Trabajo presentado en el 2nd International congress on Permian and Triassic, celebrado en Casablanca (Marruecos), del 25 al 27 de abril de 2018, The Permian volcanism of the Eastern Rehamna massif (Western Meseta) displays two large outcrops: (i) Mechra Ben Abbou to the N and (ii) Benguerir to the S. The volcanism of Mechra Ben Abbou is often interbedded in Stephanian/Autunian sandstones/conglomerates (e.g., Gigout, 1952; Hoepffner, 1982; etc.), and appears as massive/fluidal andesitic lava flows and rhyolitic domes (e.g., the Bled Mekrach garnet-bearing rhyolitic dome). The thickness of these volcanics varies from a few tens of to 500 meters depending on their proximity to the effusive centers. The latter are situated either on/near the N40E lateorogenic dextral strike-slip Wadi Tarfa fault (Hoepffner, 1982) or along the half-graben bounding the Nahilat normal fault (e.g., El Kamel and Muller, 1987; Muller et al., 1990). In the southeastern Rehamna, east of the Benguerir City, there are also massive/fluidal lava flows (andesites) and isolated volcaniclastics overlying the Autunian conglomerates (similar to those of Mechra Ben Abbou). Rhyolitic domes intruding andesitic lava flows with mingling structures at their interface also occur, showing that the rhyolitic domes and the andesitic, ava flows were synchronous (Baudin et al., 2003). Another outcrop of andesitic lava flows overlies an hercynian outcrop (the Jbel Kharrou structure). Late-Hercynian microgranite and microdiorite dyke swarms and sill complexes are also present in Rehamna trending N-S to N30 (more rarely N90 to N130; Gigout, 1952; Hoepffner, 1982; etc.). They fill subvertical fractures (dykes) or more frequently cleavage (sills) with thicknesses varying from 1 to 10 m (reaching 20 m). They can be lenticular over a few meters or extend over several kilometers (Hoepffner, 1982). They were emplaced after the lower Permian molasses and before the Triassic: they intrude the Rehamna granite (268 ± 6 Ma; Mrini et al., 1992) and do not crosscut the Triassic cover. One of these dykes penetrates an overlapping contact affecting the first Permian detrital deposits of Formation 1. This overlapping fault is sealed by the last terms of this Formation (El Kamel and Muller, 1987, Muller et al., 1990). The microgranitic dykes display intraplate and calco-alkaline affinities and were emplaced at 285.4 ± 6.1 Ma (Baudin et al., 2003; Bensalah, 2012). We provide new insights into the mineralogy, geochemistry and geochronology of the Rehamna volcanism affecting the northwestern Gondwanaland Permian margin. The studied volcanics are typical orogenic calc-alkaline magmatism. The origin of garnet in the Bled Mekrach rhyolites (phenocrysts, xenocrysts, restites, or secondary reaction products) will be discussed on the basis of their textures, mineral relationships and chemistry data. We determined U-Pb zircon ages by Sensitive High-Resolution Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP) on the Bled Mekrach garnet-bearing rhyolitic dome. The sample BM 20 (GPS: 32°38'19.21"N, 7°45'5.23"W) yielded two predominant ages (611 ± 20 Ma and 285.3 ± 4.9 Ma): the last age is more concordant, being interpreted as the age of crystallization of rhyolites, while 611 Ma indicate inherited zircon that is sourced from the Pan-African crust under the Rehamna. The 285 Ma rhyolite age is very similar to that one obtained on the microgranitic dykes.

