Abstract

The bottom water conditions in the Central South Pacific (CSP) and associated changes in the Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) under warmer-than-present conditions need to be better understood. These water masses transfer their properties to the major ocean basins. We analyzed Late Miocene to Early Pliocene (5.6–3.6 Ma) marine sediment core sections from the CSP for benthic foraminifera, ice rafted debris (IRD), Ostracoda, planktic foraminifera Orbulina universa abundance, and organic geochemical proxies to assess the bottom water characteristics under warmer-than-present day conditions. A significant increase in IRD abundance between 5.3 and 4.9 Ma marks the Early Pliocene warm phase. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate shifts in bottom water conditions over time in the CSP region. Between 5.6 and 5.3 Ma, predominantly oxygenated bottom water with moderate organic matter flux prevailed. This shifted to suboxic conditions with increased organic matter flux from 5.3 to 4.9 Ma. Subsequently, between 4.9 and 4.4 Ma, bottom water conditions alternated frequently between oxic and suboxic states. Enhanced bottom water formation and inflow of LCDW and AABW in the CSP during 4.4–4.0 Ma promoted oxygenated conditions, accompanied by low organic export flux. However, sluggish bottom water circulation from 4.0 to 3.6 Ma reverted to suboxic conditions, associated with increased carbon burial. Notably, productivity peaked intermittently between 5.3 and 3.6 Ma, as indicated by the occurrence of suboxic species assemblages and increase in the abundance of Orbulina universa, benthic microfauna (ostracods), and other paleoproductivity indicators.

Abstract

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) represents the world’s largest ocean-current system and affects global ocean circulation, climate and Antarctic ice-sheet stability1–3. Today, ACC dynamics are controlled by atmospheric forcing, oceanic density gradients and eddy activity4. Whereas palaeoceanographic reconstructions exhibit regional heterogeneity in ACC position and strength over Pleistocene glacial–interglacial cycles5–8, the long-term evolution of the ACC is poorly known. Here we document changes in ACC strength from sediment cores in the Pacific Southern Ocean. We find no linear long-term trend in ACC flow since 5.3 million years ago (Ma), in contrast to global cooling9 and increasing global ice volume10. Instead, we observe a reversal on a million-year timescale, from increasing ACC strength during Pliocene global cooling to a subsequent decrease with further Early Pleistocene cooling. This shift in the ACC regime coincided with a Southern Ocean reconfiguration that altered the sensitivity of the ACC to atmospheric and oceanic forcings11–13. We find ACC strength changes to be closely linked to 400,000-year eccentricity cycles, probably originating from modulation of precessional changes in the South Pacific jet stream linked to tropical Pacific temperature variability14. A persistent link between weaker ACC flow, equatorward-shifted opal deposition and reduced atmospheric CO2 during glacial periods first emerged during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT). The strongest ACC flow occurred during warmer-than-present intervals of the Plio-Pleistocene, providing evidence of potentially increasing ACC flow with future climate warming.

Abstract

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), the world’s strongest zonal current system, connects all three major ocean basins of the global ocean and therefore integrates and responds to global climate variability. Its flow is largely driven by strong westerly winds and is constricted to its narrowest extent in the Drake Passage. Fresh and cold Pacific surface and intermediate water flowing through the Drake Passage (cold-water route) and warm Indian Ocean water masses flowing through the Agulhas region (warm-water route) are critical for the South Atlantic contribution to Meridional Overturning Circulation changes. Furthermore, physical and biological processes associated with the ACC affect the strength of the ocean carbon pump and therefore are critical to feedbacks linking atmospheric CO2 concentrations, ocean circulation, and climate/cryosphere on a global scale. In contrast to the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the ACC, and with the exception of drill cores from the Antarctic continental margin and off New Zealand, there are no deep-sea drilling paleoceanographic records from the Pacific sector of the ACC. To advance our understanding of Miocene to Holocene atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere dynamics in the Pacific and their implications for regional and global climate and atmospheric CO2, International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 383 recovered sedimentary sequences at (1) three sites in the central South Pacific (CSP) (U1539, U1540, and U1541), (2) two sites at the Chilean margin (U1542 and U1544), and (3) one site from the pelagic eastern South Pacific (U1543) close to the entrance to the Drake Passage. Because of persistently stormy conditions and the resulting bad weather avoidance, we were not successful in recovering the originally planned Proposed Site CSP-3A in the Polar Frontal Zone of the CSP. Abstract

