Abstract The fate of cadmium at the Muharram Aisha wastewater treatment plant in Karbala governorate, Iraq was studied using the TOXCHEM model. Cadmium, a known carcinogen, and is considered one of the most dangerous heavy metals and high concentrations, greater than permissible limits, were found in the treated wastewater. The plant operates using an activated sludge system and this was modeled via TOXCHEM with a sensitivity analysis carried out on the extended aeration system. Prior to analysis, the model was calibrated and validated for cadmium, with the adjustments leading to a mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) of 0.0001 and 0.81, respectively. The mass balance of cadmium in the Muharram Aisha treatment plant was found to be 4832.44 g/day (37.1726%) in the treated wastewater and 8164.52 g/day (62.804%) in the sludge, which indicated that the mix liquor suspended solid (MLSS) was the most sensitive factor. The sensitivity to cadmium was analyzed via MLSS in the extended aeration system and the results o indicated that the higher the MLSS concentration (mg/L), the greater the removal of cadmium in the treated wastewater. It was found that increasing the MLSS through a biological treatment method reduced the concentration of cadmium without the need for additional of any (potentially harmful) chemical treatments. The plant was subsequently operated for a period of 5 months with the MLSS increased from 1500 to 4500 mg/L, and this reduced the concentration of cadmium in the wastewater from 0.36 to 0.01 mg/L as a consequence. This research demonstrates how the novel application of TOXCHEM can be a useful tool in the reduction of heavy metal contamination in the environment.

Abstract Climate change has placed considerable pressure on the residential environment, agricultural, and water supplies in different areas of the world, especially arid places such as Iraq. Iraq is one of the five most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change, where it has been encountering extremes heat waves during the most recent decades resulted in drought, desertification, and rivers dried up, which led to thousands of hectares to turn dry and yellow. This study aims to investigate the trends of climate change in the middle and western regions of Iraq and future expectations. The daily maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and precipitation are downscaled using the Long Ashton Research Station Weather Generator (LARS-WG) model. Five General Circulation Models (GCMs) from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) are employed for three future periods: the near future (2021–2040), medium future (2051–2070), and far future (2081–2100), based on two scenarios of the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) for four selected meteorological stations representing the study area. The outcomes of the calibration and validation of the model supported its skill and reliability to downscale precipitation and temperature time series for statistical indices (R2, RMSE and MBE) ranging between (0.894–0.998), (0.1270–1.9274) and (− 0.6158 to 0.0008), respectively. The results showed that the average minimum and maximum annual temperatures will increase at all selected stations across the three future periods by between 0.94 and 4.98 °C by the end of the twenty-first century. Annual changes in precipitation tend generally towards increase for the study area by average (6.09–14.31%) for RCP4.5 and (11.25–20.97%) for RCP8.5 Compared to the historical data (1990–2020). These findings can contribute to become more acquainted with the effects of climate change on the environment and encourage managers and planners to come up with plans for mitigating and adapting to these effects. They can also serve as a guide for future management of water and agricultural resources in the study region.

H2S is one of the principal odor gases released from sewer networks and understanding the rate of H2S release into sewer air space and ventilation to the atmosphere is crucial for preventing or minimizing odor and corrosion issues in sewer systems. TOXCHEM model was used to simulate the fate of H2S gas in roads for this study. The model was calibrated for the spring and summer seasons and validated for the remainder of the seasons. The predicted behavior showed good correlation to measurements on real samples following statistical analysis, with R2, R, and RMSE results between (0.93–0.97), (0.8–0.82), and (0.000438–0.000838), respectively. A sensitivity study was performed to assess the effect of various pH values, drop heights, tailwater depths, stream widths, and sewer ventilation rate levels. The results showed that the emissions concentrations for winter, spring, summer, and autumn reached 3500, 5044, 6425, and 4045 ppm respectively. All the emissions levels from this DS can be considered hazardous, and this was particularly evident during the summer months. This study has helped to clarify the fate and emission of hydrogen sulfide gas at the DS by simulation using a TOXCHEM model. HIGHLIGHTS The drop structure can substantially increase the emission of hydrogen sulfide from the liquid phase to the air phase.; Discussion of the most important factors that contribute to the emission of H2S gas in the drop structures.; Determination of the amount of hydrogen sulfide gas emission in the sulfate-rich wastewater.; The use of the TOXCHEM model to simulate the emission of hydrogen sulfide gas in the drop structure.;

