We have developed a ring-cavity resonator that can be used to measure the absolute frequencies of optical transitions with an uncertainty below 40 kHz. The length of the resonator is calibrated against a reference laser locked to the D2 line of 87Rb, the frequency of which is known with 6 kHz accuracy. We demonstrate the power of this technique by measuring the absolute frequencies of various hyperfine transitions in the D1 line of 133Cs. Our results agree with earlier measurements using the frequency-comb technique, and have similar accuracy. Measurement of the D1-line frequency could lead to a more precise determination of the fine-structure constant. We also report a precise value of A=291.918(8) MHz for the hyperfine constant in the 6P1/2 state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There have been no case reports on aluminum phosphide- induced pancreatitis in the literature available. In this report, we present the case of a young man who developed acute pancreatitis and probably acute myocarditis following ingestion of aluminum phosphide pellets in the absence of the usual risk factors and after exclusion of other possible causes of pancreatitis. In the absence of re-challenge, we put forth the probable causative association of pancreatitis with aluminum phosphide or phosphine gas, its active pesticidal component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the face of the formidable environmental challenges precipitated by the ongoing climate change, Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) are gaining widespread acknowledgement for their potential as biofertilizers, biocontrol agents, and microbial inoculants. However, a knowledge gap pertains to the ability of PGPB to improve stress tolerance in forestry species via cross-inoculation. To address this gap, the current investigation centres on PGPBs, namely, Acinetobacter johnsonii, Cronobacter muytjensii, and Priestia endophytica, selected from the phyllosphere of robust and healthy plants thriving in the face of stress-inducing conditions. These strains were selected based on their demonstrated adaptability to saline, arid, and nitrogen-deficient environments. The utilization of PGPB treatment resulted in an improvement of stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) in poplar plants exposed to both salt and drought stress. It also induced an increase in essential biochemical components such as proline (PRO), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). These reactions were accompanied by a decrease in leaf malonaldehyde (MDA) content and electrolyte leakage (EL). Furthermore, the PGPB treatment demonstrated a notable enhancement in nutrient absorption, particularly nitrogen and carbon, achieved through the solubilization of nutrients. The estimation of canopy temperature via thermal imaging proved to be an efficient method for distinguishing stress reactions in poplar than conventional temperature recording techniques. Superhydrophobic surfaces, characterized by exceptional water repellency and self-cleaning properties, have gained significant attention for their diverse applications across industries. This review paper comprehensively explores the theoretical foundations, various fabrication methods, applications, and associated challenges of superhydrophobic surfaces. The theoretical section investigates the underlying principles, focusing on models such as Young's equation, Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter states, and the dynamics of wetting. Various fabrication methods are explored, ranging from microstructuring and nanostructuring techniques to advanced material coatings, shedding light on the evolution of surface engineering. The extensive applications of superhydrophobic surfaces, spanning from self-cleaning technologies to oil-water separation, are systematically discussed, emphasizing their potential contributions to diverse fields such as healthcare, energy, and environmental protection. Despite their promising attributes, superhydrophobic surfaces also face significant challenges, including durability and scalability issues, environmental concerns, and limitations in achieving multifunctionality, which are discussed in this paper. By providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of superhydrophobic research, this review aims to guide future investigations and inspire innovations in the development and utilization of these fascinating surfaces.

