found to emit at GeV energies. Through a broad-band spectral fitting from radio to $\gamma$-ray, we find that the commonly invoked jet contribution is not sufficient to account for the observed $\gamma$-ray flux. Our modeling suggests that the observed emission could mainly originate in the lobes (rather than in the radio core) by inverse Compton scattering of radio-emitting electrons off the ambient photon fields. In addition, we cross-correlated the latest generation radio surveys with a list of Fermi-LAT objects from the literature considered to be candidate misaligned AGN, finding four new radio galaxies with a double-lobed morphology. Additional four objects could be classified as such thanks to previous studies in the literature, for a total of nine new radio galaxies with GeV emission presented in this work. We foresee that further objects of this class might be found in the near future with the advent of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), populating the GeV sky., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Giant radio galaxies (GRGs), with extended structures reaching hundreds of kpc, are among the most spectacular examples of ejection of relativistic plasma from super-massive black holes. In this work, third of a series, we present LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) images at 144 MHz, collected in the framework of the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2), for nine sources extracted from our sample of hard X-ray selected GRGs (HXGRG, i.e. from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT catalogues at >20 keV). Thanks to the resolution and sensitivity of LoTSS, we could probe the complex morphology of these GRGs, unveiling cases with diffuse (Mpc-scale) remnant emission, presence of faint off-axis wings, or a misaligned inner jet. In particular, for one source (B21144+35B), we could clearly detect a $\sim$300 kpc wide off-axis emission, in addition to an inner jet which orientation is not aligned with the lobes axis. For another source (J1153.9+5848) a structure consistent with jet precession was revealed, appearing as an X-shaped morphology with relic lobes having an extension larger than the present ones, and with a different axis orientation. From an environment analysis, we found 2 sources showing an overdensity of cosmological neighbours, and a correspondent association with a galaxy cluster from catalogues. Finally, a comparison with radio-selected GRGs from LoTSS DR1 suggested that, on average, HXGRG can grow to larger extents. These results highlight the importance of deep low-frequency observations to probe the evolution of radio galaxies, and ultimately estimate the duty cycle of their jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In recent years, thanks to the continuous surveys performed by INTEGRAL and Swift satellites, our knowledge of the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray sky has greatly improved. As a result it is now populated with about 2000 sources, both Galactic and extra-galactic, mainly discovered by IBIS and BAT instruments. Many different follow-up campaigns have been successfully performed by using a multi-wavelength approach, shedding light on the nature of a number of these new hard X-ray sources. However, a fraction are still of a unidentified nature. This is mainly due to the lack of lower energy observations, which usually deliver a better constrained position for the sources, and the unavailability of the key observational properties, needed to obtain a proper physical characterization. Here we report on the classification of two poorly studied Galactic X-ray transients IGR J20155+3827 and Swift J1713.4-4219, for which the combination of new and/or archival X-ray and Optical/NIR observations have allowed us to pinpoint their nature. In particular, thanks to XMM\Newton archival data together with new optical spectroscopic and archival Optical/NIR photometric observations, we have been able to classify IGR J20155+3827 as a distant HMXB. The new INTEGRAL and Swift data collected during the 2019 X-ray outburst of Swift J1713.4-4219, in combination with the archival optical/NIR observations, suggest a LMXB classification for this source., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an update on the sample of soft gamma-ray selected giant radio galaxies (GRGs) extracted from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT surveys; it includes 8 new sources and one candidate object. In the new sample all, but one source, display FR II radio morphologies; the only exception is B21144+35B which is an FR I. The objects belong to both type 1 and 2 AGN optical classes and have redshifts in the range 0.06-0.35, while the radio sizes span from 0.7 to 1 Mpc. In this study, we present for the first time two objects that were never discussed as GRGs before and propose a new candidate GRG. We confirm the correlation between the X-ray luminosity and the radio core luminosity found for other soft gamma-ray selected GRGs and expected for AGNs powered by efficient accretion. We also corroborate previous results that indicate that the luminosity of the radio lobes is relatively low compared with the nuclear X-ray emission. This supports the idea that the nucleus of these GRGs is now more powerful than in the past, consistent with a restarting activity scenario, Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. The nature of a substantial percentage (about one fifth) of hard X-ray sources discovered with the BAT instrument onboard the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (hereafter Swift) is unknown because of the lack of an identified longer-wavelength counterpart. Without such follow-up, an X-ray catalogue is of limited astrophysical value: we therefore embarked, since 2009, on a long-term project to uncover the optical properties of sources identified by Swift by using a large suite of ground-based telescopes and instruments. In this work, we continue our programme of characterization of unidentified or poorly studied hard X-ray sources by presenting the results of an optical spectroscopic campaign aimed at pinpointing and classifying the optical counterparts of 35 hard X-ray sources taken from the 70-month BAT catalogue. With the use of optical spectra taken at six different telescopes we were able to identify the main spectral characteristics (continuum type, redshift, and emission or absorption lines) of the observed objects, and determined their nature. We identify and characterize a total of 41 optical candidate counterparts corresponding to 35 hard X-ray sources given that, because of positional uncertainties, multiple lower energy counterparts can sometimes be associated with higher energy detections. We discuss which ones are the actual (or at least most likely) counterparts based on our observational results. In particular, 31 sources in our sample are active galactic nuclei: 16 are classified as Type 1 (with broad and narrow emission lines) and 13 are classified as Type 2 (with narrow emission lines only); two more are BL Lac-type objects. We also identify one