Trabajo presentado en el 2nd International Congress on Permian and Triassic, celebrado en Casablanca (Marruecos), del 24 al 27 de abril de 2018, The NE-SW Tsesdai basin (110 km to the SE of Rabat) is the third largest Late Palaeozoic continental trough in the northern Central Moroccan Meseta. It is, (i) the volcanic complex is Permian s.l. (post-Carboniferous and pre-Triassic, presumably Stephanian/Permian) a percept based on (a) the intrusion of rhyolites into the Visean deep marine siliciclastics of the basement (shark-fin rhyolitic dome of Ari el Mahsar extrusive and its satellite dykes); (b) the angular unconformity between the red detritic sediments and the Visean siliciclastics folded during the late Westphalian A; (c) the presence of reworked rhyolitic/andesitic pebbles in the red sediments of the Tsesdai basin and their absence in the detrital sediments of the Westphalian C/ D preserved nearby in the Sidi Kacem graben; (d) the angular unconformity between the Triassic and the red detritals; and (d) strike-slip fault that postdates the basin sedimentary/volcanic formations and predates the Triassic/Cenozoic. (ii) the distinction of 3 major volcanic pulses: the first one (mainly andesitic) predates the Permian series; witnesses of this pulse can still be observed in Tiddas, but most material is reworked in the conglomerates; the second pulse is synsedimentary, displays different petrographic characteristics, and it is remarkable for its andesitic lava flows interbedded with the detritals. The third pulse of intrusive rhyolitic dykes precedes the Ari el Mahsar rhyolitic dome emplacement and the dacitic flows. (iii) identification of three intra-permian tectonic events. The close relationship between volcanism and fracturation is obvious: dykes and effusive centers are located in relation with N40-N70 faults, mostly strike-slip. We present new insights on the petrology and geochronology of the Tsesdai Permian volcanism affecting the northwestern Gondwanaland margin. Trabajo presentado en el XV Congreso Geológico Chileno, celebrado en Concepción (Chile), del 18 al 23 de Noviembre de 2018, Along the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwana, from Venezuela to northeastern Patagonia, the Early–Middle Ordovician Famatinian orogeny was the first orogenic event following assembly of the supercontinent. Magmatism is mostly restricted to the interval 463±4 to 486±7 Ma, with the most intense period of emplacement between 468 and 472 Ma constituting a magmatic flare-up. Granitoid emplacement in both northeastern Patagonia and the Cordon de Lila (Puna Altiplano, Chile) was effectively synchronous with that in the Sierras Pampeanas, defining a continuous belt. Combined geochemical and isotopic data (whole-rock Sr, Nd; Hf, O in zircon) indicate that the source of calcic metaluminous suites is the subcontinental lithosphere –both mantle and mafic lower crust– with variable contamination by the Early Paleozoic metasedimentary country rocks. The lithospheric mantle involved is assumed to underlie the outcropping 1330–1030 Ma Grenville-age basement of the Western Domain, which exhibits tectonic characteristics of active continental margin in the north and oceanic arc-back arc in the south. The latter sector is the potential source of some minor Famatinian igneous rocks with less evolved isotopic compositions, although a restricted asthenospheric addition cannot be discarded in this case. Minor peraluminous granites are spatially associated with the metaluminous sequence, but major highly peraluminous batholiths occur on the eastern flank of the Central Domain. Field relations and geochemical/isotopic evidence indicate that the most obvious source of these crustal melts was the very thick post-early Cambrian metasedimentary sequence comprising the host country rocks. Although asthenospheric mantle was a necessary heat source for lithospheric melting, its material contribution to the growth of Early Paleozoic crust was apparently very minor. Recycling of Mesoproterozoic lithosphere, including the subcontinental mantle, coupled with crustal melting of Early Paleozoic metasedimentary sequences, accounts for most of the Famatinian orogenic magmatism. Consistent results from the Central Andes and East Antarctica confirm that the early stages of the Terra Australis orogen in SW Gondwana were dominated by lithospheric reworking processes.

This work provides new petro-geochemical and isotopic information to constrain the crustal evolution of the Precambrian Cerro La Ventana Formation. The Rb–Sr, Sm–Nd, Pb–Pb, and U–Pb isotopic data obtained as well as their petrological and geochemical features are reported. These data are useful to discuss relationships with equivalent Mesoproterozoic units located along the Cuyania terrane in the proto-Andean Gondwana margin. The type section of the basement rocks of the Cerro La Ventana Formation is located in the south-eastern part of the San Rafael Block, Mendoza Province known as Leones-Ponón Trehué-La Estrechura region. Equivalent crustal fragments are also included in this basement, such as ductile-deformed rocks of the El Nihuil Mafic Unit that are intruded by Ordovician undeformed dolerites. The basement exposed along the type section corresponds to a metamorphosed volcano-plutonic complex with hardly any sedimentary protolith. Main rocks are tonalites and foliated gabbros and quartz diorites that pass to amphibolites, and minor granodioritic–dioritic orthogneisses, with abundant angular microgranitoid enclaves now deformed and stretched intruded in mafic to felsic metavolcanics with porphyritic relic textures. The studied samples classified as tonalites and some close to the field of granodiorites following a calc-alkaline trend. Gabbroic samples from the El Nihuil mafic unit show a more tholeiitic signature. The bulk of samples from the Cerro La Ventana Formation plot within the field of metaluminous rocks; although a few are in the peraluminous field. Main groups of samples plot as low-Al TTD field; however, some of them show high Sr/Y ratios which