Abstract

Ocular diseases such as cataract, refractive error, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy significantly impact vision and quality of life worldwide. Despite advances in conventional treatments, challenges like limited bioavailability, poor patient compliance, and invasive administration methods hinder their effectiveness. Nanomedicine offers a promising solution by enhancing drug delivery to targeted ocular tissues, enabling sustained release, and improving therapeutic outcomes. This review explores the journey of nanomedicine from bench to bedside, focusing on key nanotechnology platforms, preclinical models, and case studies of successful clinical translation. It addresses critical challenges, including pharmacokinetics, regulatory hurdles, and manufacturing scalability, which must be overcome for successful market entry. Additionally, this review highlights safety considerations, current marketed and FDA-approved nanomedicine products, and emerging trends such as gene therapy and personalized approaches. By providing a comprehensive overview of the current landscape and future directions, this article aims to guide researchers, clinicians, and industry stakeholders in advancing the clinical application of nanomedicine in ophthalmology. Abstract

Infectious ocular diseases like keratitis, conjunctivitis, and endophthalmitis pose significant clinical challenges due to the complexities of delivering drugs to the eye. Recent advancements in drug delivery systems offer promising improvements for treating these conditions. Key strategies include targeted delivery through physicochemical modifications, magnetic nanoparticles, and ligand-receptor interactions. This review explores the safety and biocompatibility of ocular drug delivery systems through in vivo ocular toxicity studies, in vitro cytotoxicity assays, hemocompatibility studies, ocular tolerance tests, and genotoxicity assays. It also examines combination therapies and stimuli-responsive delivery systems for their potential to enhance therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, we discuss tailored and optimized drug delivery approaches for infectious ocular diseases, outlining current challenges and future directions for developing effective ocular drug delivery systems. 7. Integrated bio-inspired Design by AI: Using cell structure patterns to train an AI model to explore topology design ideas

Abstract

In building design, the structural design is usually incorporated in the latter stages of the design, and the computational tools currently available focus more on converging and optimizing a single solution rather than providing an opportunity for the designer to explore design ideas. Incorporating structural design in the initial design phases can lead to more efficient and cost-effective structures, but in order to do so practical tools should be available to the designer to deepen the design space and allow them to efficiently explore it. Generative AI models could provide a solution to the problem and expand the design space by learning from the data provided. This thesis explores such a solution by means of training an AI model (Variational Autoencoder) on an artificial dataset of 2D lattice patterns. To do that, a dataset of 6 unique 2D lattice patterns is created and used to train a simple VAE model. The methodology used in this thesis is to validate if an AI can aid in the exploration of design ideas by providing a larger design space with newly generated data that contain learned features from the dataset rather than through constraints set by the designers. The results show that the VAE model can learn features and provide a greater diversity of design than the original dataset through newly generated designs. The output of the VAE model in this thesis is then explored for possible integrations into the design process for the early stages of design. Abstract

Parasitic plants obtain their nutrition from their hosts. In addition to this direct damage, they cause indirect damage to their hosts by transmitting various plant pathogens. There are some 4,500 species of parasitic plants known; out of them, nearly 60% are root parasites and the rest of them parasitise on the shoot parts. Orobanchaceae and Convolvulaceae are the two mostly studied families of parasitic plants; and the parasitic plants are the chief mode for transmission of the phytoplasmas. The parasitic plants have various modes of obtaining nutrition; however, the information about the mechanism(s) involved in the pathogen transmission by the parasitic plants is limited. The latest biotechnolgical advances, such as metagenomics and high througput sequencing, carry immense promise in understanding the host-parasitic plant-pathogen association in deeper details; and initiatives have indeed been taken. Nevertheless, compared to the other pests hindering crop productivity, parasitic plants have not yet been able to gain the needed attention of the plant scientists. In this chapter, we review and present some of the latest advances in the area of these important plant pests.