LINER, one starburst, and 3 elliptical galaxies. One distinctive feature of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) is the relatively weak reflection features they may display in the X-ray spectrum, which can result from the disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. Some material, however, must surround the active nucleus, i.e., the accretion flow itself and, possibly, a flattened-out or thinned torus. In this work, we study whether reflection is indeed absent or undetectable due to its intrinsically weak features together with the low statistics inherent to LLAGN. Here we focus on NGC 3718 ($L/L_{\rm Edd}\sim10^{-5}$) combining observations from XMM--Newton and the deepest to date NuSTAR (0.5--79 keV) spectrum of a LLAGN, to constrain potential reflectors, and analyze how the fitted coronal parameters depend on the reflection model. We test models representing both an accretion disc (Relxill) and a torus-like (MYTorus and Borus) neutral reflector. From a statistical point of view, reflection is not required, but its inclusion allows to place strong constraints on the geometry and physical features of the surroundings: both neutral reflectors (torus) tested should be Compton thin ($N_H<10^{23.2}$cm$^{-2}$) and preferentially cover a large fraction of the sky. If the reflected light instead arises from an ionized reflector, a highly ionized case is preferred. These models produce an intrinsic power-law spectral index in the range [1.81--1.87], where the torus models result in steeper slopes. The cut-off energy of the power-law emission also changes with the inclusion of reflection models, resulting in constrained values for the disc reflectors and unconstrained values for torus reflectors., Comment: 15 pages and 16 Figures

In this work the INTEGRAL hard X-ray selected sample of AGN has been used to investigate the possible contribution of absorbing material distributed within the host galaxies to the total amount of NH measured in the X-ray band. We collected all the available axial ratio measurements of the galaxies hosting our AGN together with their morphological information and find that also for our hard X-ray selected sample a deficit of edge-on galaxies hosting type 1 AGN is present. We estimate that in our hard X-ray selected sample there is a deficit of 24% (+/- 5%) of type 1 AGN. Possible bias in redshift has been excluded, as we found the same effect in a well determined range of z where the number and the distributions of the two classes are statistically the same. Our findings clearly indicate that material located in the host galaxy on scales of hundreds of parsecs and not aligned with the putative absorbing torus of the AGN can contribute to the total amount of column density. This galactic absorber can be large enough to hide the broad line region of some type 1 AGN causing their classification as type 2 objects and giving rise to the deficiency of type 1 in edge-on galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

About 6% of Radio Galaxies (RG) can reach linear sizes larger than 0.7 Mpc, and are then classified as Giant Radio Galaxies (GRG). The conditions that make possible the formation of such big structures is still not clear - either core accretion properties or environmental factors. Recent studies have shown that GRG can be up to four times more abundant in hard X-ray selected (i.e. from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT at >20 keV) RG samples. Moreover, a high fraction of young radio sources found in their cores suggests a recently restarted activity, as suggested from the discrepancy between the measured jet and lobes power, with respect to the one expected from core X-ray luminosity. Here we present a radio morphological study of a sample of 15 hard X-ray selected GRG, discussing low-frequency images from our GMRT campaign complemented with others from the literature: among them, 7/15 show evidence of restarted radio activity either in the form of double-double/X-shaped morphology, or as a cocoon emission embedding more recent jets. This, together with the objects from this sample already found hosting a young radio source in their core, suggests that at least 13 over 15 of these hard X-ray selected GRG show features which are consistent with the possibility of restarted radio activity., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

Mrk 1498 is part of a sample of galaxies with extended emission line regions (extended outwards up to a distance of $\sim$7 kpc) suggested to be photo-ionized by an AGN that has faded away or that is still active but heavily absorbed. Interestingly, the nucleus of Mrk 1498 is at the center of two giant radio lobes with a projected linear size of 1.1 Mpc. Our multi-wavelength analysis reveals a complex nuclear structure, with a young radio source (Giga-hertz Peaked Spectrum) surrounded by a strong X-ray nuclear absorption, a mid-infrared spectrum that is dominated by the torus emission, plus a circum-nuclear extended emission in the [OIII] image (with radius of $\sim$ 1 kpc), most likely related to the ionization of the AGN, aligned with the small and large scale radio jet and extended also at X-rays. In addition a large-scale extended emission (up to $\sim$ 10 kpc) is only visible in [OIII]. These data show conclusive evidence of a heavily absorbed nucleus and has recently restarted its nuclear activity. To explain its complexity, we propose that Mrk 1498 is the result of a merging event or secular processes, such as a minor interaction, that has triggered the nuclear activity and produced tidal streams. We aim to measure the physical properties of the hot X-ray corona of two active galactic nuclei, NGC 4388 and NGC 2110. We analysed the hard X-ray (20-300 keV) INTEGRAL spectrum in conjunction with archival XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data. The X-ray spectrum of both sources is phenomenologically well described by an absorbed cut-off power law. In agreement with previous results, we find no evidence of a Compton reflection component in these sources. We obtain a high-energy cut-off of $200^{+75}_{-40}$ keV for NGC 4388 and $320^{+100}_{-60}$ keV for NGC 2110. A fit with a thermal Comptonisation model yields a coronal temperature of $80^{+45}_{-20}$ keV and $75^{+20}_{-15}$ keV, respectively, and an optical depth of approximately two, assuming a spherical geometry. The coronal temperature and luminosity of both sources are consistent with pair production that acts as a thermostat for the thermal plasma. Giant Radio Galaxies (GRG) are the largest single entities in the Universe, having a projected linear size exceeding 0.7 Mpc, which implies that they are also quite old objects. They are not common, representing a fraction of only about 6% in samples of bright radio galaxies. While a census of about 300 of these objects has been built in the past years, still no light has been shed on the conditions necessary to allow such an exceptional growth, whether of environmental nature or linked to the inner accretion properties. Recent studies found that samples of radio galaxies selected from hard X-ray AGN catalogs selected from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT (thus at energies >20 keV) present a fraction of GRG four times larger than what found in radio-selected samples. We present radio observations of 15 nuclei of hard X-ray selected GRG, finding for the first time a large fraction (61%) of young radio sources at the center of Mpc-scale structures. Being at the center of GRG, these young nuclei may be undergoing a restarting activity episode, suggesting a link between the detected hard X-ray emission - due to the ongoing accretion - and the reactivation of the jets., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ

With their sizes larger than 0.7 Mpc, Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs) are the largest individual objects in the Universe. To date, the reason why they reach such enormous extensions is still unclear. One of the proposed scenarios suggests that they are the result of multiple episodes of jet activity. Cross-correlating the INTEGRAL+Swift AGN population with radio catalogues (NVSS, FIRST, SUMSS), we found that 22% of the sources are GRG (a factor four higher than those selected from radio catalogues). Remarkably, 80% of the sample shows signs of restarting radio activity. Fermi J1544-0639/ASASSN-17gs/AT2017egv was identified as a gamma-ray/optical transient on May 15, 2017. Subsequent multiwavelength observations suggest that this source may belong to the new class of radio-weak BL Lacs. We studied the X-ray spectral properties and short-term variability of Fermi J1544-0639 to constrain the X-ray continuum emission mechanism of this peculiar source. We present the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation, 56 ks in length, performed on February 21, 2018. The source exhibits strong X-ray variability, both in flux and spectral shape, on timescales of ~10 ks, with a harder-when-brighter behaviour typical of BL Lacs. The X-ray spectrum is nicely described by a variable broken power law, with a break energy of around 2.7 keV consistent with radiative cooling due to Comptonization of broad-line region photons. We find evidence for a `soft excess', nicely described by a blackbody with a temperature of ~0.2 keV, consistent with being produced by bulk Comptonization along the jet., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures. We present the first broad-band X-ray study of the nuclei of 14 hard X-ray selected giant radio galaxies, based both on the literature and on the analysis of archival X-ray data from NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Swift and INTEGRAL. The X-ray properties of the sources are consistent with an accretion-related X-ray emission, likely originating from an X-ray corona coupled to a radiatively efficient accretion flow. We find a correlation between the X-ray luminosity and the radio core luminosity, consistent with that expected for AGNs powered by efficient accretion. In most sources, the luminosity of the radio lobes and the estimated jet power are relatively low compared with the nuclear X-ray emission. This indicates that either the nucleus is more powerful than in the past, consistent with a restarting of the central engine, or that the giant lobes are dimmer due to expansion losses., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. PBC J2333.9-2343 is a peculiar active nucleus with two giant radio lobes and a weak blazar-like nucleus at their center. In the present work we show new optical, UV, and X-ray data taken from the San Pedro M\'artir telescope, the New Technology Telescope, NTT/EFOSC2, and the Swift/XRT satellite. The source is highly variable at all frequencies, in particular the strongest variations are found in the broad H$\alpha$ component with a flux increase of 61$\pm$4 per cent between 2009 and 2016, following the X-ray flux increase of 62$\pm$6 per cent between 2010 and 2016. We also detected a broad H$\beta$ component in 2016, making the optical classification change from type 1.9 to type 1.8 in one year. We have also detected a broad component of the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 line, which is blue-shifted and of high velocity, suggesting an origin from a highly disturbed medium, possibly an outflow. The line flux variability and broad widths are indicative of a jet that is, at least in part, responsible for the ionization of the BLR and NLR., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a broad-band X-ray spectral analysis of the radio-loud active galactic nuclei NGC 612, 4C 73.08 and 3C 452, exploiting archival data from NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Swift and INTEGRAL. These Compton-thick candidates are the most absorbed sources among the hard X-ray selected radio galaxies studied in Panessa et al. (2016). We find an X-ray absorbing column density in every case below $1.5 \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, and no evidence for a strong reflection continuum or iron K $\alpha$ line. Therefore, none of these sources is properly Compton-thick. We review other Compton-thick radio galaxies reported in the literature, arguing that we currently lack strong evidences for heavily absorbed radio-loud AGNs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 5 figures

PBC J2333.9-2343 is a giant radio galaxy which shows different characteristics at different wavebands that are difficult to explain within the actual generic schemes of unification of active galactic nuclei (AGN), thus being a good candidate to host different phases of nuclear activity. We aim at disentangling the nature of this AGN by using simultaneous multiwavelength data. We obtained data in 2015 from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the San Pedro M\'{a}rtir telescope, and the XMM-Newton}observatories. This allows the study of the nuclear parts of the galaxy through its morphology and spectra, as well as the analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED). We also reanalysed optical data from the San Pedro M\'{a}rtir telescope from 2009 previously presented in Parisi et al. (2012) for a homogeneous comparison. At X-ray frequencies, the source is unabsorbed. The optical spectra are of a type 1.9 AGN, both in 2009 and 2015, although showing a broader component in 2015. The VLBA radio images show an inverted spectrum with self-absorbed, optically thick compact core and steep spectrum, optically thin jet. The SED resembles that of typical blazars and is best represented by an external Compton (EC) model with a viewing angle of $\sim$ 3-6 degrees. The apparent size of the large scale structure of PBC J2333.9-2343 must correspond to an intrinsic deprojected value of $\sim 7$ Mpc for $\theta_v<10^\circ$, and to $> 13$ Mpc for $\theta_v<5^\circ$, a value much larger than the bigger giant radio galaxy known (4.5 Mpc). The above arguments suggest that PBC J2333.9-2343 has undergone through a new episode of nuclear activity and that the direction of the new jet has changed, in the plane of the sky and is now pointing towards us, making this source from being a radio galaxy to become a blazar, a very exceptional case of restarting activity., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

