This paper aims to conceptualise and operationalise an Employability Capital Growth Model (ECGM) via a systematic literature review of 42,558 manuscripts from Web of Science and Scopus databases published between 2016 and 2022 from the fields of graduate employability and career development incorporating applied psychology, business, education, and management. Two research questions are addressed. (1) How can literature addressing various forms of capital in the context of preparing university graduates for the labour market be integrated to offer a new ECGM? (2) How can various actors, i.e. (a) students and graduates, (b) educators, (c) careers and employability professionals, and (d) graduate employers, operationalise the ECGM? The systematic literature review resulted in a final corpus of 94 manuscripts for qualitative content analysis. Findings led to the construction of a new ECGM comprising nine forms of employability capital (social capital, cultural capital, psychological capital, personal identity capital, health capital, scholastic capital, market-value capital, career identity capital, and economic capital), external factors, and personal outcomes. Twenty-three opportunities for the operationalisation of the ECGM were also identified. The theoretical and conceptual contribution comes from constructing a new ECGM to bridge the fields of graduate employability and career development in the context of preparing individuals for the transition from university into the labour market. The practical contribution comes from operationalising the ECGM at the education-employment nexus. Consequently, developing various forms of capital and an awareness of external factors and personal outcomes can improve students' and graduates' employability, benefitting all actors operating in a career ecosystem. A stylised fact in bibliometric research is that in the field of management studies, half or more of the papers published are never cited. If true, this implies that efforts and resources are considerably wasted because half of the academic work is not considered worthy by the same community that developed them. We studied a sample of 2777 papers published in 20 journals and representing different levels of quality. Of these, only 191 papers, representing 6.5% of the sample, were never cited, suggesting that the aforementioned stylised fact is a myth. We identified the factors that contribute to the level of citations, including the ranking of the journal in the quality list, time since last citation, and number of authors. Drawing on learning and generational theory, we investigate the effect of socio-economic and contextual conditions on managerial learning and organizational development. Using data from 3657 managers across 20 countries, we untangle the interactive effect of national culture and generational cohort on learning goal orientation (LGO). Managers from younger generations (e.g. generation X) had a stronger LGO than those in older generations (e.g. Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1959). Performance orientation (PO) moderated the relationships so that the gap was stronger in high PO cultures. A validation of a model using hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) supports a cross-level moderation model of PO on LGO. Our study provides important first evidence of the value of the multilevel analysis to understanding LGO in different groups of managers, improving scholarly capacity to understand the multilevel and cross-level effects that govern the workplace. It also supports cross-level studies for the development of global managers from different generational groups. We extend LGO research by identifying the contextual influence and how this impacts on the behaviour of managers across different societal 'structures' (e.g. generations) and societies (e.g. cultures). The purpose of this paper is to find out what academics do when approaching retirement, and why; as well as to reflect on the process and consequences of reaching a retirement decision – for themselves, the university system, and the wider community. Our study concentrates on baby boomers, as this large cohort starts to retire or become eligible to do so. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in an interpretive paradigm, data collection took place during 2017–2018 using semi-structured interviews with 45 Social Science Business School academics who have worked in Anglo-Saxon and Latin European universities (the USA, the UK, Spain and France). The findings suggest four core clusters of late career trajectories, with the majority wishing, and planning, to continue work. This study focuses on the undergraduate self-perception of employability. We aimed to explore the impact of human capital, which incorporates social capital, cultural capital, psychological capital, scholastic capital, market-value capital, and skills. We also examined the role of careers advice and career ownership (protean career). Additionally, moderators of gender, degree subject, and year of study offer further contribution. Running a two-wave study (Model I) and a cross-sectional study (Model II) of undergraduates at a UK university, our findings draw