During the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, overseas military bases faced unique challenges to preserve force health protection while simultaneously caring for military beneficiaries. The response to the rapidly evolving challenges surrounding transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in Okinawa, Japan, required innovative solutions. One innovative solution was the COVID-19 Operational Response Cell established at Camp Courtney, Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler. This interview describes the COVID-19 Response Cell operations and essential lessons learned by a Navy Nurse Corps officer working with III Marine Expeditionary Force, a forward-deployed force in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

Introduction Prior research identified possible interstitial pulmonary fluid, concerning for early high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), in a large percentage of trekkers above 3000 m using a comprehensive 28-view pulmonary ultrasound protocol. These trekkers had no clinical symptoms of HAPE despite these ultrasound findings. The more common 4-view lung ultrasound protocol (LUP) is accurate in rapidly detecting interstitial edema during resource-rich care. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the 4-view LUP detects interstitial fluid in trekkers ascending to Everest Base Camp. Methods Serial 4-view LUP was performed on 15 healthy trekkers during a 9-d ascent from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp. Ascent protocols complied with Wilderness Medical Society guidelines for staged ascent. A 4-view LUP was performed in accordance with the published 2012 international consensus protocols on lung ultrasound. Symptom assessment and 4-view LUP were obtained at 6 waypoints along the staged ascent. A 4-view LUP was positive for interstitial edema if ≥3 B-lines were detected in 2 ultrasound windows. Results A single participant had evidence of interstitial lung fluid at 5380 m as defined by the 4-view LUP. There was no evidence of interstitial fluid in any participant below 5380 m. One participant was evacuated for acute altitude sickness at 4000 m but showed no preceding sonographic evidence of interstitial fluid. Conclusions In this small study, sonographic detection of interstitial fluid, suggestive of early HAPE, was not identified by the 4-view LUP protocol.

Discovering and understanding new materials with desired properties are at the heart of materials science research, and machine learning (ML) has recently offered special shortcuts to the ultimate goal. Thanks to the nourishment of computer hardware and computational chemistry, the development of calculated scientific data repositories could fuel the ML models to investigate the vast materials space. At this moment, understanding this revolutionary paradigm is urgent, and this Review aims to deliver comprehensive information about the collaboration of ML with materials science. This Review summarizes recent achievements in catalysts design, which can be benefitted from ML because of the complex nature of catalytic reactions and vast candidate materials space. ML models for catalyst design could be transferred to applications in other domains and vice versa. The basic concepts of ML algorithms and practical guides to materials scientists are also demonstrated. Moreover, challenges and strategies of applying ML are discussed, which should be addressed collaboratively between materials scientists and ML communities. Ultimate integrations of ML in materials science are expected to accelerate the design, discovery, optimization, and interpretation of materials in both industry and academia, and this Review hopes to be the informative base camp for that journey.

La estrecha relación espacial y arqueológica del complejo de campamentos de Renieblas con la circumvallatio escipiónica de Numancia ha generado no poca controversia a lo largo de más de un siglo, derivada de la ausencia de estratigrafías. En el presente trabajo se apunta la posibilidad de que el antiguo Campamento III de la Gran Atalaya de Renieblas, atribuido por Schulten a la campaña de Nobilior de 153-152 a. C., fuera reocupado por Escipión Emiliano como campamento base en la campaña final contra la capital arévaca en el 134-133 a. C. La consideración y comparación de las defensas y estructuras interiores de Renieblas III y su anexo, así como la presencia de algunos materiales, especialmente los numismáticos, vienen a reforzar esta reocupación escipiónica. Esto nos lleva a plantear la hipótesis de que estaríamos ante un campamento legionario bifásico. Por otra parte, la observación a través del análisis de los datos LiDAR nos ha permitido completar el trazado del mencionado anexo del Campamento III por el suroeste.

