2. de Haas-van Alphen measurement of the antiferromagnet URhIn$_5$

Abstract

We report on the results of a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurement performed on the recently discovered antiferromagnet URhIn$_5$ ($T_N$ = 98 K), a 5\textit{f}-analogue of the well studied heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_5$. The Fermi surface is found to consist of four surfaces: a roughly spherical pocket $\beta$, with $F_\beta \simeq 0.3$ kT; a pillow-shaped closed surface, $\alpha$, with $F_\alpha \simeq 1.1$ kT; and two higher frequencies $\gamma_1$ with $F_{\gamma_1} \simeq 3.2$ kT and $\gamma_2$ with $F_{\gamma_2} \simeq 3.5$ kT that are seen only near the \textit{c}-axis, and that may arise on cylindrical Fermi surfaces. The measured cyclotron masses range from 1.9 $m_e$ to 4.3 $m_e$. A simple LDA+SO calculation performed for the paramagnetic ground state shows a very different Fermi surface topology, demonstrating a need for more advanced electronic structure calculations.

3. Single crystal study of layered U$_{n}$RhIn$_{3n+2}$ materials: case of the novel U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ compound

Abstract

We report on the single crystal properties of the novel U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ compound studied in the context of parent URhIn$_{5}$ and UIn$_{3}$ systems. The compounds were prepared by In self-flux method. U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ adopts the Ho$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$-type structure with lattice parameters a $= 4.6056(6)$ \AA\ and c $= 11.9911(15)$ \AA. The behavior of U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ strongly resembles that of the related URhIn$_{5}$ and UIn$_{3}$ with respect to magnetization, specific heat and resistivity except for magnetocrystalline anisotropy developing with lowering dimensionality in the series UIn$_{3}$ vs. U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ and URhIn$_{5}$. U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ orders antiferromagnetically below T$_{\textrm{N}}$ $= 117$ K and exhibits a slightly enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma = 47$ mJ$\cdot$mol$^{-1}\cdot$K$^{-2}$. Magnetic field leaves the value of N\'{e}el temperature for both URhIn$_{5}$ and U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ unaffected up to 9 T. On the other hand, T$_{\textrm{N}}$ is increasing with applying hydrostatic pressure up to 3.2 GPa. The weak temperature dependence of $\chi(T)$ in all studied compounds might be attributed to the mainly itinerant nature of 5f electrons. The character of uranium 5f electron states of U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ was studied by first principles calculations based on the density functional theory. The overall phase diagram of U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ is discussed in the context of magnetism in the related URhX$_{5}$ and UX$_{3}$ (X = In, Ga) compounds.

4. Anisotropic magnetic properties of URhIn$_{5}$ compound

Abstract

We report on synthesis and anisotropic physical properties of URhIn$_{5}$. High quality single crystals were grown in In-flux. The compound undergoes a second order phase transition into an antiferromagnetic state at T$_{\textrm{N}}$ = 98 K. The transition is field independent up to 9 T. An increase of the resistivity $\rho$ with j along the [100], [110] and [001] tetragonal axis indicates a spin-density-wave induced order with the gap opening first along the [001] direction. The magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ = M/H exhibits a strong anisotropy. Above T $=$ 200 K, $\chi$(T) follows Curie-Weiss law with the effective moment of $\mu_{\textrm{eff}}$ = 3.71 $\mu_{\textrm{B}}/$U and the Weiss temperatures of $\theta_{\textrm{P}}^{[100]} = -900$ K and $\theta_{\textrm{P}}^{[001]} = -500$ K for H $\parallel$ [100] and H $\parallel$ [001] respectively. The characteristic Kondo-like temperature for URhIn$_{5}$ yields T$_{\textrm{K}} =$ 125 K.

Abstract

Fostering tax morale and reducing tax evasion is particularly challenging for the fragile democracies of Eastern Europe and post-Soviet Eurasia. This study investigates enforced and voluntary tax compliance motivations in Hungary, where democratic decline and a taxation policy shift towards deterrence measures occurred simultaneously. We compare the tax compliance motivations of citizens before and after a series of corruption scandals related to the tax authority. Our findings demonstrate that these scandals undermined trust in the tax authority and voluntary tax compliance. Abstract