on 387 students. Findings indicate that human capital, careers advice, and career ownership are important components of self-perceived employability. The study advances human capital theory and contemporary career theory at the transition from higher education into the labour market. Through advancing understanding of the undergraduate self-perception of employability, all stakeholders may benefit, via better-informed strategies for preparing, attracting, hiring, and retaining graduates. This paper examines a hitherto neglected detail of organizational life - the lunch break, a daily event, which bears important implications for organizations and their people. We propose a theoretical framework for understanding differences in lunch break practice based on an anthropological theory of comparative cultures, and contextualize it in current management discourse. A national representative survey of organizational lunch practices in one country, the UK, is presented. We explore examples that demonstrate the utility of the lunch break for identity formation, the management of people at work and change management. Abstract: Background: Schizophrenia is one of the disorders in which suicide attempts and death by suicide are pronounced. However, there is paucity of data regarding suicide attempts by schizophrenia patients. The aim of the present study was to characterize a large sample of schizophrenia patients in tertiary care who had attempted suicide. Method: Over a 15-year period all computerized records of admissions of adult schizophrenia patients were examined. Patients who had attempted suicide were defined as the index group and the comparison group was comprised of the next admission of a patient suffering from schizophrenia who did not attempt suicide prior to hospitalization. Results: There were 10,006 admissions of patients suffering from schizophrenia during the study period. Of these, 1094 (10.9%) records comprise the index group (patients who had attempted suicide), 380 women and 714 men, mean age for the group 39.6±12.9 years. The comparison group of patients matched for diagnosis (N =1094), consisted of 302 women and 792 men, mean age for this group was 42.9±13.7 years. Four variables significantly differentiated between groups. Patients who had attempted suicide were younger (39.6 vs. 42.9 years; p =0.00), higher percentage of females (34.7% vs. 27.6%; p =0.00), with increased rates of co-morbid physical illness (27.5% vs. 20.4%; p =0.00) notably cardiovascular and diabetes and with a higher rate of alcohol and drug abuse (32.1% vs. 12.4%; p =0.00). Conclusions: The present study emphasizes several significant factors associated with attempted suicide amongst schizophrenia patients notably physical co-morbidity and abuse of alcohol and drugs. These need be integrated into existing risk assessment schemes thus aiding in decreasing adverse outcomes in this vulnerable group of patients. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study examined the relationship between job performance and prosocial behavior at work using several variables that to date have received little or no attention in the literature. It focuses on employees need for control, need for achievement, and the more commonly studied variable of organizational commitment as direct predictors of prosocial behavior and ultimately as indirect antecedents of job performance. Eight hundred and forty-six employees from 41 organizations participated in the study. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) supported a direct relationship between need for achievements and Job performance. However, no relationship was found between need for control and job performance. Moreover, when both personality variables were controlled for, the effect of prosocial behavior and commitment on job performance disappeared. This finding suggests that further work on the mediating effects of prosocial behavior and commitment on Job performance is needed. Abstract: Background: Bipolar disorder (BPD) in the elderly is probably heterogeneous and its etiopathogenesis is complex. The data for the treatment of late-life BPD are limited. Asenapine is approved in the United States for acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder with or without psychotic features. Aim: We report the results of acute treatment with asenapine in elderly patients with BPD. Method: Elderly patients (N=11), mean age: 67.7±6.1 years, consecutively admitted to the psychogeriatric ward due to acute bipolar mania were treated by asenapine 10mg/BID monotherapy for 4 weeks. Safety and tolerability assessments included adverse events (AEs), laboratory values, and anthropometric measures. Response, a secondary assessment, was measured as change in Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) total score from baseline to week 4. Results: One patient developed a rash on day 6 of treatment and one patient developed peripheral edema on day 14 of treatment. Both AEs resolved rapidly following discontinuation of asenapine. Only mild sedation was reported by three patients. In all cases, mean (±SD) change (improvement) in YMRS total score at week 4 was −21.4±12.9 and 7/11 (63.6%) of patients remitted (YMRS≤12). Conclusion: In this small open-label study of elderly patients with bipolar mania, acute treatment with asenapine was well tolerated and effective. