This paper presents the results of a study of a sludge subjected to the (ATAD) process - Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion occurring in a two-stage installation operated in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Olecko, Poland. The study of the sludge and the analysis of obtained results were conducted over 2011 and 2014. The subject of the study was a thickened sludge in an intermediate tank from which it was next transferred to facility reactors. The stabilization of processed sludge was evaluated analyzing the change in the dry mass (DS) content in the sludge. Measurements were carried out in thickened sludge samples and after the ATAD process. Collected results were then subjected to a statistical analysis and it was determined to which extent as resulted from the subject process the dry mass and the dry organic mass (VS) content was changing in the sludge. Also, it was analyzed how the oxygen chemical demand (COD) was changing. The dry mass content in the thickened sludge was from 60 g/1 to 160 g/1. After the process, this amount was from 35 to 76 g/1. Similarly, the organic mass content in a dry sludge mass changed from initial values within a range of 44-135 g/1 to 23-60 g/1 after the ATAD process. Also, the organic substance content expressed as COD decreased from 80 to 467 g O2/I in a thickened sludge to 51-261 g O2/I in the sludge after the process. Water supply pumping stations are among the main energy-consuming elements in the water supply system. The energy optimization of a pumping station can significantly affect the energy consumption of a water utility. This article deals with the energy optimization of water pumping stations. The work assumes several variants of optimization of water supply pumping stations through changes in the water supply system, pressure changes in the pumping station, and modification of the number of pumps. After analyzing the network, conducting field tests, and creating a model of the water supply network, the network was calibrated in order to reproduce the existing water network as accurately as possible. Then, a variant analysis was performed, and the best optimization method for the pumping station was selected. In two variants, there was a decrease in electricity consumption; in three there, was an increase; in one, there was no change. By connecting the DMA zones and modifying the pressure in the pumping station, the energy consumption of the pumping stations was reduced. On this basis, it was found that it is possible to optimize the water pumping station by modifying the pumping station and work related to the network layout. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to determine the effect of the low-temperature conditioning of excess dairy sewage sludge using solidified carbon dioxide on the efficiency of methane fermentation. An increase in the solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge volumetric ratio above 0.3 had no significant effect on chemical oxygen demand concentration in the dissolved phase. The highest chemical oxygen demand values, ranging from 490.6 ± 12.9 to 510.5 ± 28.5 mg·dm−3, were determined at solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge ratio ranging from 0.3 to 0.5. The low-temperature conditioning caused ammonia nitrogen concentration to increase from 155.2 ± 10.2 to 185.9 ± 11.1 mg·dm−3 and orthophosphates concentration to increase from 198.5 ± 23.1 to 300.6 ± 35.9 mg·dm−3 in the dissolved phase. The highest unitary amount of biogas, reaching 630.2 ± 45.5 cm3·g o.d.m.−1, was produced in the variant with the solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge volumetric ratio of 0.3. Methane content of the biogas produced was at 68.7 ± 1.5%. Increased solidified carbon dioxide dose did not lead to any significant changes in biogas and methane production. The efficiency of biogas production from unconditioned excess dairy sewage sludge was lower by 43.0 ± 3.2%. This manuscript analyzed the process of autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) used in installations of municipal sewage treatment plants in Poland. Additionally, solutions for sludge management and the parameters of operating installations were presented. Attention was also put to the energy consumption of the process, where the energy consumption for 1 m3 of sludge treated was between 18.4 and 27.79 kWh. The amount of sewage flowing into the analyzed plants was between 1500 and 14,000 m3/d. On the basis of research carried out in the years 2003–2019 in the selected plants, the characteristics of sludge after the ATAD process were presented. The parameters that determine the usefulness of the sludge as an organic fertilizer were indicated above all. The content of total nitrogen, which was from 2.4 to 8.1% of dry matter, ammonium nitrogen, which was from 0.8 to 1.8% of dry matter, and total phosphorus, which was from 1.1 to 4.2% of dry matter, recommended using sludge for fertilization. It was also pointed out that sewage sludge should be regularly tested for the dynamics of changes in chemical composition and biological parameters. Landfill leachates from municipal landfills are usually heavily contaminated and thus require treatments before direct discharge into natural waters. Selecting the appropriate technology for leachate treatment is still a major challenge for operations in municipal landfills. Biodegradation is effective for treating young leachates, whereas old leachates require processes such as chemical oxidation, coagulation–flocculation, chemical precipitation, ozonation, activated carbon adsorption, and reverse osmosis. Recently, the combination of biological pretreatments followed by physico-chemical processes has been shown to be very efficient. Here we review the efficiency of biological treatment in combination with reverse osmosis to clean landfill leachates. We studied in particular processes including a membrane bioreactor, activated sludge, a rotating biological contactor, and up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket treatments, followed by reverse osmosis. We found a 99–99.5% removal of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), and a 99–99.8% removal of N–NH4+ using reverse osmosis and activated sludge. Using reverse osmosis with a rotating biological contactor, we observed 99% removal of COD, biochemical oxygen demand and N–NH4+. The combination of reverse osmosis, activated sludge and rotating biological contactor removed 98–99.2% of Cl− and 99–99.7% of Pb. Total suspended solids are best removed, up to 99%, by either a combination of reverse osmosis with membrane bioreactor, or reverse osmosis with activated sludge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