Archaeological collections are foundational to the discipline. Yet, researchers who study curated assemblages can face challenges. Here, we show how experimental archaeology can play a vital role in the interpretation of old archaeological collections. The Welling site, in Coshocton County, Ohio, is a multicomponent, stratified site with a substantial Clovis component in its lower levels. Using experimental flaked stone replication, we create an analog model of a “pure” Clovis bifacial debitage assemblage, as might be found at a lithic workshop. We predicted that if the Welling Clovis debitage assemblage was representative of a lithic workshop, then it would be similar to the experimental model. If the debitage assemblage was representative of a base camp, however, then it would be significantly different from the model because Clovis people would have been using, transporting, resharpening, rejuvenating, and recycling the debitage—all activities that would modify a “pure” Clovis bifacial debitage assemblage. Our statistical analyses supported the latter prediction. Overall, our study illustrates how productive the integration of experimental and archaeological data can be, and it emphasizes how important the curation and accessibility of both archaeological and experimental collections are to the discipline.

The human spleen can contract and transiently boost the blood with stored erythrocytes. We measured spleen volume and contraction during apneas in two groups, each containing 12 Caucasian participants (each 3 women): one group planning to summit Mt. Everest (8848 m; "Climbers") and another trekking to Everest Base Camp (5300 m; "Trekkers"). Tests were done in Kathmandu (1370 m) 1-3 days after arrival, before the Climb/Trek. Age, height, weight, vital capacity, resting heart rate, and arterial oxygen saturation were similar between groups (not significant). After 15 minutes of sitting rest, all participants performed a 1-minute apnea and, after 2 minutes of rest, 1 maximal duration apnea was performed. Six of the climbers did a third apnea and hemoglobin concentration (Hb) was measured. Three axial spleen diameters were measured by ultrasonic imaging before and after the apneas for spleen volume calculation. Present paper is based on the findings of major research project “Tribal life in base camp and structural change.” Researcher has been try to find out what are the factor responsible for migration of large number of tribal people from native places to nearby the district and block head quarters. The study is focused on impact of migration on tribal marriage and family in base camp. A comparative study of social life of tribal people before coming in base camps and changes after boarding in base camps. The findings of the study show that due to naxal movement and residing in the base camp tribal marriage, family and kinship system is highly affected.

Objective: The California Emergency Medical Services Authority manages and deploys California Medical Assistance Teams (CAL-MAT) to disaster medical incidents in the state. This analysis reviews diagnoses for ambulatory medical visits at multiple wildland fire incident base camp field sites in California during the 2020 fire season. Methods: Clinical data without personal health information were extracted retrospectively from patient care records from all patients seen by a provider. Results were entered into Excel spreadsheets with calculation of summary statistics. Results: During the 2020 fire season, CAL-MAT teams deployed 21 times for a total of 327 days to base camps supporting large fire incidents and cared for 1756 patients. Impacts of heat and environmental smoke are a constant factor near wildfires; however, our most common medical problem was rhus dermatitis (54.5%) due to poison oak. All 2020 medical missions were further complicated by prevention and management of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Conclusions: There is very little literature regarding the acute medical needs facing responders fighting wildland fires. Ninety-five percent of clinical conditions presenting to a field medical team at the wildfire incident base camp during a severe fire season in California can be managed by small teams operating in field tents.

The Common Habitat uses the SLS Core Stage Liquid Oxygen tank as the primary structure (similar to Skylab) and has an internal architecture compatible with microgravity, lunar gravity, and Mars gravity, such that identical versions of the same design can be used in all three environments. Applying the large dimensions and eight-person crew size of the Common Habitat to a surface architecture leads to a unique base camp configuration. A notional such base camp is described in this analysis. The base camp includes four distributed zones – habitation, landing, power, and resource production. The base camp is deployed and assembled in three phases: site preparation, element staging, and habitat delivery, each of which are briefly discussed. Crew arrival and departure is discussed, including variations caused by orbital mechanics-induced differences between the Moon and Mars base camps. Trash and logistics operations are described. Finally, crew operations within the base camp are described.