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Background: Approximately 50% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) do not respond after adequate first-line treatment with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Special interest is paid to whether specialist level inpatient psychiatric care results differ from community studies. Aim: To compare switching alternatives after treatment failure with an SSRI; switching to venlafaxine (Dexcel Pharma Israel) versus switching to another SSRI in depressed inpatients. Method: A retrospective register study of inpatients was undertaken in a psychiatric tertiary care university center serving an urban catchment area in Israel with a population of more than 900,000. Results: A total of 401 MDD inpatients were assigned to antidepressant treatment. Of these, 232 records (47 venlafaxine, 185 SSRI) were included in the analysis. Patients assigned to venlafaxine treatment were older (mean age 64.3±15years versus 53.6±17; p<0.01) and had more comorbid physical disorders (80% versus 57%; p<0.001). In the primary analysis, there was no statistical difference between groups in reduction in CGI-S total scores. The secondary end point of achieving a CGI-S score of 2 or less (1 = normal, not at all ill or 2 = borderline mentally ill) was statistically significantly better for the venlafaxine treated inpatients (P=0.02). AEs were reported less than 10% of patients in both groups. Conclusion: Patients who remain severely depressed following treatment with an SSRI may gain benefit from the dual-action drug venlafaxine, rather than switching to another SSRI. Objective: The role of environmental factors in hospitalization of patients with schizophrenia is incompletely understood. This study attempts to relate the pattern of hospital admissions to environmental variables such as season and to social factors such as nationally celebrated holidays.Methods: Charts of all adults (n = 4,331) with a discharge diagnosis of schizophrenia admitted to the Abarbanel Mental Health Centre (Bat Yam, Israel) between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2005 were reviewed. Hospitalizations were classified by gender, first or repeat admission, month and season of admission, and whether or not the admission coincided with a major Jewish holiday period.Results: There was a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in first admissions for men during April, the month corresponding to Passover, the most widely celebrated holiday in Israel. This pattern was not seen for women or for repeat admissions. There was no significant effect of the season upon admission rates, using two different methods of defining the season.Conclusions: This study demonstrated significant monthly variability in admission rates and a possible protective effect of a widely celebrated public religious holiday. A consistent effect of season upon rates of admission was not found. Future studies need to identify which specific social factors exert a protective or harmful effect and study how knowledge of these effects can be translated into clinical practice. Aim: Migrants have increased risk for psychiatric hospitalizations. Over the last decades Israel has become a destination for migration of migrant workers and asylum-seekers. Methods: The current retrospective study retrieved socio-demographic, clinical and migration-related chart data for 117 migrants admitted to a major Israeli psychiatric hospital between 2005–2011, to delineate characteristics and risk-factors for psychiatric hospitalizations. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to predict re-hospitalization. Results: Of the study sample, 61% were single men, 20% had been exposed to trauma, 15% had prior psychiatric hospitalizations and 24% had attempted suicide. Approximately, 76% were involuntarily hospitalized and diagnosed with psychosis. None were diagnosed with PTSD. Approximately, 20% were re-hospitalized. Factors significantly associated with re-hospitalization were male gender (OR = 15.2, 95%, CI 1.8–126.9, p = 0.012), prior psychiatric hospitalization (OR = 15.4, 95% CI 2.1–111.9, p < 0.01), being single (OR = 5.96, 95% CI1.14–31.07, p = 0.03) and traumatic exposure (OR = 4.75, 95% CI: 1.17–19.36, p= 0.03). Shorter duration in Israel, unemployment, asylum-seekers, no temporary-visa and use of restraints were more prevalent among those re-hospitalized. Conclusion: Identification of migrants at risk and trauma-informed, culturally relevant services can reduce hospitalizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How do universities encourage academics to buy into a shared vision while often setting punitive targets in teaching and research? This article explores possible antecedents of a university’s shared vision and its relationships with academics’ research and teaching performance in the era of managerialism. This cross-country study of two large universities in the UK and Vietnam draws on data from multiple sources to uncover the key components of a