Lymphangioma is a congenital lesion of childhood. They usually present in head and neck region. Intra-abdominal lymphangioma in an adult is a rare lesion which poses diagnostic difficulty. Although asymptomatic, they may present with an acute abdomen. Here, we report a rare case of huge asymptomatic retro-peritoneal lymphangioma who underwent complete surgical excision with an uneventful postoperative period.

Bio-jarosite, an iron mineral synthesized biologically using bacteria, is a substitute for iron catalysts in the Fenton oxidation of organic pollutants. Iron nanocatalysts have been widely used as Fenton catalysts because they have a larger surface area than ordinary catalysts, are highly recyclable, and can be treated efficiently. This study aimed to explore the catalytic properties of bio-jarosite iron nanoparticles synthesized with green methods using two distinct plant species: Azadirachta indica and Eucalyptus gunni. The focus was on the degradation of dicamba via Fenton oxidation. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited different particle size, shape, surface area, and chemical composition characteristics. Both particles were effective in removing dicamba, with removal efficiencies of 96.8% for A. indica bio-jarosite iron nanoparticles (ABFeNPs) and 93.0% for E. gunni bio-jarosite iron nanoparticles (EBFeNPs) within 120 min of treatment. Increasing the catalyst dosage by 0.1 g/L resulted in 7.6% and 43.0% increases in the dicamba removal efficiency for EBFeNPs and ABFeNPs with rate constants of 0.025 min−1 and 0.023 min−1, respectively, confirming their catalytic roles. Additionally, the high efficiency of both catalysts was demonstrated through five consecutive cycles of linear pseudo-first-order Fenton oxidation reactions.

Introduction: This study investigated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions from road traffic at the Surathkal toll plaza, in Karnataka, India. It focuses on two phases: when the toll station operated (Phase 1: January 2020 – March 2020) and when it was inactive (Phase 2: January 2023 – March 2023). Materials and methods: The research examines Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentration, its elemental analysis, and various PAH concentrations in it during both phases. Ultrasonic extraction and Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis were used to study 16 priority PAHs recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA), identifying eight in samples like SPM, soot, and green leaves. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICPOES) analysed 14 elements in SPM. Results: Results revealed higher PAH concentration during Phase 2, indicating that the presence of toll structure negatively affects air quality even when inactive. In contrast, SPM and its elements had higher mean concentrations during Phase 1, suggesting an inverse relationship between SPM and PAH levels. PAH diagnostic ratios showed different sources for each phase, including gasoline, diesel, fossil fuel, coal/biomass, and pyrogenic sources. Comprehensive health risk assessment using BaP equivalent concentration (BaPeq) to estimate Inhalation Life-time Cancer Risk (ILCR), revealed an increased risk during both phases (0.045 during Phase 1 and 0.134 during Phase 2), higher than acceptable risk level (1×10-6). Conclusion: This research underscores the toll plaza's significant influence on air quality and calls for the development of mitigation measures.