Dangers confronting forest ecosystems are many and the strength of these biological systems is deteriorating, thus substantially affecting tree physiology, phenology, and growth. The establishment of genetically engineered trees into degraded woodlands, which would be adaptive to changing climate, could help in subsiding ecological threats and bring new prospects. This should not be resisted due to the apprehension of transgene dispersal in forests. Consequently, it is important to have a deep insight into the genetic structure and phenotypic limits of the reproductive capability of tree stands/population(s) to endure tolerance and survival. Importantly, for a better understanding of genes and their functional mechanisms, gene editing (GeEd) technology is an excellent molecular tool to unravel adaptation progressions. Therefore, GeEd could be harnessed for resolving the allelic interactions for the creation of gene diversity, and transgene dispersal may be alleviated among the population or species in different bioclimatic zones around the globe. This review highlights the potential of the CRISPR/Cas tools in genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic-based assorted and programmable alterations of genes in trees that might be able to fix the trait-specific gene function. Also, we have discussed the application of diverse forms of GeEd to genetically improve several traits, such as wood density, phytochemical constituents, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and photosynthetic efficiency in trees. We believe that the technology encourages fundamental research in the forestry sector besides addressing key aspects, which might fasten tree breeding and germplasm improvement programs worldwide.

Melampsora medusae f. sp. deltoidae is causing serious foliar rust disease on Populus deltoides clones in India. In the present study, a novel fungal hyperparasite on M. medusae has been reported. The hyperparasitic fungus was isolated from the uredeniospores of the rust fungi and identified as Cladosporium oxysporum by morphological characterization and DNA barcode technique based on the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region of nrDNA and beta-tubulin (TUB) gene region. Hyperparasitism was further confirmed through leaf assay and cavity slide methods. Leaf assay method showed no adverse effect of C. oxysporum on poplar leaves. However, the mean germination percentage of urediniospores was significantly decreased ( p  < 0.05) in the cavity slide method when a conidial suspension (1.5 × 10 7 conidia per ml) of C. oxysporum was applied in different deposition sequences. Scanning and light microscopic observations were made to explore the mode of action of the hyperparasitism. The antagonistic fungus vividly showed three different types of antagonism mechanisms, including enzymatic, direct, and contact parasitism. Alternatively, by screening 25 high-yielding clones of P. deltoides , five clones (FRI-FS-83, FRI-FS-92, FRI-FS-140, FRI-AM-111, and D-121) were enlisted under highly resistant category. Present study revealed an antagonistic relationship between C. oxysporum and M. medusae , which could be an effective method of biocontrol in field plantations of poplar. Photocatalytic degradation of dye contaminants using nanocomposite adsorbents has emerged as a promising solution for wastewater treatment. Owing to its abundant availability, eco-friendly composition, biocompatibility, and strong adsorption activity, spent tea leaf (STL) powder has been extensively explored as a viable dye-adsorbent material. In this work, we report spectacular enhancement in the dye-degradation properties of STL powder on incorporation of ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS). The STL/ZIS composite was synthesized using a novel, benign, and scalable aqueous chemical solution method. Comparative degradation and reaction kinetics studies were performed onto an anionic dye, Congo red (CR), and two cationic dyes, Methylene blue (MB) and Crystal violet (CV). The degradation efficiencies of CR, MB, and CV dyes were obtained to be 77.18, 91.29, and 85.36%, respectively, using the STL/ZIS (30%) composite sample after the 120 min experiment. The spectacular improvement in the degradation efficiency of the composite was attributed to its slower charge transfer resistance (as concluded by the EIS study) and optimized surface charge (as concluded by ζ potential study). Scavenger tests and reusability tests deciphered the active species ( • O 2 - ) and reusability of the composite samples, respectively. Bamboo is an important genetic resource in India, supporting rural livelihood and industries. Unfortunately, most Indian bamboo taxa are devoid of basic genomic or marker information required to comprehend the genetic processes for further conservation and management. In this study, we perform genome survey sequencing for development of de novo genomic