An equation published by Loftin, Waddell, Robinson, and Owens (2010) was cross-validated using ten normal-weight walkers, ten overweight walkers, and ten distance runners. Energy expenditure was measured at preferred walking (normal-weight walker and overweight walkers) or running pace (distance runners) for 5 min and corrected to a mile. Energy expenditure per mile was predicted using the Loftin et al. (2010) equation yielding a mean predicted value of 99.7 ± 13.8 kcal · mile[superscript -1]. This was significantly different (p < 0.05) than the mean actual value from the cross-validation group (107.8 ± 15.5 kcal · mile[superscript -1]), although the difference was within the published standard error of estimate. A Chow test revealed no significant differences between regression coefficients of the original equation and the cross-validation group equation. It appears the Loftin et al. (2010) regression equation is useful for exercise prescription of energy expenditure for walking or running a mile in normal-weight and overweight adults.

The gains in knowledge and changes of attitudes of students in undergraduate sexuality courses in two different academic disciplines were compared to those of their peers without college sexuality education in a variety of other psychology courses. All students had similar scores on tests of sexual anatomy, behavior, and health at the start of the semester, but the students enrolled in sexuality courses exhibited much larger increases in knowledge regarding these topics when their courses were done. Sexuality education clearly matters, but there is room for improvement; despite gains in knowledge, the sexuality students' scores were less than perfect. Students in both the sexuality courses and other psychology courses maintained neutral attitudes toward same-sex sexual orientation and gender reassignment surgery, and these attitudes did not change following enrollment in a semester-long course in sexuality education. Objective: The authors' purpose in this study was to investigate the influence of knowledge of osteoporosis, attitudes regarding osteoporosis, and knowledge of dietary calcium on dairy product intake in both male and female college-age students. Participants: The authors conducted this cross-sectional study on 911 men and women enrolled in 2 demographically similar universities. Methods: A modified osteoporosis knowledge questionnaire assessed participant's general osteoporosis knowledge and perceived disease risk. Results: The authors found that knowledge of osteoporosis and calcium did not significantly influence dairy product intake. Attitude regarding osteoporosis was a significant predictor of dairy product intake in men but was not significant for the women. Conclusions: The authors recommend development and implementation of educational programs designed to increase awareness of calcium-rich food sources as well as other risk factors of this crippling disease. Low bone mineral density (BMD) has been determined as an independent factor of osteoporosis. The purpose of this study was to assess physical activity's effect on BMD in college-aged women. Bone density measurements were obtained. A survey was administered to assess past and recent physical activity levels. Logistic regression revealed high school sports participation and lean tissue were significant predictors of femoral BMD, whereas present physical activity and lean tissue were significant predictors of spinal BMD. Women in the present study who did not participate in high school sports were 7 times more likely to have low BMD than were those who participated. This study revealed a protective effect of past and present physical activity on BMD in college-aged women. Children and young adults should be encouraged to participate in physical activity because it helps reduce their risk factors for osteoporosis later in life. Responses to life stressors are associated with negative behaviors that may increase risk for illness and injury. The effect of high intensity exercise in reducing reactivity to psychological stress has been well documented among older people. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effect of weight-training versus aerobic dance on psychological stress in college students. 45 students participated in a weight-training course, 35 students participated in aerobic dance classes, and 34 students served as a control group. The Survey of Recent Life Experiences was used to appraise stressfulness of current experiences before and after exercise intervention. On immediate retest after 8 wk. of weight-training perceived stress was significantly reduced when compared with an 8-wk. aerobic dance program, but there were no significant differences between the control group and the weight-training group or the aerobic dance group. These results suggest that a regular routine of low intensity exercise such as weight-training may reduce perceived stress on an immediate test.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of type of physical activity on bone mineral density among older U.S. women. Findings from the present study indicate that jogging, swimming and calisthenics were weak predictors for high bone density values. Bicycling, aerobics, walking and dancing were moderate predictors for positive bone density. Yard work and weight training were strong and independent predictors for positive bone density. KEYWORDS. Manufacturing, specifically food and beverage production, is a key employer in rural areas and has linkages to the agricultural sector. Using data drawn from the National Establishment Time‐Series for 2013–15, we explore what entrepreneurship, farm marketing channel innovations, and more traditional spatial factors influence the location decisions of food and beverage manufacturing establishment start‐ups in the U.S. We find that traditional spatial decision factors still matter but, in addition, proxies for farm adoption of downstream innovations are also related to start‐ups. We conclude by discussing implications of our findings for food market dynamics and rural economic development policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental sociology and the sociology of natural resources have become two established research areas in the United States with distinct institutional origins, research themes, and theoretical roots, as well as associated professional networks, journals, and conferences. Existing discussions of the relationships between the two subdisciplines are largely based on personal reflections and exploratory analyses. However, there is still not a clear understanding of the overall picture of interdisciplinary sociological research on human–nature interactions. In this study we conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 8027 articles published in 30 selected academic journals during 1985–2017. Findings of this research provide a more complete view of the intellectual landscape of environmental and resource sociology. Overall, the study produces an empirically-based characterization of environmental sociology and the sociology of natural resources in terms of coauthorship and citation networks, and highlights the need for more sustained synthesis across different knowledge domains. Introduction: Asian-Indians haveahigh incidence rate ot osteoporosis. Assessing knowledge and beliefs is the first step towards improving health behaviors to decrease the prevalence of osteoporosis. It is in this context that the purpose ot this study is to assess Mississippian Asian- Indians' osteoporosis-related knowledge, beliefs, and self-efficacy. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was utilized. Convenience sampling and snowball sampling were used to recruit participants in North Mississippi. Participants were asked to complete a self- administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were performed to assess levels of knowledge, beliefs, and self-efficacy. Pearson correlation analysis and independent sample t-tests were conducted to assess the potential relationships between study variables. Results: This study had a total of 10S participants. The average age ot participants was 28 years. About two-thirds (65.7%) ofthe participants were males. Participants demonstrated low-levels of osteoporosis knowledge, perceived severity, and perceived susceptibility. On the other hand, participants had high levels ot perceived self-efficacy and moderate levels of health motivation. Moreover, results indicated that females perceived they had a greater risk ot osteoporosis. Conclusion: There is a need for health education programs directed towards addressing osteoporosis-related knowledge. In addition, there is a need to change beliefs and perceptions about osteoporosis among Asian-Indians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