This paper intends to understand the major institutional factors related to the economic development of the European Union (EU) countries in the last two decades. It provides some contributions to the institutionalist debate of the present crisis of the European Union, and within it, the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The two main issues of the empirical research are the effect of the different institutions on economic growth and the relative importance of institutions compared with the traditional macroeconomic components of economic development. The institutionalist tradition of comparative political science and political economy as well as institutional economics define the framework of interpretation. The analysis sheds some light on the relationship between economic development and the different institutional dimensions, namely the legal environment, political institutions, public policy institutions (governance) and the informal institutions, the cultural components of the economic-political behaviour. The empirical research examines the development pattern of the European Union countries between 1993 and 2011 as well as the relationship between economic development and institutional quality in that period by descriptive and explanatory statistical methods. The results reveal strong relationship among the different aspects of institutional quality in the EU countries; within Europe we cannot observe a Singaporean type contradictory constellation between the quality of democratic institutions and public policy effectiveness. The path of European development has been drawing a conspicuously strong correlation among the different institutional dimensions: the high quality of democratic institutions, the respect of the rule of law and property rights and the effective governance are going hand in hand with the growth-supporting components of the culture. In cultural terms, the high level of trust, respect and self-determination as well as the lack of obedience ensure the most successful long-term growth pattern in Europe. Another important finding is that the EMU countries are conspicuously heterogeneous in their institutional quality and the Mediterranean members of the Euro area are institutionally closer to the non-EMU-member Central-Eastern European countries than the core EMU countries. Concerning the economic policy consequences, the heterogeneity of the informal institutions fundamentally challenges the effectiveness of the approach of stronger harmonisation by stricter formal rules and stricter sanctions against the norm-breaking Euro area members.

16. When populist leaders govern: conceptualising populism in policy making

Abstract

The rise of populist governance throughout the world offers a novel opportunity to study the way in which populist leadersand parties rule. This article conceptualises populist policy making by theoretically addressing the substantive and discur-sive components of populist policies and the decision-making processes of populist governments. It first reconstructs theimplicit ideal type of policy making in liberal democracies based on the mainstream governance and policy making schol-arship. Then, taking stock of the recent populism literature, the article elaborates an ideal type of populist policy makingalong the dimensions of content, procedures and discourses. As an empirical illustration we apply a qualitative congruenceanalysis to assess the conformity of a genuine case of populist governance, social policy in post-2010 Hungary with the populist policy making ideal type. Concerning the policy content, the article argues that policy heterodoxy, strong willingnessto adopt paradigmatic reforms and an excessive responsiveness to majoritarian preferences are distinguishing features ofany type of populist policies. Regarding the procedural features populist leaders tend to downplay the role of technocraticexpertise, sideline veto-players and implement fast and unpredictable policy changes. Discursively, populist leaders tendto extensively use crisis frames and discursive governance instruments in a Manichean language and a saliently emotionalmanner that reinforces polarisation in policy positions. Finally, the article suggests that policy making patterns in Hungariansocial policy between 2010 and 2018 have been largely congruent with the ideal type of populist policy making.

21. Long-Term Care and Gender Equality: Fuzzy-Set Ideal Types of Care Regimes in Europe

Abstract

Recent changes in the organization of long-term care have had controversial effects on gender inequality in Europe. In response to the challenges of ageing populations, almost all countries have adopted reform measures to secure the increasing resource needs for care, to ensure care services by different providers, to regulate the quality of services, and overall to recalibrate the work-life balance for men and women. These reforms are embedded in different family ideals of intergenerational ties and dependencies, divisions of responsibilities between state, market, family, and community actors, and backed by wider societal support to families to care for their elderly and disabled members. This article disentangles the different components of the notion of ‘(de)familialization’ which has become a crucial concept of care scholarship. We use a fuzzy-set ideal type analysis to investigate care policies and work-family reconciliation policies shaping long-term care regimes. We are making steps to reveal aggregate gender equality impacts of intermingling policy dynamics and also to relate the analysis to migrant care work effects. The results are explained in a four-pronged ideal type scheme to which European countries belong. While only Nordic and some West European continental countries are close to the double earner, supported carer ideal type, positive outliers prove that transformative gender relations in care can be construed not only in the richest and most generous welfare countries in Europe.

In this thesis we address a broad spectrum of ground state investigations on CePd2X3 (X=Zn, Ga) and (Ce,U)nTIn3n+2 (T=Rh, Ir) compounds. Single crystals of CePd2Zn3 and CePd2Ga3 compounds were synthesized for the first time using Bridgman method. CePd2Ga3 revealed a ferromagnetic transition with TC = 6.7 K with a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. CePd2Zn3 orders antiferromagnetically below TN = 1.9 K. Results of magnetization measurements on Ce2IrIn8 revealed effective magnetic moment µeff = 2.45µB/Ce3+ and a paramagnetic Curie temperature θP = −31 K. Decomposition of Hall resistivity ρxy(B) into NHE and AHE revealed a predom- inance of AHE in the temperature range from 60 K up to 100 K. Abstract

We have studied the interplay between the layered crystal structure and the 5f magnetism in uranium-based tetragonal compounds UnTIn3n+2. Sin- gle crystals of U2RhIn8, URhIn5 and UIn3 were prepared by In self-flux method. The novel U2RhIn8 compound adopts the Ho2CoGa8-type struc- ture with lattice parameters a = 4.6056(6) ˚A and c = 11.9911(15) ˚A. The behavior of U2RhIn8 strongly resembles that of related URhIn5 and UIn3 with respect to magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity except for magnetocrystalline anisotropy developing on stacking composition in the series UIn3 vs. U2RhIn8 and URhIn5. U2RhIn8 orders antiferromagnetically below TN = 117 K and exhibits slightly enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 47 mJ·mol−1 ·K−2 . TN increases with increasing c/a ratio in contrast to the behavior of their CenTIn3n+2 counterparts. Magnetic field leaves the value of the Néel temperature of URhIn5 and U2RhIn8 unaffected up to 9 T. On the other hand, TN increases with applied hydrostatic pressure up to 3.2 GPa with the ∂TN/∂p coefficient resembling URhIn5 and UIn3. Ther- mal expansion of U2RhIn8 reveals a hysteretic behavior of the antiferromag- netic transition pointing to its 1st -order character. Abstract