SSRs in Dendrocalamus longispathus, a socioeconomically important bamboo species of northeast India. Using Illumina platform, 69.49 million raw reads were generated and assembled into 1,145,321 contig with GC content 43% and N50 1228 bp. In total, 46,984 microsatellite repeats were mined-out wherein di-nucleotide repeats were most abundant (54.71%) followed by mono- (31.91%) and tri-repeats (9.85%). Overall, AT-rich repeats were predominant in the genome, but GC-rich motifs were more frequent in tri-repeats. Afterwards, 21,596 SSR loci were successfully tagged with the primer pairs, and a subset of 50 were validated through polymerase chain reaction amplification. Of these, 36 SSR loci were successfully amplified, and 16 demonstrated polymorphism. Using 13 polymorphic SSRs, a moderate level of gene diversity (He = 0.480; Ar = 3.52) was recorded in the analysed populations of D. longispathus. Despite the high gene flow (Nm = 4.928) and low genetic differentiation (F ST  = 0.119), severe inbreeding (F IS  = 0.407) was detected. Further, genetic clustering and STRUCTURE analysis revealed that the entire genetic variability is captured under two major gene pools. Background: Water pollution is one of the important causes of human fatality in the world, particularly in underdeveloped or developing countries. Moreover, with rapid industrialization and urbanization, the problem of water pollution is posing a severe threat to health and livelihood. The pollutants found in water are of varied nature and depend on the source of the water. Several techniques have so far been adopted to purify contaminated water. All the techniques have one or the other disadvantages, limiting their applications on large scale, sustainability, and long-term usage. The advances in the field of nanoscience and technology have opened a new horizon for replacement/improvement of conventional ways with more efficient methods. Presently, green synthesized nanomaterials are being used for water purification., Methods: Plant extracts and microbes are being used to synthesize nanomaterials, which are used as catalysts, adsorbents and membranes for water purification., Results: Nanomaterial-based techniques could create problems for the environment due to various chemicals used in their production step, thus defeating the ultimate purpose. Unplanned urbanization and heavy automobile use by the rapidly growing population contribute to a variety of environmental issues. Roadside plants can mitigate air pollution by modifying their enzymatic activity, physiological and anatomical traits. Plant enzymes, physiological and anatomical traits play an important role in adaptation and mitigation mechanisms against vehicular emissions. There is a significant gap in understanding of how plant enzymes and anatomical traits respond or how they participate in modulating the effect of vehicular emissions/air pollution. Modulation of leaf anatomical traits is also useful in regulating plant physiological behavior. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vehicular pollution on the enzymatic activity, physiological, and anatomical traits of plant species that grow in forests (S1) and alongside roads (S2-1 km away from the S1 site) during different seasons. The present study examines four commonly found roadside tree species i.e. Grevillea robusta, Cassia fistula, Quercus leucotrichophora and Cornus oblonga. The study found that the activities of catalase and phenylalanine ammonium enzymes were higher in G. robusta species of roadside than control site (S1). Non-enzymatic antioxidants such as flavonoid and phenol were also found in higher concentrations in roadside tree species during the summer season. However, the measured values of physiological traits were higher in Q. leucotrichophora tree species of S1 during the summer season. When compared to the other species along the roadside, Q. leucotrichophora had the highest number of stomata and epidermal cells during the summer season. We design and develop a high-performance magnetic shielding system for a long baseline fountain-type atom interferometer. The shielding system is achieved by a combination of passive shielding using permalloy and active compensation with coils. An 11.4 m-long three-layer cylindrical shield is completed by the process of welding, local annealing, and entire annealing. The active compensations compress the residual magnetic field to 8.0 nT max-to-min and the corresponding gradient below 30 nT/m over 10 m along the axial direction in which external compensation, internal compensation, and constant magnetic field (C-field) compensation reduce the inhomogeneities to 25.0, 12.6, and 1.7 nT (standard deviation) sequentially. We estimate that this system could reduce the systematic error of the quadratic Zeeman shift to the 10 -13 level for the weak equivalence principle test with a simultaneous 85 Rb- 87 Rb dual-species atom interferometer.