Climate change in India is likely to aggravate the heat stress in dairy animals due to rise in temperature coupled with increased precipitation. In animals heat stress affects the alteration of plasma Potassium (K (+)) and Sodium Na (+) ions. ATP1A1 gene belongs to the family of P-type cation transport ATPases, and to the subfamily of Na+/K+ -ATPases. Na+/K+ -ATPase is an integral membrane protein responsible for establishing and maintaining the electrochemical gradients of Na+ and K+ ions across the plasma membrane. The present study is aimed to investigate the polymorphisms in the entire coding region of ATP1A1 gene in Bos indicus (Deoni) cattle by PCR-Single-Strand Conformation Polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and direct sequencing of variants. Sequence analysis showed 16 SNPs, of which 5 SNPs were in the coding region and the remaining 11 SNPs were detected in the non-coding region of ATP1A1 gene. All the observed variations in the coding regions of ATP1A1 gene were silent mutations. The genotypic, allelic frequencies, χ² test for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and Shannon's information index were calculated using POPGENE-32. The study revealed a high degree of genetic variability in ATP1A1 gene in the Deoni cattle population which indicated the utility of this gene for further studies for identification of markers associated with heat tolerance in Indian humped cattle for using in marker assisted selection for heat tolerance. Abstract In the present study, sequential anaerobic–aerobic treatment was used for the enhanced degradation of selected nitrophenols. Five identical reactors were used to assess the degradation of 2-nitrophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol. Reactor 1 was used as control, and another four reactors were operated in anaerobic phase followed by sequential aerobic treatment. The performance of reactors was studied for nitrophenol concentrations of 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/l and in next phase effect of redox mediators [lawsone and anthraquinone sulphonic acid (AQSA)], along with kinetics of degradation studied for 40 mg/l of nitrophenols. More than 98% degradation of nitrophenols was achieved at lower concentrations but for 40 mg/l removal percentage was reduced, and also COD inhibition was observed. However, with the addition of redox mediators, both nitrophenols and COD removal percentage were greater than 95% and 85%, respectively. Kinetics of degradation revealed that the rate of degradation was found to increase with the increase in concentration of redox mediators from 10 to 20 mg/l, and it was found that degradation was faster with the use of AQSA in comparison with lawsone solution. It indicates that use of redox mediators is favourable for the enhanced degradation of nitrophenols. Sequential anaerobic–aerobic treatment is possible potential treatment method for treating nitrophenolic wastewaters.

A novel isolated strain Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans BMSNITK17 has been investigated for its bioleaching potential from lateritic soil and the results are presented. System conditions like pH, feed mineral particle size, pulp density, temperature, rotor speed influences bioleaching potential of Acidithiobcillus ferrooxidans BMSNITK17 in leaching out iron from laterite soil. Effect of sulfate addition on bioleaching efficiency is studied. The bioleached laterite iron (BLFe's) on evaluation for its catalytic role in Fenton's oxidation for the degradation of ametryn and dicamba exhibits 94.24% of ametryn degradation and 92.45% of dicamba degradation efficiency. Fenton's oxidation performed well with the acidic pH 3. The study confirms the role of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in leaching iron from lateritic ore and the usage of bioleached lateritic iron as catalyst in the Fenton's Oxidation.

Background: Thyroid abnormalities are common in chronic heart failure. Severity of heart failure rises by several fold in patients with thyroid dysfunction. Objectives: The purpose of this prospective study is to determine the correlation between low T3 syndrome and chronic heart failure with 2D echocardiography features & predicting the severity of chronic heart failure. Methods: In this descriptive, prospective cross sectional study, all patients who presented to the department of medicine with chronic heart failure during this study period of 12 months from January 2010-December 2011 in K.R.Hospital, Mysore were included. Patients were grouped into Low T3 chronic heart failure, hypothyroid chronic heart failure and chronic heart failure. Results: Mean age of low T3 chronic heart failure patients was higher than other two groups [60.50±6.15(SD) years, Systolic dysfunction on 2D Echo was more in low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy (20%), Diastolic dysfunction on 2D Echo was more in low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy group (30%), Pericardial effusion was seen in more number of patients with low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy (10%).Global hypokinesia was seen in more number of patients with low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy (30%).Segmental hypokinesia was seen in more number of patients with