Abstract

Feynman-Hibbs (FH) effective potentials constitute an appealing approach for investigations of many-body systems at thermal equilibrium since they allow us to easily include quantum corrections within standard classical simulations. In this work we apply the FH formulation to the study of Ne$_N$-coronene clusters ($N=$ 1-4, 14) in the 2-14 K temperature range. Quadratic (FH2) and quartic (FH4) contributions to the effective potentials are built upon Ne-Ne and Ne-coronene analytical potentials. In particular, a new corrected expression for the FH4 effective potential is reported. FH2 and FH4 cluster energies and structures -obtained from energy optimization through a basin-hoping algorithm as well as classical Monte Carlo simulations- are reported and compared with reference path integral Monte Carlo calculations. For temperatures $T> 4$ K, both FH2 and FH4 potentials are able to correct the purely classical calculations in a consistent way. However, the FH approach fails at lower temperatures, especially the quartic correction. It is thus crucial to assess the range of applicability of this formulation and, in particular, to apply the FH4 potentials with great caution. A simple model of $N$ isotropic harmonic oscillators allows us to propose a means of estimating the cut-off temperature for the validity of the method, which is found to increase with the number of atoms adsorbed on the coronene molecule.

Abstract

This article explores the use of deep learning, specifically artificial neural networks, to optimize the parameters of laser shock peening in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Laser shock peening is a technique that introduces compressive residual stresses to improve the fatigue properties of materials. The authors develop a neural network model that accurately predicts residual stresses and depth of the modified layer. The model can be used to identify optimal processing parameters for achieving maximum depth and compressive stresses. Abstract

The propagation of light radiation in the atmosphere is a topic that needs to be properly analysed to mitigate its negative influence on astronomical observations. This work describes a novel approach for evaluating atmospheric propagation of artificial light at night (ALAN), emphasizing the dependence on altitude and aerosols. It is based on an innovative experiment using a sounding balloon equipped with two sky-quality meters (SQM): one vertically pointed at 30° (SQM-V) and the other horizontally at 90° (SQM-H) from the zenith. The system was launched during astronomical night conditions from an area of the Italian Apennines with low ground light emission and crossed the Tuscan sky, observing the vertical and horizontal ALAN propagation. The data analysis of the two SQMs and their georeferentiation through altitude and trajectory reconstruction allows us to model the propagation of light in the experimental field of view from a few hundred metres up to an altitude of about 30 km. In this work, the main focus is given to the tropospheric part of the atmosphere up to 12 500 m: the processed data are used to validate a theoretical model taking into account the altitude, course of the balloon, atmospheric composition, and population of the cities overflown by the balloon, obtaining a correlation of 0.85 with SQM-H and 0.91 with SQM-V. The magnitude values of close to 21.5 $\mathrm{mag\, arcsec}^{-2}$ measured by SQM-V at 2000 m are an important experimental result for evaluating the influence of aerosols and altitude on ALAN propagation.

Abstract

This article explores the use of laser shock peening (LSP) to enhance the fatigue life of turbine blades in the aerospace industry. LSP involves applying high-energy laser pulses to a metal surface, creating compressive residual stress in the subsurface layer. The article presents numerical simulation models that examine the effects of LSP on turbine blades, including the propagation of elastic-plastic waves and the formation of residual stress. The study also investigates the impact of peening parameters such as laser intensity and spot size on the distribution of residual stress. Experimental tests and finite element simulations were conducted on TC4 titanium alloy samples, similar in structure to turbine blades, confirming the effectiveness of LSP in inducing compressive residual stresses. Abstract

Aim: The diagnosis, severity and extent of a sterile inflammation or a septic infection could be challenging since there is not one single test able to achieve an accurate diagnosis. The clinical use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging in the assessment of inflammation and infection is increasing worldwide. The purpose of this paper is to achieve an Italian consensus document on [18F]FDG PET/CT or PET/MRI in inflammatory and infectious diseases, such as osteomyelitis (OM), prosthetic joint infections (PJI), infective endocarditis (IE), prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE), cardiac implantable electronic device infections (CIEDI), systemic and cardiac sarcoidosis (SS/CS), diabetic foot (DF), fungal infections (FI), tuberculosis (TBC), fever and inflammation of unknown origin (FUO/IUO), pediatric infections (PI), inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), spine infections (SI), vascular graft infections (VGI), large vessel vasculitis (LVV), retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF) and COVID-19 infections. Methods: In September 2020, the inflammatory and infectious diseases focus group (IIFG) of the Italian Association of Nuclear Medicine (AIMN) proposed to realize a procedural paper about the clinical applications of [18F]FDG PET/CT or PET/MRI in inflammatory and infectious diseases. The project was carried out thanks to the collaboration of 13 Italian nuclear medicine centers, with a consolidate experience in this field. With the endorsement of AIMN, IIFG contacted each center, and the pediatric diseases focus group (PDFC). IIFG provided for each team involved, a draft with essential information regarding the execution of [18F]FDG PET/CT or PET/MRI scan (i.e., indications, patient preparation, standard or specific acquisition modalities, interpretation criteria, reporting methods, pitfalls and artifacts), by limiting the literature research to the last 20 years. Abstract