The global overturning ocean circulation plays a key role in global climate by distributing heat around the Earth and by triggering or amplifying major climate changes. Neodymium (Nd) isotopes are widely used to trace present-day and past ocean circulation changes; however, their value as a circulation tracer has been increasingly challenged by studies that have focused on processes that can modify seawater Nd isotope ratios (for example, seawater interaction with particles, pore water fluxes from sediments). Abstract

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is the world’s strongest zonal current system that connects all three major ocean basins of the global ocean and therefore integrates and responds to global climate variability. Its flow is largely driven by strong westerly winds and constricted to its narrowest extent in the Drake Passage. Transport of fresh and cold surface and intermediate water masses through the Drake Passage (cold-water route) strongly affects the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation together with the inflow of Indian Ocean water masses (warm-water route). Both oceanographic corridors are critical for the South Atlantic contribution to Meridional Overturning Circulation changes. In contrast to the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the ACC, and with the exception of drill cores from the Antarctic continental margin and off New Zealand, the Pacific sector of the ACC lacks information on its Cenozoic paleoceanography from deep-sea drilling records. To advance our knowledge and understanding of Miocene to Holocene atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere dynamics in the Pacific and their implications for regional and global climate and atmospheric CO2, International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 383 recovered sedimentary sequences at (1) three sites located in the central South Pacific (U1539, U1540, and U1541), (2) two sites at the Chile margin (U1542 and U1544), and (3) one site from the pelagic eastern South Pacific (U1543) close to the entrance to the Drake Passage. Because of persistently stormy conditions and the resulting bad weather avoidance, we were not successful in recovering the originally planned Proposed Site CSP-3A in the central South Pacific in the Polar Frontal Zone. The drilled sediments at Sites U1541 and U1543 reach back to the late Miocene, and those at Site U1540 reach back to the early Pliocene. High sedimentary rate Pleistocene sedimentary sequences were drilled both in the central South Pacific (Site U1539) and along the Chile margin. Taken together, the sites represent a depth transect from ~1100 m at the Chile margin site (U1542) to ~4070 m in the central South Pacific (Site U1539) and allow investigation of changes in the vertical structure of the ACC, a key issue for understanding the role of the Southern Ocean in the global carbon cycle. The sites are located at latitudes and water depths where sediments will allow the application of a wide range of siliciclastic-, carbonate-, and opal-based proxies to address our objectives of reconstructing with unprecedented stratigraphic detail surface to deep-ocean variations and their relation to atmosphere and cryosphere changes through stadial to interstadial, glacial to interglacial, and warmer than present time intervals.