We design and implement a laser system for 85 R b and 87 R b dual-species atom interferometers based on acousto-optic frequency shift and tapered amplifier laser technologies. We use eight-pass acousto-optic modulators to generate repumping lasers for 85 R b and 87 R b atoms. The maximum frequency shift of the laser is 2.8 GHz, and the diffraction efficiency is higher than 20%. We use high-frequency acousto-optic modulators to generate the Raman lasers. This laser system uses only two seed lasers to provide the various frequencies required by 85 R b and 87 R b dual-species atom interferometers, which greatly improves laser usage. The laser system is applied in the equivalence principle test experiment using an 85 R b and 87 R b dual-species atom interferometer. The signal of atoms launched to 12 meters is successfully observed, and the resolution of gravity differential measurement is improved from 8×10 -9 g to 1×10 -10 g .

Populus deltoides is a fast-growing woody species possessing plethora of industrial applications. This species evolutionarily developed unisexual male and female catkin inflorescence on separate trees. Flowering usually occurs during early spring before the development of foliage, where buds appear near axils or at the extending shoots. In 2019, surveys were undertaken to study the flowering pattern of P. deltoides in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in northern India. Interestingly, an anomalous flowering behaviour (appearance of off-season male catkins during autumn, i.e. October) was observed in a plantation trial at Kapurthala, Punjab. The male catkins were 2.7-3.1 ± 0.07 cm long and 0.3-0.5 ± 0.03 cm wide, which is significant for flowering and liberation of pollen grains. Preliminary results suggested that climatic factors, such as episodes of high or low temperature and the precipitation variation forcing the tree species to behave differently. Unearthing the climate-driven off-season flowering in other tree species alluded the stimulation of phytohormones, such as gibberellic and salicylic acid concentrations influencing the flowering time, therefore, needs further investigation in case of P. deltoides. Overall, this work provides early clues of changing climatic scenario altering the flowering pattern of a tropical forestry tree species.

Aluminum (Al) is widely used in all forms of industry, including automobile, aerospace, transmission lines, and exchangers, and in general household appliances. Ice accumulation on Al surfaces may cause serious problems, especially during the winter, leading to critical damage to mechanical systems. In this study, we developed a superhydrophobic coating with anti-icing properties on an Al surface using a simple and cost-effective technique. The superhydrophobic dual-shape micro-/nanostructured (MN-) Al surface was fabricated by a facile chemical etching and an anodization method, followed by surface modification with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via a simple thermal vapor deposition method. The static contact angle of the fabricated surface was more than 160 °C. Compared with the bare surface and the silicone oil-infused PDMS coating (SLIPS) on the MN-structured Al substrate, the fabricated superhydrophobic surface displayed excellent anti-icing. Ice formation on the superhydrophobic surface was delayed by 80 and 45 min at -5 °C and -10 °C, respectively, at a relative humidity of 80% ± 5%. The superhydrophobic surface demonstrated an increase of almost four and two times delay in icing time on the surface over bare and SLIPS surfaces, respectively. The coalescence induced jumping behavior of condensate water droplets was also investigated on the fabricated surfaces. The result indicates that the superhydrophobic surface can effectively delay ice/frost formation by the synergetic effect of surface morphology and the extremely low adhesive property of the surfaces, which allows the self-propelled jumping phenomenon at low temperature and high humidity. This proposed simple, fast, and cost-effective method could be applied to design large-scale anti-icing surfaces.

We present a method to characterize and optimize a tapered-amplifier laser system (TALS) by its spectral quality through a long multi-pass rubidium absorption cell. A thermal vapor cell is used to measure the non-resonant spectrum of TALS, including the broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), which is its main spectral noise. This method gives a simple quantified measurement to optimize various working parameters of a TA, including current and temperature online. It can as well be used to compare various TA chips based on their usage time during our precision measurement experiments. The results of this method are compared and found in sync with traditional methods of Fabry-Perot cavity and beat measurements. Such characterization and optimization are important for noise control in atom interferometers, atomic clocks, and other atomic manipulations. It can very well be used for investigating nonlinearity and ASE inside amplifying chips and can be utilized in other applications of ASE using bioimaging.