Purpose: To assess the presence and pattern of incidental interstitial lung alterations suspicious of COVID-19 on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) ([18F]FDG PET/CT) in asymptomatic oncological patients during the period of active COVID-19 in a country with high prevalence of the virus. Methods: This is a multi-center retrospective observational study involving 59 Italian centers. We retrospectively reviewed the prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected during the COVID period (between March 16 and 27, 2020) and compared to a pre-COVID period (January–February 2020) and a control time (in 2019). The diagnosis of interstitial pneumonia was done considering lung alterations of CT of PET. Results: Overall, [18F]FDG PET/CT was performed on 4008 patients in the COVID period, 19,267 in the pre-COVID period, and 5513 in the control period. The rate of interstitial pneumonia suspicious for COVID-19 was significantly higher during the COVID period (7.1%) compared with that found in the pre-COVID (5.35%) and control periods (5.15%) (p < 0.001). Instead, no significant difference among pre-COVID and control periods was present. The prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected at PET/CT was directly associated with geographic virus diffusion, with the higher rate in Northern Italy. Among 284 interstitial pneumonia detected during COVID period, 169 (59%) were FDG-avid (average SUVmax of 4.1). Conclusions: A significant increase of interstitial pneumonia incidentally detected with [18F]FDG PET/CT has been demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A majority of interstitial pneumonia were FDG-avid. Our results underlined the importance of paying attention to incidental CT findings of pneumonia detected at PET/CT, and these reports might help to recognize early COVID-19 cases guiding the subsequent management.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the hypocholesterolemic effects of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) phenols and the mechanisms behind the effect. Two phenolic extracts were prepared from EVOO of different cultivars and analyzed using the International Olive Council (IOC) official method for total phenols, a recently validated hydrolytic procedure for total hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, and 1H-NMR analysis in order to assess their secoiridoid profiles. Both of the extracts inhibited in vitro the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl co-enzyme A reductase (HMGCoAR) activity in a dose-dependent manner. After the treatment of human hepatic HepG2 cells (25 &micro, g/mL), they increased the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor protein levels through the activation of the sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBP)-2 transcription factor, leading to a better ability of HepG2 cells to uptake extracellular LDL molecules with a final hypocholesterolemic effect. Moreover, both of the extracts regulated the intracellular HMGCoAR activity through the increase of its phosphorylation by the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-pathways. Unlike pravastatin, they did not produce any unfavorable effect on proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) protein level. Finally, the fact that extracts with different secoiridoid profiles induce practically the same biological effects suggests that the hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol derivatives may have similar roles in hypocholesterolemic activity.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the presence and pattern of incidental interstitial lung alterations suspicious of COVID-19 on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) ([18F]FDG PET/CT) in asymptomatic oncological patients during the period of active COVID-19 in a country with high prevalence of the virus. Methods: This is a multi-center retrospective observational study involving 59 Italian centers. We retrospectively reviewed the prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected during the COVID period (between March 16 and 27, 2020) and compared to a pre-COVID period (January–February 2020) and a control time (in 2019). The diagnosis of interstitial pneumonia was done considering lung alterations of CT of PET. Results: Overall, [18F]FDG PET/CT was performed on 4008 patients in the COVID period, 19,267 in the pre-COVID period, and 5513 in the control period. The rate of interstitial pneumonia suspicious for COVID-19 was significantly higher during the COVID period (7.1%) compared with that found in the pre-COVID (5.35%) and control periods (5.15%) (p < 0.001). Instead, no significant difference among pre-COVID and control periods was present. The prevalence of interstitial pneumonia detected at PET/CT was directly associated with geographic virus diffusion, with the higher rate in Northern Italy. Among 284 interstitial pneumonia detected during COVID period, 169 (59%) were FDG-avid (average SUVmax of 4.1). Conclusions: A significant increase of interstitial pneumonia incidentally detected with [18F]FDG PET/CT has been demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A majority of interstitial pneumonia were FDG-avid. Our results underlined the importance of paying attention to incidental CT findings of pneumonia detected at PET/CT, and these reports might help to recognize early COVID-19 cases guiding the subsequent management.

Abstract

The development of erratic distribution of cervical metastases from oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) bypassing the typical metastatic pattern can possibly challenge the role of the classic neck dissection. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of lymphoscintigraphy (LS) and radio-guided neck dissection as a simple and widely accessible method with a favorable cost/benefit ratio, able to improve the OSCC staging and possibly to tailor the surgical approach to cervical lymph node dissection.From June 2015 to December 2018, 16 patients (5 women, 11 men, median age 59.5±12.5 years) with cN0 (10) and cN+ (6) OSCC were enrolled. The day before surgery all patients underwent LS with acquisition of planar and SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography)/CT images, after a peritumoral injection of 99mTc-Nanocoll® (median 74±1.2 MBq). Patients underwent tumor excision and a radioguided neck dissection, using a portable gamma camera. The sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) were isolated and separately analyzed in 200-micron sections and pancytokeratin immunohistochemistry assessment, looking for micrometastases.A homolateral lymphatic spread on LS was observed in all cases, whereas in 5 cases (31.3%) lymphatic drainage was contralateral to the OSCC site. In one cN0 patient, a skip micrometastasis has been identified in a SLN.The results of the present study may suggest a role of LS and radioguided neck dissection in detecting the real lymphatic spread of OSCC, in order to improve the oncological assessment and to tailor the neck dissection.