university’s shared vision. A survey strategy was adopted. Data were collected from different sources, using a stratified random sampling technique from academics of different schools at those universities. A total of 431 survey responses from academics at these universities were included for analysis, employing structure equation modelling. It provides fresh insights into whether having a shared vision can benefit academics’ research and teaching performance. The findings of this study show that while achieving a high degree of shared vision may enhance research performance, it may do little to improve teaching performance. The study provides empirical evidence indicating that a shared vision emerges as strongly rooted within individual employees rather than managers, challenging the common belief that a shared vision emanates primarily from the top down. This article advances social exchange theory (SET) by showing the interdependence of workplace antecedents, personal attributes, interpersonal connections, and performance. It introduces a framework for the relationship between universities’ shared vision with its possible antecedents and with academics’ teaching performance and research performance. Background: Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD).Objective: To measure efficacy and safety of medical cannabis oil (MCO) containing THC as an add-on to pharmacotherapy, in relieving behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).Methods: Eleven AD patients were recruited to an open label, 4 weeks, prospective trial.Results: Ten patients completed the trial. Significant reduction in CGI severity score (6.5 to 5.7; p <  0.01) and NPI score were recorded (44.4 to 12.8; p <  0.01). NPI domains of significant decrease were: Delusions, agitation/aggression, irritability, apathy, sleep and caregiver distress.Conclusion: Adding MCO to AD patients' pharmacotherapy is safe and a promising treatment option. Objective: Suicidal ideation and behavior currently have no quick-acting pharmacological treatments that are suitable for independent outpatient use. Suicidality is linked to mental pain, which is modulated by the separation distress system through endogenous opioids. The authors tested the efficacy and safety of very low dosages of sublingual buprenorphine as a time-limited treatment for severe suicidal ideation.Method: This was a multisite randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of ultra-low-dose sublingual buprenorphine as an adjunctive treatment. Severely suicidal patients without substance abuse were randomly assigned to receive either buprenorphine or placebo (in a 2:1 ratio), in addition to their ongoing individual treatments. The primary outcome measure was change in suicidal ideation, as assessed by the Beck Suicide Ideation Scale at the end of each of 4 weeks of treatment.Results: Patients who received ultra-low-dose buprenorphine (initial dosage, 0.1 mg once or twice daily; mean final dosage=0.44 mg/day; N=40) had a greater reduction in Beck Suicide Ideation Scale scores than patients who received placebo (N=22), both after 2 weeks (mean difference -4.3, 95% CI=-8.5, -0.2) and after 4 weeks (mean difference=-7.1, 95% CI=-12.0, -2.3). Concurrent use of antidepressants and a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder did not affect the response to buprenorphine. No withdrawal symptoms were reported after treatment discontinuation at the end of the trial.Conclusions: The time-limited, short-term use of very low dosages of sublingual buprenorphine was associated with decreased suicidal ideation in severely suicidal patients without substance abuse. Objectives The rate of completed suicide among the elderly continues to be the highest of any age group worldwide. The aim of the present study was to investigate the sociodemographic data, mental and physical health characteristics, and suicide methods of the elderly population who completed suicide in Israel. Methods A national retrospective record-based case series study of consecutive elder (50 years or older) suicide completers who had undergone autopsy over a 10-year period was conducted. Results Three hundred and fourteen consecutive records of suicide completers, 69.6% males, and mean age 64.7 were analyzed. The largest group (38%) emigrated from the Former Soviet Union and 19% emigrated from East Europe. Immigrants from East Europe committed suicide at an older age. Hanging was the predominant suicide method. Jumping from height increased more than threefold in the 'old-old'(older than 75 years) group. Hanging and firearms were more frequently used by males. Females were more likely to employ poisoning and suffocation. A significant minority (30%) had been diagnosed as suffering from psychiatric morbidity. Most common diagnoses were depression and alcohol abuse or dependence. Physical disorders (mainly cardiovascular disease and malignancy) were present in 27% of cases. Subjects with psychiatric illness were more likely to complete suicide at a younger age compared with subjects with physical illness. Conclusions Findings of male predominance, psychiatric morbidity, and physical illness are consistent with previously published studies.