Evapotranspiration represents one of the main parameters in the hydrological cycle. It is usually expressed by the term Reference evapotranspiration (ETo), that is affected by some meteorological parameters. This study aims to find the difference amount in reference evapotranspiration (ETo) between urban and suburban quarters in Karbala city. Study methodology includes selecting once urban area and four suburban quarters. Two methods of determining the reference evapotranspiration were applied. First, a direct method which measured reference evapotranspiration (ETo) at selected fields by using a hand-held device. Second, an indirect method was used Penman-Montieth equation. The findings showed that magnitudes of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) by Penman-Montieth equation are higher than the values measured by the direct method for urban and suburban quarters. Also, it was found that the absolute percentage of difference in the average amount of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) between urban and suburban quarters is 13% by using the direct method and 61% by using Penman-Montieth equation. Study conclusions are suburban area has higher magnitude of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) than urban quarter by using any of direct method and indirect method (Penman-Montieth equation).

The emission and fate of methyl mercaptan from the residential complex treatment plant (RCTP) moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) process in the city of Al-Hur in Karbala governorate in Iraq were studied using the TOXCHEM 4.1 model. The release of odorous sulfur compounds from treatment plants harms workers and the surrounding area. Methyl mercaptan, in particular, is responsible for odors similar to rotten cabbage. The sensitivity analysis for the methyl compounds in the MBBR system was conducted based on the following factors: a large thick biofilm layer, the specific surface area of media, media fill fraction, and aeration flowrate. The model was validated via RMSE and R, which showed the model outputs are representatives of real-world observations. Degradation and emission were shown to be the two most important processes in the system. During the summer (32 °C) and winter (12 °C), about 13 and 10%, 2 and 4%, 0.5 and 1%, and 85 and 85% were emitted into the atmosphere, discharged with effluent, sorbed into sludge, and biodegraded, respectively. The overall concentrations of CH4S emitted in summer and winter were 1.78 and 1.38 ppm, respectively. Operating the MBBR system with a thick biofilm layer, a large specific surface area of media, a greater media fill fraction, and a low aeration rate contributed significantly to the decomposition of methyl mercaptan and thus decreased emission into the atmosphere. Finally, the TOXCHEM simulation accurately predicts the fate of CH4S and the emissions inherent to the MBBR system. The manipulation of the operating factors led to the improvement of the system and the reduction of methyl mercaptan gas emissions without the need to add units and chemical additives. HIGHLIGHTS The methyl mercaptan emitted by a full-scale MBBR WWTP was studied.; Aeration tank and equalization basin emitted the highest CH4S concentrations.; TOXCHEM modeling was used to calculate the distribution of CH4S around the WWTP.; CH4S concentrations exceeded the threshold limit at this plant.; CH4S emission was affected by the following three main factors: biodegradation, absorption by the sludge, and stripping.;