low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy (3%). Mean ejection fraction was seen in more number of patients with low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy [36.78±5.08 (SD)%]. Mean ejection fraction was lower in low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy [34.8±3.293 (SD) %].The high pulmonary artery systolic pressure was seen in more number of patients in low T3 dilated cardiomyopathy (70%).Conclusion: There is significant percentage of chronic heart failure patients having low T3 alone as biochemical parameter. Abstract In this study Fenton’s oxidation of dicamba in aqueous medium was investigated by using the response surface methodology. The influence of H2O2/COD (A), H2O2/Fe2+ (B), pH (C) and reaction time (D) as independent variables were studied on two responses (COD and dicamba removal efficiency). The dosage of H2O2 (5.35–17.4 mM) and Fe2+ (0.09–2.13 mM) were varied and optimum percentage removal of dicamba of 84.01% with H2O2 and Fe2+ dosage of 11.38 and 0.33 mM respectively. The whole oxidation process was monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) along with liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). It was found that 82% of dicamba was mineralized to oxalic acid, chloride ion, CO2 and H2O, which was confirmed with COD removal of 81.53%. The regression analysis was performed, in which standard deviation (2.74), coefficient of correlation (R 2 = $$R_{\text{adj}}^{2}$$ R adj 2 ) and adequate precision (>12) were in good agreement with model values. Finally, the treatment process was validated by performing the additional experiments.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for the most cases of dementia. AD affects more than 25 million people globally and is predicted to affect nearly one in 85 people worldwide by 2050. AD is characterized by the accumulation of dense plaques of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau that cause impairment in memory, cognition, and daily activities. Although early-onset AD has been linked to several mutations, reliable genetic markers for late-onset AD are lacking. Further, the diagnosis of AD biomarkers has its limitations and cannot detect early-stage AD. The identification of accurate, early, and non-invasive biomarkers for AD is, therefore, an unmet challenge. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as a novel class of gene regulatory elements with conserved roles in development and disease. Recent discoveries have uncovered roles of miRNAs in several model organisms during aging and have identified potential miRNAs biomarkers of AD. Here we will discuss this emerging field of miRNAs associated with AD and prospects for the future.

The identification of genetic polymorphisms in the genes that play a crucial role in regulatiing growth and development of livestock enables us to evaluate the biological similarities and to acquire a better perspective of quantitative traits. The present study was undertaken to characterize genetic variability in the bovine growth hormone receptor (GHR), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) genes among Bos indicus (Malnad Gidda, Khillar), Bos taurus (Holstein Friesian, Jersey) cattle and Asian water buffalo Bubalus bubalis (Murrah, Surti) using polymerase chain reactionsingle strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis. These polymorphisms were confirmed by direct sequencing. The comparative gene sequence analysis in cattle and buffalo breeds revealed 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across different loci. Eight SNPs were detected in the bovine growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene, of which four were found in the promoter region and four in the exon 4 region. In the IGF-1 gene, two SNPs were observed in the 5'UTR, three SNPs in the intron 3 region and two SNPs in the coding region of exon 4. Three SNPs were detected in the exon 2 region of the bovine IGFBP-3 gene. The frequency of rare alleles observed in the present study ranged from 0.04 to 0.16. The present results revealed high levels of genetic variability in the GHR, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 genes in cattle and buffalo reared in India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lactoferrin, a glycoprotein, is an important antimicrobial molecule present in milk which plays a vital role in antimicrobial defence of the udder in bovines. In the present investigation, polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) studies were carried out in 122 Deoni (Bos indicus) cows to detect SNPs of lactoferrin gene and to analyze the association between the observed polymorphisms with milk lactoferrin content and Somatic Cell Count (SCC). The PCR-SSCP analysis revealed a total of 20 different variants in the entire coding regions of the lactoferrin gene. Analysis of exons 2, 6 and 8 of lactoferrin gene revealed 4, 3 and 5 unique SSCP patterns, respectively. The PCR-SSCP analysis of exons 3, 9, 14 and 15 revealed two unique SSCP patterns. Comparison of nucleotide sequences of lactoferrin gene of the Deoni cows with taurine cattle revealed a total of 39 point mutations, 25 of which were found to be in coding region. Conceptualized translation of nucleotide sequence revealed 15 amino acid changes. The SSCP variants of exons 2 and 6 had significant (P<0.05) effect on milk SCC. The SSCP variants of exon 3 and exon 15 showed significant effect on lactoferrin content. The SCC and lactoferrin content in Deoni cows was highest in 4th and above parity group. Somatic Cell Count was lowest in early stage of lactation. Parity was found to have highly significant (P<0.01) effect on both milk SCC and lactoferrin content. The observed association between SSCP variants in lactoferrin gene with milk SCC, and milk lactoferrin content suggests the possibility of using these genetic variants in lactoferrin gene as prognostic markers for selection of animals for high lactoferrin content, low SCC and mastitis resistance. Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, there is a lack of comprehensive data from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) regarding factors influencing COPD outcomes, particularly in regions where biomass exposure is prevalent., Objective: The Factors Affecting Survival in Severe and Very Severe COPD Patients Admitted to Tertiary Centers of India (FAST) study aims to address this gap by evaluating factors impacting survival and exacerbation rates among COPD patients in LMICs like India, with a specific focus on biomass exposure, clinical phenotypes, and nutritional status in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)., Methods: The FAST study is an observational cohort study conducted in university teaching hospitals across India. The study aims to enroll 1000 COPD patients admitted to the ICU meeting specific inclusion criteria, with follow-up assessments conducted every 6 months over a 2-year period. Data collection includes demographic information, clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations, pulmonary function tests, medications, nutritional status, mental health, and health-related quality of life. Adjudication of exacerbations and mortality will also be undertaken. The FAST study seeks to provide crucial insights into COPD outcomes in LMICs, informing more precise management strategies and mitigating the burden of COPD in these settings. Background: The combination of the coronally positioned flap with connective tissue grafting in treating gingival recession defects has been shown to demonstrate the highest success rate., Aim: The aim of the present study was to compare and evaluate the efficiency between autologous fibrin glue (AFG) and conventional absorbable sutures in the treatment of marginal tissue recessions using connective tissue grafts (CTGs) and the coronally advanced flap (CAF) technique., Methods: Twenty Miller's class I and II recession sites in maxillary or mandibular areas in chronic periodontitis patients were treated as group I (test): CTG + CAF + AFG; and group II (control): CTG + CAF with conventional absorbable sutures. Clinical parameters in both groups were recorded at baseline (t0) and six months (t1) postoperatively in terms of gingival recession height (RH), root coverage esthetic score (RCES), visual analogue scale (VAS), and healing index (HI)., Results: The RH, RCES, VAS, and HI were significantly reduced at the end of six months compared to baseline ( P < 0.005) in both groups; however, there was no statistical difference between the groups, indicating the equivalent efficacy of AFG and conventional sutures in healing., Conclusion: All the treated sites were found to have appreciable root coverage with satisfactory post-operative healing. Introduction: Despite all the advances, the mortality rate of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) ranges from 30% to 60% for isolated CDH and as high as 89% when they are associated with additional structural or chromosomal anomalies. Hence, a study was conducted to evaluate the factors contributing to the mortality of neonates treated for CDH or the eventration of diaphragm., Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in the department of paediatric surgery at a tertiary centre. The neonates admitted with a diagnosis of CDH or eventration requiring surgery, between March 2013 and March 2021, were included in the study., Results: A total of 123 neonates were included in the study. The variables, earlier median age at presentation (1 [1-23] vs. 3 [1-28]; P < 0.001; Mann-Whitney U-test), preterm birth (10/79 vs. 0/44; P = 0.01; Fischer's exact test), inborn (68/79 vs. 27/44; P = 0.002; Chi-square test), weight ≤2 kg (18/79 vs. 1/44; P = 0.003; Chi-square test), central cyanosis at presentation (21/79 vs. 1/44; P < 0.001; Chi-square test), antenatal detection (47/79 vs. 14/44; P = 0.003; Chi-square test) and earlier mean age at surgery (3.66 ± 1.47 vs. 7.66 ± 6.88; P < 0.001; Independent sample t-test) were associated with increased mortality. On multinominal logistic regression analysis, the factors preterm (odd's Ratio [OR] =4.735; P = 0.03), weight ≤2 kg (OR = 5.081; P = 0.02), central cyanosis at presentation (OR = 6.969; P = 0.008) and antenatal detection (OR = 7.471; P = 0.006) were found to be independently associated with increased mortality in CDH/eventration., Conclusion: The factors: prematurity, weight <2 kg, cyanosis at presentation and antenatal diagnosis were independently associated with increased mortality in neonates with CDH/eventration requiring surgery.