The latest INTEGRAL/IBIS all-sky survey lists 219 hard X-ray sources whose nature is still unknown. We report on our ongoing campaign aimed at identifying these high-energy emitters by exploiting the focusing capabilities of the X-ray Telescope (XRT, 0.2-10 keV) on board Swift, which allow an enhancement of the source localisation to arcsec level, thus facilitating the identification of the likely counterpart. By cross-correlating the list of the unidentified IBIS sources included in the latest IBIS catalogue with Swift/XRT archival data, we found a set of 14 objects, not yet reported in the literature, for which XRT data were available. We found no detection in only one case, a single X-ray association in 9 sources, and 2/3 associations in the remaining objects. We then made use of multi-waveband archives to search for counterparts at other wavelengths of these XRT detections and exploited X-ray spectral information in an attempt to determine their nature and association with the IBIS object. As a result of our analysis, we identified a single counterpart for 13 sources, although in some cases its nature/class could not be assessed on the basis of the information collected. More specifically, we found that SWIFT J0924.2-3141 and SWIFT J1839.1-5717 are absorbed AGN, while SWIFT J0800.7-4309 and 1SWXRT J230642.8+550817 are Cataclysmic Variable binary systems. Finally, we found that IGR J14059-6116 is likely associated with the Fermi source 3FGL J1405.4-6119. In the case of XMMSL1 J030715.5-545536 no XRT counterpart was detected. In all the other cases, optical/infrared spectroscopy is necessary to classify properly each X-ray counterpart and confirm their association with the INTEGRAL/IBIS detection., Comment: 16 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables. We present the nature of 50 hard X-ray emitting objects unveiled through an optical spectroscopy campaign performed at seven telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres. These objects were detected with Swift-BAT and listed as of unidentified nature in the 54-month Palermo BAT catalogue. In detail, 45 sources in our sample are identified as active galactic nuclei of which, 27 are classified as type 1 (with broad and narrow emission lines) and 18 are classified as type 2 (with only narrow emission lines). Among the broad-line emission objects, one is a type 1 high-redshift quasi-stellar object, and among the narrow-line emission objects, one is a starburst galaxy, one is a X-ray bright optically normal galaxy, and one is a low ionization nuclear emission line region. We report 30 new redshift measurements, 13 confirmations and 2 more accurate redshift values. Context. Based on their overwhelming dominance among associated Fermi gamma ray catalogue sources, it is expected that a large fraction of the unidentified Fermi objects are blazars. Through crossmatching between the positions of unidentified gamma ray sources from the First Fermi Catalog of gamma ray sources emitting above 10 GeV (1FHL) and the ROSAT and Swift XRT catalogues of X ray objects and between pointed XRT observations, a sample of 36 potential associations was found in previous works with less than 15 arcsec of positional offset. One third of them have recently been classified; the remainder, though believed to belong to the blazar class, still lack spectroscopic classifications. Aims. We study the optical spectrum of the putative counterparts of these unidentified gamma ray sources in order to find their redshifts and to determine their nature and main spectral characteristics. Methods. An observational campaign was carried out on the putative counterparts of 13 1FHL sources using medium resolution optical spectroscopy from the Osservatorio Astronomico di Bologna in Loiano, Italy; the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and the Nordic Optical Telescope, both in the Canary Islands, Spain; and the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional San Pedro Martir in Baja California, Mexico. Results. We were able to classify 14 new objects based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Conclusions. Twelve new blazars were found, along with one new quasar and one new narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) to be potentially associated with the 1FHL sources of our sample. In order to investigate the role of absorption in AGN with jets, we have studied the column density distribution of a hard X-ray selected sample of radio galaxies, derived from the INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT AGN catalogues (~7-10% of the total AGN population). The 64 radio galaxies have a typical FRII radio morphology and are characterized by high 20-100 keV luminosities (from 10^42 to 10^46 erg/s) and high Eddington ratios (Log L_{Bol}/L_{Edd} typically larger than ~0.01). The observed fraction of absorbed AGN (N_{H} > 10^{22} cm^{-2}) is around 40% among the total sample, and ~75% among type 2 AGN. The majority of obscured AGN are narrow line objects, while unobscured AGN are broad line objects, obeying to the zeroth-order predictions of unified models. A significant anti-correlation between the radio core dominance parameter and the X-ray column density is found. The observed fraction of Compton thick AGN is ~2-3%, in comparison with the 5-7% found in radio-quiet hard X-ray selected AGN. We have estimated the absorption and Compton thick fractions in a hard X-ray sample containing both radio galaxies and non-radio galaxies and therefore affected by the same selection biases. No statistical significant difference was found in the absorption properties of radio galaxies and non radio galaxies sample. In particular, the Compton thick objects are likely missing in both samples and the fraction of obscured radio galaxies appears to decrease with luminosity as observed in hard X-ray non-radio galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. Using the recent INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT surveys we have extracted a sample of 64 confirmed plus 3 candidate radio galaxies selected in the soft gamma-ray band. The sample covers all optical classes and is dominated by objects showing a FR II radio morphology; a large fraction (70%) of the sample is made of radiative mode or High Excitation Radio Galaxies (HERG). We have measured the source size on NVSS, FIRST and SUMSS images and have compared our findings with data in the literature obtaining a good match. We surprisingly found that the soft gamma-ray selection favours the detection of large size radio galaxies: 60% of objects in the sample have size greater than 0.4 Mpc while around 22% reach dimension above 0.7 Mpc at which point they are classified as Giant Radio Galaxies or GRGs, the largest and most energetic single entities in the Universe. Their fraction among soft gamma ray selected radio galaxies is significantly larger than typically found in radio surveys, where only a few percent of objects (1-6%) are GRGs. This may partly be due to observational biases affecting radio