This research aimed to create a novel technique for recovering fertilizers from aquaculture effluent to overcome potential non-renewable fertilizers shortages. There are two steps: a photocatalyst technique for nutrient mobilization, succeeded by solids precipitating with two natural and one synthetic flocculants. The photocatalytic degradation of organonitrogen compounds in batch experiments started under the irradiation of sunlight. Following that, photocatalytic breakdown of organonitrogen compounds produces inorganic nitrogen constituents like NH4+, NO2−, and NO3−, which could be used as manure. It was found that, after 12 h of circulation, the concentration of inorganic nitrogen became NH4+ = 17.2 g/L, NO2− = 18.1 mg/L, and NO3− = 15.9 mg/L. The jar test was adopted to assess the capacity of two natural compounds (tamarind kernel polysaccharide (TKP) and tannin-based substance (TBS)) and synthetic water-soluble polymer cationic polyacrylamide (SWP) to reduce turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colour. The findings revealed that with a dose of 20 mg/L of TBS, 20 mg/L of TKP, and 50 mg/L of SWP, the maximum turbidity reductions were 95, 93, and 94%, respectively. The TBS was slightly better than TKP and much better than SWP in terms of coagulation activities with TSS, COD and colour maximum removal efficiencies. Flooding of stormwater drainage systems represents a major problem in developing urban areas that could be influenced by land-use and climate change. Flooding problems can be assessed using simulation models such as the stormwater management model (SWMM). In this study, the generation of intensity duration frequency curves (IDF) that integrates climate change effect was conducted for Al-Najaf Governorate in Iraq for the first time. In addition, the effects of land-use and climate change on the stormwater sewer system of Al-Ameer District was simulated using SWMM. The results indicated that by increasing the sub-catchment area from 50 to 100%, an increment in total surface runoff from 20,380 to 37,350 m3, and total flooding from 10,513 to 26,032 m3 have occurred, respectively. As a response to climate change, changing the return period from 2 to 5 years has increased the total surface runoff from 14,120 to 27,110 m3 (representing 48% of raise), and total flooding increased from 5,914 to 17,591 m3 (accounting 72% of increment). To conclude, flooding locations and magnitude were identified, whilst the system failed to discharge surface runoff at critical conditions, whereas the effect of climate change on the stormwater drainage system was more adverse than the effect of land-use. HIGHLIGHTS An IDF curve was generated for the first time for Al-Najaf Governorate.; SWMM successfully simulated the stormwater drainage system in the study area.; The system will not withstand climate change impacts in the next 10 years.; Change in land-use has increased impervious surfaces, causing floods in downstream.; Flooding locations and magnitude, and number of flooded manholes were identified.;

The profile of microbial diversity in a NABR digesting RPMW was investigated using phylogeneticanalysis of partial 16S rRNA sequences by a neighbor-joining-tree, supported by microbial morphology analysis by SEM. The results showed that microorganism inside NABR consisted of dominant Bacillus (25 strains) and Bacterium (1 strain) which were isolated from the settled sludge at the bottom of the reactor, whilst Bacillus (2 strains), Pseudomonas (2 strain) and Chryseobacterium (2 strain) were isolated from the biofilm formed on the packing material. It revealed that the microbial community strains, function, and structure changed simultaneously throughout the reactor system. The microscopic results showed rich biofacies, while the dominant microorganisms have various morphologies in every compartment of the system. It consisted of a long rod-shaped and filamentous bacterium composed majorly of bacilli of different sizes. Although the study successfully analyzed the microbial diversity and morphology in the system, the microbial communities reported in this study were different from other similar studies. This may be caused by the application of a culture-based technique that usually provides limited information due to the number of barely cultivated or uncultured strains

Abstract Odors due to the emission of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have been a concern in the sewage treatment plants over the last decades. H2S fate and emissions from extended aeration activated sludge (EAAS) system in Muharram Aisha-sewage treatment plant (MA-STP) were studied using TOXCHEM model. Sensitivity analysis at different aeration flowrate, H2S loading rate, wastewater pH, wastewater temperature and wind speed were studied. The predicted data were validated against actual results, where all the data were validated within the limits, and the statistical evaluation of normalized mean square error (NMSE), geometric variance (VG), and correlation coefficient (R) were close to the ideal fit. The results showed that the major processes occurring in the system were degradation and emission. During summer (27 °C) and winter (12 °C), about 25 and 23%, 1 and 2%, 2 and 2%, and 72 and 73% were fated as emitted to air, discharged with effluent, sorbed to sludge, and biodegraded, respectively. At summer and winter, the total emitted concentrations of H2S were 6.403 and 5.614 ppm, respectively. The sensitivity results indicated that aeration flowrate, H2S loading rate and wastewater pH highly influenced the emission and degradation of H2S processes compared to wastewater temperature and wind speed. To conclude, TOXCHEM model successfully predicted the H2S fate and emissions in EAAS system.