Explaining policy change has been one of the major concerns of educational policy studies. Guided by the multiple streams framework (MSF), this article aims to explain the specific dynamics of cost-elimination policies at the high school level in Ghana. Through the thematic analysis of interviews, documents, and other resources, we argue that an exceptional confluence of problems, policies, and politics has shaped the Ghanaian educational policy process and generated policy change. Our findings demonstrate the pivotal role of partisan electoral politics, helping explain why political parties, governments, and policymakers shifted towards the adoption of fee-free educational policies. Although the problem stream contributed to the opening of the policy window during agenda-setting and the problem and the policy streams played a non-negligible role in policy adoption, the political stream dominated both stages. Abstract

We have studied two different systems; RE2CoIn8 (RE = Pr, Nd, Dy) and CenTIn3n+2 (T = Pd, Pt; n = 2, 3). All compounds were prepared for the first time in the single crystalline form using the self-flux method. X-ray diffraction confirmed the tetragonal Ho2CoGa8 structure type for the RE2CoIn8 compounds and for the new phase Ce2TIn8. The novel phase Ce3PtIn11 adopts the structure of the Ce3PdIn11 compound, which represents a new structure type. Magnetic measurements revealed low anisotropy and the c-axis as the easy axis for all RE2CoIn8 compounds. Pr2CoIn8 is a paramagnet, while Nd2CoIn8 and Dy2CoIn8 order antiferromagnetically. Magnetization and specific heat measurements of Dy2CoIn8 revealed complex magnetic field-temperature phase diagram with various types of magnetic ordering. Specific heat measurements on multiphase Ce-Pd-In system revealed superconducting transition at Tc = 0.69 K arising from Ce2PdIn8 and another magnetic transition from Ce3PdIn11 at ~ 1.7 K. Ce3PdIn11 and Ce3PtIn11 compounds reveal two, probably magnetic transitions at T1 = 1.6 K, T2 = 1.45 K and T1 = 2.1 K and T2 = 2.0 K, respectively. Specific heat data qualifies both materials as heavy fermion compounds with γ = 290 mJ.mol-1 Ce K-2 and γ = 300 mJ.mol-1 Ce K-2 respectively.

Abstract

Penal populism, advocating severe punishment of criminals, has greatly influenced justice policy measures in Eastern Europe over the last decade. This article takes Hungary as a typical case in the region and based on a recent criminal policy reform it investigates the roots of the penal populist discourse, which legitimizes and supports punitive measures. The research assumes that policy discourses need specific social actors that construct and promote them. Accordingly, the article explores whether the right-wing political parties and the tabloid media have taken a leading role in constructing the discourse of penal populism as a response to public concerns about crime. Content analysis and frame analysis of political communication and media was conducted to identify the discursive positions of major political parties and selected national media sources. The research found that penal populism was dominant in Hungarian political discourse while most of the media, including the tabloid press, have been rather reluctant to adopt punitive tones. The results thus contradict previous findings and offer a more nuanced view on how penal populism is being constructed and promoted in Eastern Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Standard game theory relies on the assumption that players are rational decision makers that try to maximize their payoffs. Experiments with human players show that real people rarely follow the predictions of normative theory. Our aim is to model the human behavior accurately. Several classes of equilibria (Nash, Pareto, Nash-Pareto and fuzzy Nash-Pareto) are considered by using appropriate generative relations. Three versions of the centipede game are used to illustrate the different types of equilibrium. Based on a study of how people play the centipede game, an equilibrium configuration that models the human behavior is detected. This configuration is a joint equilibrium obtained as a fuzzy combination of Nash and Pareto equilibria. Abstract

Important properties of a crude oil, such as viscosity, are determined by the crude oil's chemical constituents. In particular, viscosity is highly dependent on the asphaltene content. Various processes that act on reservoir crude oils can alter chemical composition, such as aspahltene content, and therefore impact important crude oil properties. In many basins, such as the Llanos basin in Colombia, processes such as biodegradation, water washing, and multiple charging can contribute to asphaltene and viscosity variations. The considerable complexity of the problem requires a multidisciplinary workflow to understand the main factors that influence the quality of reservoir crude oils and their gradients. Here, we perform comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and with mass spectrometry on samples of known provenance, combined with petroleum system modeling, to develop an understanding of the primary factors controlling asphaltene content and viscosity in a reservoir. The crude oils in our study show the impact of biodegradation, water washing, and multiple charging. Some variation of composition is observed laterally in the subsurface formation. These observations help constrain the petroleum system model; the timing of paleo-pasteurization appears to be key in establishing the quality of the oils.
