Abstract

Grass weeds affect arable crops throughout the world, inflicting yield penalties, reducing crop quality and taking available nutrients away from the growing crop. Recently in Ireland, the presence of herbicide resistance in grass weeds has been noted. In order to preserve the sustainability of crop production in Ireland, an integrated pest management approach must be implemented. How this applies to control grass weeds was the focus of this review. Here we examined the state of current research into grass weed biology and the nature of herbicide resistance, identifying gaps in research in the Irish context. We identified a number of cultural grass weed control techniques, as being relevant to the Irish mode of crop production. Crop rotation, cultivation techniques, manipulation of sowing dates and increased crop competition were recognised as useful strategies. Combining these strategies to provide effective grass weed control may be key to reduce dependence on herbicides.

Abstract

Extending nanostructures into the third dimension has become a major research avenue in modern magnetism, superconductivity and spintronics, because of geometry-, curvature- and topology-induced phenomena. Here, we introduce Co-Fe nanovolcanoes-nanodisks overlaid by nanorings-as purpose-engineered 3D architectures for nanomagnonics, fabricated by focused electron beam induced deposition. We use both perpendicular spin-wave resonance measurements and micromagnetic simulations to demonstrate that the rings encircling the volcano craters harbor the highest-frequency eigenmodes, while the lower-frequency eigenmodes are concentrated within the volcano crater, due to the non-uniformity of the internal magnetic field. By varying the crater diameter, we demonstrate the deliberate tuning of higher-frequency eigenmodes without affecting the lowest-frequency mode. Thereby, the extension of 2D nanodisks into the third dimension allows one to engineer their lowest eigenfrequency by using 3D nanovolcanoes with 30% smaller footprints. Abstract

Additive nanotechnology enable curvilinear and three-dimensional (3D) magnetic architectures with tunable topology and functionalities surpassing their planar counterparts. Here, we experimentally reveal that 3D soft magnetic wireframe structures resemble compact manifolds and accommodate magnetic textures of high order vorticity determined by the Euler characteristic, $\chi$. We demonstrate that self-standing magnetic tetrapods (homeomorphic to a sphere; $\chi=+2$) support six surface topological solitons, namely four vortices and two antivortices, with a total vorticity of +2 equal to its Euler characteristic. Alternatively, wireframe structures with one loop (homeomorphic to a torus; $\chi = 0$) possess equal number of vortices and antivortices, which is relevant for spin-wave splitters and 3D magnonics. Subsequent introduction of $N$ holes into the wireframe geometry (homeomorphic to an $N$-torus; $\chi < 0$) enables the accommodation of a virtually unlimited number of antivortices, which suggests their usefulness for non-conventional (e.g. reservoir) computation. Furthermore, complex stray-field topologies around these objects are of interest for superconducting electronics, particle trapping and biomedical applications.

Abstract

Recently, focused electron beam induced deposition has been employed to prepare functional magnetic nanostructures with potential in nanomagnetic logic and sensing applications by using homonuclear precursor gases like Fe(CO)5 or Co2(CO)8. Here we show that an extension towards the fabrication of bi-metallic compounds is possible by using a single-source heteronuclear precursor gas. We have grown CoFe alloy magnetic nanostructures from the HFeCo3(CO)12 metal carbonyl precursor. The compositional analysis indicate that the samples contain about 80 at% of metal and 10 at% of carbon and oxygen. Four-probe magnetotransport measurements are carried out on nanowires of various sizes down to a width of 50 nm, for which the room temperature resistivity of 43~$\mu\Omega$cm is found. Micro-Hall magnetometry reveals that 50~nm$\times$250~nm nanobars of the material are ferromagnetic up to the highest measured temperature of 250 K. Finally, the TEM microstructural investigation shows that the deposits consist of a bcc Co-Fe phase mixed with a FeCo2O4 spinel oxide phase with nanograins of about 5 nm diameter.

Abstract

Gyro finishing is capable of reducing the surface roughness and inducing residual compressive stresses into the edge zone of the component to enhance the fatigue strength. Due to an insufficient understanding of gyro finishing processes, it is not possible to adjust the process result in a knowledge-based manner. In order to understand the mechanisms of action in the process, knowledge of the contact between abrasive media and workpiece is necessary. This paper presents the analysis of the contact conditions and the process state variables between abrasive media and workpiece with two measuring systems. Furthermore, the influence of the contact conditions and the process state variables on the material removal mass was investigated. Therefore, analogy workpieces were machined by gyro finishing using different process state variables and abrasive media specifications. Based on the results, an empirical-analytical model is derived, which is able to describe the material removal mass depending on the contact conditions and the process state variables between abrasive media and workpiece.

Abstract

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Abstract

Magnonics is a rapidly developing domain of nanomagnetism, with application potential in information processing systems. Realisation of this potential and miniaturisation of magnonic circuits requires their extension into the third dimension. However, so far magnonic conduits are largely limited to thin films and 2D structures. Here, we introduce 3D magnonic nanoconduits fabricated by the direct write technique of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID). We use Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy to demonstrate significant qualitative differences in spatially resolved spin-wave resonances of 2D and 3D nanostructures, which originates from the geometrically induced nonuniformity of the internal field. This work demonstrates the capability of FEBID as an additive manufacturing technique to produce magnetic 3D nanoarchitectures and presents the first report of BLS spectroscopy characterisation of FEBID conduits.

Abstract

Transverse field μ+ SR-measurements on a single crystal sample of U2Zn17 reveal a strikingly non uniform magnetic behavior. While part (∼30%) of the U-5f moments remain paramagnetic below TN = 9.7 K (at least for external fields ≥0.2 T) another part (∼20%) enters into a complex order below 9.7 K which is associated with huge internal field spreads at the μ+ sites. Above TN this part causes an anisotropic μ+ Knight shift involving direction cosines up to 8th order. Only. the remaining fraction is compatible with the simple AF order suggested by neutron diffraction studies. © 1992.