Groundwater is one of the most important water resources in Iraq, so efficient management of storage, recharge, and consumption rates is required, for maintaining the sustainability of groundwater supplies. Some of the most valuable methods for ensuring the long-term sustainability of groundwater aquifers are those that provide artificial recharge. This study was conducted to determine the effect of artificial recharge on groundwater levels and quality in Iraq’s Dibdibba unconfined aquifer, utilizing groundwater modeling system software (GMS). Reclaimed water (tertiary treatment) from Kerbala’s central wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was used as raw water to recharge the aquifer. The effects of this artificial recharge were determined using built-up groundwater flow (MODFLOW) and dissolved transport (MT3DMS) simulation models. Model calibration and validation were implemented based on groundwater monitoring data from 2016 to 2017. The model matched observed elevations at R2 = 0.96 for steady state and R2 = 0.92 in transient state simulations. After the 3D numerical model was calibrated and validated, two scenarios were explored based on the daily production of 5000 and 10,000 m3/d from Karbala’s WWTP. The results indicated that the pumping of the treated wastewater through the pond would increase water levels by more than 20 cm for more than 78.2 and 110 km2 for pumping rates of 5000 and 10,000 m3/day, respectively. More than 40 km2 would be added (reclaimed) to the agricultural areas in the region as a result of the use of artificial recharge using a pond. Groundwater quality was also improved, as the TDS decreased by more than 55%, down to 1900 ppm, and the EC decreased by more than 68%, down to 1500 µ.S/cm. The findings of this study can assist decision-makers in developing strategies to reduce water scarcity and adapt to climate change.

Groundwater in Iraq is considered to be an alternative water resource, especially for areas far away from surface water. Groundwater is affected by many factors including climate change, industrial activities, urbanization, and industrialization. In this study, the effect of artificial recharge on the quantity of groundwater in the Dibdibba unconfined aquifer in Iraq was simulated using a groundwater modeling system (GMS). The main raw water source used in the artificial recharge process was the reclaimed water output (tertiary treatment) from the main wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Kerbala, with 20 injection wells. After calibration and validation of the three-dimensional numerical model used in this study and taking wastewater recharge rates into account, two different scenarios were applied to obtain the expected behavior of the aquifer when the groundwater levels were augmented with 5% and 10% of the daily outflow production of the WWTP in Kerbala. The model matched the observed head elevations with R2 = 0.951 for steady state and R2= 0.894 for transient simulations. The results indicate that the injection of treated water through 20 wells raised the water table in more than 91 and 136 km2 for 5000 and 10,000 m3/day pumping rates, respectively. Moreover, increasing the volume of water added to the aquifer could lead to establishing new agricultural areas, spanning more than 62 km2, extending about 20 km along the river.

Storm sewer systems face many challenges in urban areas, in particular those systems which are old and surpassing their design period. This study has used data from an urbanized, subcatchment covering 360 ha of dead run watershed in the Alkadeer district, Karbala, Iraq. Physically based models, Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis (ASSA) and multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR), were applied. Hydrology data from 1980 to 2013 were inputted and examined over three scenarios. The results indicated that significant increase in peak flooding was produced by an increase in discharge values which may occur through a higher rainfall intensity. The model was examined and new equations were developed that may help us to better understand the hydraulic and hydrologic simulations that are identified as having the potential to better protect the environment against sudden rainfall intensities. The ratio of area of subcatchment to cross-sectional area of a pipe (Ac/Ap), the ratio of slope of subcatchment to slope of a pipe (Sc/Sp), and the ratio of velocity in subcatchment to velocity in a pipe (Vc/Vp) were the most sensitive parameters informing the ratio of runoff discharge of a subcatchment pipe discharge (Qc/Qp). This study suggests that a more effective management of the storm water system under critical circumstances could be achieved by limiting the above parameters and this increases the efficiency of storm water facilities.