surveys more than soft gamma ray surveys, thus disfavouring the detection of GRGs at lower frequencies. The main reasons and/or conditions leading to the formation of these large radio structures are still unclear with many parameters such as high jet power, long activity time and surrounding environment all playing a role; the first two may be linked to the type of AGN discussed in this work and partly explain the high fraction of GRGs found in the present sample. In the most recent IBIS survey based on observations performed during the first 1000 orbits of INTEGRAL, are listed 363 high energy emitters firmly associated with AGN, 107 of which are reported here for the first time. We have used X-ray data to image the IBIS 90% error circle of all the AGN in the sample of 107, in order to obtain the correct X-ray counterparts, locate them with arcsec accuracy and therefore pinpoint the correct optical counterparts. This procedure has led to the optical and spectral characterization of the entire sample. This new set consists of 34 broad line or type 1 AGN, 47 narrow line or type 2 AGN, 18 Blazars and 8 sources of unknown class. These 8 sources have been associated with AGN from their positional coincidence with 2MASX/Radio/X-ray sources. Seven high energy emitters have been included since they are considered to be good AGN candidates. Spectral analysis has been already performed on 55 objects and the results from the most recent and/or best statistical measurements have been collected. For the remaining 52 sources, we report the spectral analysis for the first time in this work. We have been able to obtain the full X-ray coverage of the sample making use of data from Swift/XRT, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. In addition to the spectral characterization of the entire sample, this analysis has enabled us to identify peculiar sources and by comparing different datasets, highlight flux variability in the 2-10 keV and 20-40 keV bands., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication on MNRAS

We report here an all-sky soft gamma-ray source catalog based on IBIS observations performed during the first 1000 orbits of INTEGRAL. The database for the construction of the source list consists of all good quality data available from launch in 2002 up to the end of 2010. This corresponds to $\sim$110 Ms of scientific public observations with a concentrated coverage on the Galactic Plane and extragalactic deep exposures. This new catalog includes 939 sources above a 4.5 sigma significance threshold detected in the 17-100 keV energy band, of which 120 represent previously undiscovered soft gamma-ray emitters. The source positions are determined, mean fluxes are provided in two main energy bands, and are reported together with the overall source exposure. Indicative levels of variability are provided, and outburst times and durations are given for transient sources. We report the results from our analysis of a large set of archival data acquired with the X-ray telescope (XRT) onboard Swift, covering the sky region surrounding objects from the first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalogue of high-energy sources (1FHL), which still lack an association. Of the 23 regions analysed, ten did not show any evidence of X-ray emission, but 13 were characterised by the presence of one or more objects emitting in the 0.3-10 keV band. Only in a couple of cases is the X-ray counterpart located outside the Fermi positional uncertainty, while in all other cases the associations found are compatible with the high-energy error ellipses. All counterparts we found have been studied in detail by means of a multi-waveband approach to evaluate their nature or class; in most cases, we have been able to propose a likely or possible association except for one Fermi source whose nature remains doubtful at the moment. The first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalogue of sources (1FHL) emitting at high energies (above 10 GeV) reports the details of 514 objects detected in the first three years of the Fermi mission. Of these, 71 were reported as unidentified in the 1FHL catalogue, although six are likely to be associated with a supernova remnant (SNR), a Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) or a combination of both, thereby leaving a list of 65 still unassociated objects. Herein, we report a preliminary analysis on this sample of objects concentrating on nine 1FHL sources, which were found to have a clear optical extragalactic classification. We have analyzed the NVSS and SUMSS data at 1.4 GHz and 843 MHz for a well defined complete sample of hard X-ray AGN observed by INTEGRAL. A large number (70/79) of sources are detected in the radio band, showing a wide range of radio morphologies, from unresolved or slightly resolved cores to extended emission over several hundreds of kpc scales. The radio fluxes have been correlated with the 2-10 keV and 20-100 keV emission, revealing significant correlations with slopes consistent with those expected for radiatively efficient accreting systems. The high energy emission coming from the inner accretion regions correlates with the radio emission averaged over hundreds of kpc scales (i.e., thousands of years)., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of a large scale radio structure associated with IGR J17488--2338, a source recently discovered by \emph{INTEGRAL} and optically identified as a broad line AGN at redshift 0.24. At low frequencies, the source properties are those of an intermediate-power FR II radio galaxy with a linear size of 1.4\,Mpc. This new active galaxy is therefore a member of a class of objects called Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs), a rare type of radio galaxies with physical sizes larger than 0.7\,Mpc; they represent the largest and most energetic single entities in the Universe and are useful laboratories for many astrophysical studies. Their large scale structures could be due either to special external conditions or to uncommon internal properties of the source central engine The AGN at the centre of IGR J17488--2338 has a black hole of 1.3$\times$10$^9$ solar masses, a bolometric luminosity of 7$\times$10$^{46}$erg\,s$^{-1}$ and an Eddington ratio of 0.3, suggesting that it is powerful enough to produce the large structure observed in radio. The source is remarkable also for other properties, among which its X-ray absorption, at odds with its type 1 classification, and the presence of a strong iron line which is a feature not often observed in radio galaxies., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