19. Structure and stability of δ-UZr2 phase in U-50 wt% Zr alloy.

Abstract

Thermodynamic stability of the hexagonal delta phase has been discussed for the U-50 wt% Zr alloy composition based on the XRD, FESEM, and EDS results, further corroborated by the ab-initio calculations. It has been shown that U-50 wt% Zr composition falls into a two-phase region in the U–Zr phase diagram at about 573 K, in contradiction to the published phase diagram. Crystallographic structure of the delta phase in terms of the atomic occupation has been elucidated using the near-neighbour analysis obtained from the EXAFS results. It is shown here that the (111) plane collapse mechanism of the parent bcc phase is not complete in the delta phase even after the sample was aged for 864 ks (240 h) at 573 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High iron impurity affects the castability and the tensile properties of the recycled Al-Si alloys due to the presence of the Fe containing intermetallic β-Al9Fe2Si2 phase. To date only Mn addition is known to transform the β-Al9Fe2Si2 phase in the Al-Si-Fe system. However, for the first time, as reported here, it is shown that β-phase transforms to the ω-Al7Cu2Fe phase in the presence of Cu, after solutionization at 793K. The ω-phase decomposes below 673K resulting into the formation of θ-Al2Cu phase. However, the present thermodynamic description of the Al-Si-Fe-Cu system needs finer tuning to accurately predict the stability of the ω-phase in these alloys. In the present study, an attempt was made to enhance the strength of Al-6wt%Si-2wt%Fe model recycled cast alloy with different amount of Cu addition. Microstructural and XRD analysis were carried out in detail to show the influence of Cu and the stability range of the ω-phase. Tensile properties and micro-hardness values are also reported for both as-cast and solutionized alloys with different amount of Cu without and with ageing treatment at 473K. The increase in strength due to addition of Cu, in Fe-rich AlSi alloys is promising from the alloy recyclability point of view. One of the key activities during the initial phase of the international GEOTRACES program was an extensive international intercalibration effort, to ensure that results for a range of trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) from different cruises and from different laboratories can be compared in a meaningful way. Here we present the results from the intercalibration efforts on neodymium isotopes and rare earth elements in seawater and marine particles. Fifteen different laboratories reported results for dissolved 143Nd/144Nd ratios in seawater at three different locations (BATS 15 m, BATS 2000 m, SAFe 3000 m), with an overall agreement within 47 to 57 ppm (2σ standard deviation of the mean). A similar agreement was found for analyses of an unknown pure Nd standard solution carried out by 13 laboratories (56 ppm), indicating that mass spectrometry is the main variable in achieving accurate and precise Nd isotope ratios. Overall, this result is very satisfactory, as the achieved precision is a factor of 40 better than the range of Nd isotopic compositions observed in the global ocean. Intercalibration for dissolved rare earth element concentrations (REEs) by six laboratories for two water depths at BATS yielded a reproducibility of 15% or better for all REE except Ce, which seems to be the most blank-sensitive REE. Neodymium concentrations from 12 laboratories show an agreement within 9%, reflecting the best currently possible reproducibility. Ternary copper-nickel-tin (CuNiSn) alloy shows spinodal decomposition by controlled heat treatment. Mixing of Tin(Sn) in very low quantity in Copper Nickel alloy gives rise to spinodal decomposition at moderate temperature and very less time. To detect the two separate phases in spinodal decomposition, Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurement is used. Abstract

The transformation mechanism of hexagonal delta phase from the disordered bcc gamma phase has not been reported before in the Zr-rich U-Zr alloy system. With the help of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM analyses it was shown that the gamma to delta conversion takes place by the lattice collapse mechanism of omega transformation. It was also ascertained that a higher aging temperature or time promotes the growth of all four variants of the delta phase within a parent gamma grain. In addition, ab initio electronic structure calculations showed that the bcc to hexagonal transformation, involving partial ordering of the parent bcc phase followed by (111) plane collapse, is energetically favorable. Abstract

In this study, we investigated the effect of Cu on growth, pigment content, lipid peroxidation, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant activity in leaves of Cu-tolerant Hirschfeldia incana (L.) and determined Cu contents in its leaves and roots. The plants grown on sand cultures containing various Cu concentrations (100, 250 and 400 μg g-1 Cu by DW medium) did not show apparent toxicity symptoms. The leaf fresh weight increased while the dry weight decreased with increasing Cu levels in the media. Cu contents of roots and leaves were also increased but significant decreases in the total chlorophyll content were observed with 100 and 250 μg g-1 Cu-treated plants; however, it was increased significantly at 400 μg g-1 Cu initial level in culture media. The carotenoid content did not vary in all Cu treatments. The lipid peroxidation was measured as MDA content (malondialdehyde). The MDA content in-creased significantly at 250 and 400 μg g-1 Cu. The analysis of the antioxidative enzymes activity indicated that APX was the most active enzyme in the leaves of H. incana. The CAT activity was increased significantly at 250 μg g-1, and it decreased quickly at 400 μg g-1. Any significant changes did not occur with respect to SOD and GPOD activities. Non-protein thiols, ascorbate and dehydroascorbate as well as proline content were increased significantly at 250 and 400 μg g-1 Cu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of ZnO addition on structural properties of 45S5 glass. The glasses with nominal composition 45SiO2-(24.5-x) CaO-24.5 Na2O-6 P2O5-x ZnO (x= 0-15 wt.%) are prepared by meltquench technique and characterized for thermo-physical properties using DTA and micro-hardness measurements. Glass transition and peak crystallization temperature decrease with an increase of ZnO content, which implies the weakening of glass network and increased tendency of glasses towards crystallization.