are typical of high-Al TTD. The Mg#/K ratio is higher in the Cerro La Ventana Formation compared with Las Matras TTG series suggesting a minor differentiated grade for the first one. The chondrite-normalized REE diagrams for Leones samples have Eu anomalies rather positive and gabbros from El Nihuil region display patterns with positive Eu anomalies typical of plagioclase-rich igneous rocks. The Rb–Sr data defined an isochron with 1148 ± 83 Ma, initial 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70292 ± 0.00018. The low initial ratio is indicative of a slight evolved Mesoproterozoic source. An acceptable isochron was obtained using Sm–Nd methodology indicating an age of 1228 ± 63 Ma. The model ages (TDM) are in the range 1.23–1.64 Ga with εNd(1200) in between −0.94 and +4.7 recording a ‘depleted’ source, less evolved than CHUR for the time of crystallization. In a 207Pb/204Pb diagram the samples plot similarly to rocks from the basement of Cuyania Terrane (Pie de Palo Range and crustal xenoliths) showing a distinctive non-radiogenic signature. The tonalitic lithofacies located at the Leones River type section was chosen for zircon U–Pb TIMS dating and the obtained crystallization age was 1214.7 ± 6.5 Ma. The in situ U–Pb (LA-ICP-MS) zircon data done in two different laboratories on samples from El Nihuil mafic unit (tonalitic orthogneisses) plotted in a Concordia diagram, record an intercept at 1256 ± 10 Ma and in Tera-Wasserburg diagram an age of 1222 ± 6.9 Ma. With these isotopic data we confirm the Mesoproterozoic age for the basement of the San Rafael Block. The obtained ca. 1.2 Ga is quite similar to those belonging to the basement of other regions from the Cuyania allochthonous terrane., Centro de Investigaciones Geológicas

The Río Seco de los Castaños Formation (RSC) is one of the ‘pre-Carboniferous units’ outcropping within the San Rafael Block assigned to Upper Silurian–Lower Devonian age. We review the provenance data obtained by petrography and geochemical-isotope analyses as well as the U–Pb detrital zircon ages. Comparison with La Horqueta Formation is also discussed. The main components of this marine fine-grained siliciclastic platform are sandstones and mudstones. The conglomerates are restricted to channel fill deposits developed mainly at the Lomitas Negras location. A low anchizone for the RSC was indicated by illite crystallinity index. From the geochemical proxies described above (Manassero et al. in Devonian Change: Case studies in Palaeogeography and Palaeoecology. Geological Society, 2009) a provenance from an unrecycled crust with an average composition similar to depleted compared with average Upper Continental Crust is suggested. TDM ages are within the range of the Mesoproterozoic basement and Palaeozoic supracrustal rocks of the Precordillera-Cuyania terrane. εNd values of the RSC are similar to those from sedimentary rocks from the Lower Palaeozoic carbonate-siliciclastic platform of the San Rafael Block. These data suggest an Early Carboniferous (Mississipian) low-metamorphic (anchizone) event for the unit. It is correlated with the ‘Chanic’ tectonic phase that affected the Precordillera-Cuyania terrane and also linked to the collision of the Chilenia terrane in the western pre-Andean Gondwana margin. As final remarks we can comment that the studied RSC samples show dominant source derivation from Famatinian (Late Cambrian-Devonian) and Pampean-Brasiliano (Neoproterozoic-Early Cambrian) cycles. One of the ‘pre-Carboniferous units’ from the San Rafael Block is the sedimentary Río Seco de los Castaños Formation, which is distributed in isolated outcrops within the Block. At the Rodeo de la Bordalesa area two small intrusives in the mentioned unit were mapped, composed of tonalitic rocks, lamprophyre (‘spessartite-kersantite’) and aplite dykes.We present in this paper, geochemical and isotopic data from the gray tonalitic rocks with abundant mafic enclaves and late magmatic aplite veins. The country rocks are a folded sequence of feldspathic sandstones, wackes, and shales. The Rodeo de la Bordalesa tonalite dykes are characterized by high to medium potassium concentration, with metaluminous composition and I-type calc-alkaline signature. The 401 ± 4 Ma U–Pb zircon age corresponds to the emplacement time and it is confirmed by the K–Ar biotite age. The Rb–Sr whole rocks and biotite age of 374 ± 4 Ma could be related to deformation during the ‘Chanic’ tectonic phase. Nd model ages (TDM) show an interval between 1 and 1.6 Ga, indicating Mesoproterozoic age derivation, whereas the negative εNd is typical from crustal sources. The crystallization age for the Rodeo de la Bordalesa tonalite corresponds to a Lower Devonian time and suggests that part of the Late Famatinian magmatic event is present in the San Rafael Block. The dykes are contemporaneous with the large peraluminous batholith in Pampeanas Ranges, with the transpressional shear belts during ‘Achalian’ event and could be correlated with the Devonian magmatism present in the southern part of the Frontal Cordillera. The geochemical and geochronological data allow us to differentiate the Rodeo de la Bordalesa tonalite from the mafic rocks exposed at the El Nihuil area. Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

The depositional succession of the Campo Alegre Basin (Santa Catarina - southern Brazil) was investigated having the evolution of the volcanic activity as background. The different stratigraphic units are interpreted as belonging to different volcanic stages: Bateias Formation, conglomerates and sandstones, related with a pre-volcanic stage; Campo Alegre Group, at the main volcanic stage, with each different formation corresponding to different episodes of volcanism - Rio Negrinho Formation, corresponding to the basic volcanism, Avenca Grande Formation to ignimbritic event, Serra de São Miguel Formation to the acid volcanism and Fazenda Uirapuru Formation, related to an explosive event; Rio Turvo and Arroio Água Fria formations correspond respectively to inner and extra-caldera deposits.