In this letter we present the primary continuum parameters, the photon index Gamma and the high energy cut-off Ec, of 41 type-1 Seyfert galaxies extracted from the INTEGRAL complete sample of AGN. We performed a broad band (0.3-100 keV) spectral analysis by fitting simultaneously the soft and hard X-ray spectra obtained by XMM and INTEGRAL/IBIS-Swift/BAT respectively in order to investigate the general properties of these parameters in particular their distribution and mean values. We find a mean photon index for the whole sample of 1.73 with a standard deviation of 0.17 and a mean high energy cut-off of 128 keV with a standard deviation of 46 keV. This is the first time that the cut-off energy is constrained in a such large number of AGN. We have 26 measurements of the cut-off, which corresponds to 63% of the entire sample, distributed between 50 and 200 keV. There are a further 11 lower limits mostly below 300 keV. Using the main parameters of the primary continuum, we have been able to obtain the actual physical parameters of the Comptonizing region i.e. the plasma temperature kT_e from 20 to 100 keV and the optical depth tau <4. Finally, with the high S/N spectra starting to come from NuSTAR it will soon be possible to better constrain the cut-off values in many AGN, allowing the determination of more physical models and so to better understand the continuum emission and geometry of the region surrounding black holes., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Through an optical campaign performed at 4 telescopes located in the northern and the southern hemispheres, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for 75 counterparts of unclassified or poorly studied hard X-ray emitting objects detected with Swift/BAT and listed in the 54 month Palermo BAT catalogue. All these objects have also observations taken with Swift/XRT, ROSAT or Chandra satellites which allowed us to reduce the high energy error box and pinpoint the most likely optical counterpart/s. We find that 69 sources in our sample are Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs); of them, 35 are classified as type 1 (with broad and narrow emission lines), 33 are classified as type 2 (with only narrow emission lines) and one is an high redshift QSO; the remaining 6 objects are galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs). Among type 1 AGNs, 32 are objects of intermediate Seyfert type (1.2-1.9) and one is Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy; for 29 out of 35 type 1 AGNs, we have been able to estimate the central black hole mass and the Eddington ratio. Among type 2 AGNs, two display optical features typical of the LINER class, 3 are classified as transition objects, 1 is a starburst galaxy and 2 are instead X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies. We report on the identification of a new soft gamma-ray source, namely IGR J20159+3713/SWIFT J2015.9+3715, first detected by INTEGRAL/IBIS and then confirmed by Swift/BAT. The source, which has an observed 20-100 keV flux in the range (0.7-1.4) x 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1), encloses a Fermi variable source (2FGL J2015.6+3709) and is spatially close to a TeV emitter (VER J2016+372). Thanks to X-ray follow-up observations performed with the X-ray telescope on board Swift, we have been able to identify the new IBIS/BAT detection with the combined emission of the blazar B2013+370 and the cataclysmic variable RX J2015.6+3711. Both objects show variability in X-rays, with the CV being the most variable of the two. At high energies (above 20 keV) the emission is likely dominated by B2013+370, but the contribution from RX J2015.6+3711 is not negligible. The blazar emits up to GeV frequencies where it is seen by Fermi, while the cataclysmic variable has a bremsstrahlung temperature which is too low to provide any contribution at these high energies. These findings also indicate that the INTEGRAL/Swift source is not associated with the TeV emission, which is most likely due to the supernova remnant (SNR)/pulsar wind nebula (PWN) CTB 87., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. The optical spectroscopic followup of 27 sources belonging to a sample of 30 high-energy objects selected by positionally cross correlating the first Fermi/LAT Catalog and the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog is presented here. It has been found or confirmed that 25 of them are BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs), while the remaining two are Galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs). This strongly suggests that the sources in the first group are responsible for the GeV emission detected with Fermi, while the two CVs most likely represent spurious associations. We thus find an 80% a posteriori probability that the sources selected by matching GeV and X-ray catalogs belong to the BL Lac class. We also show suggestions that the BL Lacs selected with this approach are probably high-synchrotron-peaked sources and in turn good candidates for the detection of ultra-high-energy (TeV) photons from them., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, one appendix, accepted for publication on A&A, main journal. This paper summarizes the development of a successful project, LAUE, supported by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and devoted to the development of long focal length (up to 100 m) Laue lenses for hard X--/soft gamma--ray astronomy (80-600 keV). The apparatus is ready and the assembling of a prototype lens petal is ongoing. The great achievement of this project is the use of bent crystals. From measurements obtained on single crystals and from simulations, we have estimated the expected Point Spread Function and thus the sensitivity of a lens made of petals. The expected sensitivity is a few $\times10^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ keV$^{-1}$. Within the framework of our program (running since 2004) of identification of hard X-ray INTEGRAL sources through optical spectroscopy, we present the results concerning the nature of 33 high-energy objects. The data were acquired with the use of six telescopes of different sizes and from one on-line archive. The results indicate that the majority of these objects (23 out of 33) are active galactic nuclei (AGNs), whereas 10 are sources in the local Universe with eight of which in the Galaxy and two in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Among the identified AGNs, 13 are of Type 1 (i.e., with broad emission lines), eight are of Type 2 (with narrow emissions only), and two are X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies with no apparent nuclear activity in the optical. Six of these AGNs lie at high redshift (z > 0.5). Concerning local objects, we found that five of them are Galactic cataclysmic variables, three are high-mass X-ray binaries (two of which lying in the SMC), one is a low-mass X-ray binary, and one is classified as a flare star that is likely of RS CVn type. In this paper, we present the hard X-ray spectral analysis of a complete sample of AGN de- tected by INTEGRAL/IBIS. In conjunction with IBIS spectra, we make use of Swift/BAT data, with the aim of cross-calibrating the two instruments, studying source variability and con- straining some important spectral parameters. We find that flux variability is present in at least 14% of the sample, while spectral variability is found only in one object. There is general good agreement between BAT and IBIS spectra, despite a systematic mismatch of about 22% in normalisation. When fitted with a simple power-law model, type 1 and type 2 sources appear to have very similar average photon indices, suggesting that they are powered by the same mechanism. As expected, we also find that a simple power-law does not always describe the data sufficiently well, thus indicating a certain degree of spectral complexity, which can be ascribed to features like a high energy cut-off and/or a reflection component. Fixing the reflection to be 0, 1 or 2, we find that our sample covers quite a large range in photon indices as well as cut-off energies; however, the spread is due only to a small number of objects, while the majority of the AGN lie within well defined boundaries of photon index (1<{\Gamma}<2) and cut-off energy (30

With respect to the recent INTEGRAL/IBIS 9-year Galactic Hard X-ray Survey (Krivonos et al. 2012), we use archival Swift/XRT observations in conjunction with multi-wavelength information to discuss the counterparts of a sample of newly discovered objects. The X-ray telescope (XRT, 0.3-10 keV) on board Swift, thanks to its few arcseconds source location accuracy, has been proven to be a powerful tool with which the X-ray counterparts to these IBIS sources can be searched for and studied. In this work, we present the outcome of this analysis by discussing four objects (SWIFT J0958.0-4208, SWIFT J1508.6-4953, IGR J17157-5449, and IGR J22534+6243) having either X-ray data of sufficient quality to perform a reliable spectral analysis or having interesting multiwaveband properties. We find that SWIFT J1508.6-4953 is most likely a Blazar, while IGR J22534+6243 is probably a HMXB. The remaining two objects may be contaminated by nearby X-ray sources and their class can be inferred only by means of optical follow-up observations of all likely counterparts., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. The most recent all-sky surveys performed with the INTEGRAL and SWIFT satellites allowed the detection of more than 1500 sources in hard X-rays above 20 keV. About one quarter of them has no obvious counterpart at other wavelengths and therefore could not be associated with any known class of high-energy emitting objects. Although cross-correlation with catalogues or surveys at other wavelengths (especially soft X-rays) is of invaluable support in pinpointing the putative optical candidates, only accurate optical spectroscopy can reveal the true nature of these sources. With the aim of identifying them, we started in 2004 an optical spectroscopy program which uses data from several telescopes worldwide and which proved extremely successful, leading to the identification of about 200 INTEGRAL objects and nearly 130 Swift sources. The determination of the broad (0.1-100 keV) spectra of active galaxies is crucial for understanding and discriminating among emission models, for estimating the properties of the Comptonising/reflecting region around the central black hole and for obtaining a firm description of the contribution of AGN to the Cosmic X-ray Background. Although broad-band X-ray measurements of AGN have been made in the past, these did not generally pertain to a complete sample of sources. Since few years, we have started a systematic analysis of the 0.1-100 keV spectra of a complete sample of AGN selected in the hard X-ray band (20-40 keV) using low energy data (not always of good quality) from a set of operating X-ray telescopes. Thanks to data obtained through an XMM-Newton Large Programme, we have now high quality 0.1-10 keV data for all sources in the sample; these combined with high energy observations from INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT will allow us to study the spectral properties of this complete sample. Here in particular, we report the progress made on type 1 AGN, focusing in particular on the continuum and its high energy cut-off, the reflection fraction, the absorption properties and the presence of soft excesses and warm absorbers in our sources. In this work we present the most comprehensive INTEGRAL AGN sample which lists 272 objects. Here we mainly use this sample to study the absorption properties of active galaxies, to probe new AGN classes and to test the AGN unification scheme. We find that half (48%) of the sample is absorbed while the fraction of Compton thick AGN is small (~7%). In line with our previous analysis, we have however shown that when the bias towards heavily absorbed objects which are lost if weak and at large distance is removed, as it is possible in the local Universe, the above fractions increase to become 80% and 17%. We also find that absorption is a function of source luminosity, which implies some evolution in the obscuration properties of AGN. Few peculiar classes, so far poorly studied in the hard X-ray band, have been detected and studied for the first time such as 5 XBONG, 5 type 2 QSOs and 11 LINERs. In terms of optical classification, our sample contains 57% of type 1 and 43% of type 2 AGN; this subdivision is similar to that found in X-rays if unabsorbed versus absorbed objects are considered, suggesting that the match between optical and X-ray classification is overall good. Only a small percentage of sources (12%) does not fulfill the expectation of the unified theory as we find 22 type 1 AGN which are absorbed and 10 type 2 AGN which are unabsorbed. Studying in depth these outliers we found that most of the absorbed type 1 AGN have X-ray spectra characterized by either complex or warm/ionized absorption more likely due to ionized gas located in an accretion disk wind or in the biconical structure associated to the central nucleus, therefore unrelated to the toroidal structure. Among 10 type 2 AGN which resulted to be unabsorbed, at most 3-4% is still eligible to be classified as a "true" type 2 AGN., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. Through an optical campaign performed at 4 telescopes located in the northern and the southern hemispheres, plus archival data from two on-line sky surveys, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for 29 counterparts of unclassified or poorly studied hard X-ray emitting objects detected with Swift/BAT and listed in the 39 months Palermo catalogue. All these objects have also observations taken with Swift/XRT or XMM-EPIC which not only allow us to pinpoint their optical counterpart, but also to study their X-ray spectral properties (column density, power law photon index and F2-10 keV flux). We find that 28 sources in our sample are AGN; 7 are classified as type 1 while 21 are of type 2; the remaining object is a galactic cataclysmic variable. Among our type 1 AGN, we find 5 objects of intermediate Seyfert type (1.2-1.9) and one Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy; for 4 out of 7 sources, we have been able to estimate the central black hole mass. Three of the type 2 AGN of our sample display optical features typical of the LINER class and one is a likely Compton thick AGN. All galaxies classified in this work are relatively nearby objects since their redshifts lie in the range 0.008-0.075; the only galactic object found lies at an estimated distance of 90 pc. We have also investigated the optical versus X-ray emission ratio of the galaxies of our sample to test the AGN unified model. For them, we have also compared the X-ray absorption (due to gas) with the optical reddening (due to dust): we find that for most of our sources, specifically those of type 1.9-2.0 the former is higher than the latter confirming early results by Maiolino et al. We report on the identification of a new soft gamma-ray source, IGR J12319-0749, detected with the IBIS imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The source, which has an observed 20-100 keV flux of ~8.3 x 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, is spatially coincident with an AGN at redshift z=3.12. The broad-band continuum, obtained by combining XRT and IBIS data, is flat (Gamma ~ 1.3) with evidence for a spectral break around 25 keV (100 keV in the source rest frame). X-ray observations indicate flux variability which is further supported by a comparison with a previous ROSAT measurement. IGR J12319-0749 is also a radio emitting object likely characterized by a flat spectrum and high radio loudness; optically it is a broad-line emitting object with a massive black hole (2.8 x 10^{9}$ solar masses) at its center. The source Spectral Energy Distribution is similar to another high redshift blazar, 225155+2217 at z=3.668: both objects are bright, with a large accretion disk luminosity and a Compton peak located in the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray band. (Abridged) Since its launch in October 2002, the INTEGRAL satellite has revolutionized our knowledge of the hard X-ray sky thanks to its unprecedented imaging capabilities and source detection positional accuracy above 20 keV. Nevertheless, many of the newly-detected sources in the INTEGRAL sky surveys are of unknown nature. The combined use of available information at longer wavelengths (mainly soft X-rays and radio) and of optical spectroscopy on the putative counterparts of these new hard X-ray objects allows us to pinpoint their exact nature. Continuing our long-standing program that has been running since 2004, and using 6 different telescopes of various sizes, we report the classification through optical spectroscopy of 22 more unidentified or poorly studied high-energy sources detected with the IBIS instrument onboard INTEGRAL. We found that 16 of them are active galactic nuclei (AGNs), while the remaining 6 objects are within our Galaxy. Among the identified extragalactic sources, 14 are Type 1 AGNs; of these, 6 lie at redshift larger than 0.5 and one has z = 3.12, which makes it the second farthest object detected in the INTEGRAL surveys up to now. The remaining AGNs are of type 2, and one of them is a pair of interacting Seyfert 2 galaxies. The Galactic objects are identified as two cataclysmic variables, one high-mass X-ray binary, one symbiotic binary and two chromospherically active stars. We thus still find that AGNs are the most abundant population among hard X-ray objects identified through optical spectroscopy. Moreover, we note that the higher sensitivity of the more recent INTEGRAL surveys is now enabling the detection of high-redshift AGNs, thus allowing the exploration of the most distant hard X-ray emitting sources and possibly of the most extreme blazars., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics, main journal

Presented in this work is the most comprehensive INTEGRAL AGN sample: it includes 272 active galaxies for which optical identifications and redshifts are available. 2-10 keV fluxes and column density measurements are also collected for all the sample sources. For 33 new hard X-ray discovered AGN with no previous X-ray coverage, XRT and XMM data analysis is reported for the first time in this work. In this paper we report on the broadband X-ray properties of a complete sample of 33 absorbed Seyfert galaxies hard X-ray selected with integral. The high quality broadband spectra obtained with both xmm, and integral-IBIS data are well reproduced with an absorbed primary emission with a high energy cutoff and its scattered fraction below 2-3 keV, plus the Compton reflection features. A high energy cut-off is found in 30% of the sample, with an average value below 150 keV. The diagnostic plot NH vs Fobs(2-10 keV)/F(20-100 keV) allowed the isolation of the Compton thick objects, and may represent a useful tool for future hard X-ray observations of newly discovered AGN. We are unable to associate the reflection components with the absorbing gas as a torus, a more complex scenario being necessary. In the Compton thin sources, a fraction (but not all) of the Fe K line needs to be produced in a gas possibly associated with the optical Broad Line Region, responsible also for the absorption. We still need a Compton thick medium (not intercepting the line of sight) likely associated to a torus, which contributes to the Fe line intensity and produces the observed reflection continuum above 10 keV. The so-called Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect can not be confirmed with our data. Finally, the comparison with a sample of unobscured AGN shows that, type 1 and type 2 (once corrected for absorption) Seyfert are characterized by the same nuclear/accretion properties (luminosity, bolometric luminosity, Eddington ratio), supporting the "unified" view., Comment: talk at the conference "The Extreme and Variable High Energy Sky", September 19-23, 2011, Chia Laguna, Sardegna (Italy). 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication on PoS(Extremesky 2011)045

We present new Suzaku and Fermi data, and re-analyzed archival hard X-ray data from INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT survey, to investigate the physical properties of the luminous, high-redshift, hard X-ray selected blazar IGR J22517+2217, through the modelization of its broad band spectral energy distribution (SED) in two different activity states. Through the analysis of the new Suzaku data and the flux selected data from archival hard X-ray observations, we build the source SED in two different states, one for the newly discovered flare occurred in 2005 and one for the following quiescent period. Both SEDs are strongly dominated by the high energy hump peaked at 10^20 -10^22 Hz, that is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the low energy (synchrotron) one at 10^11 -10^14 Hz, and varies by a factor of 10 between the two states. In both states the high energy hump is modeled as inverse Compton emission between relativistic electrons and seed photons produced externally to the jet, while the synchrotron self-Compton component is found to be negligible. In our model the observed variability can be accounted for by a variation of the total number of emitting electrons, and by a dissipation region radius changing from within to outside the broad line region as the luminosity increases. In its flaring activity, IGR J22517+2217 shows one of the most powerful jet among the population of extreme, hard X-ray selected, high redshift blazar observed so far., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS
